Electrical firm’s bright spark CTS Electrical Services invested in 18-year-old apprentice Matthew Sloan from Wroughton in July 2013 and he is now key to local projects such as the wiring of the new Olive Tree Cafe extension at Manor Garden Centre.

Owner of CTS Darren Crannis decided to take on Matthew after he had written to the company the year before asking if there were any openings for an apprentice.

At the time Darren predominantly used contractors, but when work picked up Darren gave Matthew a call.

Darren said: “When our work programme expanded it seemed perfect timing to invest in young new talent. It’s difficult to find good electrical contractors and reliable staff, so I decided to train Matthew myself.

Link magazine gives welcome boost to volunteer numbers SWINDON Circles, a project which aims to prevent seniors becoming isolated in their neighbourhoods and needing high levels of care, is appealing for more volunteers.

Launched in the summer by Swindon Council, Swindon Circles now has 50 volunteers offering friendship and support to older people - and most of them read about it in Link Magazine says project manager Paula Harrison.

Alvin Shin, the first volunteer to be matched has been visiting Richard over the last few months. He said: ”Richard is a lovely man, it is a pleasure to spend time with him.”

Together they go to local activities such as bingo. Richard’s daughter Sheila said she’s really enjoyed seeing her dad taking part. “I visit Dad daily but it’s great to know that he has someone else he can talk to and who can help him take part in things he likes to do.

“Alvin’s volunteering has made a big difference to all of us.”

Paula believes the flexibility of the scheme is part of its success.

“We’ve been delighted by the level of interest in volunteering for older people,” she said. “Some amazing people of all ages and backgrounds have come forward. They are volunteering as a couple or a family, some give time every week whilst others are taking part as and when they can.

“Swindon Circles wraps around the busy lives of our volunteers and we spend time making careful matches with older people who would like to receive visits. I’m hopeful that we will be able to match over 100 people with volunteers over the next six months.”

SWINDON Cares, the business organisation that raises money for good causes presented the Alzheimer’s Society and Swindon Carers Centre with cheques for £7,328 each in late October.

Each charity received similar amounts in 2013 as Swindon Cares makes a two year fundraising commitment. The network of business men and women come from Arval, Zurich, Bluefin, Nationwide, BBC Wiltshire, Swindon Borough Council, The Pear Tree at Purton, De Vere Venues, Arkells Brewery, Excalibur Business IT Solutions, Swindon Advertiser, the Rotary Clubs in Swindon and GWE Business West. Over £215,000 has been raised to support a range of charitable, community and voluntary organisations in the town since 2003.

Money was raised annually via corporate golf days, football tournaments, inter-company quiz nights, scrabble tournaments and school dress-down days, as well the High Sheriff of Wiltshire’s concert.

Swindon Carers Centre provides specialist help, advice and information to adults and children who care for others and the Alzheimer’s Society has used the donation to help run a variety of groups, including Singing for the Brain, see below.

Swindon Carers chief executive Cath Johnstone said: “We would

like to express our wholehearted thanks for the donation. There might be a bit of confusion of names but there’s no doubt that Swindon Cares really do care for Swindon people who need that extra help. The money donated to Swindon Carers has helped us run groups which would have been difficult to fund otherwise.”

WITH funding from Swindon Cares the Alzheimer’s Society is now able to launch a second Singing for the Brain group on 5 January.

Based around the principles of music therapy, Singing for the Brain encourages people in the early to moderate stage of dementia, and their carers to communicate and participate through shared memory of songs.

Each session includes a range of activities including vocal warm-up and singing a variety of familiar and new songs, and there is time to catch up with others over tea and biscuits.

The Swindon branch of the society also runs the Wyvern Memory Café which take place in the theatre on the second Thursday of each month.

It provides the opportunity for people with dementia, their carers and family members to informally meet and talk and ask questions of professionals who attend.

Once a month people the branch hold Meet & Eat, with a fish and chip lunch followed by entertainment.

The branch runs a Carer’s Information and Support Programme (CrISP) to provide education and support to carers which has received very positive feedback.

The Alzheimer’s Society offers a one-to-one support service for people with dementia and their carers enable them to live well at home and in their community.

There are thought to be over 2,000 people with dementia living in Swindon and surrounding areas and the number is set to grow as the population ages.

The Alzheimer’s Society organises community activities with voluntary income, donations, fundraising and corporate partnership with companies like Zurich.

All group activities are free to people with dementia, their carers and family members who need support. However there is a charge for tea and the fish and chip lunch.

Reader sheds stones after spotting advert in our mag JUST over a year ago 26 year old Jess Powell from Haydon Wick picked up the December edition of The Link and found an advertisement for Slimming World.

One casual flick through the mag would lead to transforming her life.

Her journey started in mid-2013 when her boyfriend’s nan asked if she had put on weight.

