CHILE HARVEST 2023GUIDE TO NM CHILE

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.... for New Mexicans that is. It’s time to experience the heat of New Mexico’s Green Chile Harvest Season! From August to October, the Land of Enchantment comes alive with the vibrant colors and irresistible aroma of freshly roasted green chile. Whether you’re a foodie seeking a unique gastronomic experience or simply curious to explore the rich cultural heritage of this region, this guide will be your ultimate companion. Discover the secrets of green chile, learn about the harvest process, and delve into the diverse culinary traditions that make New Mexico a true haven for spice enthusiasts.

History and harvest season in New Mexico

New Mexico’s love affair with green chile runs deep. The green chile pepper has been a staple in New Mexican cuisine for centuries, dating back to the time of the Native Americans. The Spanish settlers introduced the chile pepper to the region in the 16th century, and since then, it has become an integral part of the state’s culinary identity.

What sets New Mexico’s green chile apart is its unique flavor profile. The chiles grown in the state have a distinct sweetness and a mild to medium heat that is unlike any other variety. This flavor is a result of the region’s ideal climate and soil conditions, which contribute to the chile’s exceptional taste.

The green chile harvest season in New Mexico typically begins in August and lasts until October. This is the time when the chiles are at their peak ripeness and are ready to be picked. The harvest season brings a flurry of activity to the region, with farmers and volunteers working tirelessly to gather the chiles from the fields.

One of the most important aspects of the harvest season is the process of roasting green chile. Roasting not only enhances the flavor but also helps in removing the tough outer skin, making them easier to peel. The aroma of roasting chile fills the air during this time, creating a sensory experience that is totally unique to New Mexico.

It becomes a family affair. We get our green chile, get it roasted at a local farm or grocery store, then peel and pack into freezer bags to make it last throughout the year. But always leave enough out to make a green chile quesadilla with garlic salt.

Popular green chile festivals and events in New Mexico

New Mexico takes its green chile seriously, and what better way to celebrate this culinary marvel than through festivals and events dedicated to the green chile harvest season? From the Hatch Chile Festival in Hatch, known as the “Chile Capital of the World,” to the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta, there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in all things green chile.

The Hatch Chile Festival, held annually in early September, is a must-visit for any green chile enthusiast. This two-day event features live music, food vendors, and of course, plenty of freshly roasted green chile. Visitors can sample a variety of dishes made with green chile, including green chile cheeseburgers, green chile stew, and even green chile ice cream.

Where to find the best green chile in New Mexico

If you’re looking to experience the best of New Mexico’s green chile, you’re in luck. The state is home to numerous restaurants, markets, and farms that offer a wide selection of green chile products. One of the most famous places to get your green chile fix is the town of Hatch, which is renowned for its flavorful and aromatic chile.

For a truly authentic experience, head to one of the many local farmers’ markets in the state. Here in Roswell, you can find fresh green chiles straight from the fields of the Graves Farm. Many markets also offer roasted chiles, allowing you to take home the flavors of New Mexico.

Recipes and health benefits for using green chile

Green chile is incredibly versatile, and there are count less ways to incorporate it into your culinary creations. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a novice in the kitch en, experimenting with green chile can add a burst of flavor to any dish.

One classic New Mexican dish that highlights the fla vors of green chile is green chile stew. Made with tender chunks of pork, potatoes, and of course, roasted green chile, this hearty stew is a staple in the region. The secret to a delicious green chile stew lies in the quality of the chile used, so be sure to source the freshest ones you can find. Visit our website to get full recipes of green chile dishes.

In addition to its incredible taste, green chile also offers a range of health benefits. The capsaicin, the compound responsible for the chile’s heat, has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help in reduc ing pain and inflammation. Green chile is also a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as minerals like po tassium and iron.

It’s worth noting that while green chile can be beneficial for your health, it’s important to consume it in modera tion, especially if you’re not accustomed to spicy foods. Gradually increase your tolerance.

The Green Chile Harvest Season in New Mexico is a time of celebration, bringing together food lovers from near and far to experience the unique flavors and rich cultural heritage. There are endless opportunities to indulge in the flavors of the Land of Enchantment - the Green Chile Harvest Season awaits!

LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN

Small Town Living

Imagine a place where time seems to slow down, where neighbors greet each other with a friendly smile, and where the simple pleasures of life are cherished. Welcome to the charm of small-town living, where the hustle and bustle of city life fades away, giving way to a peaceful and close-knit community. There are many attractions that lie just a stone’s throw away from these idyllic towns. From quaint coffee shops serving up freshly brewed delights to picturesque parks perfect for picnics, there is no shortage of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Advantages of living in a small town

We’ve all heard it before, “there’s nothing to do here.” While the shopping and meet-up places stay the same, there is still plenty to do. Living in a small town offers a multitude of advantages that are often overlooked in favor of the glitz and glamor of big cities. One of the primary advantages is the strong sense of community that prevails in small towns. In a close-knit community, neighbors become friends, and everyone looks out for one another. From Friday Night Lights to our yearly kick off parade for Eastern NM State fair, there’s something personal about it all. This sense of belonging fosters a feeling of security and support that is hard to find in larger urban areas. Roswell and surrounding areas like Artesia, Carlsbad, and Ruidoso offer a slower pace of life, allowing residents to escape the constant rush and stress of city living. With less traffic and shorter commute times, individuals can enjoy a better work-life balance and spend more time with loved ones.

