PYTHAGORAS: MATHEMATICIAN, RELIGIOUS CULT LEADER, MUSICAL THEORIST, PHILOSOPHER. JOYCE YU What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Pythagoras? a2 + b2 = c2? No worries, I am not here to talk about mathematics!

The term ‘philosopher’ - with which you are likely familiar - is a combination of two Ancient Greek words: ‘philo’ (meaning to love) and ‘sophia’ (meaning wisdom). The coining of this term has been attributed to Pythagoras, himself a prominent philosopher of Ancient Greece.

Born into a reasonably well-off life, Pythagoras was allowed the luxury to travel and study from a young age. He developed a particular interest in maths and astronomy, which would form the basis of his work later in life. Around the age of 40, he moved to Southern Italy, where he set up a commune

In its early stages, the commune allegedly had 300 members, and it is believed that the majority, if not all of the work for which Pythagoras is known was done during his time there.

This operated under Pythagoreanism, the belief system upheld by members of the commune (Pythagoreans).

Joining the commune entailed a complete lifestyle overhaul, since Pythagoreans dedicated their lives to the pursuit of maths, music, and astronomy.

Since Pythagoras believed in reincarnation - having once heard the cries of a dog on a street and believed them to be the cries of his late friend - those who lived in the commune were vegetarian by requirement. With the intention of breaking the cycle of reincarnation and being thus set free, Pythagoras and his followers maintained a harshly regimented life. These behavioural restrictions rendered the community an arguable cult.

So why did people wish to have their lives dictated by Pythagoreanism?

Pythagoras’ influence can partly be attributed to the attitudes people held towards the world around them within this period.

Season 1 of Young Royals came out in 2021 and was an instant Netflix hit. The muchanticipated season 2 lived up to all my expectations with double the drama and double the romance. The series raises issues of class, privilege, race, and identity and portrays an authentic teen experience with beautiful visuals and symbolism throughout.

aving been President since H 2015, Muhammadu Buhari is due to pass the mantle to

the next leader of the nation on February 25th 2023. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March. The winners of the election will be inaugurated on 29 May 2023.

Party primaries were held this summer and vice presidential running mates were subsequently chosen with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nominating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who chose Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate. The All Progressives Congress (APC) nominated former Governor of Lagos State Bola Tinubu who will be running with Senator Kashim Shettima. For the largely unknown Labour Party, former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi was nominated.

He selected former Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as his running mate. The New Nigeria Peoples Party nominated former Governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso who chose Pastor Isaac Idahosa as his running mate.

TINUBU Tinubu plans to continue in the footsteps of his party member, current president Buhari claiming “I will give due honour to your efforts and your legacy”. Nigeria is currently ranked 154th out of 180 nations assessed in the latest Transparency International’s 2021 Corruption Perception Index (CPI). According to him, the socio-economic challenges the country faces are deeply rooted in corruption and he plans to support existing anticorruption institutions and address underlying issues that allow corruption to thrive.”

OBI Peter Obi plans to rebuild Nigeria’s military power, promote economic growth, and enhance its technological prowess with an emphasis on improving Nigeria’s diplomatic influence in sub-regional, regional and global affairs. He claimed he would provide enough manpower for tackling the deteriorating state of national security and provide job opportunities for young people who would be recruited into the security forces.

WHOSE COFFEE ARE YOU DRINKING? TILDA WILLIAMS

Coffee is a major global commodity and part of daily consumption for many people across the world. Whether consumed at home or in cafes, world coffee production was estimated at 169.34 million bags in 2019/20 (International Coffee Organisation, 2022,) with 90% being grown in a developing country.

Therefore, millions of families are dependent on coffee production and export, and global webs of consumption also play a critical role in providing rural livelihoods.

According to the British Coffee Association (n.d,) UK consumers drink 98 million cups of coffee per day, with 76% of its value produced within the UK. And so, it is vital to explore the rise in public interest in ethical consumption and ways coffee roasters and cafes are reshaping value chains to put more money back into the peripheral economies that produce coffee – rather than the metropolitan ones that typically consume it.

While traditionally these supply chains, and the global capitalist system itself, have been associated with exploitation (West, 2010) there is a growing market for ‘ethical’, ‘sustainable’ or ‘fair’ coffee, with some even claiming that consumption is now to be counted as a form of political participation in itself (Lekakis, 2013). Single origin coffees, for example, can be marketed as fair trade, organic, or socially responsible and linked to environmental or social development projects..

This raises the question of whether premium coffee can contribute to these goals, or if they simply rely on these narratives to drive further consumption – and with it exploitation.

WHAT DOES THE CONSUMER THINK?

Reaseach carried out at Brighton cafe ‘Trading Post Coffee Roasters’ by student Eloise Smith examined how much we actually know about what we’re drinking....

HOW DO WE CHANGE THIS?

