Rollins Alumni Record October 1970 GOLF TEAM NATIONAL CHAMPS! June 30th’s GOLF WORLD features the Rollins College Men’s Golf team for their victory in the 1970 NCAA College Division Tournament at Avalon and Avalon Lakes golf courses in Warren, Ohio. Rollins carded a 1,195 team total. Rollins golfers were Tom Cavicchi ’71, Fred Schick ’72, Guy Ashley ’72, Mike Brelsford ’71, Taylor Metcalfe ’72 and Mike Ford ’73. They were coached by Joe Justice ’40, Athletic Director for Rollins College

SPEAKERS BUREAU UNDEFEATED The Rollins College Speakers Bureau, coached

by Dr. Charles A. Rodgers, finished the year undefeated. They won three Model United Nations, the final victory in New York where over 123 different colleges and universities from across the nation competed in the highly prestigious National Model United Nations. The team was judged, in addition to

their level of competence in public speaking, on their knowledge of public affairs, ability to innovate, knowledge of Roberts Rules and team cohesiveness. The Rollins team was composed of Douglas Allen ’71, Verlie Mayo ’72, Michael Dornish ’71 and Marguerite Monroe ’72.

FOLK GROUP TAKES TOP HONORS The Drambuies, a folksinging group from Rollins College won the 1970 National Intercollegiate Music Festival in August, after defeating more than 1,500 collegiate folk and pop groups for the coveted honor.

The Rollins group, composed of Jeff Danys ’71, Kathryn “Casey’’ Law ’72 and Dick MacLeod ’70, recently won the southeastern regional competition to advance to the national competition at the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale, Illinois. In regional competition at Tampa in February the Drambuies received the only perfect score sheet and the highest total score of any contestant in either folk or pop

categories. The Drambuies are well known to many Alumni as they have entertained several times at Reunion festivities, in addition to performing for the Pittsburgh Alumni Club.

February 1971 THERE IS A MOUSE IN OUR FUTURE “October, 1971, is the scheduled date for the opening of Walt Disney World. This $300-million “Vacation Kingdom” is being put together like a jigsaw puzzle on the 27,400-acre Disney site, southwest of Orlando. The jigsaw puzzle analogy breaks down at the point of the “last piece” however, since, following the philosophy of California’s Disneyland, its creators have vowed that the “last piece” will never be put into place. A vital part of the Disney approach is continual change and improvement.”

BASKETBALL TEAM VICTORIOUS The Rollins basketball team started the new season with a surprise win against the strongly favored University of Georgia’s Bulldogs. They went on to repeat their performance with a win against Lehigh in the first home game of the year, which was also Alumni Night and largely attended, and again against Atlantic Christian.

Unfortunately, their first defeat came from Stetson in an away-from-home game. For the first time, the Enyart-Alumni Field House this year hosted the Tangerine Bowl Basketball Tournament December 29 and 30, under the sponsorship of the Orlando Daily Sentinel. In the first round the Tars lost to Ohio University 81-70, and Seton Hall edged Stetson 61-60. In the finals, Ohio University trimmed Seton Hall for the championship 84-82, and Stetson claimed its first Field House win over Rollins 67-57.

The Tars ended the 1970 portion of the cage season with a 4-3 record.

Rollins Alumni Record FRATERNITIES AND ONE SORORITY GO LOCAL The Pi Beta Phi sorority

SOCCER TEAM RECEIVED COVETED BID The Tars, coached by Gordon Howell,

announced in October that their chapter at Rollins is no longer affiliated with the National Group. They joined two fraternities who localized last year, the Delta Chi’s and the Lambda Chi’s. Other fraternities and sororities completed a successful Rush, with the Alpha Phi’s pledging 22, Chi Omega’s 12, Kappa Alpha Theta’s 26 (the highest), Kappa Kappa Gamma’s 20 and the Phi Mu’s 10. The former Pi Phi’s, now known as the NCM group (Non Compos Mentis), did not take any pledges, but nine freshman girls joined as charter members. The men’s Rush succeeded with the Sigma Nu’s leading with 17 pledges, followed by Sigma Phi Epsilon 15, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Lambda’s (formerly Lamba Chi Alpha’s) 14 each, X Club 12, Phi Delta Theta’s 9, Kappa Alpha 6, and the Guild (formerly Delta Chi) with 2. It is estimated that the campus at present is 50% Greek.

received an invitation to the N.C.A.A. Atlantic Coast College Division Regional Soccer Championship in Elizabethtown, Pa. Known as the prestige soccer tournament among colleges east of the Mississippi River, the Atlantic Regional deals the top four teams in the Eastern United States. The Rollins Tars is the first college team in the south to ever go to the northern-dominated tourney.

