PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we publish Missing Link for Term 2 we all have the chance to reflect on what a significant term it was. We all have a new vocabulary of words like “COVID-19”, “coronavirus”, “unprecedented” “physical distancing” and we have re-used words like isolation, quarantine, hygiene and hand sanitiser.

More critically for Rooty Hill High School we have learnt a lot about online learning via Google, Teams and Zoom. We have had almost no sport and certainly none of the excursions that usually fill Term 2 despite the fact that we only missed about 6 weeks of school overall.

We were able to hold our Reconciliation Week lessons online; we were able to have students feature in case studies and programs online; we learnt how well we can communicate using online technologies and we completed personalised learning conversations – we just did it differently.

I need to thank staff and parents for the way they have worked together to ensure wellbeing, get devices and connectivity for all students, ensure assessment and reporting tasks were completed and find creative ways for us to continue to ensure every students was known, valued and cared for – whether they were at school or learning from home.

I have never been prouder to be a teacher than I was this term as the profession and teachers at this school delivered a completely new set of learning platforms.

I want to say a special thank you to the Maths faculty who, because everyone was a bit worried about progress in maths during COVID-19, created Maths Week for Week 10A and I want to thank teachers from every faculty for a wonderful week.

I also want to congratulate Year 8 students and the staff teams leading the Career Explorer’s program. We had a wonderful opportunity to be one of the first schools in Australia to complete an online program with a major company – Origin.

Congratulations to Year 9 who completed a combination of online and subject based workbook programs. It took a bit longer to get all Year 9 connected to devices and I want to thank students for their help and cooperation. Almost all students in Year 9 met the key academic outcomes for Semester 1 despite the interruptions.

I want to say a special acknowledgement to the majority of Year 10 students who worked with us to get connected, complete their assessment tasks and act as pioneers as we trialled new ways of working online. Year 10 students have been keen to get feedback and ensure they have met minimum standards for the HSC by completing the NESA minimum standards tests.

Congratulations to Year 11 students who have worked well with the new fortnightly cycles and who have made progress despite the impact of lost time due to COVID-19. Term 3 is the end of the Preliminary Course and we look forward to seeing what students achieve.

There is little doubt that, while COVID-19 will have some long term impacts, in the short term our Year 12 students have had to be the most adaptable and flexible; they have had to face the most immediate effects of the current situation and have had to “act fast” in responding.

Perhaps the most repeated phrase of this term was “We’re All in this Together”. This is true for #TeamRootyHill. We were successful in Term 2 because staff, students and parents committed to our purposes and helped us, as a school, move forward together.

I would like to extend my thanks and wish all staff, families and students a safe and healthy start of next term. We hope to return to a more “normal” operation and have planned some activities that we hope to be able to do together. I am looking forward to the new term.

On Thursday 2 July we said our farewells to Monica McGrane, our long standing Enrolment Officer. Monica has decided to retire and we wish her all the very best.

Monica came to our school in 1993 and in the last 27 years held roles working on attendance, general office duties, managing new administrative technology (when all technology was very new) and, over the years, mentoring many new school administration officers.

To ensure this, Monica worked with each Year Adviser, the Head Teachers of the Junior and Senior school, the Deputy Principals and the Principal. Her expertise and her compassion for our most vulnerable students and their families were highly valued in the school and the community.

Monica has decided to spend more time with her grandchildren and to make a new life in a lovely area of south western Sydney. We wish her every joy and a very happy retirement.

would suit them best. Therefore, timing is critical to ensure students have this information to make more informed decisions for choosing their elective subjects for Year 9.

Year 12 back to major works

This year, the RHHS and Origin team had to do things a little differently. With lockdown and physical distancing requirements, what was already a highly innovative program, demanded the team think outside-the-box in order to ensure our Year 8’s still had a good opportunity.

With months of preparation, the re-invented Explorers Program literally went live in the last week of May. All 198 Year 8 Students experienced a series of online interactive presentations with a member of the Entrepreneurial Education Team and live Q and A panels with volunteers from Origin and The Origin Foundation from across Australia. Over a period of 4 weeks, every year 8 student had access to 24 Volunteers from Origin and Origin Foundation who openly shared their career stories, skills, hopes for the future and advice to students who may be interested in careers common to their particular skill sets.

Year 8 Explorers Program

The Year 8 Explorers Program, part of the Rooty Hill Robana: “how does working from home affect your High School’s Entrepreneurial Education strategic plan, job?” provides hands on programs and experiences for all Year Steven (Origin): I think the social interaction is less 8 students. Year 8 Explorers Program – online.

