From The Publisher

On to fall and hopefully cooler weather. 10 degrees warmer than Abq seems like 20 degrees hotter. Seems a bit unreal entering October with 90 degree weather. Back on subject, the magazine is trucking forward thanks to all of our readers and advertisers. In this issue we are moving forward with keeping fit with a routine, covering the longest standing leadership program in New Mexico known as Leadership Roswell. P.S. I was personally accepted in and had a blast on day one which was at our Roswell History Museum. Special thanks to the city, chamber, and the Leadership Roswell Alumni for making it such a great experience.

We have added our “Destinations” section where we give you first hand experience on places that are just a short drive away, and we are excited to share our visit to The Tinnie Silver Dollar Steak house. Oh, and as promised in our last issue. We interviewed and too this pic of Robert Zamora. He shares his personal experience, photos and his love for our small town Roswell.

We would also like to announce our extended distribution with our very own HUGE red distribution magazine racks! You will be seeing them around town full of our awesome one of a kind local publication of course.

Thank you again and again for your continued support. Keep cozy when God willing it cools down and read our magazine at one of our listed hot spots aka advertisers/supporters locations. Keep cool, keep warm, and keep posted for our next issue. “That time of the year” is coming up and Can’t wait to talk Christmas!

The United States Postal Service (USPS) recently added a burst of color and festivity to its stamp collection with the introduction of the vibrant and culturally rich Piñata stamps. To mark this special occasion, the USPS held a First Day of Issue Ceremony in collaboration with the Hispano Chamber of Commerce at the renowned Piñatafest.

The Piñata stamps are a delightful addition to USPS’s diverse lineup, celebrating the rich heritage and tradition of piñatas in Hispanic culture. These stamps capture the essence of these colorful and joyful creations that have been an integral part of celebrations for generations.

Extremely proud of the RFD team, Chaves County Sheriff deputies and Roswell Police Officers for their participation in the 9/11 Commemorative Stair Walk. Your commitment to honoring the memory of heroes and commemorating this pivotal day is truly commendable. My son-in-law is also in their academy.

As we race the sun to catch the cover shot for this issue, Robert Zamora, who is 31, chats with us first about his trip to San Diego to skate with Hawk after being selected as “Tony’s Pick” for the 2023 Skatepark Hero award in a nationwide competition intended to raise awareness for The Skateboard Project, a nonprofit organization Hawk founded that provided grants to low-income communities to build quality skate parks.

Robert shared his positive experience while in California sticking to his mission to help our local Roswell, NM community improve our skate park by getting Hawk to sign and share the petition. Zamora’s highlight was that he got to bring and share this exclusive experience with his girlfriend Adele.

We arrived to the infamous “Welcome to Roswell” sign just in time for a few shots. After taking a couple standard shots of him posing and riding his board, the daring and creative skater inside Robert said “Lets do a jump shot.” Not to spoil the effect, he climbs the yellow 3ft cement post which is out of frame of course. Jump 1 was shot, landed and still not it. Jump 2, and, Roswell The Magazine’s latest cover was captured.

As we head back to town, Robert continues to share his experience skating and seeing California with his own eyes. Only visiting in the past as a child, this visit allowed him to see it again in different views. Stopping by Carlsbad beach, in Carlsbad California of course he shared our Carlsbad Caverns and told them all to visit New Mexico.

Tony Hawks Skatepark Hero competition brings together thousands of skaters of various backgrounds, ages, and skill levels to compete for the ultimate prize and raise awareness for The Skatepark Project. Visit https://skateparkhero.org/to learn more.

Q&A

RTM: What was your first impression of Tony Hawk?

Robert: “Star struck but he had a Very good sense of humor. I was blown away by his skateboard collection.”

RTM: How did it feel having skating sessions with Hawk?

Robert: “Skating with Tony was like being in one of his video games in real life, I felt like I could do anything and land my trick. He’s one of the best skaters in the world so it was hard to believe I was skating alongside him.”

RTM: Is there anything he said that really stuck out?

Robert: “Asking for him to help with our new skatepark project and hearing him say he’s down to support it was really heartwarming, Roswell is after all, the last Level in his first Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game!”

RTM: Right on. And finally. What can we do as a community to help improve the skate scene in Roswell America?

Robert: “Having the community support is huge cause it gives the youth and young adults In Roswell a way to have fun and utilize they’re learning skills in a creative and unique manner. It helps not only the community but the rollerbladers, BMX riders and scooter riders as well. I think they can help by coming to the skatepark events or if they wanna help donate to future events we can work that out as well, even if they’re just coming and showing support by being there is awesome.”

