Rose Mary Ben Project Title : Elevating Kettuvallams into Floating Celebration Hub Location : Vembanad Lake, Kottayam, Kerala Typology : Kettuvallam is a boat that has been commonly used in Kerala, India. It comes in a wide range of shapes and sizes since the old days. Kettuvallams were initially used to transport rice and spices through the intricate network of canals, but over time, they have been transformed into luxurious floating accommodations for tourists, offering a serene and immersive experience of Kerala’s backwaters. Site Area Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest in the state of Kerala, situated in the southwestern part of the country. It spans several districts and covers an area of around 200 square kilometers. Start of toursim -Trade collapsed. -Foreigners started arriving seeking a more rural experience. -First “house boat”. -Barely sufficient or adequate. -Just kerosene lamps for light. -a very basic boat -one major problem: no toilets
LATE 1990s Upgraded Facilities - International tourists came in search of ayurveda - a bedroom was added -provisions to make tea and list added up. - sewage and kitchen waste into the lake - Traditional cusine served

Architectural Aesthetics
Rules and restriction
While preserving the basic structure, houseboats began incorporating elements of modern architecture and design - Double deckers - air conditioning, comfortable bedding, western-style toilets
-mechanically-propelled vessels - lost thoughts of aerodynamics - After the boat tragedies, government standardized sizes safety measures - registration, survey papers, pollution control board’s sanction letter, and insurance -Under KIV rules

Sewage disposal - a sewage treatment plant not far from where the boats dock. - Now, Sewage waste is collected from bio-tanks on the boats. - Every three months, boats were taken to the sewage treatment plant and get the tanks cleaned.

Eco-Friendly Designs
Innovations in Materials
- solar panels - rainwater harvesting systems, energy-efficient appliances to minimize their ecological impact.
- lightweight and durable materials for construction - Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and other composite materials began to replace traditional wooden planks - Enhancing durability and reducing maintenance

WOODEN BOATS - STITCHING PLANKS -Wild Jack tree (Anjili) is used. -Ties(stitches) 2 planks using coir -Gaps in between the planks using cotton, staw and coir -First coating with fish oil. -Final coating with Tar.
-Takes more than 100 days for construction -Smaller boats -Requires local craftsmanship
- Fibre based Hulls - Easy maintainance - Once damaged, looses lisence.
- Ussually used for smaller boats and fishing boats. -Not a very successful typology

METAL HULLS -Very high maintainance -Takes upto 90 days for construction.
-Easy Hulls made out of MS Steel maintainance. Paint and emulsion coatings - Defects don’t spread. for waterproofing -Can take heavy loads. Watertight construction -weight balancing Flat bottoms( Like Barge)- due techniques aligned to decreased water levels with the planning of Came into effect after KIV superstructure rules were introduced Bulkheads, collision heads, webs
Evolution based on routes The choice of boat typology in Kerala’s navigable areas is influenced by the specific region. In the case of Kumarakom, there is a trend towards enormous boats, which can sometimes give rise to overcrowded structures. This shift is partly driven by the increasing popularity of Kumarakom, known for its resorts and Ayurveda treatments, attracting a larger influx of people. Consequently, there is a growing need for increased intervention and regulation to manage the proliferation of these large, imposing floating structures in the Kumarakom area.

The Alappuzha region features small waterways, fields of rice paddies, coir industries, and a mix of cottages and houses along the shores. The unique charm of cruising in this area lies in its interactive experience, with smaller Shikkara model boats allowing for a more intimate exploration of the scenic landscape.
The lake in the Kumarakom region is wide and has islands and a bird sanctuary in the middle. Because of this, the boats in the area are bigger. You can’t hop on and off during the cruise, but the boats have large open decks where you can enjoy the views. Also they hace long time cruising. larger open decks

The use of houseboats in Kerala has evolved beyond simple sightseeing, offering a diverse array of experiences. These houseboats have grown substantially in size, resembling giants of the backwaters, reaching lengths of up to 140 feet and featuring double decks. While they boast a capacity for 100 to 150 people, the overcrowded conditions can make it challenging to accommodate such large numbers for events and leisure.

4G : Statement
4G Statement The aim of this project is to conceptualize and develop a ‘Floating Celebration Hub’ in Kerala, that combines the rich cultural heritage of state’s houseboat tradition with the growing trend of destination events/ceremonies. This approach seeks to offer a culturally immersive experience while addressing the challenge of accommodating large no. of people within the limited space of a houseboat. To achieve this, modular boats can be docked to a portable floating dock system, creating a flexible and spacious event venue, redefining the traditional houseboat experience. During the off-season, these modular units can operate

Project brief The project aims to create a unique and culturally immersive experience in Kerala, India, by developing a ‘Floating Celebration Hub.’ Kerala’s traditional Kettuvallam boats, once used for transporting rice and spices, have evolved into luxurious accommodations for tourists exploring the backwaters. The idea is to transform these houseboats into versatile event spaces that go beyond sightseeing. The project envisions a hub that caters to various celebrations, including weddings, conferences, and parties, combining the rich cultural heritage of Kerala with the trend of destination events. To overcome the challenge of accommodating large groups in the limited space of a houseboat, a modular approach is proposed. Modular boats can be attached to a portable floating dock system, creating a flexible and spacious venue. This innovation allows for the seamless hosting of events while preserving the tranquility of the backwaters. During the off-season, these modular units can operate independently, ensuring the sustainability of the project. The Floating Celebration Hub addresses the evolving preferences of tourists, offering not only scenic sightseeing but also the opportunity to create cherished memories during special events. The project seeks to redefine the traditional houseboat experience by providing a platform for cultural immersion and a unique backdrop for celebrations. With its adaptability and cultural significance, the hub aims to attract a diverse range of events, from intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, contributing to the growth of tourism in Kerala. This initiative not only enhances the tourism experience but also showcases the potential of traditional practices meeting modern needs.
