We’d like to thank those committee members who have decided to step down for their contribution over the last few years. The journey to access the £1 million took a leap forward when the Toothill profile, vision and plan gained approval by the Big Local last August. THE long awaited redevelopment of the old Swindon College site has been completed, transforming the Regent Circus area with a Morrisons supermarket and a Cineworld cinema as anchor attractions. Around these are a range of well known restaurant brands such as Ask, Nando’s, Prezzo, Coal and the Gourmet Burger Kitchen. Commercial developers Ashfield Land first acquired the site in 2006 after Swindon College relocated to North Star. Curiously, the car park is pay and display rather than pay on exit which could inconvenience people on an evening out.

Funding lifeline could liberate community radio stations AFTER lobbying by community radio stations around the country, the government has changed its policy on advertising and programme sponsorship - but they’ll have to pay for the privilege. Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications & Creative Industries, announced in January that broadcasting community stations will be permitted to raise up to £15,000 in advertising revenue and on-air programme sponsorship. Swindon 105.5 manager Shirley Ludford welcomed the change of view. She said: “Stations have been campaigning for a change in legislation for some time. “South Swindon MP Robert Buckland has given us excellent backing, and with his support, we welcomed Mr Vaizey in December 2012 to see the station in action and meet the 100 volunteers who keep it running. “He discovered what a diverse mix of community and business representatives are involved in our

Station manager Shirley Ludford at 105.5 effort to keep Swindon residents better informed and entertained. On his departure he hailed us by saying: ‘SWINDON 105.5 IS Swindon.’” The representations and the minister’s visit had an impact as Shirley was invited to the House of Commons to present her views in July 2014, again supported by Robert Buckland. Shirley added: “This change in legislation will mean being able to widen our areas of funding, a little less time spent on grant applications and more time on delivery of our service. We will also be free to credit more fully on-air supporters of our service, as well as our provision of school, college,

university and work placements and training.” North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, Private Parliamentary Secretary to Ed Vaizey and also, Small Business Ambassador for the South West, commented: “This is good news for community radio stations which have become a vital service in their areas. Swindon 105.5 provides excellent opportunities for volunteers to be involved in radio production. Time not spent fundraising means time to broaden the scope of the station.” However the sting in the tail is that stations will have to apply and pay a fee to Ofcom to be allowed to raise advertising income.

Chelsea Pensioners Alan Thubron and John Gallagher with the Mayor Teresa Page, cutting the SSAFA pincushion shaped cake SSAFA Wiltshire, the country’s oldest military charity has launched a community arts project, which reaches back a century. The 100 Hearts for 100 Years project will commemorate 100 years since World War I by recreating pincushion ‘sweethearts’ which were made by wounded soldiers as they recuperated from their injuries. SSAFA, assisted by the Royal School of Needlework, has teamed up with various community craft groups to make 100 new

‘sweethearts’ featuring the badges of regiments which passed through Wiltshire on their way to the Western Front. Final decoration of the hearts will be made by soldiers, veterans and schoolchildren. The Mayor of Swindon Teresa Page officially welcomed the project to the town at Debenhams with the cutting of a pincushion cake provided by Brogans Cafe. Soldiers from 280 MC Sqn RLC and local army cadets, were joined by Chelsea Pensioners.

Help organise Services day in June ARMED Forces Day will take place in Swindon on Saturday 17 June with activities and entertainment in Faringdon Road Park, but the organisers are looking for more business support. David Bell, chairman of the new coordinating committee said: “We intend this event to be successful in raising awareness of the Armed Forces and to involve the community in the widest sense of the word.”

The day will be supporting five military charities: Royal British Legion (TRBL); Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA); BLESMA, Limbless Veterans; Blind Veterans UK; Combat Stress – the veteran’s mental health charity. Organisers are calling on military charities to put on stalls and displays, and for volunteers to help before and on the day. Contact Chris Leggatt on 07754 517971 or christopherjack@virginmedia.com

Grange Park disruption Robert Buckland MP, right, viewing the impact of the Persimmon building site on Grange Park with residents, from left, Cllr Tim Swinyard, Bev Cejer, David Barnard and Carole Swinyard PEOPLE living off Mulcaster Avenue, Grange Park have complained about the unnecessary disruption and lack of engagement by developers Persimmon who are building 75 houses close to Lydiard Park. Whilst site access is off Hook Street, utilities have to be connected to existing infrastructure which runs through the residential area built 30 years ago. Bev Cejer, chair of the Lydiard Fields Action Group which objected to the development before it was permitted after planning appeals, said: “The reality is that the houses are being built and we accept it, but we want to highlight the impact that installing utilities has on existing residents.