Jess said: “I’ve always been on the large size, but I was mortified by the comment and started thinking about what to do. After Christmas last year I decided 2014 was when I would make life changes. I’m an avid reader of Link magazine and when Paula Bolt invited me to come along to her group at Abbey Meads Primary School, the time seemed just right for me to make changes.”

Eleven months later, having shed two and a half stones, Jess, who works at New College, was invited to tell her story and be featured on the cover of the national Slimming World magazine.

The Link met with Jess to find out more about her story and how she achieved her goals.

LINK: How does Slimming World work?

JP: Slimming World is a weight loss plan. It’s a healthy eating way of life and definitely not a diet.

Nothing is prohibited and you can still enjoy all your favourite meals.

There is an element of exercise known as Body Magic. Rather than expecting you to become a ‘gym bunny’ it’s more about making lasting changes to your life taking the stairs instead of the lift etc. Exercise is encouraged as it speeds up the weight loss.

LINK: Have you made new lifestyle choices as a result of joining Slimming World?

JP: I’m now much more aware of what I eat and ensure that I make healthy choices with all my meals. I’ve learnt how to cook from scratch to make healthy, filling meals.

LINK: How tough was it to lose the weight?

Staying to group sessions and talking things through always helped. If I had a gain or not lost as much as I’d hoped, the support and encouragement from the other members really gave me the boost I needed for the week ahead. Once I reached my first target of 10st 5lbs (2 stone loss), I lowered my target to 10st. The last 5lbs were tough to lose but the support from my group and consultant was great.

THE next West Swindon Forum takes place on Monday 12 January, 6.30pm for 7pm, at Link Centre Library.

The forum provides residents with an opportunity to discuss community issues with the nine councillors representing the three wards in the locality.

Swindon Council’s proposal to turn part of Mead Way into a dual carriageway might be discussed.

THE management committee at Freshbrook Community Centre is desperate to recruit somebody to oversee the accounts for the charity which currently manages community buildings at Freshbrook village centre and Peatmoor.

AROUND 40 residents attended the resurrected Redhouse Residents’ Association on 20 November - the first gathering in nine months.

Organised and chaired by Cllr Vera Tomlinson, pictured, the meeting featured discussions about schools, local policing, planning applications and highways, with cabinet member for transport Cllr Dale Heenan in attendance.

Residents expressed concern about dangerous parking in the area, particularly next to Isambard School and along Redhouse Way. They repeatedly stressed the need for a strategic view to solve the issues and Cllr Heenan attempted to reassure people that he intends to take a different approach, including tackling the problematic Redhouse Way as a priority.

Borough area planning manager Andy Brown displayed images of the proposed retail and commercial building opposite Tesco at Redhouse Village Centre, prompting dismay about the impact on parking in

the area.

Northern Expansion beat manager PC Mark Simpson outlined 39 logs of anti-social and criminal activity in the area in the previous month, and appealed for residents to pass as much information to the policing team as possible via the new community messaging service at wiltsmessaging.co.uk Education planning manager Gareth Cheal responded to questions about construction at Tadpole Farm School, which is set to open in July this year.

North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson commented on the proposed new free school, sponsored by New College, which would alleviate the pressure for additional secondary school places. A decision is expected early in the new year, and the school is likely to be situated close to Abbey Stadium.

Cllr Tomlinson also appealed for people to join the association’s committee.

The next meeting is scheduled for 29 January, 7pm, at Brimble Hill School.

In this case you must have paid Income or Capital Gains Tax of at least £125 or the consequence will be that HMRC ask you to pay some of the income tax that the charities have claimed back. They require receptionists and information guides/gateway assessors to welcome visitors and help them use the new information point situated in Sanford House in the town centre, which has been set up to give advice and information on adult health, wellbeing and social care.

They also need people to carry out these roles at the Citizens Advice Bureau accessed via the College Street entrance of Sanford House, which deals with debt, benefits, housing, employment, immigration, legal and consumer issues.

If you are an outgoing person, a good listener, open minded and non-judgmental team worker, and could commit to around 10 hours per week, then this could be for you.

Think Foodbank in 2015: Your support will make a difference 2014 WAS a busy year for Swindon Foodbank. Having given out 6,500 food parcels in 2013 - 65 tonnes of food - the team wondered how the year would measure up. The exact stats for 2014 are not available yet, but while demand did not slow, the charity has seen a levelling off of the steep growth seen in previous years.

Demand for 2015 is uncertain, with the Government’s benefits reform Universal Credit being rolled out in Swindon next month.

Last year saw a change of management at Foodbank, with the promotion of Andrew Hill to project manager. Norma Bates joined as office coordinator and Amy Bracey is the new assistant project manager. Swindon Foodbank also saw their distribution network grow, expanding from three outlets to six, now including Highworth, Freshbrook and Rodbourne Cheney.

