New plans for North Star Revamped plans for a ski slope, a 5,000 capacity arena, multi-screen cinema, 10 pin bowling alley and hotel on the North Star site, adjacent to Oasis Leisure Centre, were revealed at a public consultation on 20 and 21 March. Members of the public can look at the plans and express their view on the proposals at: www.moiraicapital.co.uk This will be available until the end of Friday 10 April. The plans were amended following an earlier consultation and once the current process is completed a formal planning application will be submitted to Swindon Council. The objective of the North Star development is to complement the refurbished Oasis Leisure Park,

where a £1.9 million modernisation programme is now nearing completion. The North Star project, which also includes cafés, bars and restaurants, will hopefully go before the council by the end of May with the completion of the project, if all goes well, predicted to be Autumn 2017. Moirai’s chairman, Martin Barber, said: “The very positive response by operators to the changes made to our plans means that we already have firm commitments for the vast majority of the available spaces. “The development will be at the heart of the community, and it is important that the public have their say on the plans.”

Swindon Council leader David Renard said: “It’s what we wanted for Swindon. It’s what we’ve talked about for some time and it’s very good to see it coming to fruition. ”There will always be people who are critical of schemes; I’ve seen it with many projects. We bring forth proposals and the response is always ‘we’ll believe it when we see it’. It’s just human nature but we’ve

got a really good track record of delivering things for Swindon. This plan is hugely important as it’s a regional leisure destination. It’s not just for the people of Swindon; it’ll draw people from some considerable distance and will put the town on the map. It’s about creating a new impression of what Swindon can offer and this is one part of the jigsaw. We’ve seen with Regent

Circus that people are willing to come out and spend money if the right facilities are there; I think we’ve now got some momentum going.” • Celebrating 30 years since Link Centre opened. Business support needed for Armed Forces Day celebration Armed Forces Day will be marked in Swindon on Saturday 27 June, but the organisers need more backing from business. David Bell, chairman of the coordinating committee, said: “I’ve sent 57 letters to local companies but have not received any positive response. “We really need businesses to come on board.” There will be activities and entertainment, plus displays by military and reserve personnel and the charities to be supported on the day: Royal British Legion

(TRBL); Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA); BLESMA, Limbless Veterans; Blind Veterans UK; Combat Stress – the veteran’s mental health charity. David added: “We intend this event to be successful in raising awareness of the Armed Forces and to involve the Swindon community in the widest sense of the word.” To volunteer help before or on the day, and to provide business sponsorship, call Chris Leggatt on 07754 517971 or christopherjack@ virginmedia.com

Green light for two new secondary schools School Reform Minister Nick Gibb MP talking to a UTC Swindon student with, from left, Robert Buckland MP, Swindon Council leader David Renard and Justin Tomlinson MP A crisis in secondary school place provision in the town will be avoided in 2017 after it was agreed two new schools can be built under the government’s free schools programme. Forty-nine across the country were announced on 9 March as a result of the last round of bid submissions before the general election. In North Swindon New College will build the Great Western Academy on a site adjacent to the former Motorola building, off Thamesdown Drive. In South Swindon the Diocese of Bristol Academies Trust is to build a school for children of all faiths and no faith in the Wichelstowe development. Minister for School Reform Nick Gibb MP made the announcement before a tour of UTC Swindon, accompanied by both the town’s MPs. He said: “It’s impressive that two of the 49 schools announced today are in Swindon; that’s because of the quality of the bids. They have been through a very rigorous process and have shown a clear demonstration that there is demand from parents. “These schools will help equip young people for life in modern Britain by giving them the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.” Justin Tomlinson MP for North Swindon said securing another school in North Swindon to ensure there are enough secondary places available to cope with the predicted bulge in demand is his proudest achievement since being elected in 2010. “Having asked New College to step forward and bid, I have worked tirelessly with them both in Swindon and crucially in Parliament to make absolutely certain we were

successful. “To have secured two new schools is unprecedented; they will both expand the number of school places and parental choice.” Robert Buckland for South Swindon said: “We have a fast growing town and these places are essential to ensure its continued progress. This decision will take the pressure off existing schools and give parents greater choice. “A lot of hard work has been put in by both the Diocese of Bristol and New College, and, crucially the communities which will be served by the schools. Each bid had to be supported by the signatures of parents who will use the schools.” The new schools could be built to open in September 2016 but New College principal Graham Taylor believes September 2017 is a more realistic target. “We’re delighted with the news announced by the Minister. I am surprised that both bids were successful but it’s great for Swindon. “The Great Western Academy, as we have called the new school in North Swindon, has been made possible by the huge level of parental support and backing from businesses. Justin Tomlinson MP has put in a tremendous amount of work to ensure the problem of a lack of places will not disadvantage the area. “But the hard work continues apace. Now that we have a positive decision, there’s a colossal amount of work to secure the site, design the facilities and manage the construction programme to hit the deadline. “Ensuring we recruit the right staff to bring the town a great school is also essential.”

