Like many millennials in their 30s facing an existential crisis, I found myself yearning for a change and challenge.
That’s when I embarked on the journey of starting my own business Armed with nothing but a vision, some savings, and a healthy dose of anxiety, I dived in. But instead of letting the overwhelming nature of the task paralyse me, I turned to the most intelligent non-human I know ChatGPT
Read on to discover exactly how I used AI to launch my business, what worked, and what could have been improved.
The first and most crucial step in using ChatGPT or any AI tool is knowing what outcome you want and trying variations to craft and perfect your prompt. My initial prompt was admittedly ambitious, and if I’m being honest, a bit lazy. I simply typed, "I want to start a modest evening wear brand in South Africa Complete a business plan and market research analysis," expecting the groundwork to be handed to me on a silver platter. What I received was a basic outline of a business plan, along with instructions on how to fill it in, but no comprehensive market analysis or financial information
I then requested a detailed market and competitor analysis to assist with my research. While the response was detailed and did include some key competitors, I noticed that a few of the brands mentioned were irrelevant to my target market, while some smaller but significant brands were completely overlooked. It was at this point that I realised the "A" in AI stands for "Artificial" a bot cannot replace your experience However, AI can help refine your insights into a more presentable format, add value to what you already know, and significantly save time.
So, while I did have to roll up my sleeves and get technology to do the groundwork, ChatGPT was instrumental in getting my business off the ground For example, every time I completed a section of my business plan, I would paste it into ChatGPT with the prompt "edit and refine." I also asked if anything was missing and considered the suggestions before incorporating them
Once my business plan was complete, it was time to test its market relevance via a Google Survey. However, AI can help refine your insights into a more presentable format, add value to what I already knew, and significantly save time
My Survey: ChatGPT drastically reduced the time it would have taken to create this survey After a very detailed prompt outlining the objectives and specific information I needed, ChatGPT generated an entire survey for me. The required edits were minimal, and thus, the entire process of creating and distributing the survey was done within an hour The more I used ChatGPT, the more refined the answers became It was as if ChatGPT began to understand exactly what I wanted and my writing style. Over time, the responses even started to sound like something I would say
After two months of detailed research and planning, it was time for execution, which was also made much easier through the use of AI. All of the copy for my website’s "About" page and product descriptions was edited and refined by ChatGPT However, the ultimate game-changer was using ChatGPT for my social media strategy and content calendar.
As my brand strategy and all the details of my business plan were already part of the chat, my prompt was simple, and the results were nearly perfect The prompt was, "Create a social media calendar based on the above pillars for Instagram and TikTok Start from August 9th, where we will tease the 'coming soon' and show some behind-the-scenes content from the photoshoot and the process of building and launching the brand. The brand will launch on September 1st. Create content for September focusing on new products, styling details, as well as craftsmanship and quality Include video, photos, educational content, and stories Include hooks and call-to-action to encourage engagement. Give this in a table format." The response was extremely detailed and closely aligned with my vision and strategy I simply pasted it into a spreadsheet and tweaked it slightly to better reflect the brand’s personality In this way, a task that would have taken a full day or two to complete was done in just a few hours.
Looking back, my experience of building a business with AI has been transformative ChatGPT has proven to be an invaluable tool, not just for saving time, but for refining my ideas and making my vision a reality. However, it’s clear that while AI can streamline and enhance the process, it cannot replace the human element the insight, intuition, and creativity that only you or a mentor can bring to your business It is therefore important to know exactly what you want , why you want it and how you want it and structuring your prompt accordingly.The real power of AI lies in how effectively you can guide it With a clear vision, well-crafted prompts, and thoughtful adjustments, AI becomes a powerful ally in your entrepreneurial journey
If you’re starting or running a business, I highly recommend harnessing the potential of ChatGPT Use it to save time on copywriting, content creation, and editing, so you can focus on what truly matters research, strategy, and the unique human touch that makes your brand stand out.

Once you’ve decided what to eat, the work isn’t over. Heading to the grocery store or placing an online order can be a lot of work do you have any of that specific spice left? Inventory management of the fridge and the pantry is nothing to sneeze at
Smart refrigerators like Samsung’s Family Hub or LG’s ThinQ track food inventory, suggest recipes based on available ingredients and help you create your next grocery list.
On the retailer side, companies like Walmart are using AI to analyze customer data to identify trends, ensure shelves are always stocked with what customers want and create a better shopping experience
AI has already revolutionized our culinary world, changing how we approach meal planning, shopping and cooking and giving us extra time. Personalized recommendations that cater to individual tastes and smart appliances that take the guesswork out of cooking have made the kitchen more efficient, enjoyable and accessible to everyone
However, technology is a tool that serves the consumer. With each consumer being unique, the challenge is to build applications and interfaces that serve each person well.
While millions have been invested in smart kitchen tech, we have yet to see a mass-market implementation of meal planning and grocery shopping that disrupts the space I’m talking like Amazon for e-commerce or Meta for social. That kind of disruption will succeed by focusing on consumer needs while using breakthrough technology.
For those looking to make their mark on the future of food and tech, here are some things to remember:

