U15A Win the Lingfield Netball Tournament

We have enjoyed the most wonderful sunsets this week, and I am pleased that the cold weather has certainly not dampened anyone’s spirits. The Year 13s, 12s, and 11s have all approached their assessments with impressive focus and positivity. I am sure that going through this process and revising steadily will have a highly beneficial impact going forward – well done!

The House competition, led by the Art Department, was great fun, and it was amazing to see what the girls managed to pull together, using nothing more than bin bags and Sellotape – well done to House 4 who showed the most creativity and were the overall winners.

This has been an amazing week of sport, with lots of fixtures, and some fantastic results. I am really pleased that’s so many girls are representing the School, and that they are enjoying real success against a range of schools, including Christ’s Hospital, Hurst, and Ardingly – congratulations to all the players and to the PE Department.

Brighton Fringe Performers

On Friday, students gathered in their houses to create spectacular fashion designs with only coloured bin bags and Sellotape.

I was amazed by the creativity on display, and even more impressed by the students who took to the stage to show off their creations.

All four Houses were awarded points by our wonderful judges, Mr De Costa and Miss Orrells, and a special thank you has to go to Mr Bond who demonstrated to our models how to walk on the catwalk!

Success for Year 12s in the Ritangle Competition Last term, several Year 12s signed up to participate in the Ritangle competition run by the MEI. This devilishly difficult competition requires excellent problem-solving skills, perseverance, and lateral thinking.

Two of our teams managed to answer every problem correctly in the first two stages, and, using the clues they had picked up along the way, solved a tricky puzzle to reach the third stage.

One of these teams included Julia, who did fantastically well to get to this stage as she was working alone. The team, captained by Seraphe, received a special mention as Commendable on the Ritangle website for their answer to the third stage.

Special congratulations therefore go to Seraphe, Ashley, Rene, and Tamanna. Well done to all who took part, and we look forward to participating again next year.

Chapel – Good Memory Day Miss Hart led this week's Chapel service, exploring the theme of memory: Today, 19 January, marks ‘Good Memory Day’.

The human brain is complex and unique, and memory continues to be part of the brain that is difficult to understand. Scientists have been studying the brain and memory for many decades, making some progress, but still having a long way to go.

Good Memory Day was established to encourage people to set aside time to think positive thoughts that are related to events of the past. Whether it’s remembering the delightful day that you spent on holiday with family, or savouring the memory of the day your house team won House Hockey.

And although this day can be celebrated just in the name of fun, it’s also good to know that the recall of positive memories can actually be good for you. In fact, some research has shown that regularly recalling positive memories may have the power to improve mood, even at people’s lowest.

Music can also trigger memories instantly. In Nicholas Spark’s novel ‘The Notebook’ and film that followed of the same name, the plot follows Noah and Allie as husband and wife.

Allie suffers from Alzheimer’s and struggles to recall any memories of their marriage or children. However, when Allie plays the piano, she immediately remembers which keys to press, and wonderful memories come flooding back to her.

We are very lucky at Roedean to have many ‘good memories’ from Old Roedeanians archived in several ways. The book, Memories of Roedean – The First 100 Years’, published in 1998, documents memories of our school. Now I must admit, not all of these are positive – with mention of ‘icicles in bedrooms’, ‘fearfully silent corridors’, or being ‘punished for taking an extra bath’, however the majority of these memories are extremely positive, with old girls looking back on their time at school with great fondness.

Silver Medals for Luciana Congratulations to Luciana (Yr8), who had an exciting weekend at the ISTD Medallist Series competition in Ballroom & Latin dance. She competed in a range of categories, and was a silver medallist in all her dances, including couples Cha Cha for 16-25 year olds – she did brilliantly, but her achievement is all the more impressive because she was competing against much older dancers. Well done!

Angela Jeffries attended Roedean between 1954-57. She recalls – ‘It was an unforgettable experience being perched on the cliff at Roedeanexposed to healthy winds and sea air and seeing the wonderful sunsets and and beautiful seascapes. Sonia Wild attended Roedean between 1932-1938. She recalls – ‘An excellent thing I remember about Roedean is that it did not spend so much time in trying to teach the ‘right answer’ as it did in encouraging you to say what you thought was right and giving reasons for it.’

