Welcome from the Head

Our Sixth Form is designed to prepare your daughter not only for academic success, but for life beyond school. With exceptional teaching and personalised guidance, students develop intellectual independence, self-belief, and the curiosity to explore ideas deeply. Alongside academic rigour, we provide a structured and tailored programme of university and career preparation, supporting every student to clarify her aspirations, build her profile, and take confident steps towards the future.

Leadership is a central part of the Roedean Sixth Form experience. Whether through prefect roles, mentoring, public speaking, or entrepreneurial initiatives, students

are encouraged to lead with courage, creativity, and integrity. Pathways in areas such as Medicine, Law, Business and Economics and the Creative and Performing Arts, offer further opportunities to deepen interests and develop the skills required for future success.

All of this takes place within an empowering environment, where every girl is known, supported, and inspired. We are excited for all that lies ahead and confident that your daughter’s Sixth Form journey at Roedean will be a defining and unforgettable chapter.

‘A creative, diverse and progressive all-girls school in stunning surroundings with sensational facilities, strong academic results and a holistic and nurturing ethos.’

Providing a Balanced and Enriching Experience

The Sixth Form is an exciting and transformative stage in a student’s education, offering a wealth of opportunities to explore, grow, and thrive.

Roedean places great importance on providing a balanced and enriching experience in the Sixth Form. Students leave with a strong academic profile, complemented by independence, selfmotivation, effective communication, and a diligent approach to their work. They are intellectually stimulated well beyond the confines of their A Level studies, gaining both depth and breadth in their learning.

Each individual is supported to realise their full potential, with the balance of academic rigour and co-curricular engagement helping to develop the qualifications and skills needed for success in the next stage of life.

Roedean Sixth Formers excel across a wide range of pursuits. Whether engaging in academic enrichment, participating in sport, performing in drama or music, creating in the Art Room, or leading charity initiatives and innovative projects, they are encouraged to pursue their passions to the highest level. Many also discover new interests along the way, all while achieving outstanding academic results and becoming well-rounded, confident individuals ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.

‘Being around such driven and inspired people is an amazing academic motivator, and seeing the passion our teachers have for their subjects is infectious.’
Chaya
‘Roedean to me has always felt like a home away from home with it’s incredibly strong sense of community.’
Alfie

Empowering Academic Excellence

At Roedean, discussion and debate lie at the heart of learning, inspiring students to think critically, explore broadly, and develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

As an academic school, Roedean seeks to inspire curiosity and a love of learning in all students. The strength of teaching lies in placing discussion and debate at the heart of the learning experience. Lessons are thought-provoking and meaningful; the Sciences are as popular as the Humanities, and students thrive through collaboration, cooperation, challenge, and dialogue with one another. They are eager to think critically, learn actively, explore broadly, and develop intellectually, socially, and emotionally. This approach is reflected in their high achievement and successful progression to leading institutions in the UK and beyond.

The learning environment at Roedean encourages students to take academic risks, pursue excellence, and achieve outstanding results. This is rooted in a positive, collaborative atmosphere where mature and open relationships are fostered between students and teachers. Small class sizes and individually tailored support ensure that each student’s needs remain a top priority.

Roedean follows a linear approach to A Level study, where students choose three A Levels to study alongside a programme of lectures and electives, the Community Action Programme, an enquiry-based investigation project, and Skills for Life and Learning. All external examinations take place in the second year of Sixth Form.

‘In the Sixth Form, class sizes are relatively small, which allows for more one-to-one support. Moreover, we have such passionate teachers who empower us to push our academic limits.’
Lydia

Academic Enrichment

All students can extend their learning beyond the classroom and are encouraged to think broadly and conduct independent research. This approach is not only highly stimulating but also enriches their work within the curriculum.

Enrichment opportunities are available across all subjects at Roedean, from participating in Mathematics Challenges at various levels to undertaking subject-specific projects, entering national essay competitions, or competing in events such as the Top of the Bench Chemistry competition and the Biology Olympiads.

