Roedean's Fringe Festival Concert

Head’s Introduction

Farewell to the Year 13s! We will have a chance for a proper goodbye at Speech Day on 29 June, but today is their last official day. What a fantastic year-group, with such a broad range of skills and talents! It was great to see them leading Leavers’ Chapel and taking those iconic photos in the Front Quad. Good luck for the coming weeks!

Year 11 also held a wonderful Assembly yesterday to round off the year. They presented some brilliant performances for each other, they thanked each of their tutors, picking out a few key memories from the year, and the Year 11 tutors shared their thoughts too, and it was all presided over by Mrs Shrubsole. It was a moving celebration of the year! I wish you all good luck for your exams.

Congratulations to everyone who was involved in the Fringe Festival Concert last Friday – it was outstanding! Well done to our amazing soloists, Anamika, Bronwen, Eva, Alyssa, and Rachel – they all played with such skill and panache. Well done also to everyone in the Orchestras, the Choir, and to Alissandra, Alma, Ella, Galina and Niamh, who sang solo elements in Carmina Burana. To have almost a quarter of the School performing in the concert was breath-taking. I am grateful to Mr Rous and Ms Bartlette for masterminding this huge concert, and for giving so many musicians and singers the opportunity to perform – congratulations!

Thank you to the Physics Department who took a group of students to Goodwood last weekend to race our F24 electric car.

The students clearly had a wonderful time racing on the famous track against many other schools. All of their skills were put to the test when there were some technical issues to resolve, but they rose to this challenge, and clearly had a very rewarding day!

I am delighted to hear that we have received news of some excellent results this week in the Junior Maths Challenge – the girls achieved top results, including 7 Gold Awards.

Congratulations also to those who took LAMDA exams last term – they have been awarded a whole string of distinctions, which is excellent. Well done, and thank you to all my colleagues who have prepared the girls for the examinations and challenges.

There have been a huge number of fixtures going on this week, as you will see in this Review, in Cricket, Athletics, Football, and Tennis, and there was even a Netball fixture last weekend against an OR team – it is great to see so many students out on the fields enjoying sports, and playing so well against other schools. Well done, and thank you to the Sports Department.

I hope that you all enjoy a lovely weekend, and particular good luck to the huge number of girls heading out on their Bronze and Silver DofE expeditions this weekend!

Unsung heroes in the spotlight Each week, many wonderful things happen at Roedean, about which many in the school are perhaps unaware; this section of the weekly review is dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’, in order to draw our attention to these people and remind us that our community is special.

Springtime Fun in House 4 The House 4 girls are loving the warmer weather, being outside in the sunshine, practising acrobatic routines, playing frisbee with friends, and making daisy chains! We also enjoyed a weekend treat of yummy scones with jam, cream, and fresh strawberries!

Roedean's Fringe Festival Concert Last Friday’s concert was a momentous way to celebrate the return to Roedean of the Brighton Fringe Festival event, which has always been a highlight of the year.

The standard of the solo performances was phenomenal, both in their technical and musical mastery. Anamika and Bronwen (Yr13) opened the concert with a lively first movement for Piccolo Trumpets by Vivaldi. The interplay between the strings and soloists was playful and uplifting, and both soloists performed with astounding accuracy and character. Eva (Yr13) then stepped from leading the orchestra on the Violin to performing a solo on the Viola. She played Élégie by Glazunov, performed with the Strings. Eva captured the ever-changing moods throughout, with a rich and deep tone on the instrument – this was an incredibly musical and sensitive performance.

Next to the stage was Alyssa (Yr13) and her accordion, and this was a dynamic performance of Piazzolla's Libertango, packed with energy and spirit. It made the audience want to jump up and dance. To finish the first half, the orchestra accompanied Rachel (Yr9) in the first movement of Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole. This was a virtuosic performance on the Violin, filled with spectacular moments from rich Iberian romance, Spanish rhythms, and climactic runs. Rachel played with passion and superb technique.

Thank you to the Catering Team for a superb interval, with Pimm’s and chocolate-covered strawberries!

After the interval, the Orchestra was joined by the Choir and guest singers to perform Carmina Burana. This mighty work is a challenge for

any group, and our Choir and Orchestra rose to the occasion and performed with aplomb. Our guest bass-baritone, Christopher Foster, gave us dramatic and impassioned renditions of the solo movements, and there were outstanding vocal solos from our students: Alissandra, Niamh, Galina, Ella, and Alma all demonstrated incredible range, beauty, and poise.