“People living off Mulcaster Avenue near Lydiard Park put up with a gas works over Christmas until early February. Plans of what is actually under the road are inaccurate, so contractors had to dig exploratory holes and trenches to locate gas pipes. “People living close to Loughborough Close have also had to put up with sewer pipe installation along the edge of Greendown Copse. “It is regrettable that Persimmon, who told us they would work with us so minimise the imposition upon and damage to the environment, but have made little effort to liaise. Can it be right there is no legal obligation to do this if it’s a bolt-on development?”

Contact centre fundraising exceeded THREE charities have benefited from fundraising by the staff social committee at West Swindon based company Jaywing, an outsourced contact centre for major brands. Throughout the year, staff took part in the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Super Hero Day, an Easter raffle, a Halloween party, Breast Cancer awareness, a summer family day that attracted over 400 people, Christmas jumper day and Comic Relief. During the World Cup, each client team represented a different country in the competition and decorated their work area in national colours and then raised money by serving food from their country. At a cheque presentation, Jaywing managing director Chris Hancock thanked the social committee for their hard work. “They organised 14

different events and nobody in the company was allowed an excuse for not taking part in some way. The group put in so much energy and brought a lot of fun to our workplace, and I’m really glad to support three great causes.” The committee initially set a fundraising target of £2,500 but managed to achieve over £3,620 which was distributed to Wiltshire Air Ambulance (£1,735.26) and £578.82 each to Prospect Hospice and Cancer Research UK. There were also donations to Sport Relief: £500 and the Wear it Pink campaign: £228.65. Bolstered by their success the social committee has set themselves a target of raising £4,000 during 2015 in aid of the Special Care Baby Unit at the Great Western Hospital and Swindon Foodbank.

Daniel achieves apprenticeship success GIVING youngsters the chance to find their way through appropriate vocational training and employment is what work based qualifications provider Green Labyrinth specialises in. A recent success story is Daniel Massey’s apprenticeship with town centre business DC Computers in Morley Street. Daniel had been interested in IT from a very young age and was really pleased to be given the chance to learn more in a real world situation in order to gain his Level 2 ITQ End User Apprenticeship. With support from Green Labyrinth’s assessor Stephanie Warren and the staff at DC Computers, Daniel has learnt a number of new skills including how to diagnose

and repair desktop PCs and laptops, upgrade software and systems, and other repair support tasks. Stephanie said: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Daniel and help him develop a range of skills to gain the qualification. I was able to use different ways of assessing him to suit his abilities. We congratulate him on passing his apprenticeship.” Darren Chapman, director of DC Computing, who lives in North Swindon, added: “We’re really pleased to have keen and enthusiastic people join us through the apprenticeship scheme via our partnership with Green Labyrinth. Daniel has become a valuable addition to the team following the completion of his apprenticeship.” www.dcpcuk.com

The Vine Church “Enjoy one of our Sunday Services, you will find them refreshing & relevant to everyday life!”

JENNY Hilborne, left, the Swindon writer who has lived in California since the late 1990s, returned to the town to visit family and discuss her latest novel. She has been featured in the Link several times since completing her first book in 2010, and ran a course for aspiring writers organised by Treetop Communications and the magazine. Her latest book - The Blackest Night - is the third in a series involving San Francisco police department inspector Mac Jackson. She also writes whodunnits involving another detective from the same department and will release a new novel in that series later this year. “Having written six crime novels it can be confusing trying to keep the story lines separate,” said Jenny. “I have detailed character biographies and I have to work hard not to re-use the same lines or describe

similar settings, my online readers are quick to pick such things up. My writing is based a lot on interesting observations around me.” All her titles can be found online at goodreads.com and several rank in Amazon’s top 100 for mystery/ suspense with many positive comments from readers. Their feedback is important to Jenny who says she is encouraged by what they say. “My books are darker in tone, though I try to give the antagonists some redeeming qualities,” commented Jenny. Jenny’s advice to aspiring writers is to keep the day job, engage in social media, blog about what you’re reading, and enjoy writing. “It’s taken time to build a following, but it’s paying off in a growing following who look out for the next book.” said Jenny. “My readers come from all over the world.”

