SEPTEMBER 2015

Swiss National Day Festival at the Club

This year, Swiss National Day fell on a Saturday. What a great opportunity to have our club open from morning till late. The Committee, with the help of some dedicated members and volunteers, put together a Swiss National Day Festival in and around the Swiss Club to ensure that Flinders Lane was humming with Swissness on Switzerland’s special day. The event opened with Alphorn sounds reverberating in Duckboard Place, followed by delicious smells of sausages wafting through the lane and sounds of modern Swiss music entertaining through the day. There were activities for kids such as having an opportunity of being Wilhelm Tell in our own ‘hollow alley’ (Duckboard Place) and shooting an apple of Walter’s head. The steady stream of visitors were encouraged to climb the proverbial mountain to the Second Floor where a Swiss arts & craft exhibition was waiting to be discovered. The exhibit showcased a beautiful selection of ‘Trachten’, traditional dresses and accessories from various regions of Switzerland, from the collection of Sylvia Hochuli (read more about it on page 6), as well as some fine original examples of Hans Erni’s illustrations in form of his famous Knie Posters and an original Erni pencil drawing of a Pegasus, one of his signature motives. One area of the exhibition was dedicated to HR Giger and his work. Continued page 5