ANZAC Assembly

This year, our school commemorated ANZAC Day a little differently to commemorations of the past due to COVID-19. Our focus this year was on 'Volunteers' and we tied our commemoration to thanking the ANZACs and the many men and women who acted as volunteers both at the front line and at home. We linked this idea with thanking our local volunteers who served our community so valiantly during the bushfire crisis and essential workers assisting the community during COVID-19. We were able to reach our community through an online platform to commemorate not only our Diggers, but also our local heroes from generations past and present. Students were able to listen to Mr. Les Tapuska, a Navy Veteran and long-term community volunteer, share his experiences. Students were able to hear stories of Les’ service during the Vietnam War and experiences he had while in his role as a Deputy Controller with the SES. Students were able to hear the stories of the famous Sock Knitter of WWI, the women working in factories during WWII and the many local heroes who help our community on a daily basis, all evoking the spirit of ANZAC. We were able to see the link to our PERSIST value of ‘Participation’ and students were asked if they thing they are active participants of our school community. The commemoration provided students with the opportunity to compose a letter to a local volunteer and give thanks for their tireless efforts. Through our ability to connect online with students during COVID-19, we were able to remember and honour those who have served and continue to serve our country and honour those who while not serving at the front, contribute to our society and uphold the legacy of our ANZACs. Maths Weak? Maths Week!

The last week of Term 2 was our first ever Maths Week!

All the lessons for students in Years 7-10 incorporated Maths. These included such activities as; • • • • • •

Year 7

Year 8

In Term 2, 2020, Year 7 persisted with their online learning and "Task of the Day" booklets. We saw a staggered return of enthusiastic Year 7 students from the middle of the term, who were a delight to have back in the Rooty Hill community. Although we didn't necessarily return to 'normal' schooling, Year 7 were able to participate in fitness, dance and modified activities on their return. Year 7 also had their first attempt at writing their own report comments for each subject, which allowed them to reflect on their achievements and progress in each subject. In Week 8, Year 7 participated in their first reflection workshop, writing their own strength comments, a key feature in their reports. This was an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on their strengths and challenges they faced while starting high school and facing the extra obstacle of working from home. Overall, Year 7 demonstrated their year group strengths of tenacity and persistence while facing these challenges, and I am delighted to have them back at school and contributing positively to our community.

In Term 2, 2020, Year 8 has shown maturity beyond their years. At the start of the term Year 8 continued with their online learning joining Google Meets daily to assist with their learning. Students transitioned seamlessly back into 'normal' schooling showing enthusiasm and excitement to see their fellow peers and teachers. Once back at school, students continued to finish their Task of the Day booklets while participating in fitness and dance activities for school sport. Adding to this, Year 8 participated in a reflection assembly, Ms Pozoglou – Year 7 Adviser reflecting on their strengths they displayed while working from home. Year 9

In Term 2, 2020, Year 9 well and truly demonstrated their tenacity and resilience through the COVID-19 period. At the start of the term Year 9 adapted to a new form of learning, where they became key stakeholders in their learning by being responsible for their daily routines and sustained effort. Students were tasked with self-regulating their behaviours, learning habits and learnt new ways to persist through daily challenges and academic hurdles. Year 9 have truly embraced this new age of learning, and the perseverance they displayed, along with the connections made, will have long lasting positive effects on their growth and development as informed citizens and successful learners.

We are all very aware that this is a year like none before, and you have taken each new opportunity and challenge in your stride. I was amazed and awed reading your strengths comments at your ability to see the bright side and persevere. Many of you have a newfound appreciation of your teachers and face to face learning in the classroom, while also recognising your ability to learn and study independently through online learning.

In Week 1 last term, you participated in our first Virtual Anzac Assembly and lesson. Your HSIE teachers Complimenting the Learning From Home experience, commented on the quality of your work and high level of Year 9 participated in a reflection assembly, aimed at participation across the year group. You showed your video editing skills in both Mathematics and Science, where you had the opportunity to teach the teachers. Across the board you showed not only your ability to clearly convey the important information, but also your personality, humour and just how much you do pay attention to your teachers’ stories and corny jokes.

You had your first taste of Minimum Standards and completed the Reading and Writing tests with great success. I received several messages from your teachers highlighting the maturity you showed and seriousness at which you completed both the practice and actual examinations.

Several of you participated in Job Quest and sought support from our Careers Advisers, including how to apply for apprenticeships, complete job applications and discuss the pathway options you each have for the future. Additionally, you have all undertaken our rigorous Subject Selection process through PDHPE and participated in the first of a series of assemblies to guild and advise your subjects choices for the HSC. Overwhelming you have responded with eagerness and gratitude and shown how you are making the shift from junior students to seniors.