The intention is to find a group of committed volunteers, who have suitable premises to start up another centre in Royal Wootton Bassett. This move is not related to increased demand, but a desire

to make the food available closer to where their clients live. Many do not have their own transport or the bus fare to collect supplies for several days in one trip.

In December the charity received a welcome donation, a second van.

West Swindon-based company Imagine Cruising donated a new van with the support of Fish Bros Peugeot Project manager Andrew Hill said: “We would like to thank the team at Imagine Cruising from the bottom of our hearts. The van is being used daily to pick up food donations and for distribution.

“I would also like to thank GWP Packaging for their continued support - without this assistance from the business community, we couldn’t do what we do.”

Swindon Food Bank is appealing for continued support from corporates as well as individuals.

Isambard are record breakers YOUNGSTERS at Isambard Community School in North Swindon collected just under a tonne of food for Swindon Foodbank during harvest festival in October last year, the highest ever amount from a single source since the charity was established in 2005.

To top it off, students gave up a Sunday on 7 December to pack bags for Asda Walmart customers at Orbital Shopping Park, which raised £1,030. They also collected another half a tonne of food.

Project manager Andrew Hill said: “The support of Isambard students and staff has been amazing. We came along with our van thinking a single trip back to the warehouse would be adequate, but there was so much that we

had to make a second run.”

Caitlin Packer, Year 10 member of the organising group, said: “It’s a surprise that we’ve done so well. It makes me really proud of Isambard.”

Year 8 student Dan Hunt, who helped collect the food at Asda, added: “It feels really good to be a record breaker. Foodbank is a really important charity to support.”

Isambard project coordinator Jacky Miller said the harvest festival collection involved the whole school and 30 students assisted at the Sunday collection.

She added: “The students have been absolutely brilliant and our thanks have to go to parents and the public at Asda Walmart who were overwhelmingly generous in helping Foodbank.”

Art marks school’s tenth year A NEW mural at St Francis Primary School depicting the life of the school’s patron saint has been unveiled in the tenth year since it opened.

Retired headteacher Steve Hobbs worked with children in Years 4 and 5 to research the story of St Francis and his relationship with the creatures on earth.

They also looked at the kinds of houses in Taw Hill which are all incorporated in the mural.

Built of wood and ceramics and mounted by the school entrance, 60 youngsters had a hand in making the 60 pieces that were fired to stoneware temperature for outdoor display in the kiln at Goddard Park

Year 6 pupil Charlie said: “It was a lot of fun working out how to make the mural.

For the first time in his annual report on the state of education in England, head of Ofsted Sir Michael Wilshaw has named specific schools worthy of recognition for their effort to do better.

LPA principal Clive Zimmerman admitted a sense of trepidation when told that there was a call for him from the cabinet office on 8 December. He said: “On this occasion it was a very nice conversation, asking if I had any objection to the academy being included in Sir Michael’s report.

Needless to say, my response was one of pleasure.

“To be identified in such positive terms is a tremendous boost for our hardworking and talented staff after a very demanding but successful year. It’s also a recognition of the extremely positive work ethic that we have fostered in our student body and it reinforces the positive message to our community that Lydiard Park Academy is an Ofsted rated good school.“

Royal opening for UTC HRH the Duke of York visited the town on 11 December to unveil a commemorative plaque to officially open UTC Swindon.

In an address to those gathered, he said: “If we want to grow the companies in this country, the most important thing is providing the skills they need. I’m led to believe that this is holding us back. If we can provide you (UTC students) with these skills, our economy will be vibrant.”

THE report raised concerns about some of the school’s internal financial processes which the current senior leadership team are working hard to address.

We are working closely with the council’s finance team who have provided bespoke training for the leadership team and the full governing body.

This has ensured that all governors, particularly those on the asset management committee, are equipped to support and challenge the school, as appropriate, on its financial policy and procedures.

The council’s finance team have verified that the school is on track to rectify the issues highlighted within the audit findings.

Our new business manager Robert Shorter, has been in post since June 2014.

His financial background includes working for a multi-national company and his wealth of experience will ensure that the school succeeds in putting right its

areas for development.

No issues highlighted within the council’s report inferred that the quality of education for students has suffered.

Many changes have taken place at Isambard since September last year. These include the introduction of form tutoring to support care and guidance to encourage student voice.

The introduction of a ‘behaviour for learning’ system ensures that students behave appropriately in the classroom resulting in disruptionfree teaching and improved student progress.

Students at Isambard are now taught at Key Stage 3 for 3 years and Key Stage 4 (GCSE) for 2 years in order to foster deeper learning.

YOU are never too old to learn, so the adage goes, and Swindon Library Service is doing all it can to ensure seniors are not being left behind in the surge into the digital age.