When I was at school, we attended Chapel twice a week and, looking back, I can still strangely recall all the words to every John Rutter anthem we learnt in Chapel choir and also the colours of the sun shining through the stained glass window. Chapel also provided a quiet time in my busy week dashing from lessons to activities – something which remains unchanged now, and i hope that this is the same for you.

Nature Wreaths in HHH There is a new HHH rotation this year for Year 7, looking at Wellbeing Outdoors. We spend our lessons outdoors, taking part in activities such as meditating, making clay pots, and sewing lavender bags.

This week, the girls in Aster group were making nature wreaths and produced some beautiful work.

This Week in Boarding...

The cold weather continues along the south coast of England, but that doesn't stop our boarders from getting creative, and having lots of fun!

Houses enjoyed getting colourful, and competitive, for House Art, in which there was an array of stylish fashion items created out of bin bags, in House colours, of course!

Some even came with accessories!

Huge congratulations go to House 4, who took home the prize.

House 1 learnt how to do Dutch braids, and practised on each other.

Girls also made cinnamon rolls, yummy! Others enjoyed a Taylor Swift quiz, hosted by Miss Studdart.

It also wouldn't be House 1 without their classic Bingo night! In true January spirit, House 1 boarders have taken to the gym and have loved exercising together!

House 2 enjoyed some healthy smoothie bowls. Full of fruit, these went down a treat! Girls also devoured a lovely and warm crumble! Which topping would you choose – ice cream, squirty cream, or custard?

House 3 hosted a gingerbread decorating competition, each adopting a different theme, including St Patrick's Day and Pancake Day – whose do you think is the best?

House 4 opened a pizzeria and enjoyed an International evening with Italian cuisine. The International evening was so popular, it is becoming a regular feature and girls enjoyed decorating dragon masks while eating delicious spring rolls to celebrate the Chinese culture. Despite the ice, and chilly mornings, some boarders were excited to have ice cream, in proper cones!

Year 11s have been working hard on their mock exams this week and have been supported by their fellow boarders. Girls in House 1 indulged in some "good luck" cake, while Year 7 and 8s made "good luck" cards for the Year 11s in House 4.

Year 8 Lino Prints

Netball vs Burgess Hill

Look at these wonderful lino-printed bugs, made

by Year 8 students. The work is relief ink on collage, inspired by their observational drawings of insects and their collages. Well done!

U12D The U12D team won the first fixture of the term in what was also, for some, their first ever netball match. Roedean took an early lead, but the teams were evenly matched and goals were difficult to come by in the second quarter.

Roedean extended their lead to 5-2 in the third, but Burgess Hill fought back and the game ended a close 6-4. The girls all played thier part, and stand out performances came from Dixie in defence and Soraya, both shooting and with her movement in and around the D.

Mr Smethurst

U12C Comeback Queens The U12C team played against Burgess Hill in their first fixture of the term. On a very cold evening at Roedean and after a bit of a wait, the game got underway. We went 4-2 down in the first quarter, needing to get the sharpness back in the second quarter. We managed to keep the gap at 2 in the second and looked like improving as the match went on. In the third, it was a tight affair, with us defending extremely well and not letting Burgess Hill score a single point and us closing the gap to one point. In the final quarter, we stormed back from a 3-point difference to draw the match with 30 seconds to play, even having an opportunity to win it in the final few seconds. It was a great game, ending 9-9!

U13B/C

Mr Campleman

The U13 B&C Netball team played as a combined team against Burgess Hill on Wednesday. With the temperatures low, the opposition’s courts were frozen and not playable, so they brought a team to play against both our B and C teams in C-Hall. To add to the experience, they also got stuck in traffic, which meant our game didn’t start until 5:30pm. With just 45 minutes to play, we decided to play five 8-minute periods, allowing lots of rotations and court time for the Roedean girls.

