CURRICULUM

ThePre-Kcurriculumisachild-drivenandhands-onphilosophythathaschildren learningthroughplaywithacademicsembeddedthroughouttheday.Usingplay, explorationanddiscoveryasawayoflearningenableschildrentodevelopconfidence, creativityandlifelongcriticalthinkingskills.

Teachersintentionallyplaninstruction,centersandinterestareas,smallandlarge groupsanddailyinteractionswitheachchildtocreatepositiverelationshipswitheach student.Themesarechosenbasedonchildren’sinterestsandwhatisrelevanttotheir lives.Teachersbringtheirowncreativityandexpertiseintodailylessonplanningwhile individualizinginstructiontomeettheneedsofallchildren.Transitiontimesbetween activitiesareusedasameansoflearning,notwaiting.

CLOTHING&BACKPACK

ChildrenwillplayandexploreatPre-K.Pleasedressyourchildinclothesthatare comfortableandwashable.Sendafull-sizedbackpacklargeenoughtoholdachangeof clothes,includingsocksandunderwear,incaseofanaccident.Forsafety,we recommendstudentswearclosed-toedshoes(notsandalsorflipflops).

EMERGENCYCONTACTS

Pleasenotifyyourteacherifyouhaveachangeinphonenumberand/orifyouneedto addorchangeinformationonyouremergencycontactform.Itisveryimportantthatwe havecurrentinformationincaseofanemergency.

OUTDOORPLAY

Childrenwillbeplayingoutsideeverydayeveninthewinter.Generally,whenthe temperatureatrecesstimeisbelow0°Fahrenheitorthewindchillis-5°Fahrenheit studentswillremainindoors.Rainorsloppyplaygroundconditionsmayalsorequirean “inside”day.Weaskstudentstowearthefollowingclothingitemsduringthewinter months:warmjacket,snowpants,hat,bootsandgloves/mittens.Ifyouneedsupport withwinterclothingpleasecall651-604-3578forconfidentialassistance.

SCHOOLSUPPLIES

Weaskforaone-time,voluntarydonationofsuppliesatthebeginningofeachschool year.Ourprogramwillsupplythethingsneededineachclassroom.Ifyouwouldliketo contributemoresuppliesthroughouttheyear,contactyourchild’steacherdirectlytosee whatwouldbestfittheneedsoftheclassroom.

TOILETING

Childrenmustbefullypottytrained,wearingunderwearfull-time,andindependentin usingthebathroomtoattendaPre-Kclass.PullUpsarenotallowed.

VISITINGTHECLASSROOM

Pleasecontactyourchild’steacherifyouwanttovisittheclassroom.Wehaveparent activities(readabook,helpwithasmallgroup,eatlunch,etc.)thatyoucanparticipate inwiththechildrenintheclassroom.Ifyouareinterestedinvolunteeropportunitieswith ourprogram,pleasecontactyourchild’steacherformoreinformation.

BIRTHDAYS

DuetogrowingconcernswithfoodallergiesandinalignmentwiththeDistrictEquity Vision,birthdaytreats,food,gifts,invitationsandcardswillnotbedistributedatschool andtheywillbereturnedhome.

HOLIDAYSANDOTHERCELEBRATIONS

Pre-KbuspoliciesarealittledifferentthanthatofK-12 sothatwecanensurethesafetyoftheyoungchildren.

Bereadyandwaitingatleastfiveminutesbeforepick-upordrop-offtime.

Busdriverswillnotwaitmorethan30secondsatpick-upanddrop-offtimes.

Theparent,anotherdesignatedadultoroldersiblingNEEDStobewithyourchildat thepick-upanddrop-offlocationandmustwaitoutsidewiththestudentuntilthe buscomesforpickup.

Keepyourchild’sbustagprovidedbyschoolattachedand/orinsidethebackpackat alltimesthroughouttheentireschoolyear.

Ifthereisnoonewaitingtogetyourchildoffthebusatdropofftime,yourchildwillbe broughtbacktoschoolandyouwillneedtoarrangepick-uptransportation.Ifthis happensmorethantwotimes,ameetingwillbearrangedwithaprogramcoordinator andyourchildmaynotbeabletoridethebus.

PleasekeepinmindthatbustransportationisaprivilegeforPre-Kchildrenandschool districtandsafetyguidelinesaresetinplacetokeepallkidsandfamiliessafe.Failureto followguidelinesmayresultinalossofbusprivileges.Pre-Kschoolbusguidelineswillbe giventofamiliesatthebeginningoftheschoolyear.