OLD Town based human rights expert Dawood Ali McCallum has written his fourth book examining British colonial involvement in Kenya through the arrest and trial of an 80 year old British doctor accused of war crimes in 1954, during the period known as the Mau Mau uprising. Dawood tells a complex story through arguments for the defence and the case put by an ambitious prosecutor intent on highlighting British oppression. “The traditional view is that the Mau Mau rebelled against the

British,” said Dawood. “Yet only 32 whites died but over 2,000 Kikuyu tribes people were killed by Kikuyu in the Mau Mau movement. “There are major questions about where responsibility lies for past wrongs and who decides who is condemned as a terrorist and whom lauded as a freedom fighter: themes more relevant today than ever.” The Final Charge and Dawood’s other books can be obtained at Pen & Paper Bookshop, Victoria Road, Old Town. Hazelwood pupils touched by the Moon

Hands on experience for Hazelwood pupils Matthew, Summer, Joseph and Lily RARE samples of Moon rocks and a collection of impressive and ancient meteorites landed at Toothill’s Hazelwood Academy in mid-January to inspire a term of study about outer space. Pupils were able to get up close and personal with some hand-sized meteorites, including a 1.2 billion year old piece of Mars and a 4.3 billion year old nickel meteorite which originates from the beginning of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago. The lunar samples, on loan from the Swindon based UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC),

were collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s during some of NASA’s first manned space missions to the Moon. Most of the 382kg of lunar material brought back to Earth is studied by scientists, but small quantities have been distributed for use in planetary sciences educational packages. Year 5 teacher Kristie Brown said: “We’ve all been in awe of the age of the samples; it’s really special when you can actually hold something so old. The experience inspired a lot of classroom discussion, imaginative writing and science work.”

Moredon Primary School eco-kids, headteacher Claire Leach, rear left, and teacher Jenna Godfrey with the new Green Flag YOUNGSTERS at Moredon Primary School are celebrating the award of their second Eco Schools Green Flag award. To achieve the award again, the school had to show their commitment to five Eco Schools topics, instead of three. Over the last two years children have learnt about and taken practical action to save energy, reduce water usage, improve the school grounds, engage in healthy living and strive for greater biodiversity. Teacher Jenna Godfrey said Green Ambassador children in each class

preschool gymnastics where an early start makes a world of difference!

Playgroup to mark its sparkling 25 years Sparklers Pre-School is celebrating a quarter of a century and they’re inviting past and present families and staff to a party on Saturday 9 May. The playgroup started in 1990 in a community hut adjacent to the park in Sparcells before moving to a room attached to Peatmoor Primary School when it opened in 2000. Current group supervisor Lynn McMahon is hoping that lots of children who attended the playgroup and their parents will join the celebrations. “When you think about it, 25 years is a long time and

we’re really proud to have given so many children a good starting point in their education.” The group is open mornings and afternoons with 18 children per session. In November Ofsted confirmed Sparklers’ good rating. To register for the party which will

include games, a disco and refreshments, call 01793 875777 or email: info@sparklerspreschoolswindon. co.uk The waiting list is full at present but for details keep in touch via www.sparklerspreschoolswindon. co.uk

HOP Skip & Jump, which provides invaluable respite care for children and young adults with special needs and life limiting conditions is calling on businesses and individuals in the town to lend it more support. The first event of 2015 took place at The Sun Inn, Coate, at the end of January when £400 was raised at a Rock & Roll Bingo evening. Hop Skip & Jump manager Sonia Osbourn said: “We would like to thank Andy Moss and The Sun team for their generosity. It was a fab evening and we were delighted with the funds raised.” Hop Skip & Jump is based at Upper Shaw Farm in West Swindon and in the Brunel shopping centre, and provides support to over 200 families in the town. Up to 60 families regularly use the facilities each month. Over £150,000 is needed each year to cover running costs and staffing and the charity receives no direct funding from Swindon Borough Council in order to survive. Some of the funds come from Aiming High tokens given to parents with children and young people with disabilities, but the majority of the cash needed to deliver services is received from the generosity of businesses such as Nationwide and

Sonia Osbourn and Andy Moss of The Sun at Coate Zurich. Many doctors’ surgeries, colleges and community groups also boost funds through a whole range of activities. Sonia said: “We are appealing to businesses, organisations and individuals to make Hop, Skip & Jump their charity of the year. There are lots of ways the funds can help, from paying for specialist nursing care so that parents desperate for some me-time can get a break, to helping pay for a special event company to come into the centre to make play time special.” To find out more and to help, contact: Sonia Osbourn on 01793 977175 or email: supervisor. swindon@hopskipandjump.org.uk