SIGMA NU’S HEAD FALL TERM INTRAMURALS The Sigma Nu Fraternity finished first in both intramural flag football and table tennis and second in tennis to lead in total intramural points at the end of the 1970 fall term. Second in total points were the Independents (with a first in tennis and second in table tennis), followed by Lambda (formerly Lambda Chi Alpha), TKE, Sigma Phi Epsilon, X Club, Guild (formerly Delta Chi), Phi Delta Theta and KA. In

Women’s Intramurals to date, archery was won by Pi Phi (now N.C.M.), basketball by the Freshmen, and Alpha Phi leads in total points toward the O’Brien Trophy.

June 1971 STUDENT CENTER COMMITTEE BRINGS SPEAKERS TO CAMPUS The Student Center Committee added the well-known Pat Paulsen to the group of speakers they have brought to the campus this year. Preceding Paulsen the Educational Entertainment Committee hosted Dick Gregory, Ralph Nader and Senator Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut.

TWO DORMS TO BE AIR-CONDITIONED Next year’s residents of Holt and Chase Hall will enjoy the comfort of air-conditioning, for the units have been ordered for these two buildings to be installed this summer at the cost of $35,000. By air conditioning these resident halls they will be available for use during the summer by groups who rent the college facilities. This summer the college expects to earn around $40,000 in this manner, helping to take care of the overhead costs and pay for further air-conditioning of residence halls. These two dorms were chosen because they already have air ducts built into them and only need the machinery to complete the project.

Rollins Alumni Record DEAN HILL RESIGNS President Critchfield

COMMENCEMENT 1971 NEWS The

announced in early spring the resignation of Dr. Donald W. Hill as Dean of the College.

The resignation will go into effect at the end of this school year, although Dean Hill took a leave of absence beginning in March for the entire spring. Dr. Allen Norris, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, is serving as acting dean during the spring, but Dean Hill is available for consultation. Dean Hill became Dean in 1966 after teaching regularly in the economics department since 1962 and serving as Dean of Administrative Affairs for one year. As Chairman of the Curriculum Committee he helped create the “Hour Glass” Curriculum initiated in 1966.

Honorable Peter T. Fay, 42-year-old Rollins College Alumnus and youngest man ever to be appointed a Federal Judge, spoke at combined commencement exercises of Rollins’ Central Florida School for Continuing Studies, Patrick Air Force Base Branch, and Evening Graduate Programs on Saturday, May 22, in the EnyartAlumni Field House.

Degrees were conferred upon 469 graduates in ceremonies that were followed by a reception for graduates and guests given

by President and Mrs. Jack B. Critchfield.

Commencement ceremonies for 196 Rollins College Bachelor of Arts candidates and 24 Master of Business Administration candidates were held on Sunday, May 23, in the Enyart-Alumni Field House.

Had a chance to work in retail, marketing, newspaper publishing but my best job was as a mom to three kids who are really nice people. Travelled the world, did lots of community theater, involved in local activities - school w/kids, private plane flying, book clubs, golf, Red Hats, hiking, cruising Main St., arts groups. Still love living in a big house so visitors are always welcome AP - After the Pandemic.

Life Since Rollins: Since graduation, I have worked in education, with a brief stint in retail. My husband Bob Barry (Class of 73) and I have remained in Florida for most of the past 48 years. My greatest accomplishment is raising our two sons, Ryan and Patrick, and now helping to care for our two grandsons, Mason (7) and Dylan (5).

There was also a time I cared for my mother who had dementia before she passed at the age of 98. Following that I entered the world of antiques and collectibles, selling in two different shops.

Over 48 wonderful years of marriage we have done a lot of traveling. Also through the years I have been active in the church.

Over the past 50 years I have been blessed.

Never would I imagine what I would accomplish as I first stepped foot on the Rollins Campus. With such a small school

we were fortunate to have a very close knit group of professors who cared and classmates who were an integral part of our lives for 4 years. To me, Rollins wasn’t just a school it was a community of friends, brothers and sisters, teammates and mentors. Rollins not only taught me academics but taught me life. It grounded me and to this day causes me to look back and laugh at all the great times I had and all the great lessons I learned.

Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedics at Seton Hall and enjoy teaching residents and medical students. I have invented and patented many medical devices used in surgery and have started 2 medical device companies. With the University of Pittsburgh School of Bioengineering I invented a system of in-body communication with medical implants and nanosensors. I have also lectured and participated in Hand research at the Cleveland Clinic.

After Rollins I spent a year studying and working in Italy and throughout Europe. I learned another language and met so many people who inspired me to live life to the fullest.