In Year 12, all students dedicate one hour per week to Academic Development beyond the classroom. They may choose to pursue an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), create a business through the Young Enterprise programme, or participate in elective courses such as Ethics in Action, Contemporary Critical Theory, French Film Appreciation, or Predicting the Weather. Additionally, students have the option to embark on their own Independent Learning Projects.

Many Sixth Form students opt to take the EPQ alongside their A Level subjects. This qualification allows them to explore a specific topic in depth, culminating in the creation of an artefact or an extended report. Valued at half an A Level, the EPQ is highly regarded by universities as evidence of students pursuing their academic interests well beyond the classroom.

Roedean maintains a strong academic enrichment partnership with Lancing College, which includes hosting the Oxbridge Interview Forum and an annual Scholars’ Dinner. As part of this collaboration, Roedean also hosts a highly successful Academic Symposium, UCAS Day and Oxbridge Evening each year.

Roedean Academic Lectures

The weekly programme of academic lectures, open to all girls across the school, presents an eclectic mix of fields and disciplines. These lectures are designed to challenge, extend, and broaden the intellectual horizons of Roedean students.

Some talks are delivered by visiting experts, while others are presented by students or Roedean staff members, who share their own academic passions through this platform. Recent lectures have included topics such as The Unravelling of the Versailles Treaty, The Role of Chromatography in Detection, Chinese History as Seen Through Art, Post-Modernist Thought, and Big Numbers

The diversity and breadth of the chosen topics remain consistently fascinating and inspiring.

Creative and Critical Thinking Club

This club supports students in building a strong university application profile by honing critical thinking skills, providing access to national competitions and challenges, and offering expert advice on effective interview techniques. Students also develop a portfolio of extended research and reading.

All Sixth Form students are invited to attend the weekly Creative and Critical Thinking Club.

Engaging in Co-Curricular Learning

Students are inspired and grow beyond the classroom, cultivating confidence, resilience, and leadership.

At Roedean, education is a truly holistic experience, and the Sixth Form offers a vibrant and dynamic environment where students are encouraged to engage fully in an exceptional range of co-curricular opportunities. From leadership and enterprise to the creative arts, sport, and community service, students are supported to deepen existing passions and explore new ones. These experiences are not an addition to academic life—they are an essential part of it, helping students develop confidence, resilience, and a broad skill set that prepares them to thrive in an ever-changing world.

The visual and performing arts are central to this offering, providing powerful avenues for creative expression and personal growth. Whether taking centre stage in a school production, exhibiting artwork

in a professional-standard gallery, performing at a Music Gala, or leading a student-directed play, students are empowered to showcase their talents and collaborate with others. Dance showcases, musical theatre, and student-led initiatives nurture both artistic excellence and vital life skills such as communication, teamwork, and leadership.

Equally integral is the role of sport in Sixth Form life. With a core Games programme and a dedicated weekly double lesson, students can maintain fitness, balance, and wellbeing while enjoying a wide array of options from Athletics and Yoga to Sailing, Fencing, CrossFit, Spin and HorseRiding. Talented sportswomen receive high-level coaching in Hockey, Netball, Cricket, Swimming, and Athletics, with excellent facilities and regular fixtures to support their development. At all

levels, students are encouraged to find joy in movement, build lasting friendships, and embrace the values of perseverance and teamwork.

Together, these opportunities reflect Roedean’s commitment to developing well-rounded, curious, and courageous young women, ready to lead with confidence and imagination in whatever path they choose.

Community Action Programme (CAP)

Roedean’s Community Action Programme (CAP) is a vital component of the Sixth Form experience, ensuring that all Year 12 students engage meaningfully with the wider community.

Every Wednesday afternoon, students participate in the programme, dedicating time to charity work and community service. This is not only an opportunity for students to give back but also a way for them to develop key life skills such as leadership, empathy, and teamwork.

As part of the CAP, each student is required to choose from a variety of community-focused activities. The programme features twelve different opportunities, offering a diverse range of partners and causes, allowing students to align their involvement with their personal interests and strengths. This flexibility helps ensure that every student is fully immersed in the community, with an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Examples of activities include:

• BSL in the Community: Teaching British Sign Language to improve communication and accessibility.