West Swindon lunch club reopens with roast turkey on 1 April After a month’s closure when members of Toothill Lunch Club thought it had gone for good, Neil McNally has come to the rescue to relaunch the club on 1 April, 12.30pm, along the lines of his similar provision at Pinehurst. A roast is promised every week, prepared with fresh ingredients by chef Clive Williams. A social club will also start on the same day. Gail Light, who facili-

Superfast Broadband plan for the whole of Swindon A controversial project which will ensure almost the entire borough has access to superfast broadband has been given the go ahead. And the plan will not cause massive disruption by digging up the streets to install cables as the whole project will be done wirelessly. Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet has approved UKB Networks as the preferred supplier that will increase superfast broadband coverage from 80 per cent to 99.4 per cent of households and businesses in Swindon by 2016. But critics of the scheme say that the speed of the broadband will still not be good enough as laying fibre cables through Virgin or BT would create a faster service. The plan, which will see 101,000 households and premises receiving superfast broadband and only 573 in the more rural areas still to be serviced, will see at least 16 strategically placed streetmasts and monopoles erected throughout the borough to transmit superfast broadband to each household. Anyone signing up would get a box installed for free on the front of their house by UKB Networks and then would pay their internet

service provider as normal for the broadband service. Critics say the scheme, which promises speeds of more than the superfast broadband minimum of 24mbps, will not be fast enough; fibre broadband can provide speeds in excess of 100mbps. Councillor Toby Elliott has been campaigning for fibre in Priory Vale since 2012 and does not believe this solution will provide what is needed. In a statement he said: “The 4G LTE scheme leaves me with serious concerns. It does not deliver fibre broadband for Priory Vale and I will

keep adding pressure to BT / Virgin Media and others to secure a longterm solution.” In July last year Swindon Borough Council and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport each agreed to invest up to £1.5 million of funding to extend superfast broadband coverage. The supplier was also asked to invest a significant amount into building and operating the network. After an open market exercise the project team asked the cabinet to approve a bid from UKB Networks, which also runs the Relish scheme

in London, for an extension of its sister company’s UK Broadband’s existing 4G-LTE Fixed Wireless network in Swindon. The rollout will start this summer with completion expected by the end of 2016. The council have said no money will be paid to UKBN until they start to deliver. According to the council the project delivers the superfast coverage without using all the funding as it only costs £1.9 million with the remainder of the money to be spent on trying to ensure the final 0.6 per cent get superfast broadband. Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon cabinet member for the economy, regeneration & skills, said: “This is an important step in our ambition to make superfast broadband available across the borough. The fact that we should be able to achieve so much without using all the money available is good news for the taxpayer. I can understand why people would prefer fibre but this solution means that 99.4 per cent of households will get superfast broadband when before they couldn’t. It’s a no-brainer. BT have said continually that they would not go lay fibre in Priory Vale so this is the best alternative solution.”

CALM calls for parents to come forward

CALM coordinators Helen Seward and Sam Goodchild at the CALM memorial bench and pump in the walled garden in Lydiard Park Swindon charity CALM (Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Movement) is putting together a book of remembrance where memories of children who lost their lives through cancer or leukaemia can be honoured. Project coordinators Helen Seward and Sam Goodchild are calling for families to come forward to make sure their child is part of this special book. Sam, 43, from Greendmeadow, whose own daughter Charlie died at the age of seven in 2005, said: “We just don’t want any child to be forgotten. The book will serve as a way that families can remember their loved ones and make sure their memories stay alive.” The leather-bound book was donated by the Rotary Club a few years ago. The plan is for the names

to be collected and then each entry will be written out in calligraphy before the book is displayed at Lydiard House. Helen, 46, of Pinehurst, said: “We have started to write to parents to ask if they would like their loved one in the book but the problem is that over the years people move house or change numbers so it’s quite hard to find all of them. “A parent never forgets their child but we want their memories to live on in the wider world as well. This is a way to cherish memories and remember what they gave us.” Helen’s daughter Abigail died at the age of three in 2002 from a brain tumour and she’s been supporting the charity ever since. Medic heads to California to study nutrition for the ill A surgical registrar from Royal Wootton Bassett is jetting off to California having been awarded a grant from The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. Zoe Barber will be travelling to the USA in October to investigate Project Angel Food, which delivers nutritious meals to the critically ill in Los Angeles, in order to teach others the importance of nutrition and human contact. To mark its 50th anniversary year as Sir Winston’s living legacy, The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust has just awarded a record number of 150 Travelling Fellowships - investing at least £1.34 million in British citizens. Between them the fellows will travel to 58 countries across six continents where they will carry out a wide range of projects. Advice for small businesses

Now there’s an idea. Have you ever had an idea for a business but were unsure who to ask for help? Outset Swindon has the solution. We offer people in Swindon access to FREE support to help start their own business. Our programme is fully-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Swindon Borough Council.