Personally I have had a wonderful family life.

I have two sons and four grandchildren who I love dearly. My wife Kathy gave me love and helped guide me. She passed away but her memory inspires me and my family.

Upon returning home I used my premedical major background from Rollins to go to medical school followed by a 5 year Orthopaedic Surgery residency in New Jersey. For the past 37 years I have been an Orthopaedic Surgeon in northern New Jersey. I am President of Orthopaedic Associates, a multi specialty group. I am

I now have Sue Ellen and I would never imagine how wonderful and fun she could be. Together we are enjoying all life has to offer together with our families.

In summary, 50 years since Rollins! I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

What went through your mind on your first day as a student? I remember thinking how beautiful the campus was. I loved the Spanish moss in the trees and the way the air smelled. I felt ready for a new experience, but I absolutely hated the stupid freshman beanie.

Life Since Rollins: After Rollins, I married my classmate, Roger Hurlburt. The marriage lasted for 5 years, but Roger fostered a permanent interest for me in sport fishing and art history. We lived in Florence, Italy for six months while he worked on his PhD and traveled all over Europe looking at art--one of my great life experiences. I went back to law school in Boston in 1976, became a lawyer in 1979, remarried in 1981 and had my two children (a daughter and a son) at the ripe old ages of 38 and 41. We lived in Carlisle, MA (next to Concord) in a rambling, 1790 colonial farmhouse on 18 acres of land until we moved to Chevy Chase, MD in 1999 where we spent the next 16 years. In 2015, I retired and moved by myself to Winter Park!

I’ve always wanted to write and the time is now. I’ve also taken photographs for years and they are begging for attention. As a rabid sports fan, my Sox, Celts, Bruins and Pats keep me connected with my Boston buddies, but I watch everything. Curling? My daughter went to USC so Trojans always. I’m a lucky girl. My wanderlust and good health

have taken me all over the world. When my son was lost and confused after his sophomore year at Tulane, I suggested we get out of D.C. and take a look. For 35 days, in the summer of 2012, we went around the world together--Morocco, Venice, Moscow, India, Bangkok, Singapore, and Japan. We planned the trip ourselves, and this was deliberately no “luxe” trip. We covered the gamut of accommodations from basic to elegant. We took planes, trains, buses, and even the Moscow subway, schlepping our bags all the way. I wanted him to see how the world lives and how people move around and get things done. The lessons, memories, and photos are forever. I’ve had so many wonderful experiences--lived in Italy off and on for 10 summers, lived in Kitzbuhel for a winter where I watched my 4 year old daughter learn to ski, spent time in Hong Kong, and then there’s always Paris. I have a Bermudian driver’s license--not easy to get.

Ferris Bueller said it best, “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Truth.

Life Since Rollins: I moved to a small town in Ontario Canada after college. No paying tech theatre jobs. Re-careered.

Got my MILS degree. Spent 20 years at The Hastings County Board of Education as Professional Development Librarian and later Manager of Instructional Media.

Moved back to Cocoa Beach, Florida after 25 years in Canada, and spent many years as Coordinator of Adult Programming and Reference Librarian at Cocoa Beach Public Library. My theatre experience paid off. I put on many well attended programs in this tourist/snowbird area, featuring musicians, best selling authors, world champion surfers, astronauts, sea bean festivals, you name it.

It was pure stage management. I won the Outstanding Achievement Award (Librarian of the Year, back when awards were given out.) I went to my high school 40th reunion, and met many people I hadn’t seen in years. Among them Tim Hester, whom I had

known since 7th grade. A few years later he retired from USGS in Colorado and moved back to Florida to surf. I was widowed, and we started seeing each other and have been married since 2013. He shares my love of flying and sailing. I have a beautiful daughter, Britta, who lives in Canada with her husband and identical 6 years old twin daughters. We visit often (except for THIS weird year). Tim and I are retired and live on the Indian River in Cocoa, Florida.

Life Since Rollins: Starting college in 1967, I was obliged to wear the infamous Rollins Beanie identifying me as a naive Freshman!