Last month The Link featured Dr Peter Swinyard’s thirty years of general practice service in West Swindon, but on 22 March it will be 15 years since his Phoenix Surgery was opened at Toothill Village Centre by Julia Drown MP. Having been in the area for so long Dr Swinyard has patients from when he practiced at Ashington Way and Park Lane surgeries. And, as people have moved away from Toothill, they continue to return from North Swindon and Purton. Dr Swinyard is joined by Dr Mauro Bassanino and Dr Meenakshi Raina,

but, like all medical practices, there are vacancies at Phoenix. He said: “When I applied to Ashington Way in 1984 there were 40 candidates, now there are about 30 vacancies across the town which equates to a shortage of 3,000 appointments a week. I’m afraid there are very few applicants for openings; it’s an issue the public need to be aware of.” However the practice hopes to announce another doctor will be joining in a few months. MPs join Men United mates team SWINDON MPs Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland have pledged their support to Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign. The aim is to ‘keep friendships alive’ by encouraging men to see their mates more and do something great together to help beat prostate cancer. A recent YouGov survey of over 2,000 men, conducted on behalf of the charity found that 84 per cent of men believe that spending time with their mates is good

for their health and well-being. Owen Sharp, Prostate Cancer UK chief executive, said: “Men United has caught the imagination, and a new zeal for change in men’s health and we’re delighted to have the support of Justin and Robert to help us on our journey to ensure every man facing prostate cancer gets early detection, effective diagnosis and better treatments. Boost for teen cancer centre IT COMPANY Excalibur Communications completed their 2014 year of fundraising in aid of The Forever Friends Appeal at Bath Royal United Hospital (RUH) at the end of January by presenting a cheque for £50,000. The West Swindon based business mobile, IT and landline provider achieved the target by a direct donation, and also a charity sporting dinner with Welsh rugby great and gay icon Gareth Thomas as guest speaker, a day at Bath races and an attempt on the world Swiss Ball exercise record. As requested by Excalibur, this donation will go towards the provision of facilities for teenagers and young adults in the new Cancer Centre. Company CEO James Phipps said: “I can’t imagine what it is like to have a child diagnosed with cancer, but as a father of two, I would want the very best care available in the very best environment, as any parent would. “The RUH already treats children and teenagers from Swindon and Excalibur’s contribution will ensure that they and their parents will be able to access treatment and care in state of the art facilities. “We’ve had an extremely busy year raising our target amount. The enthusiasm and effort of Excalibur staff and the Swindon community has

been overwhelming. Raising such a large amount was a challenge but we pulled out all the stops to meet the target. “I want to say a huge thank you to all the hundreds of people who gave their time and money in support of our pledge, we truly couldn’t have done it without you.” Excalibur is now regarded as a ‘Principal Corporate Partner’ and the area within the new £27 million cancer centre associated with teenagers and young adults will bear its name. www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk

Lions’ celebrations have a golden tinge SWINDON Lions Club will celebrate 50 years of helping good and worthy causes in the town on 11 March at a lunch at Marsh Farm Hotel to be attended by Swindon Mayor Councillor Teresa Page and Robert Buckland MP. Since 1965 the club has raised over £300,000, with a large percentage donated to Swindon’s needy individuals and organisations. To achieve this, club members put on stalls at community events.

Since 1972 they have organised the famous fireworks display at the Polo Ground in November which has become a major fundraising event in the town’s calendar. The club also assists with annual collections for Marie Curie and Children in Need. Being part of a world-wide body, Lions are always ready to help when there are major disasters like the tsunamis in South East Asia and Japan, and disaster relief in Haiti, Pakistan and the Philippines.

The annual Santa collection is well known in the town, with half the money collected in 2014 going to help Ebola orphans. Swindon Lions Club welcomes new members at meetings that take place on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, 8pm, at the De Vere Village Hotel, Shaw Ridge. Residents’ organisations speak out for Thamesdown Drive extension A PUBLIC meeting organised by five residents’ associations across North and West Swindon on 13 January highlighted the need to complete the Thamesdown Drive to Great Western Way link road. It followed the publication by Swindon Council of a consultants’ report in December to investigate options to relieve traffic congestion on the west side of the town, which sees daily gridlock on Akers Way into the town centre, and Mead Way in West Swindon. Whilst completing Thamesdown Drive is a desirable objective, the consultants say securing over £50 million to build it will be difficult and they suggested a number of other lower cost options including turning all or parts of Akers Way and Mead Way into dual carriageways. In response to the public meeting, lobbying of councillors by residents and the town’s two MPs, the council has set up a cross party Future Infrastructure Working Group to look at the transportation network of the town, including extending Thamesdown Drive and building a commuter railway station off Purton Road, opposite Mouldon View.

