Vision 08 Development of the Swiss Club of Victoria Logo The Club is entering a new chapter with a new tenant downstairs. It brings new people and new life to the Club. The Restaurant looks great inside. On the outside, more work will be done. One of the main additions is a fries overhanging an outdoor sitting area. One of the things which needs to be looked at, is the building signage. In the light of this, the Committee sat down and looked at ways to contemporise the Swiss Club Logo. The Swiss Club V has been rejuvenated by adding graduation within the colour red. This added light effect lets the V appear as an enamel plaque and gives the impression of dimension. To enhance this effect a drop shadow was added. The Swiss Club V can be used on its own but also in conjunction with several type combinations. The Swiss Club V

on its own and with any type combination should always be applied on white with a defined clear space area around it. The typeface chosen, although a classic, is Helvetica. Helvetica is in the world of design a Swiss contribution of the magnitude of the invention of the Swiss Army knife. The ‘of Victoria’ is applied in red to further enhance our Victorian heritage. Overall, the Swiss Club Logo is very flexible for a wide raft of applications such as building signs, club stationary, event graphics, merchandise items such as pins, T-shirts, mugs etc. The Committee feels that the logo/type combinations set the right signs going forward. It’s contemporary and yet is not a departure from where we’ve been 25 years ago. Patrick Rychner

The Atlas Project - the quest to understanding the universe With the world’s largest particle accelerator – the ‘Large Hadron Collider’ (LHC) based at CERN, the European Centre for Particle Physics Research in Geneva – Switzerland is at the cutting edge of scientific research. The following is a transcript of the SBS program ‘Dateline’, presented on 15 August 2007 by George Negus. Reporter is Aaron Lewis.

The ‘God Particle’

Senior Members’ Luncheon

Humankind’s seemingly unquenchable thirst for greater understanding of the universe over the years has led to all sorts of things, the moon landing, the race to explore the outer reaches of space, et cetera, et cetera. But what if the answers to our deepest queries were actually to be found right here on earth or even under it. As we speak, a hundred metres below the mountains of Switzerland and France a gigantic and quite mind-boggling experiment is under construction to resolve one of the great unanswered questions of science. What gives matter its mass? The sort of thing you ask yourself several times a day I’m sure. Seriously, by generating conditions similar to those that existed moments after the Big Bang a

horde of some of the world’s smartest scientists are hoping to locate what some scribes have called the ‘God Particle’ and through it, understand how the universe was born. Aaron Lewis visited Switzerland to see if they could explain the so called ‘God Particle’ concept in words of no more than say three syllables. Continued on page 4