Thanks again for your time and readers, please be sure to follow Robert @bobgnarly420, the community skate page we support @ufoskatebash on social media as well as his “Bobs Boards” @bobs_boards_ page to pick up some of his art, and PS we picked up a piece ourselves and can’t wait to sport it! See you next issue.

While Robert is known for skating he also has a creative side where he recycles broken skateboards into wearable jewelry art. This side of him is called Bobs Boards.

MADE SIMPLE

1st time coming into the gym or ever working out.

You want to start working out. Where do you start? There are multiple ways to get started depending on what you’re trying to accomplish. The first thing is getting a habit started with your schedule of training, then followed by a nutrition schedule. I recommend that you schedule your training on your calendar so that no other appointments get in your way as you first start. This way you don’t book your entire day and you reach the end and go I have no time to work out. As far as the best time to work out, I would first say the best time that works for you and your schedule. For some people it’s best to be early in the morning before work, lunch time workouts, afternoon/evening workouts after work. You decide, the best time to work out is the time that gets you in the gym.

Month One Format for never entering the gym:

The format that I have used for my clientele that has worked great is a form of Stabilization Endurance training through National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

OPT Model Phase 1. This will focus on slow tempos through each exercise. You can do this through a circuit (exercises back-to-back to back) fashion of exercises. We go through a basic set pattern and take care of each exercise and then move onto the next.

The tempo we follow is a 1 second concentric (muscle shortening), 2 second isometric (no visuals change in muscle length) hold, 4 second eccentric (muscle lengthening). The main purpose of this is to help teach your neuromuscular system to control weight and learn movement patterns properly. Also helps with muscle/joint/ligament strengthening then compared to going fast through each rep which has a separate focus in the future. The weight that you want to use will be light enough for 15-20 repetitions. It is too light if you do not reach form failure within that rep range. Form failure is where proper form within the movement is no longer possible.

Format for a month plan 1

Glutes: Dumbbell/Barbell Bench Hip Thrust https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ9-6legZ5w/ : 3x15reps: Rest: 60-90sec

These overall examples are great ways to get started in the gym. Through each week you can switch up the body parts with different exercises. That’s why you would number/letter each day of training. We are also not trying to destroy your body right out the gate. If you leave the gym destroyed and you’re new to training, then I would reevaluate what you are doing.

Max Heart Rate Calculation: 220-age= bpm

Cardio Examples:

1. Treadmill Incline Walk 30-60 minutes.

An incline walk on a treadmill for fat loss is one of my favorite easy ways to burn a little fat and calories. We want to be in a Zone 2 cardio level of your age range. This zone will focus on using mostly fats as its primary energy source. To be in Zone 2, that will be around 70% of your maximum heart rate. I would start off at a decent walking pace that is comfortable and then slowly start taking the incline up until you reach the target heart rate. For those that are overweight/obese, pay attention to your low back and knees. If any pain arises in these areas, then take the incline down until it ceases. Unless you need to hold on to the treadmill due to bad balance then holding on will defeat the purpose of the incline.

2. Elliptical

I would use the ellipticals for clients that may have issues with walking for long periods as using the elliptical will remove the impact of stepping. Focus on the same Zone 2 heart rate for 30-60 minutes.

3. Bike

There are various forms of bikes with different positions. If you are an individual who sits for extended periods of time, then I would not use the bike when you are starting off in the gym. Due to the hips being in a flexed position already from sitting all day which can increase further muscular imbalance in the hips and low back.

What

is your core?

lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, along with additional muscles that act on the spine, is often considered the “core of the core.” The LPHC includes the lumbar spine, pelvic girdle, abdomen and hip joints. The muscles of the core are, then, any muscles that cross over or directly act upon the LPHC (NASM 2018).

Core Examples Exercises:

1. Plank or Modified Planks (Knees, Bench, Smith Machine, Wall) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhk 1JkbF2lg&pp=ygUKbmFzbSBwbGFuaw%3D%3D

2. Bird Dog: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ2bzgSAViK/

3. Side Plank: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44ND4bOBT0&pp=ygUPbmFzbSBzaWRlIHBsYW5r

What are corrective exercises?