“Some patients go home from hospital with limited support. The basic tasks such as shopping and cooking can be really difficult after a major operation.” Project Angel Food was set up 25 years ago and delivers over 2,000 nutritious and tasty meals every day to nourish people debilitated by critical illnesses who would otherwise struggle to feed themselves. Zoe added: “I love cooking and really enjoy making meals for my friends and family. Food is one of life’s great pleasures that ill people tend to miss out on because cooking for yourself when you are poorly requires a lot of effort. “By providing people with meals, we are able to take the pressure off and give them more time to spend with their loved ones. Good nutrition is proven to be beneficial for treating and preventing illness.” Once she has completed her fellowship, Zoe’s aim is to set up something similar in the UK. She plans to take a year off from her surgical training to set up a charity before resuming her career in October 2016. www.angelfood.org www.wcmt.org.uk

Any useful tips for buying a house with my partner? There are 2 ways to jointly own or buy a property Joint Tenants: If you are in a marriage or stable relationship, buying as Joint Tenants is probably fine. You will own the property jointly, you split income and costs equally and, on the death of one owner, the other owner automatically inherits the deceased person’s share of the property. (The most common way married couples own their family home). Tenants In Common: If you are unsure as to whether the relationship will remain stable or long-term, buying a property as Tenants In Common could work better. This way you would each own an individual share of the property, which you can theoretically sell to a third party without the agreement of the other owner (the mortgage lender may have to be satisfied). Also, if you want to split the income unequally you should buy as Tenants in Common. From Middleleaze to the Middle East Former Greendown pupil Lotty Hall is travelling to the Occupied Palestinian Territories at the end of March as part of a project to bring much needed help to the troubled region. The 23-year-old from Middleleaze has been selected as part of David Cameron’s Big Youth Scheme under The International Citizens Service which provides funds for young people to fight poverty across the world. She is travelling via Jerusalem to The West Bank and working with charity International Services on their Right to Education Campaign to spend 10 weeks in the region from 30 March to 5 June. In recent years, the situation between the Palestinians and the Israelis has worsened especially after last year’s seven-week long aerial bombardment of Gaza by the Israelis in retaliation to mortar attacks. Based in Ramallah at Birzeit University, Lotty will be working at a grass roots level helping Palestinian students tell the stories of their experiences. She said: “The idea is to give them a voice. With that in mind I will also be giving them guidance on how they can get their voices

I’m not very political and will be going with an open mind.” This is not the first time that Lotty has travelled to far-flung places to help others. During her university course she visited Uganda twice where she went into schools as a teacher and was even an intern to the legislature on her latest trip. MP supports Isambard School’s global education pledge

Here’s our Good school

Suzanne Lloyd with happy Hazelwood pupils

Victoria Schoeps and Thomas Fox presenting Justin Tomlinson MP with their Send My Friend to School letter North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson visited students at Isambard School in early March to support their work on the Send My Friend to School campaign, and receive letters calling on world leaders to put education for all at the top of the global agenda. Students Victoria Schoeps and Thomas Fox made the case to the MP for giving all children improved opportunities. Promising to deliver the students’ letter directly to the Prime Minister, he said: “The Isambard students gave an impressive, well argued

presentation. The future prosperity of our world relies on well trained young people who have the right to a decent education.” Victoria said: “Justin knows the issues and it was encouraging that he backs the campaign.” Thomas added: “Justin has strong opinions and good motives; I’m glad he supports the need to give every child an education.” The school has also ordered a thousand wristbands that the students will sell for £1.50 with all the money going to charity.

Hazelwood Academy in Toothill is celebrating after Ofsted inspectors found that it is a good school in all areas of work. They particularly praised the leadership shown by headteacher, Suzanne Lloyd, who joined the school in April 2013, and the team she has built around her. Prior to conversion to academy status in June 2013, the school had a history of underachievement amongst pupils, including the most vulnerable and the most able. The new report comments: “The good quality of teaching, including the teaching of reading, writing and mathematics, has led to pupils’ increasingly good progress since the academy opened.” Mrs Lloyd said: “This is a significant milestone for the whole school community. For the first time in the history of the school it has been

judged better than satisfactory. This is fantastic recognition of the hard work and commitment of staff, pupils and governors over the last 18 months. “Most importantly I would like to commend our pupils on the pride and care they have shown in the academy and their work. Ofsted praised the children on their maturity and on how well they spoke about their school.” As a special treat all the pupils walked to Cineworld at Shaw Ridge for a private screening of the new animated movie, ’Home’ on 26 March. Nursery pupils were joined by the Easter Bunny for a tea-party and the day ended with a special celebration disco, whilst parents and friends joined staff and governors for an informal celebration gathering.

Books more than fun dressing up day Link magazine’s annual invitation to cover Brook Field Primary School’s celebration of World Book Day on 5 April did not disappoint. Everybody came to school dressed as their favourite character, and staff once again led the way in creativity. However the day was very much a learning experience with Year 2 writing book reviews, Year 3 dressing up as characters from the Wizard of Oz and discussing the moral of the story and Year 4 crafting origami books. Year 5 children studied the Chinese Willow Pattern story as part of the ancient civilisations curriculum module and Year 6 spent the day in a workshop bringing Shakespeare to life. Deputy headteacher Rachael Taylor said: “We always have a great time but we plan it with a clear educational purpose. Each class also enjoyed unwrapping boxes of new books which had been purchased by the Friends of Brook Field. It was like Christmas had come again.”

