Astheweathercoolsanddaysgrowshorter,manytreesputona stunningdisplayofcolor fieryreds,goldenyellows,andwarm oranges.Thesechangesarebeautifultowatch,butarealsopartof animportantprocessthathelpstreesgetreadyforwinter!

Treeswithleavesthatchangecolorinfallarecalleddeciduoustrees.Thesetreesusuallyhave broadleavesthataregreenthroughspringandsummerbecauseofchlorophyll,apigmentthat helpsthemturnsunlightintofood.Inautumn,withlesssunlightandcoolertemperatures, chlorophyllbreaksdown.Thisrevealsyellowandorangepigmentsthatwerehiddenduringthe growingseason.Sometrees,likeoaksanddogwoods,alsoproduceredorpurplepigmentsfrom sugarstrappedintheleaves achemicalchangeuniquetofall!

Didyouknowthatthebrightnessoffallcolorsdependsontheweather?Thebestdisplayscome fromsunnydaysandcool,drynights.Warmorrainyweatherusuallymeansdullercolors.

Eventually,theleavesfall.Treesbegintocloseofftheareabetweentheleafandthebranch,pulling nutrientsbackinside.Sincetheleaveswouldn’tsurvivewinterandcouldcausedamageifleft,the treeletsthemgo,restingbarethroughthecoldermonthsuntilspringreturns!