Corrective exercises are exercises that focus on corrective muscular imbalances and strengthening select muscles groups that may not be isolated in strength training. Corrective Exercises to be done daily:

1. Face Pulls: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e TCBSFlCJ_s&pp=ygUPbmFzbSBmYWNlIHB1bGxz

2. Band External Rotation: https://www.instagram. com/p/CZ20pjkA5tF/

DESTINATION

TINNIE SILVER DOLLAR

The Tinnie Silver Dollar Steakhouse, Tinnie, New Mexico is situated in the picturesque area of southeast New Mexico, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sacramento Mountains. It is about 40 miles southwest of Roswell. Just a short 45-minute drive from town will take you right into the history of the Tinnie Silver Dollar, a steakhouse, venue and two casitas offering nightly stays. Originally built in 1873 as a general store then later, in the 1950’s made into the beauty she is today.

It is hard to pin where to start describing this scenic beauty. We’ll start with the passionate owners, Mike and Brenda Hurst, they have truly brought a farm-to-table experience to the steakhouse. The menu consists of local produce and beef directly from the Hurst Ranch. Without their love for community and farming, we are not sure this place would still be open for enjoyment. Mike and Brenda have ensured that each guest gets a welcome home experience. They consistently offer tours to their dining guests where Mike will go through a thorough history of the Tinnie Silver Dollar. There is a great story behind the name, the architecture, décor, and a couple of good ghost stories! You would enjoy the delicious meal and the great stories behind the tour!

Like many communities in the region, Tinnie’s early economy was closely tied to agriculture, with ranching and farming being important to the area. To honor that, Mike and Brenda host a Branding Party every year to celebrate local ranchers in the surrounding area. Each rancher brings their branding iron to the party and adds it into a wooden post that is later hung in front of the restaurant. The night consists of celebrating community, amazing food, and music. This hidden gem can only be appreciated by experiencing it yourself. It’s the perfect date night location, family get-together experience or a beautiful venue for a wedding or Quinceanera. The grounds are well groomed and just immaculate.

LEADERSHIP ROSWELL

Leadership training in Roswell, New Mexico, has a rich history dating back to 1983. Over the years, this city has been home to numerous leadership programs and initiatives aimed at developing the skills and abilities of individuals to become effective leaders in their respective fields and communities.

In 1983, the Roswell Leadership Institute was established, marking the beginning of organized leadership training efforts in the city. The institute offered a comprehensive leadership development program that brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds, including business, education, government, and nonprofit sectors. Participants engaged in workshops, seminars, and community projects designed to enhance their leadership skills and foster a sense of civic responsibility.

Over the years, the Roswell Leadership Institute evolved and expanded its offerings. It introduced specialized leadership tracks to cater to the unique needs of different industries and sectors. These tracks focused on areas such as healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and public service, ensuring that leaders in various fields received tailored training and support.

In 1995, the Roswell Leadership Conference was inaugurated as an annual event that brought together alumni of the Roswell Leadership Institute, current program participants, and notable guest speakers. This conference served as a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and continued leadership development.

In the 2000s, leadership training programs in Roswell embraced technology, incorporating online courses and virtual leadership seminars to reach a wider audience. This digital transformation allowed aspiring leaders from all over the region to access valuable leadership training without geographical constraints.

The Roswell Leadership Institute also established partnerships with local universities and colleges, offering accredited leadership courses that provided participants with academic recognition for their leadership development efforts.

In recent years, the emphasis on community leadership has grown stronger. Roswell’s leadership programs have increasingly focused on equipping leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to address local challenges, promote economic development, and strengthen the social fabric of the community.

Rick Kraft’s involvement in leadership training in Roswell, New Mexico, has been instrumental in shaping the development of leaders in the community. As a prominent figure in leadership education, Rick Kraft has likely played a key role in various leadership programs and initiatives over the years.

Kraft’s incorporation of faith-based teachings and references to scriptures in his leadership training is a significant aspect of his approach. This approach aligns with a values-based leadership style, emphasizing principles of integrity, ethics, and moral leadership.

By weaving faith-based teachings and scripture references into his leadership training, Rick Kraft not only imparts practical leadership skills but also fosters a deeper sense of purpose, ethics, and responsibility among his students. This approach can resonate strongly with individuals who value their faith and seek to integrate it into their leadership roles.

Leadership programs that emphasize values, ethics, and community engagement, such as those facilitated by individuals like Rick Kraft, play a vital role in nurturing the growth and development of communities like Roswell, America.

Personally attending the Leadership Roswell 2024 class allows me to talk with experience and I am looking forward to writing a follow up article after completeing this course.