Former student unveils disability support centre

Paralympian tennis player Louise Hunt paid a visit to her former school to open ‘The Hub’ on Monday 9 March. Commonweal School now provides more places for students with physical difficulties than ever, due to a recent expansion and renovation of its specialist provision. The facility provides the right environment for some 65 learners with a variety of needs, enabling them to achieve their potential with support from experienced professionals. The demand for extra space has come from an increase of children with physical impairments within the town over the past few years. Funding from Swindon Council now enables more pupils to receive specialist education in the town rather than seeking support and resources outside the borough. Louise talked to students about her experiences since leaving Commonweal, including being a member of the Great Britain tennis squad at the Paralympic Games in London in 2012 and her hopes to qualify for the games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

From 1 April new budgets come into play and the number of children’s centres in the town will have been cut from 14 to 7 to reduce Swindon Council’s costs. In the West the independent charity West Swindon Family Centre will continue with a narrower focus of activity based on group work with parents. Business development coordinator Mike Smith commented that the centre’s funding from the council had been reduced by half which meant losing two members of staff. He said: “As a Family Centre we will be receiving funding from Swindon Borough Council to deliver tried and tested parenting programmes and support parents in accessing and completing them. “The first aim of this is to equip parents with the necessary tools to help them face the challenges of parenting and create long term positive parent/child relationships. “The second is to expand our range of groups, programmes and projects to reach children, parents and families beyond our normal audience. This is to help the centre move away from a dependency on council funding and towards a more self-sustaining future.” Butterflies Children’s Centre at

Abbey Meads Primary School will now become a Family Centre; a 30 per cent cut in funding has meant a reduction of two staff and a cut in hours for all others. Manager Tanya Parkinson said: “We will do less one-to-one family support work to concentrate on parenting groups. Staff have received additional specialist training and we hope to become a centre of excellence. “Another exciting development is that Butterflies has been commissioned to run an Early Bird Plus programme for parents of children aged 4 to 8 years diagnosed on the autistic spectrum. “I’m particularly pleased that we are able to continue our very popular Stay and Play sessions, which can attract up to 60 parents and children a session, but this provision will be funded by the sessional payments of those who attend. “Whilst the focus at Butterflies has changed, our core activity remains. I believe we’ve always been good at offering group support to parents and with the training recently undertaken we will continue to deliver the best service possible.” • Butterflies is holding a fundraising Spring Fair on 8 April. Family Centre group gets good grade from Ofsted The Panda pre-school at West Swindon Family Centre, which was judged to be requiring improvement a year ago, has been rated as Good after an Ofsted inspection in February. The report specifically commends the pre-school in key areas: ‘Staff assess the children’s learning and share what the children are learning next with their colleagues. This liaison encourages consistent teamwork to support children and further advance their good progress.’ ‘Staff are caring and sensitive to children’s needs. They talk with parents about the children’s individual requirements and vary starting routines to help children settle.’ ‘Children behave well because staff offer consistent routines and expectations.’ ‘Staff fully understand their roles and responsibilities. They work closely to provide a safe and secure environment for children.’ Family Centre business development coordinator Mike Smith said: “The whole team has worked very hard at addressing the issues identified in March 2014. We’re particularly pleased that the report says:

preschool gymnastics where an early start makes a world of difference!

Some of the Panda children with staff, from left, Amy Bedford, Olivia Salaman, Janet Donnelly, Laura Alldritt ‘The team has effectively addressed recommendations from the last inspection to help ensure the provision continues to evolve.’ “The Ofsted inspector has identified more resources needed to be in place to help children develop an understanding of their wider world in order to achieve an outstanding grade. Staff are keen that this is quickly remedied and are working with management and parents to extend the range of play resources and learning opportunities.” Panda Pre-school is run by West Swindon Family Centre, a unique and independent children’s charity

based in Freshbrook. It delivers a range of services, projects and initiatives designed to empower children and parents by reducing inequality, promoting positive life choices and strengthening relationships. Panda currently has 23 children on roll and is in the process of expanding to offer more places. Bandanas boost awareness of brain tumours Joe with his sister Megan and mum Niki Joe Wilding and his family from Haydon Wick went to school in bandanas on Friday 6 March to support the Brain Tumour Charity and the Headsmart Campaign. Brain tumours are the biggest killer of under 18s and Joe has one which is under control, following surgery and 18 months of chemotherapy.

The ‘Wear it Out’ campaign aims to raise awareness of brain tumours and raise money for urgent research. Joe and Alana Mead, his class teacher at St Francis Primary School, Taw Hill, wore bandanas all day, as did Joe’s mum Niki, who works at Tadpole Farm Primary. Fundraise for Prospect Hospice by luxury train, or on a family bike ride A taste of the very best in train travel, and a springtime bike ride for all the family, are just two of the fundraising activities Prospect Hospice is asking local people to register for in the coming months. The charity, which cares for and supports more than 5,700 people in Swindon, Marlborough and north Wiltshire each year, is offering a unique opportunity to board the Belmond British Pullman, sister train to the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress, on Saturday 7 November. The gala dinner experience will give over 200 people an evening of sumptuous food and wine in the train’s elegant carriages, evoking the golden age of train travel, an era when supreme comfort and fine dining were very much the order of the day.