22 swindonlink.com n March 2015

Kevin Fisher, chair of Shaw Residents’ Association added: “This road will take 5 to 10 years to complete, so a start must be made soon. If you think traffic congestion is bad now, imagine what the west side of the town will be like in ten years if the council and central government don’t get a grip on this project?” Council leader David Renard said: “The Thamesdown Drive to Great Western Way relief road is one of the great challenges that faces Swindon.” Cllr Dale Heenan, cabinet member for transport, added: “Residents have had 20 years of promises by politicians to build this road, and been let down every time. We will investigate what improvements can be made to the roads around West and North Swindon to reduce traffic congestion. But we disagree with the recent feasibility study: we do not believe that dualling Mead Way or Akers Way is the answer.” The town’s MPs and their Labour opponents all back the need for a western bypass. Bulldog girl raises ten times target KEIRA Buckley, who is a Year 5 pupil at Tregoze Primary School, set out to raise £100 by having her long hair cut off in aid of the Bulldog Rescue & Rehoming Trust. But her appeal to family and friends for support resulted in a fantastic total of £1,052. Her hair is also being put to good use by the Little Princess Foundation to make wigs for children who have lost theirs due to cancer treatment or skin conditions.

Janet’s Puppy Skool

“It’s wonderful to raise so much money,” said Keira. “Some people say bulldogs are ugly but I’ve always loved them. I have my own called Luna who is nearly two years old and he’s really cute. He’s soft and gentle and likes to sleep a lot. “I wasn’t sure if Luna would recognise me with my Emma Watson pixie cut, but he gave me a big lick to say he knew who I was.” www.bulldogrescue.org.uk www.littleprincesses.org.uk

Oakhurst Brownies with their European passports and their leaders Karen Kingston and assistant Zoe Young NORTH Swindon’s newest Brownie pack is looking for more helpers to increase the range of activities and give more girls the chance to enjoy the Girl Guiding experience. Oakhurst Brownies currently caters for 19 girls, but has a waiting list of nineteen. Other groups at Abbey Meads and Taw Hill are also desperately seeking more help. Oakhurst leader Snowy Owl Karen Kingston said: “Some people think Brownies are an old fashioned idea, but it’s not the case at all. The children love being in the group and enjoy working on projects with other girls to gain badges. “Over the last year we’ve celebrated 100 years of the Brownie movement, taken part in an adventure day and a sleep out event. We’ve made visits to Swindon Fire Station and had the police talking to us.

Karen said the need for more leaders is ‘desperate’ and helpers don’t have to be former brownies or guides. “It’s really sad that so many girls want to join and we have to keep putting them off. “For the next few weeks we‘re learning about countries around the world and later in the year we’ll be going on a litter pick and learning about cycle safety. “Mothers and grandmas came in recently to watch Brownies modelling uniforms from the past 101 years brought in by Gwen Knight, the North Wiltshire archivist. It really sparked conversations about guiding across the generations.” No experience is necessary to become a Brownie helper. If you’re enthusiastic and enjoy working with children, contact Karen to find out more by emailing: 1stoakhurstbrownies@gmail.com

THE Skoda Rapid Spaceback (in this case in Elegance trim with the most powerful 1.4L TSI 120bhp DSG engine) is the company’s latest addition aimed squarely at the family hatchback segment, a job for which it is ideally suited. The Rapid fills the gap between the the supermini Fabia and big brother Octavia. There’s the regular Rapid and the Rapid Spaceback. I’m not entirely sure why Skoda have done this but, well, they know their business one assumes. Maybe they feel that the ‘estate car’ looks of the Spaceback will appeal although there is very little difference in capacity. Personally, I prefer the stylish Spaceback. I wonder - if they did a VRS version would it be the Rapid Rapid? Our car had the 1.4L TSI petrol engine with 120bhp on tap. This is the fastest motor in the range and it is a cracker. 62mph comes up in 9.4 seconds with a top speed of 126mph and the car feels nice and lively in use. It is only available with a seven-speed semiauto DSG gearbox, which is a delight in my humble opinion. The driver can use it in standard Drive mode; there’s a sports option that hangs onto gears for longer - at the expense of fuel consumption - which adds a tad more punch, or there’s the alternative sequential gearbox type shift for

In his latest Link car review, GEOFF MAXTED of DriveWrite takes Skoda’s family classic Rapid Spaceback for a spin

A Space odyssey those who like a bit of hand action. Relax, leave it in Drive and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the performance. There’s plenty of power and the DSG ensures smooth, quick getaways from standing still, efficient shifts, smart overtaking and frugal main road cruises. If performance isn’t your thing then there are alternatives. A choice of 1.2L TSI petrol, with

either 85bhp or 104bhp which most drivers will find perfectly adequate. If real economy is required then the 1.6L turbo-diesel is the best bet. There is also the choice of Greenline engine versions for super-efficiency. The 1.4TSI is the most fun though for family drivers who like a bit of bang for their buck. Out on the road the Skoda Rapid Spaceback has accurate and wellweighted (if a bit numb) steering; there’s good grip and decent body control. I personally prefer firm suspension but a passenger did remark that the car felt too firm, especially over poor road surfaces - which is most of them. Our car was fitted with optional smart 17” alloys (15”/16” is the standard) which may have exacerbated things further. It’s a matter of personal preference.