Although I was a Chemistry major, I hailed from a show business family and dabbled in Theater Arts in my spare time. My scholarship work assignment was with the Annie Russell Theatre as Box Office Staff

and the Door Man during performances. I was in charge of a cadre of lovely usherettes mostly from the Alpha Phi Sorority including Maralyn Johnson (’71), Barbara Canaday (’70), Joye Davidson (’71), and others. In 1968, I tried out for the Rollins Players ’67’68 Season casting call for the musical, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” directed by Prof. Robert Juergens. I got the part of a “Protean” that was actually four separate roles as soldier, citizen, slave, and eunuch. The part involved crazy costume changes. I would wear an armour chest plate loosely affixed with masking tape, while acting the part of a gruff Centurion one minute. The next minute, I

was backstage with the stage hands ripping off my chest plate as I quickly donned a hooded robe and ran back on stage (now with a falsetto voice) as a Eunuch in charge of the “Courtesans.” One of the most memorable lines in the play was when the Purveyor of Courtesans, Marcus Lycus told me, “If you don’t straighten up you will be a eunuch all your life!” I was exhausted after all the performances but I had the pleasure of working with a great cast of actors and stage crew.

I later got involved in making 8 mm movies and Rush films on campus for the Alpha Phi Sorority. We also had fun making a short film called “Mission Escapade” (a takeoff on the “Mission Impossible” TV show) with the role of Mr. Phelps was played by Cindy White (Alpha Phi ’72). I also produced a short film called, “The Master Fisherman” starring J.

Michael Dornish (’71) and Robert Maynard (’71). Later, Prof. Juergens called on me to help the Winter Park Police Department make a “Don’t Talk to Strangers” video short for children. I was the camera man shooting high up on on a platform crane in a heavy breeze! I took Physical Education courses and a Swimming and Canoeing class from a real character, Fleet Peeples. I recall watching him teach tiny toddlers how to swim the old-fashioned way, by dunking them underwater! Peeples had all of us go under Lake Virginia at the Rollins Dock in a Sponge Diving Helmet with supplied air. We bobbed around on the bottom like crabs.

We all swam and dove in the lake at that as it was much cleaner in 1970. I canoed all over the Rollins interconnecting lakes with my classmate Mike Dornish and my girlfriend, Barbara Canaday (Alpha Phi ’70), who later became Mrs. Hobart.

In 1968 I had a brief involvement in politics by joining the Young Democrats Club. The presidential election was in full swing. The deadpan comedian Pat Paulsen from the Smothers Brothers TV show was running a sham presidential campaign with the fictitious “Straight Talking American Government (S.T.A.G.) Party.” Paulsen said, “It is time for a “Stag Party” in the White House!” For fun, a group of us promoted the Paulsen candidacy with signs and posters. We even had sorority sisters pass out Hershey’s “Kisses for Pat Paulsen” in the crowd when candidate Senator Eugene McCarthy and others spoke on the Mills Memorial Library in May 1968. Two years later, Paulsen came to campus on a lecture tour entitled, “Looking Back at the 70’s”. I was assigned to pick him up at the Airport and host his very entertaining visit. When I asked for his autograph, in typical Paulsen

In my Junior and Senior years, chemistry was taking up more of my time with no time for theater. My new scholarship job was as a chemistry lab assistant for Prof.

Herbert Hellwege. Prof. Hellwege managed to teach me enough Physical Chemistry for me to pass the course. I was inspired by the charismatic Prof. George Cochran who taught Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry.

I also learned a great deal of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry from Prof.

Eric Blossey. My interest later focused on electrochemistry, the topic of my Senior Chemistry Research paper.

In 1971, I graduated Rollins with a Bachelor’s degree. My draft deferment was up and President Nixon wrote me a letter to come join the war in Viet Nam! I politely declined by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. I served four years as an Electronic Maintenance Specialist on the SR-71 “Blackbird” Reconnaissance Aircraft stationed in Texas, California, Thailand, and Japan. After an Honorable Discharge in 1975, I attended graduate School at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and graduated with a PhD in Chemistry. I then served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory performing chemical research with highly radioactive transuranium elements. I was later employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, California, and the U.S. Department of Energy, Washington, D.C. as a researcher and technical consultant mostly concerning fundamental chemical research and nuclear waste disposal and environmental concerns.

After twenty years, I retired and was later hired as a research professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Florida State University where I lectured, performed chemical research, and mentored PhD students. My FSU contract expired in July 2020 and I am presently keeping busy with technical writing, consulting, mentoring former students, and organizing international scientific conferences. For the most part, I attribute my prolific scientific legacy and rewarding forty-year career in heavy element chemistry to the educational foundation I received at Rollins College. To my fellow esteemed Class of 1971 celebrating our 50th Reunion, I wish you all prosperity and health in these most challenging of times.

Life Since Rollins: Since leaving Rollins, I have continued to play golf, albeit with a much higher handicap! I was married in 1975 which ended in 1992. I have three amazing children from this marriage - 2 girls and a boy who have all gone on to have successful lives and careers.