Whenthreateningweatherisforecastoroccurring,thedistrictmonitorsbothweather androadwayinformationtodetermineifschoolshouldbeheld.

Ifthereisadaywhenparentsbelievethatschoolsshouldbecancelled,theymaydecide tokeeptheirchildrenhomeeventhoughschoolsareopenthatday.Thedistrictattempts tokeepschoolsopenifpossibleinordertominimizefamilyschedulingconflictsandto provideasmucheducationalopportunityforstudentsaspossible.

IMPETIGO:Ifachildisdiagnosedwithskinlesions,golden-yellowdischargethatdries, crustsandstickstotheskinaroundthenose,mouth,armsorlegs,treatmentwith antibioticsfor48hoursisrequiredbeforereturningtoclass.Rashesshouldbeseenby thechild’sdoctor.

PINKEYE:Eyesappearredwithadischarge.Childneedstobetreatedwithan antibioticfor24hourspriortoreturningtoclass.

RESPIRATORYSYNCYTIALVIRUS(RSV):Acommoncauseforbronchiolitisand pneumoniaininfantsandchildrenunderage2.Pleasekeepyourchildathomeuntil theyarewithoutfeverfor24hours.Pleaseinformyourteacher.

SORETHROAT:Ifyourchildhasbeendiagnosedwithastrepinfection,thechildshould beonantibiotics24hoursbeforereturningtoclass.

VOMITING:Twoormoreepisodesinthe12hourspriortoclass.

HEADLICE:Yourchildisnotrequiredtostayhomeandyoudonotneedtoreporthead licetoyourchild’steacher.Iflicehavebeenfound,treatmentshouldbedoneathome.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Minnesotalawrequiresstudentstobeimmunizedagainstcertaindiseasesorhavea signed,legalmedicalorconscientiousexemptionkeptinthestudenthealthrecord.

LATEX-REDUCEDENVIRONMENTS

RosevilleAreaSchoolsiscommittedtoprovidinglearningandworkenvironmentsthat arehealthyandsafeforallstudentsandstaff.Tothisend,alldistrictschoolsand instructionalsupportfacilitieshavebeendesignatedaslatex-reducedenvironments. Thefollowingguidelinesareinplaceatalldistrictschoolsandinstructionalsupport facilities:

LatexballoonsarerestrictedfromRosevilleAreaSchoolsfortheprotectionofstudents andstaffwhohavelatexallergies.Theycontainlargeamountsoflatexresidueand, therefore,carrythemostdangerforallergicreactions.

Latexproductsofallkindshavebeenremovedfromhealthoffices.Thedistrictwill makeeveryefforttoorderlatex-freeproducts(naturalrubberproducts).Inareas suchasscienceclassrooms,latexequipmentmaystillbeinusebecauselatexfree alternativesareunavailable.Ifastudenthasaknownlatexallergy,latexwillnotbe usedinthatclassroom.

Wecontinuetodevelopawarenessofotherlatexproductsthatarebeingusedinour schools.Weeitherreplacethemwithlatexfreealternatives,orifreplacementsarenot available,wefocusonreducingtheuseoftheseproducts.

CHILDABUSEREPORTING

Statelawrequiresthatanystaffpersonreportsuspectedchildabuseandneglecttothe RamseyCountyHumanServicesDepartment

BULLYINGPREVENTIONPOLICY

Inalignmentwiththedistrict,wearecommittedtopreventingandrespondingtoactsof bullying,intimidation,violence,andotherprohibitedconduct.RosevilleAreaSchoolshas revisedPolicy508-BullyingProhibitiontocomplywiththerequirementsoftheSafeand SupportiveSchoolAct,MNStatutes121a.031.

Bullyingincludes:repeated,intimidating,threatening,abusive,orharmingconductthat substantiallyinterfereswithastudent’seducationalopportunitiesorperformance,ability toparticipateinschoolfunctionsoractivitiesorreceiveschoolbenefits,servicesor privileges.Thisincludescyberbullying,whichistheuseoftechnologyorotherelectronic communicationtransmittedthroughacomputer,cellphoneorotherelectronicdeviceto bully.

Noteacher,administratororotheremployeeoftheschooldistrictwillknowinglypermit, condoneortoleratebullying.Theschooldistrictwillinvestigatecomplaintsofbullyingby studentsandtakeappropriateactionagainstanystudentwhoisfoundtohaveviolated thispolicy.