After a competitive first period, with lots of turnovers all over the court but few shooting opportunities, the score was 1-1. The second period was equally thrilling and meant we went into the final three still at 1-1. It wasn’t until the third and fourth that the team found their rhythm and started to pull away. Eva, Ezzie, Alex, and Martha were all shooting well, and helped to pull us to 7-2 going into the final session. Only one more goal was scored in the final period, and we came away 8-2 winners.

It was great to see so many players playing well together and a number even playing in new positions.

Netball vs Dorset House School U13Cs Down Dynamic Dorset House

U12A On Wednesday 17 January, the U12A team played Dorset House U13A team. We only took seven players due to sickness.

We started strongly, leading the quarter 7 goals to 4. With confidence, we took to the court but started to make some mistakes. We threw the ball away a few times, rushing, and launching the ball to the sideline or the other team. Dorset House managed to close the gap a bit, finishing for half time 14-10 to us.

The second half of the game was better, with excellent turnovers from our players. The shooters were on fire! We finished the game 23-19.

Player of the Match was awarded to Maddie, and my Coach's Player goes to Betsy. She did

an increible job with turning over the ball and maintaining great speed throughout the game.

Thank you to Hester for stepping up and helping the A team out.

The U13Cs travelled to Dorset House for a match which is always tight between the two schools, and this time was no different, with 1-point in it at the end. After a good warm-up in cold conditions, the aim was to start well to get into the match, which unfortunately didn't happen, and we went down by 3 points. After a refocus and adjustment of our goals and intensity, the girls responded in the 2nd quarter, winning it 7-6.

The next quarter was crucial to pull a lead away, but Dorset House maintained possession well and kept pulling us back as we got ahead. Going into the final quarter, we were down by 1 point and needed an immense quarter of Netball. The quarter started fantastically well, with Rosa and Beth scoring 4 uncontested points and taking a 3 point lead. But, Dorset House responded, hitting back with two goals and looking stronger as the quarter went on. Bea defended like a spartan in the D, denying the Dorset House GS over and over, along with her defensive teammates, and this ensured the we maintained our 1 point lead and took the win 14-13.

U13F Battle vs Brighton College E&F Team In a triangular fixture versus Brighton College U13 E/F, our team performed well and battled to achieve a positive result.

Against their F team, the attack ruled the roost, and the Roedean squad clearly had the upper hand against their cross-city opponents. Sofiia and Lucia played incredibly well on the attacking side, with Flo and Hazel playing well on the defensive side. The result for the two quarters was 9-6 – it was an even game, but the team played well.

Playing their E team, the team struggled against a quicker opposition, making mistakes they didn't do versus the other BC team. Our defence kept us within the game, and stood strong, generating interceptions and getting rebounds.

The team were struggling going up the court into the attacking phase of court.

We are already looking forward to our next game on 31 January.

Netball vs Ardingly

Whitehawk FC Partnership We are lucky enough to have Whitehawk Women's Football Club so local to the school. The ladies' first team currently plays in the SCWGFL Premier Division. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Mr Foggoa.

U13D The U13D team played out a thrilling 15-15 draw at Ardingly in a game that was end to end from start to finish.

Roedean started the game stronger and were dominant in the first quarter, but Ardingly came back and had the best of the following two quarters. The fourth was nip and tuck, before a final score from Zaina brought the scores level with one minute remaining!

Bella was outstanding at Centre, and Joy changed the game when she moved to GK. However, this was a real team effort and credit should go to every player.

Mr Smethurst

No Goals Conceded for the U12Ds! Roedean’s U12D team had a chilly match against Ardingly’s U13Ds on Wednesday, with energy high from the off from both sides. Dixie did an excellent job as our Captain in boosting the team’s confidence, and we pulled away in the first quarter with 2 goals to 0.

The second quarter was tightly contested, with only a single goal scored, but from the second half of the game our Ds really came into their own. The communication on court was excellent, our marking was tight and interceptions were being made from everywhere. Soraya did not miss with her shooting, working well with Meredith in the D to get in goal after goal.

Dixie had some brilliant interceptions, and was excellent at disrupting the play and bringing it back into our favour. Ottie also did a great job of getting into advantageous spaces to pass the ball on to our shooters, and overall the team really came together to support each other.