Aunties, did you know that, for instance, while baking, if you run out of oil you can WhatsApp AI and ask it for substitutes and you will get a reply within seconds, literally. No ads, no pop ups, only straightforward, concrete answers.
Not only will it give you substitutes but it will also give you the pros and cons for using each substitute. You may argue that phoning your Aunty Zohra Bibi in Azaadville will give you the same answers, together with the added bonus or large doses of the latest family drama But on days when she is out collecting her pension or making mango achaar ( because her daughter in laws are too busy playing padel) and can't take your calls, AI is always available
No longer do you have to feel shy or embarrassed to ask questions on your cooking WhatsApp groups if you face hindrances of varying levels of flops when it comes to cooking, AI does not judge and most importantly AI never ignores you AI always replies no matter what time of the day or night it is
AI is kind, it won't cause you unnecessary stress, it won't deliberately leave out ingredients from recipes. AI does not beat around the bush. It gives you what you wants and does not waste your time. Time that you can rather use; to defrost your freezer, wash the curtains or pack away the blankets.
AI is incredibly appreciative and expresses its appreciation so warmly When you thank AI for its assistance, it will reply with a most heartfelt message of gratitude Artificial, some may argue, yet beautiful indeed Aunties, you will never ever feel unappreciated ever again
Yes! AI has become a reality for us a very useful, yet very sad, reality It has erased wholesome and meaningful social interactions
It has reduced memories and bonds of friendship
It has further enslaved us to our devices and reclusive lives
It has obliterated the role and function of the notorious yet impactful Aunty in our communities.

The Roshgold Team spent their 67 minutes on 18 July 2024 with a sense of community spirit and dedication to serving the local settlement and community of Ramaphosa in Vereeniging The organisation chose to support the Roshnee Feeding Scheme (RFS) in lieu of the brilliant work they do on a daily basis to the various communities they serve.
The first stop was at the RFS kitchen in Roshnee where the team enjoyed staff busy preparing the food. The team members participated by dishing out freshly prepared mielie meal and a nutritious and wholesome vegetable curry.
The Roshgold Team marveled at the enormous quantities of food produced and the remarkable efficiency at the RFS kitchen. We were shown how approximately eight thousand five hundred meals go out on a daily basis! It was incredible to see wholesome meals being prepared with such skill and dedication The Roshnee Feeding Scheme team's commitment to their mission is evident in every meal they create.
The Team then moved on to distribution location in the Ramaphosa settlement We got a humbling glimpse into the lives of the recipients. It was clear how much these hot meals are anticipated and relied upon for sustenance. The gratitude and appreciation spoke volumes and reminded our team of the importance of such initiatives

The highlight was our Roshgold Kidz Club Mascot, Zahab bringing smiles and sweet gift packs to the children in the area. Lighthearted moments and laughter were shared as Zahab high-fived and entertained the little ones.