We finished the term with Maths Week, where you experienced a range of opportunities designed to highlight the fun side of Maths and how it appears in all your subjects. You danced up a storm with English, battled it out in HISE, collected data in PDHPE and solved the fictional murder of myself to end the week.

It is truly incredible the number of experiences we crammed into the 10 weeks of last term, considering we Year 11 students enjoying being back at school in Term 2. were physically at school full time for just 6 of them. It is a testament to your resolve and resilience that as our 2021 Senior Leadership Program much-loved sporting events were being cancelled, you have explored so many of your other talents and found new opportunities to grow and succeed.

I am always proud of you Year 10, and you continue to amaze, inspire and make me laugh with happiness every day. I hope you have all had a restful break and are ready for the new and exciting opportunities that await us in Term 3.

Year 11

Year Advisers Message Year 11 have made progress as they settled back into school this term despite the changes to RHHS’s usual routine. These have certainly been challenging times for us all and I would like to commend the Year 11 cohort for stepping up when times got tough. Thank you for adopting the new normal as Ms Land and I hosted Google Meet assembly sessions, posted regular information and checked in with you. We have enjoyed seeing many of our Year 11 students step back into the hand ball zone and reboot their skills once again, while others moved into the volleyball zone and connected with students from various years.

This term, Year 11 students were provided with information based on the 2021 Senior Leadership program. ‘Do you have what it takes?’ was the key question that students were presented with as they contemplated their capacity as a leader in the role of School Captain, Principal's Representative, SRC Chair, Sports Captain and Year Leader. In their roles and responsibilities within these positions, students will grow and improve as a leader as they contribute to the school community. Well done to those students that ‘have a go’.

Despite the transition to remote online learning, Year 12 were able to adapt and persist to stay well-connected with their learning.

Year Group Meeting via Google Meet Whilst students were quarantined due to the virus outbreak, Year 12 managed to stay connected through virtual meetings through Google Meets. Students were able to acquire information about certain topics such as HSC, trial examinations, VET courses and schooling in general. These meetings were designed to allow students to gain the opportunity for any concerns and questions to be addressed, resolve misunderstandings and ensure that students are up-to-date by being provided with current, relevant information for their schooling. The meetings were hosted by Year Advisor, Ms. Douglas, Head Teacher of Senior School, Ms. Munzie, and Ms. Corpuz, as well as featuring RHHS Principal, Ms. Cawsey and Year 11 students in their new senior jackets.

Remote Online Learning To adapt to the quarantined life, Year 12 experienced classes online in the comfort of their pyjamas. Students were given a modified timetable that focused on specialised masterclasses once a week for each subject’s

Year Group Google Classroom Check-Ins As Year 12 was learning from home, Ms. Douglas ensured that her year group was up to date with announcements and information through Google Classroom check-ins. These check-ins included information on university and early entry, resources for time management and wellbeing, as well as reminders that Ms. Douglas and Ms. Munzie were there for support if anyone was struggling. They also informed students of any changes happening in the week, especially when the transition from online schooling to face-to-face learning occurred. Ms. Douglas made it easier for Year 12 to obtain this information by creating news-style videos with all the announcements in it. This allowed the students to stay informed in an entertaining way, and it gave them an introduction to the school day before they had to complete their school work. ‘Brain Breaks’ were special segments organised by Ms. Corpuz who would recommend tips and tricks students can use to help deal with stress and wind down when studying. These google classroom check-ins were essential in receiving the latest information about current and upcoming events for year 12 throughout the term.

Year 12 Principals Report Meet

This term, Year 12 had their last Principal’s Report Meet, in which they received their HSC semester one reports. This was a very successful semester for Year 12, they received 1421 merit awards, 540 significant achievement awards, 29 outstanding report awards and five students received the last PERSIST awards of their high school career. During their assembly, Year 12 enjoyed a musical performance conducted by students from the HSC music class, and also the year group video, which played as a recap of semester one of Year 12. This Principal’s Report Meet allowed each student to receive their ranks and progress in each of their HSC subjects for semester one, allowing them to set goals that they would like to achieve during semester two.

Subject Study Sessions

In preparation for their Trial and HSC exams, students have been persistently studying and revising in the previous weeks leading up to their exam period. To ensure they were able to perform their best in the exams, students organised study sessions with their teachers outside of usual class time for extra guidance and assistance. Through this, students received helpful resources to further their understanding when studying for their exams. Year 12 has been working hard with diligence as they continue to revise content and do practice HSC questions as often as possible. And so, Year 12 would like to thank all the teachers who tirelessly put aside time to give them additional support.

Therefore, students were fully prepared by the time they sat the trial examinations in Week 9 and 10.