Congratulations also to the small group of 'Ragazzi' from Year 7, who held their nerve to sing their completely unaccompanied interjections.

We hope that those of you who joined us enjoyed it as much as we did, and we look forward to seeing you at our next few recitals.

'Alt hough some of our mem bers have already got a good grasp of suturing, most of them are completely new to it. Many struggled with the problem of the skin ripping apart as the suture is too close to the incision, but after some guidance and several times of practice, they have improved significantly. It's fascinat ing to witness our mem bers making notable progress in such a short matter of time, cons idering how new they are to suturing.'

Roedean at the Brighton Summit 'Last Friday, I had the opportunity to attend the ‘Brighton Summit: Unite’ event at Sussex University with two other Year 12 Roedean students. We began the day networking with some of the business owners, followed by an inspiring speech by Rachel Watkyn, a business owner who appeared on the TV show Dragons Den. She spoke about the problems life continued to throw at her from a young age, and her speech inspired and motivated me to pursue my ambitions, even when it seems a struggle.

In the first year of Roedean facilitating and supporting the strength and conditioning programme to continue the all-round health and fitness of the girls, it has been great to see the amount of students participating in co-curricular timetable sessions with Mr Meardon, and Mr Alexander-Buckley.

Mr Meardon has been working hard to renovate the gym by creating more floor space for girls to practise lifting techniques and complete group sessions together. Furthermore, the gym has been supplied with high-quality bumper plates to be used on the olympic bar for key lifts.

Mr Meardon is hoping to continue the uptake through the coming term and into the new academic year. With the department addition of Mr Meardon, all students will be supported by a highly-qualified individual who will be able to provide coaching and direction for the girls to achieve their goals within health, fitness, and sport.

The headline of new equipment added is the multipurpose squat rack that has been added. This squat rack will allow the girls to practise their lifting ability, whilst using the bar in a safe area. This renovation is planned to continue throughout the coming summer

Outstanding Junior Maths Challenge Results The Junior Maths Challenge results are in! – congratulations to everyone who took part.

Overall, seven students achieved Gold awards, twelve achieved Silver, and 21 were awarded Bronze awards. Well done in particular to Daisy (Yr8), who scored a remarkable 111, and Angelina (Yr7), who was the third highest scorer of all those who entered from Roedean.

memorable feature of my day was hearing Floella Benjamin, an actress, TV presenter, writer, producer, businesswoman, campaigner and politician, speak about the issues children and women face, as well as diversity and equality.

This stimulated me to want to speak up and fight against the issues she and many other females face when growing up. Her speech was so moving and exhilarating.

The whole day provided me with the necessary experience and skills to begin my career, as I gained advice and learnt from the many inspirational speakers and entrepreneurs who attended. ‘Brighton Summit’ was an engaging, captivating and compelling event which I am so appreciative to have had the opportunity to attend.' – Emma (Yr12)

Roedean's F24 Car at Goodwood Last Sunday, our students competed against over 80 other schools, colleges, and universities, racing our F24 electric car on the Goodwood race track.

Ahead of Goodwood at the weekend, the girls gave the F24 car its essential MOT and planned to test drive it on the tennis courts. However, it failed. With a lack of power to the motor, diagnostics from Mr Rippingale identified a fault in the relay unit. Roedean Racers, undeterred by the 6:45am Sunday departure and lack of working vehicle, set off determined to compete.

On arrival to the Paddock, the students and Mr Ferry were quick to test the vehicle to help isolate and confirm the issue. This trouble-shooting time gave them the opportunity to take a lap and observe the other competitors' car designs and key features, building a catalogue of ideas for us to make future iterations, many of which Janice was jotting down in her notebook. Through the girls' determination and the help and generosity from regular competitors and event ambassadors, we were able to find the components we needed to compete.

The next up to race were those in the 16 and under category. Alisa and Theta were our first two racers. Unfortunately, due to the intense sunshine and overheating of our motor, the car was collected from the track prematurely. This, alongside us missing the morning practice and 1st race, meant that Cheryl, Rose, Kaitlin, and Cathy were not able to race the car, which was a real shame. We would like to say a massive thank you to them in particular, for their commitment and passion improvements to the car: through the day – thankfully, our future plans to return to this and seek other events means that their names will be first up next time!

After changing our throttle to a push power system, the girls were rehearsing for change-overs ready for the race pit. Before we were able to start however, the vehicle had to pass scrutineering. This involved Theta and Cheryl getting into the vehicle whilst students helped steady and secure them in, ready for key safety measurements to be obtained. As well as this, Cathy in Year 11 was able to explain the challenges faced and overcome by the team that morning to the event organisers.