“It promises to be a unique occasion for the lucky 110 couples who will spend an evening aboard the beautiful 1920/30’s art deco Pullman carriages,” said Sheryl Crouch, Prospect Hospice’s head of fundraising. Before then, on Sunday 10 May, there’s a chance to discover the Wiltshire countryside between Swindon and Marlborough on two wheels when a marshalled bike ride will follow the route of a former railway line. Riders can start at either town, with the option to turn back from the midway point, or to complete the full ride cycle. Refreshments will be available for participants at the midway point. Fringe benefits on offer This year’s Madam Renards’ Mini Fringe sees theatre performances take over the town for eight days from Tuesday 7 April to 14 April. And this year it will be better than ever as it has won Arts Council England backing. This will be the fringe’s third year and almost every theatre and performance venue in the town will be taking part. Run by Madam Renards, a Swindon based company dedicated to producing and promoting professional arts in Swindon, the Mini Fringe has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 2013. Matt Fox, one of Madam Renards’ co-directors, said: “From an event which featured seven shows over five days in 2013, the 2015 Mini Fringe hosts 19 different performances from local, national and international companies. “We started the fringe as a way to provide a platform for fringe artists and new work in Swindon, and having secured funding from the Arts Council this year, the event has really taken off.” Shows range from stand-up comedy to farce, from contemporary drama to musical theatre, and from one person shows to vaudeville performances. Matt added: “If you are interested in theatre then you really need to come and see the shows that are part of this year’s fringe. We’ve got something for every conceivable taste and we’ve tried to keep the tickets cheap. As well as productions The Mini

There’s nothing like a bit of comedy to blow the cobwebs away after the winter months. And over the next 30 days Swindon will be serving up a whole feast of comedians that will suit every palatte. One that you should definitely head out to see is Canadian Tom Stade who is appearing at Swindon Arts Centre. This is a comic who is currently at the top of his game when it comes to stand-up and he will definitely have you in stitches. He said: “People of Swindon, you better be ready. I’m a comedic warrior and will be taking no prisoners. I’ve been training for months now just for this Swindon show and have been living off a diet of one-liners and maybe a few anecdotes when I get especially hungry.” Tom will be appearing on Friday 17 April. Tickets are available via www.swindontheatres.co.uk The Wyvern Theatre also has a host of comedians including Tim Vine (11 April), Stewart Francis (17 April), Lee Nelson (18 April) and Rich Hall (29 April). But if money’s tight you could always head to the free Ocelot

Dylan Rhymer at The Vic Comedy Night held on the first Monday of every month at The Vic in Old Town from 8pm. This month it’s on Monday 6 April and features four comedians and a compere. Headlining is Canadian Dylan Rhymer. Dylan has an eye for the ironic and taste for the absurd and is more than just funny as his comedy goes straight for the jugular while nibbling on your earlobe. And finally if you fancy a laugh without a comedian head to the M.E.C.A on Friday 10 April for a ‘fun’ 70’s, 80’s and 90’s disco in aid of Comic Relief. Tickets can be bought from TK Maxx, or Caroline’s Tailoring in Rodbourne, for £5 in advance. And you should definitely dress to impress.

iPad video makers film festival recognition

Debut film makers, Leah, Charlie and Jade with Keith Phillips of Ideal Three media students at Lydiard Park Academy with barely any filmmaking experience had their first project screened at a film festival. The school was invited to take part in a project to explore the creative potential of making video using the power available in, what has become, everyday kit. Keith Phillips, of Swindon-based Ideal Films, was one of several media tutors commissioned by the Into Film Shoot Smart programme to investigate ways of making film more accessible and less costly. The young film makers - Charlie Smith, Leah Wingfield, Jade Penman - wrote, shot and edited their project entirely on iPads, demonstrating how easy it is to tell quite complex stories without complicated, heavy equipment. The result is ‘The Other Girl,’ a 3 minute mini-thriller which so impressed Into Film that they entered the piece into the international Camera Zizanio festival which took place in February in Pyrgos, Greece. The girls were unable to go to the festival because of Year 11 mock exams, but their teacher, Cathy Urquhart, flew to the festival to represent Lydiard Park Academy. She said: “There were student film makers from all over Europe in workshops. The competition included short animations and half hour documentaries.