• Junior Roedean Academy: Supporting younger students in academic and personal development.

• Rockinghorse and Royal Alex Children’s Hospital: Fundraising and volunteering to support local children’s hospitals.

• Community Cooking: Providing meals and support to those in need.

• Sports’ Leaders: Mentoring younger students and leading sports activities.

• St Mark’s TA Support and Choir: Assisting in local schools

‘Going to the Chailey Heritage Foundation every week was such an amazing opportunity that pushed me out of my comfort zone and I’m so grateful for the experience.’
Chaya

Through the CAP, students at Roedean are empowered to make a difference, and they leave school with a deeper understanding of the social challenges that exist in their local communities. These hands-on experiences shape them into compassionate, active citizens, prepared to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

‘Higher Education and UCAS sessions every week, including support for non-UCAS university applications, helped me draw a bigger future and expand my career options.’

Encouraging Growth through Pastoral Support

Roedean nurtures a warm, inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to be their authentic self and to strive for their personal best.

Pastoral care is exceptionally strong at Roedean and lies at the heart of each student’s success. The Sixth Form marks the beginning of the transition from school to life beyond, a time when students must begin to develop greater independence, confidence, and awareness of the expectations placed upon them. With increasing freedom and responsibility, the Sixth Form experience provides a vital bridge between the structure of school and the autonomy of university life, equipping students with the essential skills for the future.

Each student is supported by a dedicated network that includes a Housemistress or Housemaster, Tutor, Head of Year, and the Director of Sixth Form. This team offers academic and pastoral guidance throughout the Sixth Form journey. As part of a diverse and global community, both boarders and day students develop strong bonds within their Houses and form

lasting friendships across year groups. Roedean nurtures a warm, inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to be their authentic self and to strive for their personal best. Sixth Form students often speak of the school’s positive atmosphere, where individuality is valued and everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Academic tutorial groups typically consist of eight to ten students, offering a close-knit environment for discussion and support. Weekly group tutorials cover a broad range of relevant topics, while regular oneto-one meetings with tutors provide individual guidance and mentoring to help students navigate Sixth Form life and achieve academic and personal success.

As senior members of the school community, Sixth Form students are expected to demonstrate high standards in work ethic, behaviour, and

appearance. They are role models for younger students and ambassadors for Roedean beyond the school gates. Respect, tolerance, and a genuine appreciation of different values and perspectives are fundamental to the ethos of the school, and every student is encouraged to contribute positively to this culture.

Pastoral care is further enriched by a comprehensive Life Skills programme, which includes topics aligned with PSHE and tailored to the needs of Sixth Form students. In addition, all students have access to the Health Centre and can make use of the school’s qualified external counsellors. The staff at Roedean understand the complexities of the transition from school to adult life and are committed to ensuring that every student leaves feeling confident, well-supported, and ready to explore the world.

Life as a Sixth Form Boarder

Our Sixth Form boarders thrive in an environment that fosters independence, academic ambition, and personal growth, all within the nurturing support of a close-knit sisterhood.

Boarding in the Sixth Form is a truly enriching experience, blending the best of traditional British boarding school values with a vibrant, forwardlooking community. Life in our beautiful cliff-top setting offers a unique blend of freedom and structure, where lifelong friendships are formed and every girl is encouraged to flourish, not just as a student, but as a confident young woman preparing for life beyond school.

In Year 12, students will board in one of our main school houses: House 1, House 2, House 3, or House 4, before moving to Keswick Hall, a central location within Keswick House, is the vibrant hub where both Year 12 and Year 13 students come together

during the day. This shared space fosters a strong sense of community and connection, uniting the Sixth Form into a cohesive, collaborative, and supportive environment.