With Government and the corporate sector slashing costs by reducing face to face services in preference to making available online, recent research by the BBC shows that over 20 per cent of the population lack the basic digital skills and capabilities required to realise the benefits of the internet.

Libraries are at the forefront of bridging this gap by running regular courses with a high tutor-to-pupil ratio so that people new to emailing and surfing can receive personal attention.

Their Facebook page says the group is for people interested in ‘making, breaking, and fixing things.

Heritage Lottery Fund backs Great War media project A £34,000 Heritage Lottery grant to Create Studios, Swindon is funding a project to enable young people to explore a unique archive of letters written by soldiers from

the town taken prisoner in the Great War. They are also researching the story of Mary Slade, who mobilised the town’s community

to respond to the needs of the men incarcerated for up to four years a century ago.

Working with local artists and film maker Gurchetan Singh, their

efforts will be seen in an exhibition which will tour the town during the second half of 2015.

Remembrance of life in a community YOUNGSTERS at Brook Field Primary School in Shaw made a special study of World War One last term by looking closely at the village of nearby Lydiard Millicent.

They received help from retired teacher Carolyn Savory, who had been asked by Lydiard Millicent Parish Council to research and illustrate the 100 men from the village who went to war. Sixteen did not return.

Children studied old photographs and biographies of the soldiers written by Carolyn, and looked at her 3D map of the village to locate where each of them lived.

RIDGEWAY School student Sana Mahmood from Shaw is planning an adventure in 2016 and is hoping readers will support her project.

Currently Sana is in Year 10 but at the end of her GCSE studies in 18 months she wants to undertake voluntary work in Peru with Camps International. She needs to raise £3,800 to make the month long trip.

North primary head retires FOLLOWING 36 years in the teaching profession Laura Brierley has departed Catherine Wayte Primary School, Abbey Meads.

During eight years as head she saw the school increase from 320 pupils to a capacity of 420. In 2010 Ofsted awarded an outstanding grade following an inspection.

“Our vision which informed the Ofsted report is ‘many working together, striving for the best’,” said Mrs Brierley.

“Success cannot be achieved by one person. Catherine Wayte Primary School is all about our team, every member of staff and governors, the children and parents, all contributing to how we can improve.

“I spent 23 years as a classroom teacher, starting at Pinehurst, then becoming deputy head at Penhill and Lyneham, before a headship at Earl Danby’s Brinkworth.

“I was inspired by John Thomas, my head at Pinehurst. It’s where I learnt to understand children in relation to their environment.

It’s been my mission to pass on that legacy and I’m delighted the governors appointed my deputy Emma Brown to take the school forward.”

Commenting on the state of education today, Ms Brierley endorsed the profound changes that have taken place during her career.

“The quality of teaching and the work children are doing now is much better than when I started out,” she said.

The end of term was particularly emotional for everybody at Catherine Wayte.

Mrs Brierley was presented with an album of pictures taken during her career, an iPad Mini and a quilt with pictures drawn by every child, coordinated by teacher Helen Wheeler. A donation of £253 to the link school in Burkina Faso was also made.

At a special assembly, children talked about their headteacher’s kindness, generosity and truthfulness.

Mrs Brierley said she felt chair of governors David Cassidy’s use of the word ‘integrity’ summarised her contribution.

Mrs Brierley will be spending more time with her elderly parents and taking holidays with her semiretired husband.

She will also be offering her outstanding leadership skills to help other schools improve.

The charity supports families where a parent has been killed during military service. Her father, Flight Sergeant Mark Gibson, died when the Hercules he was on was shot

down in Iraq in 2005.

“The trust is so important to families, there are many events for children to take part in,” said Poppy. “I wanted to honour my father by running for the charity. I had so many lovely messages from people who served with him. I’m so proud of dad; he obviously meant so much to many people beyond our family.” n The Forces Children’s Trust received a Sun newspaper Military Award ‘Millie’ in December.

Help a child build up a positive bank of memories THE brain is like a bank account which stores away experiences, and nostalgic memories are an important part of what makes us human.

A groundbreaking project Memory Makers - links children aged 10 to 12 with adult volunteers to make memories to put into that bank account, there to be drawn upon when needed.

According to group co-founder Lyn Hartman, there isn’t another similar project in Britain. She said: “A happy childhood is taken for granted, but for some it can be a time of stress. Perhaps a child doesn’t get enough attention because of family breakdown, or there is instability at home which causes anxiety, or he or she might be left out at school because he or she isn’t confident or feels a failure.”

Volunteers and children meet regularly to enjoy inexpensive activities such as going on a walk around Coate Water, a game of football, flying a kite, playing board games or doing crafts. It could mean going to the Wyvern Theatre or Roves Farm for a treat.