The Spaceback costs £18,440 basic in Elegance trim with the 1.4L engine. The test car was also fitted with the Style Pack, which includes a panoramic glass roof (excellent), extended tailgate glass, black rear spoiler, as well as black door mirrors, rear lights and cornering front fog lights. It’s a stylish, if costly addition. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback is a choice selection. No, it’s not perfect; there’s a bit of wind noise and, the ride quality is a matter of opinion but it is terrific value and Skoda are noted for reliability. If it’s not quite big enough then the Octavia range starts at around £16,500 but for the nuclear family on a motoring budget the Rapid in its various guises would make a fine choice. www.drivewrite.co.uk

Another fascinating slice of Heritage hits the streets SPRING is about to be sprung as far as Swindon Heritage is concerned when the quarterly magazine goes on sale on Saturday 28 February, with Swindon’s army of female garment factory workers claiming the cover story. Compton’s, the Cellular Clothing Company, Nicholson’s and Charles Wills & Sons were an important part of the town as they provided work for the wives and daughters of the thousands of railway workers in the town. Their stories are told with impressive pictures from the archives. The new edition also has an aviation theme, from one man’s bid to keep the memory of a Battle of Britain pilot alive, to Swindon’s role in building the first jet engine, as well as a feature on some of the aircraft that have arrived at the Science Museum, Wroughton in recent years. Other topics include St

Augustine’s, Rodbourne’s ‘railway church,’ and a plan to honour Swindon’s Great War heroes, while the magazine also takes to the streets with professional artist Tim Carroll. For fans of Downton Abbey, there is a look at the locations used for the filming of the programme - most of which are within easy reach of Swindon. The 84 page magazine will be on sale at Swindon Central Library and Pen & Paper bookshop at the top of Victoria Hill. Costing just £4.99 it brings home the wealth of local history in our town. Women’s Day: IWD 2015 - 7 March THE celebration of International Women’s Day is becoming a wellestablished feature of Swindon’s community calendar, writes Juliet Platt. Now in its third year, this dynamic event on Saturday 7 March, from 10am, is set to enlighten, stimulate and inspire women of all ages. This year’s theme - Equality for Women is Equality for All - provides the opportunity for women to come together and connect across the different sectors of arts and culture, health, well-being, business and not-for profit organisations. Explaining this year’s focus organiser Karen Roswell said: “Our motto this year is ‘make it happen.’ “We will have a talk about income inequality by Tom Wilkes of Swindon Equality Group and a panel discussion with select Swindon business women about the

importance of equality and top tips on how to work better in business.” Taking place in Central Library and nearby arts venues, the event includes a variety of workshops, exhibitions and performances featuring creative journaling, Japanese craft, sari tying, henna painting, poetry, song and dance with a special performance by SAPAC (South Asian Performing Arts Centre) and Swindon Dance. Free health checks will also be available. Commenting on the artists whose work will be on display at the Artsite gallery Post Modern, Karen said: “Each of the artists featured is female, and each has a special focus on women’s lives. It should make for a very interesting and poignant selection of work.” For more information, visit International Women’s Day Swindon on Facebook. swindonlink.com n March 2015

Swindon Works through time HISTORIANS Andy Binks and Peter Timms have published a new book which tells the story of the town’s railway works, from its start in the 1830s right up to its closure in the 1980s. Many of the images featured have not been seen before. Andy worked ‘inside’ and is now chairman of the Swindon Society which preserves the history of the town. Peter is

well known for his knowledge of Swindon Works and has written several books about it. They will be launching the book, which will be available at a discounted price, at Swindon Central Library on Saturday 28 February, 11.30am. Discover a niche shopping opportunity A RETAILER in the Brunel Centre is calling on Swindon people to search out and support small independent shops in the town. Marion Miché, left, who runs Miché Niche on the Upper Floor of Brunel Plaza, and specialises in vintage and retro clothing and accessories, says it’s the independents that offer the unusual and different shopping experience that Swindon lacks. “You don’t have to go out of town to find the unique and quaint, come in and find fashions from the past that are being rediscovered. It’s great to see so many young people coming in,

but I’m sure there are many more who would be interested in what’s available in the shop. “It always fun when an older person comes in with their grandchildren and they find a garment on our rail and they tell stories about what was fashionable in their era. It says we were cool in our day too.” Marion also stocks Fairtrade craft items from Nepal where she visits every year to support a charity that runs schools and health centres in and around the capital Kathmandu. Wildcats back Head Check awareness