‘What I love most about boarding at Roedean is how it feels like a home away from home. The Sixth Form Boarding facilities give us the perfect balance of independence and support. I can unwind in my own space, baking with friends in the kitchen, or access school facilities after hours to study in the library or rehearse in the music rooms. One of my favourite places to work is in silent study, where the view of the sea always brings a sense of calm and focus. Some of my best memories are the spontaneous

moments, like making hot pot with friends to celebrate Lunar New Year or going out on the weekends to watch the newest movies. What really makes Roedean special, though, is the people. The staff and housemistresses are always there if you need advice or just someone to talk to, and there’s a real sense that they care about us not just as students, but as individuals growing into ourselves. Through boarding, I’ve grown to be more confident, more independent, and ready for the next chapter at university.’ Kaitlin

Leadership Opportunities

Empowering students to cultivate essential skills like communication, collaboration, and responsibility.

Leadership is a core pillar of the Sixth Form experience at Roedean, with a wide range of opportunities designed to empower students to take initiative, develop confidence, and contribute meaningfully to the school community. These roles not only allow students to lead by example but also help to cultivate the essential skills of communication, collaboration, and responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate leaders in the world beyond school.

Students can take on formal positions such as Prefects, who support the daily running of the school and act as visible role models for younger year groups. The Peer Listeners programme provides students with the opportunity to support the wellbeing of others, offering a friendly and approachable point of contact for their peers. Sixth Formers also play a vital part in the Big

Sister programme, mentoring younger students as they transition into school life and helping to build a strong, inclusive community across year groups. Sixth Formers also have the opportunity to become Study Buddies, offering study skills, organisation, and subject-specific support to Year 9 and 10 students by arranging regular oneto-one meetings.

Student Voice is a key part of life at Roedean, and Sixth Formers are encouraged to shape the school’s direction through their involvement in the School Council, as well as through roles as Form Representatives, Charity Ambassadors, and members of the Food Committee. In the boarding community, House Committees offer further opportunities for leadership, enabling students to take an active role in shaping house events, supporting new boarders,

and fostering a positive, collaborative atmosphere.

Leadership at Roedean is not confined to titles. Students are encouraged to initiate and lead their own projects, clubs, and events—whether organising a fundraising campaign, hosting a cultural celebration, or championing sustainability initiatives. Every student is supported to explore and expand their leadership potential in a way that aligns with their interests and strengths.

These experiences allow Sixth Formers to grow in confidence and character, learning to lead with empathy, clarity, and purpose. By the time students leave Roedean, they do so not only with academic achievements, but with the mindset and maturity to make a positive difference in their communities and the wider world.

A Springboard to the Future

Empowering students to pursue their goals with greater confidence and aspiration.

A students’ education is a vital stepping stone to the rest of their lives. An outstanding Sixth Form experience involves much more than achieving top grades; it is a time for students to develop a deeper understanding of who they might become in the future. Roedean students progress to study a wide range of subjects in Higher Education and Degree Apprenticeships at leading institutions both in the UK and internationally. Expert guidance at school helps students make informed decisions, complemented by mentoring from Roedean alumnae within their chosen fields and a bespoke careers programme that includes a work experience weekend. The Roedean Sixth Form represents the important transition to the next stage of life, where students are encouraged and empowered to make their mark on the world.

Academic Results

Roedean students consistently achieve outstanding A Level results, a reflection of the school’s academic rigour, personalised support, and inspiring teaching. Our students’ success opens doors to top universities in the UK and around the world. For full details of recent examination outcomes, please visit the Results and Destinations page on the Roedean website.

‘In one-to-one meetings with the Higher Education and Careers team, I received realistic and experienced advice. This was also given with empathy, supporting a more successful university application process.’
Siyun

Mentorship

Mentorship is a valued and inspiring element of the Sixth Form experience at Roedean, offering students the opportunity to gain real-world insights and personalised guidance as they begin to shape their future pathways. A particularly meaningful aspect of this is the involvement of Old Roedeanians, who generously share their time, expertise, and experiences with current students. These alumnae, working across a wide range of industries – from Medicine, Law, and Engineering to the Creative Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Finance – act as mentors to those with similar career ambitions. Their support provides students with invaluable perspectives on university choices, career planning, and the transition to professional life. These connections not only strengthen the Roedean network across generations but also empower students to pursue their goals with greater confidence, and aspiration.