It was lovely to see everyone work so hard, and the game finished at 10-0 with a convincing win.

It was an exciting and fast-paced match, and the whole team was very excited to celebrate with a delicious match tea of doughnuts.

Netball vs Lingfield U12A On Monday 15 January, the U12A team faced Lingfield. It took a little time to get into the quarter, but, once the flow of the game was in full swing, we scored 7 confident goals and only conceded 2.

The 2nd quarter was our best. Our attacking movement was strong where we demonstrated some excellent netball placing the ball in front of the player to run onto. In this quarter, Isabella was dominating the circle, scoring goal after goal. This quarter finished on 16-2 to Roedean.

The second half of the game was very different.

Our ball placement was not on form, which allowed Lingfield to get back into the game. We lost a bit of confidence and heads went down.

Luckily, we had a strong lead and at the end of the 3rd quarter the score was 19-7 to us.

The final quarter was better. We showed excellent teamwork, helping to turn the ball over, look after it, and take it to goal. Lingfield kept up their energy and brought us a tough 12 minutes, but we excelled at our shots and finished the game 26-12. Maddie, who was playing centre, was voted Player of the Match. My Player of the Match has got to go to Isabella for her fantastic goals. She has been practising at lunch time/ any spare time she has, and it really paid off.

U15A Win the Lingfield Netball Tournament On Thursday 11 January, the U15A team attended the Lingfield netball tournament.

The first school we faced was Benenden. As you can imagine, it was a little on the cold side, so our first game was a bit rusty. We took a strong lead at the beginning of the match, but after Benenden warmed up, they came back strongly. The final score was 12-10 to Roedean.

Our second game was against Sackville. Due to winning this game 19-6, we managed to try out a few variations which allowed us to be prepared for the semifinals.

In the semifinals, we met Guilford High School.

This was a tough game at the start, where we were only leading by 1 goal. After some strong coaching feedback, Roedean dug deep and pulled out all the tricks. The defence tightened up on the 6ft tall GS, attacking players balanced out the court nicely, and every goal was going in. We left the court with a comfortable 13-7 win.

Our final was against Royal Russell. We spent a few of the gaps watching their team to see what we needed to bring to the court in order to shut down the flow of their game. The first half was pretty even with regard to possession of the ball. Once we got a lead in the score, we settled in nicely to the flow of how we like to play. We were placing the ball correctly into the D, setting up our shooters in a good position for a shot. The defence managed to turn over the ball on most of their centre passes, allowing us to have another chance at goal. The final score was 13-5 to Roedean. The girls were extremely pleased with the result and extra happy that we were able to bring back the shield for the second year in a row.

A big shout out goes to Izzy and Amalie from Year 9, who stepped up and had an excellent day playing with the U15s.

Netball Victory vs Christ's Hospital U14A On Saturday, the U14A netballers had a wonderful game against Christ’s Hospital’s U15As. After struggling in the first two quarters in our last match against Brighton Girls in the Sussex Cup, the girls knew they needed to start strongly to get ahead early. After a good warm-up, they started well, making turnovers off every opposition's centre and converting each of their own. They did this for two quarters leaving the score 25-0 at half-time.

After some excellent performances in their normal positions, it was time to change the positions to challenge the girls to think differently; the shooters were learning to feed the circle and the mid-court trialling movement in the D and shooting. They did well in these new roles and still managed to successfully make turnovers and convert their centre passes. The final score was 40-4. Well done to Poppy for receiving the opposition's MVP.

U14Bs Bounce Back The U14B's were looking to bounce back from their clash against Brighton College the previous week. They had a good week of training and set the tone early with an impressive 10-4 first quarter. They maintained a good intensity throughout the match and never let Christ's Hospital settle, intercepting well in the midfield was Flo, Iris and Ines. Sophie and Bella kept the scoreboard ticking over and with an impressive final quarter where Sophie didn't miss one shot, the match ended 25-5. The team looking to continuing to improve before the next match against Ardingly!