Memory Maker volunteers Jackie Evans and Stuart Westley Swindon with his fiancé. He said: “I was looking for an excuse to be a kid again once a week. We went to the park recently and my child invented a game looking for bird boxes; we just chatted as we went along. We’ve been to crazy golf, went to a Chinese restaurant to try different foods and we’ve started writing a story together.

“As our friendship is on a voluntary basis, which has been agreed by a parent, I don’t have an official role, what we do is on his terms. He feels comfortable and does not need to try to act older than he is.”

Jackie Evans, 63, read the story about Memory Makers in the June Link, just as she was retiring from teaching. She said: “I don’t have grandchildren yet and with my experience I thought I could be a Memory Maker.

“But it’s a very different role to being a primary school teacher; the preparation course was the most interesting training on keeping children safe that I’ve ever had.

“We do what the child wants to do and I suggest things we could try together. We went to a craft session at Studley Grange recently and she had to encourage me to get my hands sticky.

“We just chat a lot about everyday things; it’s all about listening and building a positive self-image.”

Memory Makers Programme Coordinator, Clare Armagan said: “We believe that happy memories are crucial in psychological and emotional growth. Remembering good times can help cushion children from the challenges they face every day, and, crucially, may give them hope for the future.

“Anybody can be a Memory Maker.

In our first group of volunteers we have men and women ranging from 18 years old to the retired; some are experienced with children, others have had little contact.

“Volunteers come from all walks of life. The children involved with the Memory Makers programme are so different from each other, so we need a broad range of people to match them with.

“The most important thing that can be offered is time and a willingness to put the child at the centre of the relationship - plus the ability to have lots of fun.”

The next Memory Makers training course takes place in late February.

Pre-school on right track HAYDON Meadow Pre-School owner Debbie Waldron would like to thank all the parents who have stuck by her and her staff through a difficult time after an Ofsted inspector erroneously reported that a child had gone missing in May. The local media picked up on the point before it was removed

by Ofsted after an appeal, but the damage to staff morale was considerable.

Debbie said: “It was a difficult period after the first inspection on 2 May which required a lot of work to keep staff remembering the positives and to ignore the coverage which we knew was incorrect.

“The staff have been great and the parents have been wonderful; they believed in us and all our places are

taken until September.”

The follow-up inspection on 17 October rated the pre-school as good, commenting children are well prepared for school as staff provide a wide range of interesting opportunities and activities to promote their future learning. It added: ‘Staff now have a good understanding of how to keep children safe and the quality of teaching is good,’ and ‘Staff work well with parents. They keep them well informed about their children's progress and wellbeing.’

Debbie said: “The recent report more accurately reflects what we are trying to achieve at Haydon Meadow Pre-School.”

Top marks for Freshbrook Kumon student UMAR Ali, who signed up for the Kumon out-of-school maths programme when he was eight, has achieved Level L - the highest possible.

He progressed from basic counting to calculus, algebra and beyond - all without the use of a calculator.

Each level of the maths programme builds incrementally on the skills developed in the previous level, ensuring a solid understanding and the ability to put learning into practice.

Mayumi Lewis, right, who runs the Swindon West study centre, said Umar is one of only 20 students who have reached Level L in her 30 years as a Kumon Instructor.

me. Umar has learnt tremendous discipline which overflows into everything he does.”

Umar, 16, who is now in his last year at Bradon Forest School, gained an A in GCSE Maths in Year 10. He said: “It was a lot of hard work to fit in other studies and playing football for Shaw FC and now Highworth Under 16s.

Sam turns back on number crunching to bag fitness award SAM James used to crunch numbers for a living but now she crunches abs and helps people get active.

The 34-year-old accounting specialist, turned gym and Zumba instructor, has just won a national award for her hard work in supporting adults with special needs back on the road to fitness.

Sam’s achievement is all the more remarkable as cerebral palsy means she has reduced mobility in her right leg and little control of her left arm.

The What’s On 4 Me awards celebrate successes of adult activity providers in the UK and members of the public were asked to vote online to help determine the winners.

Sam’s change from working with figures to fitness started little more than a year ago, having been made redundant from her job in finance.

“I struggled to find work and ended up working part-time as a receptionist for a while. That gave me time to think about what I really wanted to do,” she said.

“I had always loved going to Zumba classes and was passionate about fitness. So I trained to be a gym instructor and qualified to work with disabled people. This led to a three-month work placement at the Link Centre and I started volunteering. Then some paid hours came up, so I jumped at the chance and haven’t looked back.”

Sam has now set up her own business as a fitness instructor, taking Zumba and aqua Zumba classes, as well as helping people rehabilitate and get back in the swing of exercise.

Animals galore at Tregoze primary YEAR 5 pupil Keira Buckley is so besotted with bulldogs that she set out to raise £100 for the Bulldog Rescue Trust by having her hair cut off.

In fact she raised an amazing £1,052 for the trust, and her hair was sent to the Little Princess Trust which creates wigs for children who lose theirs to cancer or skin disease.