Medical Applications

Successfully applying for Medicine at university requires a highly strategic approach. In addition to the support provided for all subjects, students receive bespoke guidance to help them carefully select four medical schools whose requirements best align with their strengths, significantly increasing the likelihood of receiving an offer. Students have access to UCAT training sessions and multiple mini-interview practice opportunities throughout the Sixth Form, as well as chances to meet practising doctors and current undergraduate medical students. Those applying to Oxbridge for Medicine also benefit from extensive panel interview practice.

International University Applications

If students are considering applying to universities outside the UK, for example in North America or Asia, we will provide you with:

• Individual guidance on, and support through the relevant application process from the Head of University Admissions and Futures team.

• Opportunities to attend events hosted by admissions staff from leading international universities.

• Help and support with US college choice, standardised testing (SAT/ ACT), admissions essays, and interview practice.

• The opportunity to work with our partners if you require a more intensive approach to your application or to a specialist scholarship application.

Applications to the US are usually for a Liberal Arts and Sciences programme where courses are taken in a variety of subjects before a decision is taken at the end of the first year to focus on a main subject (known as a major). Medicine and Law are studied as postgraduate courses in the US, so cannot be applied for directly from school.

Oxbridge Applications

Students considering applying to Oxbridge benefit from high-quality, specialised guidance throughout the process. Additional support is provided for entrance tests, interview preparation, and personal statement writing. The extensive Old Roedeanian network plays a vital role, with alumnae returning to share insights and demystify the application process, while trips to the Oxford and Cambridge campuses help bring the experience to life.

Interview preparation and mock interviews are offered with a variety of teachers and professionals, alongside access to mock admissions tests provided by external Oxbridge specialists. Personal statement support and regular one-to-one meetings with the Futures Team ensure that students receive tailored advice. Academic progress during Year 12 is carefully monitored and discussed with each student, providing a clear understanding of areas to focus on in order to achieve their goals. Additionally, the Assistant Head: Futures runs a weekly Early Applicants’ Club within the co-curricular programme to provide ongoing and targeted support for all students pursuing Oxbridge applications.

Roedean Futures and Career Office Guidance

Careers and university guidance begins early to ensure that students can make informed decisions about their future well in advance. Students receive periodic careers and university advice as part of the Life Skills Programme, including a dedicated intensive programme in the summer term of Year 12, alongside ongoing discussions with tutors and one-to-one meetings with the Futures team. A bespoke careers programme further supports students through workshops, interactive immersive sessions, and opportunities to consult with an independent careers advisor.

Information and guidance are provided in a variety of ways, including but not limited to:

• Guidance on the UCAS process from the Futures Team.

• Information sessions on higher-level apprenticeships, sponsored degrees, and graduate employability.

• Access to the Roedean Progression Guide series, offering detailed advice at each stage of the application process.

• Participation in The Careers School, Roedean’s bespoke careers guidance programme.

• Individualised support and tailored opportunities to help develop a cohesive and competitive application for each student’s chosen pathway.

• Mentorship and shadowing opportunities across a range of industries and sectors through Roedean’s extensive professional network.

• Personal statement workshops featuring subject-specific resources and guidance.

• Subject-specific university preparation classes run by individual academic departments.

• Talks from representatives of leading UK and international universities.

• Support with university interview preparation, including practice interviews and sessions focused on interview skills and communication techniques.

• Opportunities to attend Open Day visits at universities and colleges.

• Support sessions covering student finance and accommodation.

• Information sessions for parents, who are also encouraged to contact the Director of Sixth Form and Futures Team for advice.

• One-to-one meetings to discuss Higher Education and career plans with the Director of Sixth Form or Assistant Head: Futures.

‘Being able to help children with complex neurodisabilities every week in Chailey for my CAP was one of my highlights of Sixth Form life at Roedean.’