“I attended the screening of our film. We didn’t win but I received quite a few comments about the imaginative story. Keith worked with the students over eight after-school sessions. He said: “Sometimes young people start with an idea of making a blockbuster. But Charlie, Leah and Jade quickly focussed on the simple approach and concentrated on the story and using camera angles to give their video a slightly spooky feel. I really like how they’ve achieved an off-beat, unsettling feeling throughout.” Charlie said: “It was more straightforward than I thought. It helped that we had an idea quite early on about a girl who kept seeing her double which gave us time to try out different things and get used to the iPads.” Jade, who likes fine art photography, added: “I enjoyed the project and would like to make more videos if the chance comes up.” For Leah, assembling the video was the most interesting part of the project. “I really liked the editing process, picking the right shots to make the story interesting.” As a result of the project, Lydiard Park Academy has bought 16 iPads to provide more opportunities for students taking media courses. Trains now pulling to Taw Valley

• Free estimate at your home or work • We now complete all repairs in our workshop| • We will collect and return your car, free of charge, the same day Spartan approacing the new station past houses in Oakhurst After years of planning and thousands of hours of voluntary labour by members of the Swindon & Cricklade Railway Society, trains are now pulling into and picking up passengers at Taw Valley Halt station on the edge of Mouldon Hill Country Park, off Thamesdown Drive. Passengers can take a four mile round trip pulled by the society’s recently purchased steam locomotive Spartan, or a diesel engine, from the park, past Oakhurst to the society’s base at Blunsdon Station, then onwards to Hayes Knoll. Society vice-chairman Dave Peacey said: “It’s taken a long time to get to the point where we can

pick up passengers on the edge of the park. We’ve had to see our way through lots of planning and environmental issues, as well as a great deal of hard work such as rebuilding a bridge and laying railways lines to safe running standards. “But we can now offer everyone a better experience and we would like to invite everybody to visit us at Taw Valley or Blunsdon over the Easter Holidays.” The society is now building the line to the outskirts of Cricklade. Speedway in Swindon is entering a new era after it was revealed, on the same day Link Magazine announced sponsorship of Swindon Robins, that building work on a new Blunsdon stadium will start this summer. Speedway will continue without disruption as the new track is to be built on an adjacent site. Subject to the agreement of Swindon Council’s planning committee it should be ready for the 2016 season. Link group editor Jamie Hill said: “We’re delighted to become a Robins’ media partner. With the new stadium, this will be an exciting year for both the speedway team and Swindon Link.” The state of the art track includes the highest quality lighting and

optimal TV camera positions so that Swindon can become a preferred location for hosting international speedway meetings. Clarke Osborne, chief executive of Gaming International who own the stadium site, said: “It will definitely be done by the time the new season starts next year. The facilities will put Swindon on the map. "Our contractors are ready to start within a week of planning permission. Everyone here couldn’t be more excited.” North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson is equally pleased. “I was contacted by the Robins’ supporters when the stadium was threatened with closure. It’s wonderful that the Robins will be riding in a fantastic new facility in 12 months time.”

people of all ages from Swindon and the region have met, read, chatted, learnt, improved, skated, swum, climbed, kicked, run, cheered, as well as played for and against others. The vision by officers and councillors of Thamesdown Borough Council to create a major recrea-

tional and sporting attraction, first identified in the mid-1970s, has certainly been achieved. Now under the management of GLL, Link Centre should continue for another thirty years. Next month, we’ll carry pictures from the opening ceremony.

Emma, who worked in the salon for the last four years has decided to return to her previous career in marketing. Beth will initially offer the current nail and lash based treatments and brings with her over 5 years of beauty knowledge and expertise. Sarah said: “I wish Emma well in her future career and welcome Beth as a new addition to the salon. Exciting changes are planned for Totally Divine as Beth is a fully qualified beauty therapist so watch this space.”

Welsh wizard meets school rugby champs Former Welsh rugby international Adam Jones visited Lydiard Park Academy on 5 March to congratulate players on another successful season, which saw both Year 7 and 8 as Swindon champions. They also defeated the highly regarded St Johns School, Marlborough. Mr Jones, who retired with two international caps in 2014, talked about his training regime whilst playing and the need to lead a healthy active lifestyle to do well in any sport. Pupils were able to ask questions about playing top level rugby, posed for photos, tooks lots of selfies and asked Adam to sign rugby balls. Alex Buchalik, Lydiard Park Academy head of rugby, said: “It

was a great experience for our players to meet a professional athlete like Adam. The students got a chance to learn at first hand about the dedication to diet and fitness required to get to the top and to maintain that position. “Adam told the boys his career started with school rugby, playing with his mates and pushing on from there. He said anyone can achieve success in sport but he didn’t underestimate the amount of hard work you have to put in. “Lots of players have said they’ve been inspired by the visit. I’m sure it will have a positive effect on attitude and team spirit. Adam asked us to keep him in touch with our results.”

High Sheriff presents awards to Swindon charities

Getting ready to roll

Peter Addington strikes a pose with youngsters from Swindon Dance and members of the Bios youth project

Babes to 80 year olds were involved in this year’s Mad March Hare on 15 March in aid of of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Walkers, joggers and runners, some led by pets, turned out in their finery to tackle the 5k and 10k routes around West Swindon and Lydiard Park. The organising team want to thank everyone who took part or volunteered this year. The seven previous Mad March Hares have raised £78,000 for Breakthrough. The 2015 total will be announced later in the year. In the meantime see the gallery of images at www.swindonlink.com Search: Mad March Hare