We divide our time between St. Simons and our home in Reynolds at Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga. I became a Federal police officer in 1977 and was employed as an instructor/manager at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Ga. Since 2004 after

I loved Rollins and the people from the first day I attended until I graduated in 1971.

I also loved the people at the Reunions through the years. I spent the days attending classes and working at the Rollins Admissions office. I took care of President and Mrs. Critchfield’s kids and helping Mrs. Critchfield with parties for 4 years. I spent time with friends at Daytona Beach almost every weekend. I helped President and Mrs. McKean at their waterfront home “Wind Song’’ on Lake Virginia. While at President and Mrs. McKean’s home I began my love for waterfront property. I loved that kind of life on the lake. I have used my Rollins degree in Fine Arts to help design buildings, offices, waterfront and land development for our company.

Semi-retired - I am Marketing VP and CFO for Construction Managers & Consultants, Inc. I married Tommy Starkey, President & CEO (he said he was a poor starving “general contractor” when we met?) and we built the company up and got into land development. We build part time now selling and erecting metal buildings and concrete warehouses, new building renovations, buying and rebuilding antique cars and trucks. Tommy and I also develop Memphis land, 15 waterfront lots, and property on Yellow Creek (the best part of Pickwick Lake). We love the waterfront property so we built our boat house. We have two spoiled kids, three spoiled grandkids, two rescue spoiled cats, and one really spoiled chocolate lab puppy.

Peggy Kinnaird (’72 / ’74) and I met during her freshman year orientation, married in 1974, and live in St. Pete Beach, FL. We have two (lovely and intelligent) daughters who live in Charlotte, NC. They have favored us with four equally wonderful grandchildren, who are the reason that we also have a home in NC. The summer of 1971 found me guarding America’s gold supply at Fort Knox as a cadet (steel helmet, M-16, pack of Camels et al.) in Army ROTC basic training. I continued in ROTC for the next year while half-heartedly pursuing a graduate degree in English Lit. at a Cleveland area college.

I worked on the equities trading desk at a mid-west brokerage firm for four long years, then on to Xerox Corporation in sales and sales management, based in the Cleveland office, for the next nine. It was an exciting time as embryonic technology from the Palo Alto Research Center was beginning to percolate through the company—things we now take for granted like laser printers,

Ethernet, GUI, bitmap graphics, PostScript/ PDF, the computer mouse. I learned a lot and had a great deal of fun.

Our two girls were born in Cleveland. In 1985 we moved to a growing Charlotte, NC, where I opened an office for a Silicon Valley computer start-up whose sales force was primarily ex-Xerox folk. As with many start-ups, there were some issues, and I left two years later to assume a greater role in my daughters’ lives (for better or worse... you’ll have to ask them—just don’t ask them about my cooking!), as Peggy’s time was being consumed by her fledgling graphic design business. I also began to run 10Ks competitively across the Carolinas and Florida. Living on a lake just south of the city, several of my friends and I would ski our slalom course several times a week on the early morning glass calm water.

During the late 80s, we competed in many SCCA and Porsche Club autocross events in a Guards Red 944 turbo. I didn’t have a lot of podium finishes but did manage to win one heat sliding backward over the finish line (for extra style points!). I’ve also attended a few open-wheel racing schools. Fellow Delta Chi/Guild brother, Sterling Hubbard (still an active SCCA racer), continues to suggest we head west to a Bondurant School and I’ve found a Rally driving school in Ocala that looks fun...stay tuned for our GoPro videos!

In 1990 or so, I joined Peggy in her design business. We managed to secure the commercial real estate division of Duke Energy as our first major client and leveraged that and the explosive growth of the Charlotte area into the business we enjoyed for the next 20 years, which provided marketing support to the real estate industry (both commercial and residential) throughout the southeast. I am the business development guy and she is the creative genius. In the past several years

Lesson you learned as a student that you still value today: I have often tried to explain how Rollins absolutely set me on the path to be very successful in life. It allowed me to grow in independence while it made me part of the whole. It gave me responsibility outside the classroom. It taught me to be a good follower & worker, but better yet, to be a good leader. It was my family, then Rollins changing that 17 year old small town girl into a confident young lady knowing she had the ability to take on any task ahead.

Life Since Rollins: Not long after graduation I was on my way to head up the water skiing for Mickey Mouse. After several wonderful years I had an unfortunate work injury ending my skiing. I then entered Corporate America as an Insurance Claims Adjuster. I loved it from 1974–1999. The last 20 years of that was with CNA. I worked various positions, various states and retired as Vice President of Risk Management Claims. I then opened Sip & Knit, a local yarn shop in Winter Park, Fla. I had my brick & mortar shop for 18 years. I have now moved back to the Columbus, Ohio area to be with family.