“Some people

think bulldogs are ugly but I love them, especially my own who is called Luna,” said Keira. “It was lovely so many people sponsored me to have my hair cut off. I wanted to help another child who needs it.”

Swindon recycling project in plea for outdated computers SWINDON Scrapstore, the environmental charity that diverts donated office equipment and furniture, manufacturing offcuts, surplus and decorative items from landfill for re-use within the community, is expanding by launching Project Reboot.

The idea is giving long-term unemployed people skills training to refurbish end-of-life computers, laptops, working monitors and peripherals to sell on at the lowest possible cost to community groups, low income families and members of the general public who are unable to afford new kit.

With the skills and confidence gained from being part of the project, the trainees will be in a better position to secure paid employment.

Reboot will collect equipment and provide a WEEE regulated Waste Transfer Note. The project is managed by experienced IT professional Nigel Tombs who will guarantee company data security requirements by implementating data removal using industry standard sanitisation methods, free of charge, and will provide certificated results.

In the latest in his series of car reviews for Link, GEOFF MAXTED of DriveWrite brings you his family car of the year INTRODUCING the Peugeot 3008. Apologies everybody for the state of the car in our images but with this mucky weather we’ve been having, what are you going to do?

Apologies also for the paint which Peugeot describe as ‘Rich Oak’ but to we mere mortals is really just brown. Otherwise this brilliant family car comes in eight other colours, all of them nicer, frankly.

The 3008 featured is in near range-topping ‘Allure’ trim.

The car costs £22,445 but it all depends on how much you dip into the options list. Our version comes with part leather, navigation, climate, cruise, Bluetooth, heads-up display and the now expected connectivity, but there are more important attributes.

Power is derived from an excellent 1.6L 1560cc HDI diesel.

The rather pedestrian time of 13.6 seconds to 62mph belies the fact this engine is lively and responsive. Over 50mpg is almost guaranteed for steady drivers although emissions of 127g/km are a tad disappointing. Never mind, there are other eco-diesel models in the 3008 range that can do better and a choice of petrol engines available.

It’s family motoring where this car really scores. On the road, it is really comfortable with seats and suspension that make driving a pleasure. In addition to the usual

safety equipment there is also the option of Grip Control.

In a nutshell, this operates in conjunction with the vehicle’s ESP to maintain the best possible traction from both front wheels under variable conditions; snow and mud for example. It’s not as good as full blown four-wheel drive but it is a valuable safety option that actually works.

Another plus point is a versatile and absolutely massive boot. The hatchback lifts the parcel shelf to reveal a smaller space with room for shopping and short-break luggage. Remove the false floor and (surprise, surprise) drop the rear tailgate and there before you is an enormous additional space.

It’s like Kent’s Cavern in there. It is also a good shape and the rear seats split for odd shaped loads and the like. A real plus-point.

There are cubbies and storage areas in the cabin and - a nice touch this - built in window blinds on the rear doors to shade the light for tiny passengers. A panoramic roof with a sliding blind is on offer that, combined with the low sills, helps to make the interior a light and airy place to be. Sadly there is no space for me to go on singing this car’s praises. If a new one is too rich for your budget then the Peugeot 3008 has been around since 2009 and was much refreshed in 2013, meaning that there are good used examples around. Connecting the past to the present A NEW book - Shadow of the Workhouse - has turned the clock back 100 years to look at how Britain’s social security system worked in the past.

Local historians Caroline Ockwell and Graham Carter of the Alfred Williams Heritage Society have written in-depth about the Swindon and Highworth Union Workhouse, which once stood in Highworth Road, Stratton St Margaret, until it was demolished in the 1970s.

Graham, who also edits Swindon Heritage magazine, said: “The South Marston-born poet and author Williams, visited the workhouse in 1911/12 and wrote about it in his book, A Wiltshire Village. He gave us such a vivid description of the workhouse and the inmates in the infirmary that we decided to find out more and update the story.

“The book was paid for by a Heritage Lottery Fund through its All Our Stories project, so we asked local people with connections to the workhouse, its successor Elm Court, or Stratton hospital – to come forward with their stories.”

Prospect sets pace for 2015 PROSPECT Hospice is calling for runners and walkers to sign up for two very different events at the start of 2015.

The third Prospect Hospice 10k cross-country run takes place on 22 February. Past events have attracted a good number of runners who see it as way of testing themselves for the new season, as well as those who want to raise much-needed money for the Wroughton-based charity.

“We have been delighted at how popular our 10k event has become in just two years,” said organiser Mike Kennedy. “The all terrain route is definitely a challenge. If previous years are anything to go by, you can be sure there will be mud, which is part of the fun. We really hope people will see this as a way of shaking off the winter cobwebs.”