U15D Narrowly Lose 4-3 Roedean’s U15D team narrowly missed out on a win against Christ’s Hospital this weekend. Down two goals in the first quarter, the team fought hard to regain the deficit in the second. By half-time, there was everything to play for. Despite a depleted U15 team, Claudia, Molly, and Lola played up an age-group to help their fellow Roedeanians. The third quarter passed with one Roedean goal to add to the drama. The stage was set for a thrilling last ten minutes. Christ’s Hospital fought hard to score two goals in the last quarter. In a low-scoring game, the goals were crucial for their win.

U15E

U15E Victory It was fantastic to see so many talented girls enjoying playing Netball on Saturday. The U15E team were an example of just that. They worked hard from the offset, arriving before their meet time, leading their warm-up with enthusiasm, and setting themselves individual goals for each quarter.

Abigail led the team from the centre court, supporting and encouraging her teammates. Victoria and Claire scored 3 goals in the first quarter and 5 in the second, before we switched positions at half-time. Melissa, although used to playing centre, enjoyed trying wing attack and goalkeeper. Athena made some outstanding interceptions, achieving her personalised target, and Victoria had a go at goalkeeper even though she had never played the position before. Sarah was a force to be reckoned with in defence, and she kept spirits high, even when it was cold. A huge well done to the whole team, who stayed focused throughout, gave the game 100%, and won with grace.

U16C The U16C team produced an excellent performance to win 19-10 at Christ’s Hospital.

After a cagey opening, with the game wellcontested in the centre third, Roedean began to score. Dot and Martha showed great movement and accuracy, and were well supplied

by Izzy, Maya, and Megan. Indigo and Freya were assertive off the ball, and showed good positional awareness, which allowed CH attacks to be defended and Roedean attacks to be launched.

This was an excellent game, played in great spirit by both teams.

Netball Victory vs Christ's Hospital U15B v Christ's Hospital U16B The U15Bs took on Christ's Hospital U16B on Saturday away. They started off well, winning the first quarter 5-2. They continued to push on and extended their lead, with the score at half-time being 11-4. The team linked up well and put excellent defensive pressure on CH which paid off, allowing us to make multiple intercepts. The final score was 19-12 to Roedean. Well done to all who played, and congratulations to Tiah who received Coach's Player.

U16A Victory The U16A National Schools squad played Christ's Hospital 1st team this Saturday, to help the team gel and build in preparation for the National Schools on 3 February.

U16D

U16D Win in a Thriller

We started strongly, taking turnover after turnover in defence and driving through the court at speed, taking the ball to goal. There was very accurate shooting throughout the game, which helped capitalise off all turnovers.

Despite the cold, the players continued to work hard and kept pushing until the final whistle. It was an excellent performance from all, and the final score was 36-15 to Roedean.

In a fantastic fixture, the U16D team travelled to Christ's Hospital in good spirits and excited for the game.

The first half started as a cagey affair, with lots of mistakes and turnovers.

When CH got through the midcourt, our defence of Veronica and Amy stood strong, creating lots of interceptions and turnovers. Additionally, the defence made numerous important rebounds, which enabled a counter through the court. At half time, the score was 6-6.

At half time, the team fancied their chances and knew if they played well they could get the win. The second half started, which was close again, and the girls were taking control of in this quarter by going into Quarter 4 with a two goal lead.

CH stepped up in the last quarter and scored three early goals, after which the team bounced back well. The mid-court and attackers, Amelia, Tilly, and Holly, took control of the match, scoring the last four goals of the game, ending in a 11-8 victory.

Shooting Success for the U18Bs! Roedean’s U18B team took on Christ's Hospital away this weekend in a very tightly contested netball game. The first quarter started neck and neck, with both teams finishing on 1-1 due to strong defence on both sides.

U15A

However, from the second quarter onwards, the team really came into their own, improving their communication on court and staying tighter onto the players they were marking. Olivia did an excellent job as Captain, providing helpful insight for the team between quarters and working tirelessly as WA and later C to move the ball down to our shooters. Onose and Holly held tight in defence, getting numerous interceptions and applying great pressure on their attackers.