The High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Peter Addington donned his official court dress to meet young people involved with Swindon Dance and BIOS – Settings for Life on 6 March. His awards recognise not-for-profit groups who make an effective impact in the community. Both organisations work with young people, building positive relationships and changing lives. Swindon Dance does this through dance, by providing mentoring, teaching, support and training in dance, to inspire and encourage the young people, regardless of their background. BIOS visit neighbourhoods around the town with their customised vehicle equipped with activity and sports equipment, as well as electronic games, to also support and mentor young people. Marie McCluskey, artistic director at Swindon Dance,

said “We are delighted to be chosen; it recognises the passion and dedication shown by our inspirational teachers, dance artists and team. Without them, our young people wouldn’t be developing as artists, thriving as individuals, or working towards a professional career in dance.” Chris Priddy, director of BIOS and Swindon’s Youth for Christ (SYFC), added: “It’s fantastically exciting. The team have worked incredibly hard in our first year and this award is huge recognition for that effort.” The High Sheriff said he had been tremendously impressed by Swindon Dance and the BIOS team during his year in office. “By enabling young people to make the right decisions and to aspire higher, both charities offer positive choices,” he said. ATBShop and ATBShop Skate Warehouse are hosting the first competition of its kind at Swindon’s only indoor skate park on Friday 10 April when skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX riders descend on the warehouse for thrilling competition. There are various age and ability categories to enter, offering beginners the chance to take part alongside more experienced riders who will battle it out to be crowned Urban Rider 2015 Champion. Organiser Diana Kirk said: ”We want to help change the general public’s perception of extreme sports. A lot of people will see a group of skateboarders and see a group of vandals or a BMX rider a
nuisance. “The Urban Rider Games aim to

show everyone that these young riders are in fact talented individuals who are all about their sport. There is no difference between these guys going out and riding and someone going to a gym.” Matt Drever, ATBShop team rider said: “We should support these young people and celebrate the fact that they’re doing something fit and active they enjoy.” He added that he hopes the election candidates will take time out to visit the event to meet participants and organisers. Practice for the Urban Rider Games opens from 4pm and the event will end with an after-party sponsored by Dominos Pizza. Register to take part at: atbshop.co.uk/urbanridergames

Skate park in the west delayed A skate, bmx and scooter park first considered by the West Swindon Forum in mid-2012, when a group of young people made a presentation on the need, has been delayed again. Originally the £65,000 project was proposed for Salt Way Fields in Middleleaze but residents living in the vicinity objected. A consultation in 2014 identified the open space off Rivermead Drive, opposite the Renault building was suitable, but contractors Wheelscape were not able to start because of previously agreed contracts. In March the West Swindon Forum were told by council officers that

Wheelscape could not meet the original quotation agreed over two years ago because the new location would require a lot more work to install drainage and good foundations to ensure a high quality, long lasting facility. The increased cost to build the project at £74,000 meant the scheme had to go out to tender again. Coun Nick Martin, who brought the young people to the forum three years ago said: “It’s really disappointing not to have delivered the facility they wanted. It’s sad the project got lost in the system, but it will be delivered.”

Cricklade. The World Scout Jamboree is a global gathering of Scouts and Guides from over 150 countries. It offers a unique international experience for an expected 30,000 participants who will take part in exciting activities. This year’s event is particularly poignant as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and the Scouts will have the opportunity to take part in commemorations. The Wiltshire Unit is also one of only three groups from Britain to host a Solidarity Patrol, made up of Scouts from developing countries, who will camp and participate in activities together with the UK units. The Wiltshire group has just found out that their partner Scouts will be from the Eurasia region – Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Tajikistan. In order to attend this ‘once-ina-lifetime’ event the UK Scouts

have to raise £3,500 each, a portion of which goes to support the Solidarity Patrols. Jack has been busily fundraising for over a year, participating in a variety of events and activities, including supermarket bagpacking, helping at an equestrian event and car boot sales. Cricklade Scouts donated the proceeds of a bingo evening, and Jack has received donations of cash and sale items from local organisations and businesses including Cricklade Fun Run, Shaw Village Dental Practice, and Frankie & Bennys. Crafts and cake sales, and a wildlife calendar featuring photographs by Jack’s dad have all helped to nudge the total raised closer to the target, but there is still a way to go. 7.5kg for price of 5kg A Highworth dentist will be swapping cavities for crampons when she scales a Himalayan mountain for charity this month. Magdalena Creft, of Highworth Dental Care, is travelling to Nepal to take part in the perilous expedition with the aim of reaching the summit of Island Peak. The peak stands at 6,189 metres (20,340 ft) above sea level and is only a few miles from Mount Everest. The climb is in aid of the Mt Everest Primary School in Kitandwe, Uganda and she is accompanied by experienced Himalayan climber Ian Taylor who raised money to originally open the school in 2009. She said: “I am currently practicing dentistry in Highworth Dental Care where both the practice and patients support my outdoor adventures. “I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last year and after that experience I decided to do something more challenging for myself but also to support my chosen charity. “I hope that with my hard work and preparation I can achieve my goal and help the Mt Everest Primary School to support its future.” The Ugandan primary school is one of the education projects of Fields Of Life, the organisation helping communities in East Africa with provision of quality education, clean water, health promotion and other community based projects. The school was opened in 2009 after a three year fundraising project. It consists of two blocks containing seven classrooms and a bore-hole pump supplying water to over 600 villagers. The school also doubles up as a community centre. You can donate and get updates on Magdalena’s trip on her Just Giving page at justgiving.com/magdalenakreft and there’s also a money pot in Highworth Dental Care and a donation list at David Lloyd gym where she has been training. All the sponsorship money will be donated directly to the charity.