Using salvaged wood from the 300-year-old walnut tree in Lydiard Park which perished in the winter storms of 2013, he was commissioned by Swindon Council to create a highly desirable heavy duty pen.

Because of the wood grain, each pen is absolutely unique. Simon has turned, sanded and applied 20 coats of clear acrylic to give them a 'dipped in glass' look.

2015 MARKS 30 years since the vision of Thamesdown Council to create a huge new leisure centre in West Swindon came to fruition.

We’ve delved into the archives to show the farmer’s fields before they were consumed

by Link Centre and Shaw Ridge Leisure Park.

Dressability models wow shoppers SWINDON charity Dressability, which adapts clothing for children and adults with disabilities, held a pre-Christmas fashion show and awareness day at Sainsbury’s Bridgemead, West Swindon.

Sainsbury's provided the garments which were altered by Dressability dressmakers and modelled by children from Swindon Down’s Syndrome Group and clients of the charity.

Dentist needs help to send caravan to Ukraine BRENDON Ball, who runs the Freshbrook dental surgery, is planning another trip to Ukraine in the Spring, but needs a large indoor space for three months where he can make final preparations.

Brendon has been involved with the country since reading about the dire state of dental services in Ukraine in the August 1997 Link.

Since then he has made 8 trips to deliver medical supplies and provide training in modern methods. He has also converted and delivered two mobile units to the Cherkassy region so that dentistry can be offered to poor people in remote areas.

He has another clinic almost ready to tow to Ukraine, but he’s looking for an indoor space with an electrical supply where he can complete the refurbishment.

Brendon said: “Because of the largely unreported war waged

by Russian backed forces in the

country the price of medicines has rocketed and health services are struggling to sustain the improvements achieved since I first started going there. Even the simplest pain killers like paracetamol are too expensive for the majority of people who have seen their standard of living drop through the floor.

“Our long standing friend Dr Ivan Kovolenko, the director of dental services in Cherkassy, is desperate for the help we can bring them. I hope to set off in April to deliver the mobile clinic - if we can complete the conversion by then.”

Keeping hearing aid wearers in the loop JUST over a third of chemists in Swindon have a working hearing loop – that’s the findings of an audit conducted in the town by hearing aid wearers.

Let’s Loop Swindon, a partnership between Rotary and the hearing loss charity Hearing Link, successfully completed an audit of hearing loop provision at 29 pharmacies in the town when pairs of volunteers visited premises to check the availability and quality of loop provision.

Hearing loops provide a magnetic, wireless signal which can be picked up by a hearing aid. They cut out exterior noise and in a chemist, where vital medical information is given, ensure that a hearing aid wearer can hear the pharmacist without any confusion.

The month-long audit concluded that 10 of the 29 chemists had effective loops.

Let’s Loop Swindon’s chair, Tim Mason, said that the group would be following up the audit by contacting the chemists and offering help to ensure that there was better lor’s provision.

Former Greendown pupil targets UK chart stardom

Council’s gallery and museum bid goes in SWINDON Council has submitted its bid to the Heritage Lottery Grant for aid to build a new museum and art gallery in the town centre.

The projected £20million cost is made up of a request of £12.5million from the HLF, £5million set aside by the council, and the balance of £5million from corporate and private benefactors.

The museum and gallery would become the centre piece of the town centre’s regenerated cultural quarter, opposite the Wyvern Theatre and close to Central Library. It would provide a great deal more space to exhibit artefacts and paintings in the Swindon collection of 20th Century modern art.

Currently Apsley House on Bath Road, has limited display space and the attached art gallery which marked its 50th anniversary last September can only show limited numbers of the paintings in the collection and small touring exhibitions.

The council will hear in April if the application is to be supported.

HLF is also considering a reapplication for support by St Mary’s Church, Lydiard Park.

POP star Taylor Jones has set his sights on breaking the UK after finding chart stardom across continental Europe.

The former Lydiard Tregoze Primary and Greendown School pupil has released his new single Emergency, buoyed by success in Belgium, Poland, Spain and Germany.

The 20-year-old upped sticks from Redhouse two weeks into his studies at New College to chase his dream of stardom in London. Two years on he now lives in Hamont, Belgium.

Taylor said: “I lived at my parents house in Redhouse until I was 18 and decided to move to London alone to pursue music. I quit college after just two weeks and decided I wanted to be in the studio making music - though I never took music at school.

“So I moved to London and stayed with friends and family for as long as I could, staying on sofas, sleeping on the floor at recording studios and spamming anybody I could to persuade them I was good enough.

“I made songs on my own from a homemade microphone as I had no funding behind me, and posted these creations to YouTube until I grew enough followers online to do small shows.

“After saving up from hosting club nights I was able to fund my first music video, which ended up charting at number two in the UK Urban Charts and remained top five for eight weeks.

