Masks and Mirrors:
Reflections of
Femininity in Photography
June 7 – August 31, 2025

In her 1992 self-portrait Me:Me, British artist Gillian Wearing explores what has been described as “the public masquerade of femininity”—implying that we are always performing our gender for others as well as for ourselves.
In our fast-paced age of social media, pervasive double standards of what is “feminine,” alongside accepted behaviors and perceptions of beauty, mar our daily lives. This exhibition presents a selection of works from the museum’s permanent collection that spotlights the interaction of gender and technology, from the early use of photography to the dawn of the Internet. Masks and Mirrors is curated by Stella Morris ‘26, Fred W. Hicks Curatorial Fellow.

Movement: A New Approach to the Bloomsbury Group
June 7 – August 31, 2025

“On or about December 1910, human character changed.” Here, Virginia Woolf, with characteristic humor, refers to the pivotal moment when artist and critic Roger Fry staggered London with his two Post-Impressionist exhibitions, marking the international development of modernism. Painters, novelists, and critics associated with Fry pioneered a distinctive visual style and a shift in cultural and societal attitudes; they were known as the Bloomsbury Group.
At its core, Bloomsbury was a conversation— an artistic and intellectual dialogue that blurred the boundaries between painting and literature, criticism and creation. The Rollins Museum of Art holds an extensive collection of works by members of this collective, including Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant, and Walter Richard Sickert. RMA debuts a recently acquired portrait of Vanessa Bell by Roger Fry with this exhibition, which foregrounds the group’s dynamic dialogue with European modernism and one another.

Art Spaces / Vital Places
June 7 – August 31, 2025

Artists have long been captivated by the environments where art is animated— studios, galleries, museums, and theaters— depicting them not just as physical settings but as dynamic spaces infused with personal and collective meaning. This exhibition delves into that vivacity, highlighting a diverse array of paintings, prints, and photographs from the museum’s collection. It also asks viewers to consider their role in invigorating these spaces.
As Rollins Museum of Art takes the next step toward a new home, its evolving role within the community comes into focus. By considering what makes an art space vital, we uncover how these spaces shift and adapt, shaped by the needs, voices, and creative energy of the communities they serve.

What’s New? Recent Acquisitions
June 7 – August 31, 2025

The collection of the Rollins Museum of Art is constantly expanding. Generous gifts and strategic purchases enrich and diversify our holdings, offering opportunities to engage with unique works of art. This installation features recent acquisitions on a rotating basis, allowing us to share with our visitors some of our new treasures soon after they become part of the museum’s collection. The selection reflects the museum’s sustained commitment to acquiring works in various media, from different periods, and by artists of diverse backgrounds, in alignment with our teaching mission and the curriculum of a liberal arts education. You may see some of these objects in context as part of themed exhibitions in the future. This rotation includes works by Paul S. Briggs, Rodrigo Facundo, Carlos Osorio, and Patricia Treib, among others.

Land
June 7 – August 31, 2025

In Sacred Land, American photographer Ralph Gibson, and producer Martin Cohen, have created a unique photographic exhibition and publication that captures the soul of Israel, both ancient and contemporary. The photographs convey the fundamental humanity and underlying affinities that connect all who deem this land as sacred, and express aspirations for mutual understanding and peace. At a time when the war and suffering in Israel and Gaza overwhelm us, Gibson’s images offer a compelling and hopeful outlook for the future.
Sacred Land invites us into the eye of the photographer as a first-time visitor to Israel – we see what he sees, what captures his attention. It is in the details, a particular gesture, a candid pose, a fragment, a moment, that we glimpse a deeper meaning. The essence of the images is their intimacy; we are drawn close to people, places, things, the instantaneous and the eternal. Their juxtaposition reveals the convergence of antiquity and modernity.
This exhibition is organized by the Dr. Bernard Heller Museum at Hebrew Union College.