The photograph from the Link archives taken in April 1985 features the imaginative display of daffodils planned and planted in the early 1980s by Thamesdown Council’s parks department on the embankment between Toothill and Great Western Way. It was designed to surprise and entertain passengers on trains passing along the London to Bristol railway line. Sadly Spring is Sprung can no longer be seen as hedges mask the display from railway line and trees have been allowed to grow on the embankment which obscures the view from the road.

Help make Shaw a better place A recent Parliamentary committee report says that litter is turning England into a rubbish tip with a huge increase in fly-tipping. However Shaw Residents’ Association are trying to hold back the flood in their part of West Swindon by holding litter clearance days. Association chair Kevin Fisher said: “Shaw is a pleasant area and we’re trying to keep it that way. But we need more volunteers to help with garden maintenance and litter clearance efforts in and around the Shaw Village centre.” The next tidy up days are set for 25 April, 23 May, 4 July, 19 September and 7 November. Gather in front of the Village Inn Pub at 10.30am. Litter pickers are provided, but bring appropriate tools to help with gardening. See details at www.shawresidents.org.uk

Keeley has her hair chopped for cancer charity Six year old Keeley Corcoran from Redhouse has raised £900 for the Little Princess Trust by having her blonde tresses cut off. The Bridlewood Primary School pupil donated eight and a half inches to the charity which provides free real hair wigs for children across the UK and Ireland who have lost their hair due to illness or cancer treatment. “I’m so very proud of her for raising so much money whilst doing something so selfless,” said mum Katrina Corcoran. “Admittedly I did try to put Keeley off the idea and suggested we did some fundraising instead. I know it sounds rather selfish, but I didn’t want her to regret having her hair cut off. “But she put me straight by reminding me that she’s lucky enough that her hair will grow back. Keeley told me ‘I’ve always wanted to let my hair grow so I can be like a Disney Princess, but it made me very sad when I found out so many children lose their hair when they

have cancer.’” On her JustGiving page Keeley wrote: ‘I really want to help make a poorly little girl or boy have a wig of their own.’ Her fundraising started with a £2 coin left for her by the tooth fairy. Over 50 people have donated online and her JustGiving page is still open for donations at www.justgiving. com/KeeleyC It costs £350 to make a wig and Keeley hopes to increase her total to help more children. Stranded in Stanton Having lived in Stanton Fitzwarren for 11 years writer Eleanor Petley gives us her opinion about the lack of rural buses. She’s a bit frustrated.

UNITS 19-20 KENDRICK INDUSTRIAL ESTATE SWINDON WILTS SN2 2DU

TEL: 01793 536784

In the millennium of instant communication, a global marketplace, dial-up services and high speed transport links, Stanton Fitzwarren appears to have taken a wrong turn on the road to progress. Just a few miles outside Swindon, slightly closer to Highworth, a five minute drive from Honda and with an industrial estate opposite its country park, but with no shop, post office, pub or school, Stanton Fitzwarren is the village that the bus companies have forgotten. Its single weekly service – supported by a neighbouring county council, and not by Swindon Council – was cancelled in 2011, leaving carless residents with a long trek into South Marston industrial estate to catch the nearest bus. A return trip to Swindon from the Mill Lane bus stop, pictured above, requires a five mile walk. The same is needed for a visit to the doctor, the supermarket, the cinema or a sports centre. Evenings out introduce an additional hazard, since the pavement ends slightly before the village does and the road in which residents have to walk is unlit. For part of the route to South Marston, there is the option of a bridle path – but walking this in the dark brings an additional peril, discovered only when the first street lamp of the village reveals the walker’s feet fate. It is a friendly and sociable village of some 100 houses, and a

recent get-together was hosted by the residents of what used to be Stanton’s station house. The village railway line, which ran daily services to Swindon and Highworth, was closed before the Beeching cuts of the 1960s (which saw 55 per cent of Britain’s stations and 30 per cent of its rail routes lost), and the station house has been a private home for more than 50 years. Train routes were replaced by bus services, but cheap petrol prices in the 1970s persuaded most people in rural communities to buy cars. The bus services were pruned accordingly. Then rising fuel prices, combined with insurance costs and the financial crisis, meant that cars were no longer affordable for many. People in Stanton unable to use the internet for shopping, and with no car of their own, must walk up to two miles to the nearest bus stop, and then carry their shopping back. There are both pensioners and working age people in the village for whom the lack of a bus – a basic staple in the provision of public services – is an impediment to normal life. If a Google search shows that there are bus services across the Gobi desert, and a regular bus to and from Timbuktu, then the lack of any public transport at all in the heart of one of the richest nations on Earth is something that those charged with supplying these services should be ashamed of.