Small towns may be quaint and charming, but they are far from boring when it comes to attractions. From vibrant main streets lined with boutique shops to cozy cafes- Kith and Kin in Artesia, we see you, small towns have a unique

appeal that draws both locals and visitors alike. One of the main attractions in small towns is the opportunity to connect with local artisans and craftsmen. Whether it’s browsing through handmade jewelry at a local art gallery or watching a local artist finish their work, there is a certain magic in witnessing the creative process up close. From old-fashioned movie theaters to vintage buildings revived into something new, these establishments transport visitors back in time, allowing them to experience a simpler and more carefree era. Furthermore, small towns often host festivals and events that celebrate their unique culture and heritage. Roswells Pinata Fest will certainly display this, coming up in September! Whether it’s a traditional music festival or a farmers’ market showcasing local produce, these events provide a glimpse into the heart and soul of the community.

Exploring local parks and outdoor activities

One of the greatest joys of small-town living is the abundance of natural beauty that surrounds these communities. From sprawling parks to scenic hiking trails, small towns offer a wealth of outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts. Local parks are often the heart of the community, providing a space for families to gather, children to play, and individuals to relax and unwind. In addition to parks, small towns are often located near breathtaking natural wonders such as lakes, rivers, and mountains. Ruidoso is only an hour and half away to be in this kind of beauty. These natural landscapes offer a variety of outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, and hiking. Exploring the great outdoors not only provides physical exercise but also rejuvenates the mind and soul. The tranquility and serenity of nature offer a much-needed respite from the noise and chaos of everyday life.

Supporting local businesses and community events

In small towns, supporting local businesses is not just a choice, but a way of life. These businesses are the backbone of the community, providing goods, services, and employment opportunities. By choosing to shop at local stores and dine at independent restaurants, individuals contribute to the local economy and help create a thriving community. Local businesses often offer a level of personalized service and attention to detail that is hard to find elsewhere. From the friendly smiles of the staff to the carefully curated selection of products, these businesses prioritize customer satisfaction and go above and beyond to make each experience memorable. Community events are another way small towns bring people together and foster a sense of unity. Whether it’s a holiday parade, a charity run, or a local fair, these events provide a platform for residents to come together, celebrate, and support one another. Attending community events not only strengthens the community spirit but also creates lasting memories and connections.

Engaging in volunteer opportunities and community service

Small towns thrive on the spirit of volunteerism and community service. Residents understand the importance of giving back and actively participate in various volunteer opportunities and community projects. Whether it’s organizing a charity fundraiser or lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need, these acts of kindness and generos ity strengthen the fabric of the community. Engaging in volunteer opportunities not only benefits those in need but also provides individuals with a sense of fulfillment and purpose. By working together towards a common goal, residents forge deep connections and create a sense of unity that is hard to find elsewhere. In summary, small towns offer a wealth of volunteer opportunities and com munity service projects that allow individuals to make a positive impact and create a tight-knit community. Lets face it, we don’t have the big city lights and glam, but our small-town living offers a charm and allure that’s hard to resist. So, embrace the charm of small-town living, leave behind the chaos of the city, and discover the enchant ment that lies just a stone’s throw away.

Sampling local cuisine and experiencing small-town hospitality

When it comes to food, small towns have their own culinary delights that are not to be missed. From traditional family-owned diners to trendy farm-to-table restaurants, these establishments offer a taste of the local flavors and the hospitality that small towns are known for. Local cuisine often celebrates the region’s agricultural heritage, with dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Whether it’s a hearty bowl of homemade soup or a delectable pie made from scratch, each bite is a testament to the care and passion that goes into creating these culinary masterpieces. In addition to the food, small-town hospitality is another highlight of dining in these establishments. Restaurant owners and staff often go the extra mile to make diners feel welcome, ensuring that each experience is not just a meal but a memorable event. The warm smiles, friendly conversations, and personalized service create an atmosphere that is hard to replicate in larger cities.

FITNESS & HEALTH

We are excited to announce our new Health and Fitness writer Christian Fulkerson. Christian has been fine tuning his career in sports medicine since his teen years. As a young athlete at Goddard High, he experienced many injuries that lead him to have a passion for correcting those injuries and providing those same techniques to others.

In 2019 he became a certified personal trainer, and more recently, a group fitness instructor (AFAA). This has allowed him to start Christian Fulkerson Fitness LLC in March 2021. His journey to heal his own injuries has allowed him to train people from ages 13 - 84 with over 70 clients. His philosophy is to train clients to avoid injuries while they are on their fitness journey.

“Fixing muscle imbalances takes time and focus. I do not want people to get injured how I did while training. I teach everyone various forms of proper form for exercises based off what they’re trying to accomplish and how their body is built. Along with all the different methods and science of training.”

He offers a wide variety of training options from weight loss, sports (Football,Soccer, Baseball, Track), muscular development, injury prevention, post physical therapy, endurance, strength, speed, agility, quickness, flexibility. All while continuing his education as a nutrition coach and body building/physique coach.

We’re looking forward to bring our readers his knowledge every month and provide his content on a wide range level for sports medicine.