“Since then, I formed my own record label Taylor Made and was signed by an international management team based in Belgium. They flew me over to Belgium to release my first solo track Rock This Party and I performed to 42,000 people in the biggest arena in Belgium - my second show there.

“One year later I am releasing Emergency and trying to break the UK.”

‘A Celebration of the Red Arrows’ marks the 50th Display season and features David’s unique insight to the famed flyers.

New year, new look for our superb sport site LINK Sport has been given a fresh new look as we continue to strive to become the home of sport in Swindon.

Since launching in September 2014, we’ve made significant strides and have been visited by close to 40,000 unique users, but our new design will allow us to take our coverage to the next level.

The fresh image gives readers access to more information than ever before about Swindon Town, Swindon Robins and Swindon Wildcats, as well as the town’s other sports, through up to the minute breaking news, live match updates and wide-ranging features hosted on a clear, easy to navigate website.

Big Match on its way to Swindon CHARITY football event ‘The Big Match’ is coming to Swindon Town Football Club on Saturday 9 May. The event will feature celebrities, footballing legends and the chance for Swindon Town fans to appear on the hallowed turf at the County Ground, all in the name of charity.

The Big Match is in aid of Action for Children and The Brain Tumour Charity, with organisers looking for local people who would like to fundraise and take part in the match, to get involved.

Alongside the event there will also be a training session ‘The Big Match Kidz’ on the County Ground’s pitch, which will allow children aged between five and 15 to get involved, register and raise funds whilst having a lot of fun.

On the day there will be lots of family fun from bouncy castles to penalty shoot-outs, as well as the chance to meet the event mascot, Fergal the Fox and The Star Wars Storm Troopers.

Following the match there will be ‘Extra Time’, the glitzy after event party, with tickets going on sale soon for this star-studded event.

Event sponsor Steve Fawke, of the Brunel shopping centre, said: “Having been involved with this wonderful charity event for three years now in Reading, I’m delighted it’s coming to Swindon.”

SWINDON Wildcats coach Ryan Aldridge is happy enough guiding his side from the bench and has no immediate desire to return to the ice.

The experienced EPL player has opted to stay away from playing action this season, having threatened to do so on a number of occasions only to eventually take to the ice when injuries have struck in previous seasons.

However, the 36-year-old isn’t expecting the same to happen this year.

He said: “I think I probably retired once and that was when I was in Basingstoke because I needed to concentrate on coaching, especially at that level.

Since then I’ve been needed to

dress for certain reasons, although I probably didn’t want to and I probably don’t miss it.

“There are always times when I could probably put my equipment on and get involved but I can’t really stand the sight of it. Will I miss it in the next couple of years? Yes, I probably will, but that’s the time for me to go off and play recreational hockey.

“The times this year when I’ve missed it have been when I don’t think we’ve battled hard enough, but I don’t think I can play at that level anymore anyway so there’s no point in me being out there.

“I don’t think I can 100 per cent say I won’t play again, but we would have to be in absolute dire straights for me to come back.”

Lydiard are rugby champs THE Lydiard Park Academy Year 7 rugby squad ended the season by winning the Swindon schools championship, and to test themselves further, they took on and beat renowned rugby playing school St John’s Marlborough.

The race for Rio hots up for Wanborough star in 2015 Hunt on a high after her twin success at British Championships LOUISE Hunt is going into a massive 2015 in confident mood after ending last year with her highest ever world rankings.

The Wanborough wheelchair tennis ace is now ranked 17 in singles and 11 for doubles after ending 2014 on fire, winning two national titles last month, with the qualifying period for next year’s Rio Paralympics opening in May. Hunt needs to be inside the world’s top 22 by May 2016 to secure her place in Brazil but, despite being well inside that mark already, she is keen to push on further.

“I’m currently in my two highest ever rankings which is amazing for me, but I’d be really disappointed if I’m where I am now going into Rio because I really want to be looking at top 15 or top 12,” she said.

Louise Hunt is excited for what lies ahead in 2015 level but we’ll have to see how it goes. For London it helped me to focus on the process and it all took care of itself because it’s easy to get caught up in things.

“It can be daunting because I’ve been thinking about Rio since

“It’s getting scary now because I can now say it’s the Olympics next year.”

Darryl looks for assistance PURTON speedway rider Darryl Ritchings is looking for sponsorship for the new season.

The youngster is back on the bike for 2015 after recovering from a serious head injury caused in a crash last April, which left him in a coma, but he has signed to race for Coventry Storm in the National League when the new season begins.

He’s currently looking for sponsors to help him do so.

“It’s really important to have sponsors, there’s so much to pay for during the season like fuel, engine services and new clutch plates so I’m really lucky to have had some great sponsors,” he said.

“It would really help me out massively and it can be some good advertising to businesses too, so it would be great to have as much sponsorship as possible.”