Swindon Wildcats and University of Gloucestershire student physios promoting Head Check at Link Centre in early February KATE Cady, former Freshbrook resident and now head of physiotherapy for the English Ice Hockey Association, is behind Head Check, a new concussion awareness campaign launched by the English Ice Hockey Association. With concussion being one of the most common ice hockey injuries, the campaign promotes awareness around management of this life threatening injury. Kate said Wildcats head coach Ryan Aldridge and England ice hockey sports therapist Katie Davies take the injury very seriously. “Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sydney Crosby

was perhaps the game’s most high profile player to suffer with concussion and he remained out for two years after trying to ice too quickly and suffering from returning symptoms. “Actress Natasha Richardson sadly died from her injuries on the ski slope, while closer to home, Swindon player Floyd Taylor also missed games earlier this season due to injury.” The campaign is supported by the Society of Sports Therapists, the University of Gloucestershire and Silverback sports clothing. www.eiha.co.uk

Time to raise the roof

Trust STFC unveil ambitions plans for Town’s Stratton Bank TRUST STFC have committed to building a roof on the Stratton Bank at the County Ground, with an expressed intention of getting the structure in place by the start of the 2016/17 season. Acting on the authority of Swindon Town, representatives of the Trust have engaged Beard Construction and Reid Steel to undertake surveys of the existing stand and its foundations, with a view to submitting blueprints to the council for planning permission this summer. Plans have been drawn up for a £500,000 propped cantilever stand, which the Trust intend to be funded partly by corporate finance and partly with contributions from benefactors and fans, and constructors were on site in early February assessing the work which would need to be done. Trust board member Mike Welsh, who has been overseeing the project, told Link Sport: “We’re very keen to improve the matchday experience of fans and we think one of the key items is that the Stratton Bank should have a roof. It was first mooted in 1958 but the Trust has now committed itself to working with the club to create a roof over the Stratton Bank. “The club were approached by the

Welsh The Trust see placing a roof on

the Stratton Bank as a major part of attracting more new fans to the County Ground and Welsh stressed that they are fully committed to completing the project. The £500,000 needed to finance the construction, according to Welsh, would ideally be made up of an 80 per cent contribution from businesses and 20 per cent from other sources, such as supporter donations or fundraising. “We are determined to achieve this. We have talked to some corporate supporters about providing some finance for the stand but we will also be talking to the wider public and fans of Swindon to support this as well. We’re quietly determined to get this done,” said Welsh. “We would like to see something like an 80-20 split. I think that would be great. I think a lot of people recognise that, to move the County Ground forward, this needs to occur. “They (the club) have been very positive. Everyone who works at Swindon Town understands the necessity of doing this. “We’re here for the long haul, we’re here for whoever eventually runs this club. Lee Power is doing a wonderful job at the moment but we’re taking the long view and the Stratton Bank is very much part of that.” swindonlink.com n March 2015

Imagine Cruising sponsor Hunt’s Paralympic bid WANBOROUGH wheelchair tennis star Louise Hunt has been given a major boost in her bid to reach next year’s Rio Paralympics after receiving sponsorship from Imagine Cruising. Hunt, who competed at London 2012, picked up a cheque for £5,000 from Swindon Town sponsors Imagine on recently at Next Generation at Kembrey Park,

where she regularly trains. The qualification window for Rio opens later this year and Hunt is grateful for the support she has received from Imagine. She said: “I am so excited to be supported by Imagine Cruising going forward. “The funding which they are providing me with will go towards my coaching and training as well as

contribute towards extra tournament costs. “My journey to Rio is going really well so far and I getting ready to start my season in February. “I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone at Imagine Cruising for their support and belief in me. It means a lot and it is a huge support in helping me get to my second Paralympics.”

Wildcats’ head coach writes for Link Sport

Very superstitious

SUPERSTITION has a major role to play in most sports and in hockey it’s no different. Some players are more superstitious than others. I’m probably more superstitious as a coach than I was as a player – the shirt I’m wearing, for instance, I haven’t won in yet. The guys have a routine with the way they get dressed, in the warmup and right before the game in the way they tape their sticks. Kenton Smith has got a couple of quirky superstitions. Just before a game he’ll drink from a water bottle and squirt the water bottle in exactly the same way every time, the same amount of times. He always has to know the shots after a game as well. I always had to touch the face-off dot on the blueline on the boards before a game – there are some quirky ones. You do it once, you win and then it sticks. For me, I can do something one week and forget it by the time the next week comes around. I started picking up on these Link Sport’s Sam Morshead presents Andy Williams with his player of the month trophy superstitions in Bracknell. Hot showers at Bassett THE transformation of Royal Wootton Bassett RFC has continued with the installation of a new hot water system. The club moved from their old home at Stoneover Lane to Ballard’s Ash in the Autumn of 2013, where they now have a shiny new clubhouse and impressive playing pitches. However, the shower system was found to be inadequate and £65,000 has been put towards installing a new system, thanks to a £15,000 grant from the Hills Group, Sport England and further club fundraising.