The most promising solution right now is ‘Direct Trade’. DT proposes a direct line between farmer and coffee roaster cafes.

This eliminates the inflationary measures implemented by exploitative corporations.

Advocates for DT argue that it enables fairer negotiations and relationships, ensuring quality of life and coffee.

QUESTIONING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN QUALITY AND ACCESSIBILITY IN THE ARTS. To what extent does a focus on accessibility create a linear relationship with the quality of a work of art whether visual, literary or musical?

While approaching the question, an immediate prerequisite is made evident in the need to define the ambiguous term ‘quality’ within the context of the arts - an understanding of ‘accessibility’, meanwhile, stands relatively unquestioned, the term referring to the ease with which individuals can interact with and glean enjoyment and/ or understanding from the object of discussion.

In the context of the question raised, quality should be regarded separately from the subjective nature of pleasure or beauty; a work can be intricately crafted and hold immense depth of meaning, yet appear jarring and ugly, or yawn-inducing, to the beholder.

Thus it is better to place a focus on the complexity of the process of creation and the detail to be drawn from the work on observation, and to ask whether ‘simple to understand’ must always work in tangent with ‘simple in meaning’.

As a musician, my attention is drawn immediately to the field of music; debates on music consumption are commonplace, and the frustration at ‘musical elitism’ even more so.

The issue of climate change has been circling the media and our schools for years now, and the bleak facts and figures can often feel overwhelming, leaving us with the question of how we as individuals can do our part in reducing the impacts of climate change. Here are my top four ‘sustainable swaps’ that you can make today to start reducing your environmental impact: 1. REUSABLE COTTON PADS

A simple way to reduce your daily waste and one of my favourite sustainable swaps is swapping singleuse cotton pads for reusable ones. They work exactly like regular ones but instead of binning them, you can simply place them in the wash and use them over and over.

2. SILICONE BAKING MATS

Are you an avid baker often using parchment paper? Try silicone mats instead. They come in all shapes and sizes including circular for cake tins and square for baking trays.

Just rinse them when you are finished, and they are ready to use again.

3. BEESWAX FOOD WRAPS

Beeswax food wraps are a sustainable alternative to cling-film or reusable plastic sandwich bags which are often very difficult to recycle. They are very simple to use just warm the wax with the heat from your hands and fold over food or containers. They also come in many different sizes and fun colours and patterns. They can be bought from independent sellers on Etsy so whilst saving the environment you are also benefiting a small business! If you enjoy DIY, you can even try making them at home using only five items – 100% cotton fabric, organic beeswax pellets, parchment paper (or a silicone mat!), an ironing board and an iron.

You simply melt the beeswax onto the cotton using an iron, wait for the wax to cool and they are ready to use!

4. CHANGING YOUR BANK ACCOUNT

This swap may take some more time and independent research than the ones suggested above. Many banks use your money to invest in deforestation or fossil fuel production. Signing up to a bank that does not contribute to environmental damage is an active way to make a difference. An example of ethical banking is the Co-operative Bank who have not financed the production of fossil fuels for over 20 years and have pledged not to do business with organisations who fail to implement basic human rights. Often it can be overwhelming to recognise the vast and destructive impacts of the fashion industry on the environment, particularly since the main issue resides much further up the corporate ladder in large companies responsible for mass manufacturing and extensive clothing production. Although many of these companies have made encouraging steps towards a more sustainable future, as a consumer you also have the ability to influence the demands of the market and be more mindful about your purchasing.

There are some simple changes which can reduce clothing waste and help you to collate a more sustainable wardrobe:

RE-WEAR WHAT It may seem obvious but adapting old pieces of clothing to fit a new style can be an efficient way YOU HAVE to both save money and reduce clothing consumption.

Trend cycles are a prominent part of the fashion industry which often lead to overproduction, so repurposing clothing items through sewing, cutting or just restyling is a good way to limit support for fast fashion.

REPAIR DAMAGED Similarly to re-wearing, fixing old clothing CLOTHING (e.g. adding a button or mending a hole) is an effective method for reducing clothing waste and preventing overconsumption.

BE MINDFUL OF MATERIALS When buying brand new clothing it is important

to consider the quality of fabrics both for longevity of wear and the environmental implications when the items are thrown away.

Eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics to look out for: linen, hemp, silk, bamboo, lyocell, organic wool, organic cotton.

Acknowledge that, whilst these materials themselves are compostable, when blended with synthetic fibres such as polyester the new fabric will not be compostable. The production of environmentally friendly fabrics is also heavily dependent on the manufacturer.

SELL OR DONATE To prevent clothing waste and reduce the OLD CLOTHING number of items in landfill consider donating or selling anything that you no longer need or want. There are many charity shops which welcome clothing donations and a variety of platforms which allow you to sell used clothing; Ebay, Vinted, Depop.