From April to June 2024, I embarked on an extraordinary journey to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Having visited Dubai twice before, this time I set out to explore beyond its glittering skyline and delve into the rich diversity of the other six emirates: Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah This was my first solo trip abroad, and I found the UAE's transport modes metros, buses, taxis, and Abras both safe and efficient, boosting my confidence as a solo traveler.
While traversing between the emirates can be expensive, there are smart ways to manage your budget. Accommodation may be pricey, but there are plenty of affordable options for food, transportation, and activities. In this article, I'll share how I navigated each emirate and the highlights that made this trip unforgettable
Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is renowned for it stunning skyline, cultural landmarks, and luxurious lifestyle The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with its white marble domes and intricate carvings, is a must-visit symbol of the emirate's rich heritage. I spent five days in Al Ain, visiting various masjids and enjoying a day at Hudayriyat Beach, where the sunset was gorgeous I've bookmarked this location for a family return, appreciating the safety and network of South Africans living there
Yas Island, with attractions like Ferrari World and Ya Waterworld, offers family-friendly entertainment The Louvre Museum and the aquarium came highly recommended by locals, though I didn't have time to visit them on this trip. They're on my list for the next visit The UAE always offers more to see and do, ensuring you'll want to come back for more
Sharjah is renowned for its dedication to preserving Arab culture and heritage. Accessible by metro (Al Nahda Station) or taxi, it's about an hour from Dubai The emirate maintains modesty and respect for religion, including a prohibition on alcohol. I found the bustling streets of Sharjah overwhelming but enjoyed the quieter coast A must-visit is the famous Blue Souk, with its vibrant displays of fruits, vegetables, and dates, and the impressive fish market
Sharjah's culinary diversity stood out I enjoyed a flavorful masala dosa and chai for just 10 AED (about R50), compared to a 100 AED (R500) fine dining meal of Tom Yum rice. Managing food and transport expenses can make your trip affordable Explore beyond malls and touristy areas to discover delicious, low-cost food.
During cooler evenings, I observed a pleasant family lifestyle along the beaches Children were active on the promenade, and families set up picnics against Sharjah’s picturesque waterfronts and bustling souks, adding to its traditional charm and making it a unique and enriching destination
Dubai is synonymous with opulence and innovation, home to iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall The man-made Palm Jumeirah and indoor ski resort, Ski Dubai, showcase the city's extraordinary attractions Dubai's vibrant nightlife, luxury hotels, and diverse culinary scene make it a global hotspot
During this trip, my highlights included the desert safari with thrilling dune bashing and stunning sunsets Transitioning from the hot desert to Ski Dubai was fun, especially enjoying rides and hot cocoa. Ski Dubai, located in the Mall of the Emirates, is a treat for those from warmer climates.
A new and underrated visit was the Quranic Park, where a knowledgeable sheikh shared fascinating insights about plants mentioned in the Quran For night swims, JBR Beach with Ain Dubai in the background is stunning The water felt like a warm bath, making it a unique experience
seum of the Future, The Dubai Creek, Ibn Battuta Mall, and tside China Most of these attractions, accessible by metro, shopping to futuristic exhibits
The smallest of the seven emirates, Ajman is renowned for its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere Just an hour's journey from Dubai by taxi or RTA bus, Ajman offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life For me, Ajman was perfect for Abaya shopping, Al Waha mall is one of the best to visit I also enjoyed delicious seafood at local restaurants along the beaches indulging in locally caught shrimp and prawns.
I explored much of Ajman on foot, like a local, armed with an umbrella to shield myself from the heat during the early mornings or late afternoons Exploring on foot not only saved me money compared to using metered taxis but also allowed me to experience the city more intimately I walked past tall buildings and developments along the beach, even passing a labor camp, witnessing scenes often missed by tourists Seeing the workers, dusty and weary from a long day’s work in the sun, returning to their temporary homes made me appreciate my journey and the privilege of being a traveler
This is the only emirate I did not stay in and merely passed by. What I learnt is that Umm Al Quwain offers a slower pace of life, with a focus on nature and outdoor activities The Dreamland Aqua Park and the emirate's pristine mangroves attract families and nature lovers alike Umm Al Quwain's archaeological sites, such as the Ed-Dur ancient city, reveal its historical significance The emirate's unspoiled beaches and islands provide a perfect setting for water sports and camping.

Ras Al Khaimah is known for its diverse landscapes, from sandy beaches to rugged mountains. The turquoise waters offered a perfect retreat after the hustle of other emirates The peaceful streets and soothing atmosphere made for a relaxing stay, with most days spent lounging poolside and beachside.
Breakfast was included with most hotels, and I enjoyed healthy fruits and salads from Spinneys at Al Hamra Mall. Quick meals from Spinneys, Lulu Hypermarket, and Carrefour were convenient and affordable, a great tip for solo travelers in this emirate and beyond. If you are more than one traveler, investing in a subscription on the Entertainer App is also a big saver throughout the UAE on food, accommodation and experiences
Despite ongoing development, Ras Al Khaimah retains its natural charm The emirate’s serene beaches, modern amenities and natural attractions make it a wonderful destination for relaxation and adventure.
The best way in my opinion to travel to Fujairah is via the RTA buses, which run every hour from Union Station in Dubai or Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah. Having used both stations, I found the Sharjah Station to be more user-friendly in its layout and clearly marked areas, with the total journey taking just under two hours at a cost of +- 30dhs (R150)
Fujairah offers stunning views of the Hajar Mountains and has great spots for canoeing, hiking, diving, and snorkeling After a memorable first-time scuba dive, I enjoyed a refreshing watermelon on the yacht and shared diving stories. For a truly memorable experience, I recommend researching and selecting at least three key attractions in each emirate. ingredients
1 low carb warp (brush with olive oil & zaatar or crushed garlic, cut in triangles and place in oven to bake till crisp).
1 small Aubergine cut in cubes
½ tin chickpeas
1 tsp garlic crushed
½ tsp salt
½ tsp cumin
½ tsp chili flakes
½ tsp sumac (optional)
instructions
In a pan heat 1 tablespoon olive oil, add the Aubergine & fry till tender. Then add the chickpeas, garlic & spices. Cook for 3-4 min until aromas are released.
Add 1 tbsp tomato paste and ¼ cup water and bring to a simmer.
Mix 1/3 cup low fat yogurt with lemon juice, pinch of salt, and ½ tsp crushed garlic.
To Assemble:
Lay down the pita chips, top with spicy Aubergine & chickpeas. Drizzle the yogurt. Garnish with pomegranate arils, parsley, 8g sliced/slivered almonds & dukkha (optional).