U15A vs Christ's Hospital U16A This week, a mixed team of U15 and U16 played against Christ’s Hospital's U16A team. This was a tough game, which tested our ability to quickly gel, play slightly out of position, and have no subs.

Our first quarter was very tight, only losing by one. Going into the second quarter, we struggled to gain possession of the ball just before they entered the circle, and they often scored.

The final quarter was particularly tricky, and by this point everyone’s hands (including the opposition) were about to fall off!

By the final quarter, our shooters Mila and Tallulah really came into their own, with some incredible long shots taken from near the top of the D securing the team’s victory. The game finished 9-6, with Tallulah and Onose selected as attacking and defensive Players of the Match respectively. It was a very exciting match with amazing effort from every single player, ending in a well-deserved win. Congratulations U18Bs – what a result!

Netball vs Hurst U12C vs Hurst U12Es This was a very competitive match and very evenly matched. Both teams were fighting for the ball to the very end, and it could have gone either way. We started off well, defending hard all the way down the court and turning the ball over frequently.

Anna at GK and Amara at GD were doing a brilliant job of putting pressure on the shooters, and often tipping the ball out or intercepting it. Perla did some incredible interceptions too, she was reading their passes well and then timing her interception beautifully. Shahdi was running her legs off trying to get free against a very good Hurst centre. She did well at moving into space and trying to lose her player. First quarter score was 1-0 to them.

We were determined to get more goals in the second, and the ball hadn’t made it down to our attacking circle much, but we created more chances this quarter. Cora at GS and Gracie at GA were on fire! Their shots were so accurate, they were barely missing. Hurst sunk a few too though, and it was still neck and neck, 3-2 to them.

Jess then switched to centre and slotted in well – she was making lovely drives into space, and bringing the ball down the court well. We started to bring it back.

Everyone was gelling together and we started to fight back, and we went up 6-3 this quarter! Gracie and Cora were working as a pair in the D, doing lovely little pop passes to each other to get close to shoot. We thought we had it in the bag, but Hurst weren’t going to give it to us that easy. They turned the ball over four times in a row, shock, horror, they went up by 3, and we were now down. It was a last ditch attempt to try and get a draw and we did get 2 more goals in the last minute to bring it to 9-8, but then time ran out and that was the final score. What a match though, they played amazingly!

U13A at the Hurst Tournament On a very cold Wednesday, the U13A team travelled to Hurst for their annual tournament.

Despite having new combinations out on court, the girls held their own in the group stage, taking wins against Cottesmore and Windlesham, and a draw versus Great Walstead.

After the group stages, we sat in the top 2 out of 6 in our group, which put us into the cup group for the second round. The girls linked up well and pressured throughout the court, forcing lots of turnovers. Unfortunately, we struggled in this pool, but still secured 6th out of 18 schools, which the team should be very proud of. I was so impressed with the intensity, positivity and coachability of the squad. They gave 100% to every match and with big smiles on their faces.

Playing Hockey is one of Isabelle's passions.

During the festive break, she represented the U12A Knole Park girls' hockey team. After an extremely competitive draw, the team won the Surbiton Tony Smith U13 Plate Championships. They beat Epsom HC in the semis and Sevenoaks HC in the final.

Parent Year 12 & 13

Roedean Swimmers at a Brighton Friendly Last week, Roedean escaped the cold weather of the cliffs to the warmth of Brighton College pool to attend our first swimming gala of 2024.

We had races across the junior, inter, and senior categories, with a squadron to end the evening. Holly and Matilda kicked off the senior 100m IM. Next were the 4x50m relays for all categories, where we had a strong representation. Maisa swam two legs of the junior relay with Tilly and Farah. In the inters, we had Kat, Matilda, Evelyn, and Charlize, who swam well, making for a competitive race. Alice,

In the other races, notable performances came from Maisa, who placed first in the junior backstroke and breaststroke. Finya came first and Alice came 2nd in the senior 100m freestyle, which was a great result! With lots of galas to come in 2024, we are excited for what’s to come… Well done, team Roedean!