Bassett chairman Chris Elias said: “We are delighted with the support received from Hills and Community First in respect of this project. “The new system which has been installed with the full support of Sport England will ensure that our members and all users of the Ballard’s Ash sports ground will no longer have to endure cold showers after their matches. “We have already seen the smiles returning to people’s faces – it’s been heart-warming in more ways than one.”

Robins’ potential excites Rosco THE potential improvement in his Swindon Robins team gets boss Alun Rossiter more and more excited every time he looks at his 2015 line-up. The Blunsdon side boss added the final piece of the jigsaw yesterday with the signing of number one Adrian Miedzinski, placing him alongside captain Troy Batchelor, Grzegorz Zengota, Nick Morris, Kyle Howarth and reserves Charles Wright and Lewis Rose for 2015. With each of his top five riders having something to prove and with his reserve pairing among the Elite League’s strongest,

the Great Britain manager is confident of keeping up his 100 per cent record of reaching the play-offs in what will be his fourth season since returning to the club from Coventry. “The more and more I look at it the more excited I am about it, I just think there is so much room for improvement in there,” he told Link Sport. “It goes all the way through and that’s what you’ve got to look at, you can see some teams and there’s not a lot of improvement in many of the riders, they are what they are, but with this team there’s bags of potential.

“I’m sure there will be some negative people, there always are, but our goal is the play-offs as it always is. “The club and I don’t do anything else but the play-offs, we’ve shown that over the last few years.” The new season gets underway in March, with the Robins hosting the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund meeting on 8 March before the Bob Kilby Memorial Meeting on 26 March. The Elite League campaign is due to begin with home and away meetings against Poole on 3 April.

to his diary before the start of the year, and it’s his quest for more time on the bike and the more manageable British schedule which has tempted him back. “I’m back and I’m very happy of course,” he told Link Sport during his visit to Swindon recently. “I need more racing and I need more meetings, I’m back to Swindon which is where I rode many years ago and I know people at the track and feel good here. “I remember it all, this was nine or 10 years ago but it was my first full season in England after I raced in Eastbourne only in the summer time so this was a very good school for me. “Many times I’ve thought about this decision and I didn’t sign a contract in Sweden because my club (Vargarna) have dropped down a league which is not ideal, and I have a big average

Kyle has kept the hunger for 2015

RETURNING Robin Kyle Howarth is hopeful staying on the bike over the winter will help when the new season begins this month. The 20-year-old, who is back with Swindon for a second spell in 2015, has spent his winter on a racing holiday in Australia where he competed in a number of events including the Rob Woffinden Classic, held in memory of Tai Woffinden’s late father. Howarth made the podium in several of the events he competed in and also enjoyed a handful of practice sessions while staying with close friend Josh Grajczonek in Australia, which he believes will benefit him going forward. “I was down in Perth which was really good and I rode in a few meetings there, the Rob Woffinden Classic and a couple more, and got on the podium so it all went pretty and didn’t find a club. well,” he said. “Maybe I will still sign in Sweden “It was a mixture of racing and because before the start of the season we have an open window and maybe I having some time to relax, but I had a bike there and it was good to be can sign a contract there. on it. “This is no problem now, racing “It’s all about staying fresh but in Poland, Sweden and England, also having time on the because now in England bike, that’s really imwe have only 28 meetdway spee h The Britis portant, because you ings which is better season begins at Blunsdon on don’t want to be gobecause it’s hard the host ns Robi the March 8 as ing into the season racing 50 matches annual Ben Fund Bonanza, in here and living in aid of the sport’s injured riders. rusty or feeling like Poland.” The meeting begins at 4pm and you haven’t been on the bike for ages. Star Pole completes Swindon’s 2015 septet ADRIAN Miedzinski has insisted the reduced British fixture list and his desire for more time on the bike were the key factors in his return to UK speedway, after signing on to become Swindon Robins’ number one in 2015. The Pole arrives at Blunsdon for the entirety of the 2015 campaign on an 8.21 average, which will see him start at number one, as he returns to the club he raced for during the 2006 season following a brief stint at Eastbourne. Since then Miedzinski, who started the 2012 season with Poole, has twice helped his country to World Cup gold and won a Grand Prix in his home town of Torun in 2013 to ensure he is on the cusp of the world’s elite. Currently, the 29-year-old is only contracted to race for the Robins and for powerhouse Torun in his homeland, although he could add Sweden