Trial Examinations From Friday Week 9 through to Friday of Week 10, Year 12 students sat their first major examinations for the year, their trials. Year 12 students studied hard to prepare for their exams and complete their trials successfully for their HSC. Year 12 was able to develop and demonstrate their dedication as well as positive attitudes as they arrived promptly to school for each exam scheduled according to their Trial HSC Timetable.

The trials are also a general indicator of how students will do in their official HSC exams as HSC conditions were applied as close as possible. Overall, Year 12 accomplished outstanding achievements in the results of their trials.

Subject Selection Videos During the term many Year 12 students helped teachers to develop videos for the Year 10 subject selection. This was fun for Year 12, but also helpful for our peers in younger cohorts. Year 12 students were able to be innovative and creative, as they had to develop a video that would be fun and interesting for the students but also have enough information for them so they understood what topics they were going to choose and how that would benefit them in the future. As Year 12 students we believed it was important that Year 10 heard 14

Life Beyond School - University Information for Year 12 As Year 12 begins to inch closer and closer to graduation, the entire year was treated to an information session about future opportunities in university tertiary education. The assembly was a sigh of relief for many of us, we saw that there were more opportunities than just what our ATAR was, and that there are many options to pursue a higher education if we so choose. One of the options shown was “True Rewards”, a scheme by Western Sydney university where applying students can receive entry according to a single subject grade rather than their entire ATAR. In an unpredictable economic situation, this presentation provided some confidence that we wouldn’t be left behind in Australia’s ever changing economic outlook. Programs from regional universities, city universities and even those right near our front door were a part of what Year 12 was shown.

Your dedication to your school community is evident in your participation in the Year 12 Google Classroom Year Meeting with Ms Cawsey, Ms Vuki, Ms Munzenberger, Ms Corpuz and myself at the beginning of this term, with over 70% of students in online attendance. This also allowed you to speak directly to your senior executive staff members and wellbeing team, and ask all the questions that were important to you, demonstrating your increased ability to positively advocate for yourself. You have shown that you are proud of your school community, by actively contributing to the ANZAC Assembly and Reconciliation Week Video and online activities. Your pride for your school also can be seen through your enthusiasm in assisting your teachers in the creation of the Year 10 Subject Selection videos, a school resource that will benefit cohorts transitioning into stage 6.

Passing on the knowledge that you have to others is a great way to forge a legacy and create connections between yourself and the school community for years to come. You end the term by completing HSC Trial examinations for many of your subjects. Trial examinations can be a stressful and perhaps even at times an overwhelming experience for many Year 12 students. As a cohort you have recognised that you have high expectations for yourself and your peers, and have worked together to reach these expectations. It has been great to observe and work with students in the library who have shown initiative to create their own study groups and schedules in the lead up to Trial examinations, and I hope that this is a trend that continues. Year 12, this term has shown that we can work through anything together. As you look back on your accomplishments, achievements and the challenges you faced this term, make sure that you congratulate yourself and your peers on how well you have worked as highly effective young people. As always, you have made me extremely proud to be your Year Adviser, remember to continue to always Make Yourself Proud!

The resiliency and enthusiasm of the students in this new climate for sport was a really positive reflection of the students of Rooty Hill High School. Looking forward to Term 3, as community sport returns, so too will some of the opportunities for sport within high schools. With this is mind we are waiting to hear of possible representative sporting opportunities as they becoming possible with procedures in place to maintain safety and hygiene in the post COVID era. We are also looking at how we can provide some intra-school competitions for the students of Rooty Hill High to keep the competitive juices flowing.

Sport

Physical activity and sport at Rooty Hill High School looked a little different in Term 2, with restrictions in place for close contact sports, and school favourites such as basketball and volleyball restricted for a short period of time. But the students of Rooty Hill High school stayed active with handball becoming the new favourite game during breaks, and modified cricket and softball games played in PDHPE classes. Year 7,8 and 9 grade sport saw the year groups participating in fitness activities that really had the students breaking a sweat, 16

Announcement In 2020, we will introduce a new competition that is available to all students. The new 'Health and Fitness' competition will be split into a junior and senior division, with each division having a male and female category. All the information for the new competition will be delivered through the Sport Google Classroom as well the Health and Fitness Google site. Good luck to everyone involved and get training!

Announcement In Term 2 we launched Rooty Hill High School's own health and fitness website to keep the students, families and staff of Rooty Hill healthy and active whilst at home during lock down. The PDHPE staff created over 30 workouts which are all available online; along with a page full of different exercises to learn; and a createyour-own workout section to help you with all your exercise needs. The best thing about the Health and Fitness site is that all the workouts require minimal to no equipment, so even as the restrictions relax and we slowly move into our new normal, the Health and Fitness site will be ready and waiting for the Rooty Hill High family to access.