After some lunch prepared by our fantastic Catering Team, the girls were slipstream bound! Miss Byrne collected our telemetry unit, fixing it to the side of the vehicle to track our progress throughout the race proceedings.

Our first race was in the F24+ category, which was for the 16 and overs where Alyssa, Janice, Harriet, and Hebe competed. The car was able to finish the race, and Alyssa reached our top speed of just over 23mph – after a peak at 11th in the race, we changed driver multiple times for racer experience and end up in 22nd place.

'In the morning, we have faced some problems with our control box in the car, and regrettably we could not join the first race. But fortunately, we received lots of kindness and help from volunteers, specialists, and other groups.

Although we were in competition with other teams, they still kindly lent the crucial component (a solenoid box) to us, which has enabled our car to run properly and allowed us to have the opportunity to get in the car and give it a go, experiencing the ‘fast&furious’ on the field. When I saw the wheels start to rotate normally, I felt so excited and, most importantly I deeply felt the power of kindness and unselfishness. So, when another team came and asked if we could lend a spare battery to them, our team also very generously lent it out. Overall, the atmosphere of the race was not that competitive, but pretty harmonious, and I’m really looking forward to next year!'

SPORT Victorious U13A Cricket vs Brighton College The under 13As took on Brighton College Lower School this Wednesday at East Brighton Park. Brighton College batted first, with some tight bowling

by Harriet, Elsa, and Romey, Roedean managed to keep Brighton to a score of 64-5. Roedean then went into bat, with Polly and Ruby opening the batting. Brighton managed to dismiss Polly early, but Ruby held firm. Bella helped Ruby with a great partnership of 25 runs. After Bella was bowled out, Gabby and Tessa then helped Ruby carry the team to victory. Ruby finished 19* and Tessa 6*. Roedean won the game by 7 wickets. Batter of the Game went to Ruby, and Bowler of the Game went to Harriet. Well done!

Cricket vs Brighton College U12A

The U12A beat an inexperienced Brighton College team by 70 runs in a softball pairs game this week. Brighton scored 63 runs, and Roedean conceded 60 runs to wides and no balls. Bella was the pick of the bowlers, taking a wicket, and not conceding a run from her two overs. Roedean’s batting was much better than their bowling, and they quickly surpassed the required target. Sorrell played aggressively and scored 31, including 7 boundaries – well done!

Despite the weather, the U13B team had a great game of cricket on Wednesday against Brighton College. Brighton won the toss and put the Roedean girls in to bat. All the girls batted really well, getting plenty of runs.

Stand out performances came from Isabel (36, with eight 4s) and Alicia (19). They set a target of 373 for the opposition.

The Roedean girls then fielded and bowled really well. Lexi, Chloe, and Jemima all took wickets, and Jemima also only conceded 2 runs!

MVPs went to Lexi and Jemima. Well done!

1st XI Cricket vs Bede's The 1st XI Cricket team faced a very strong opponent in Bede's in the Sussex Cup. It was a spectacular day for some Cricket, and Roedean won the toss and chose to field first.

We struck early, with a special wicket in the second over, Amelia delivering a straight ball on the wickets, the batter striking it hard back towards the bowler, and Amelia managing to get a touch on the ball before hitting the wickets at the bowler's end with the batsman miles from her crease. The field erupted and the team were buoyed by the good start.

Following this, Bede's managed to consolidate and put on an impressive partnership in which both batters reached over 50, and the innings flourished for them after that.

Poppy was the pick of the bowlers, with figures of 1 for 20 in her 3 overs.

Poppy and Maria opened the batting on the third ball of the over – Poppy faced a peach of a delivery to take the top of off with her first ball. Eliza came in, and the two of them steadied the innings and scored freely for the next few overs. Maria was next to go, after hitting across the line, she missed a straight one and was bowled for 9 off 21 balls. Eliza then battled her way to an impressive 56 not out, with a few partners along the way.

We managed to face out our 20 overs, but fell 75 runs short on 122 for 5 – it was an impressive performance against very strong opposition.

U15A Cricket vs Brighton College and Hurst The U15A team played two games of Cricket this week, against Brighton College and Hurst.

The first was a fiercly competitive game which came down to the wire, with the Roedean girls only losing by 12 runs. A number of girls bowled partciularly well, including Eva, who took 2 wickets in her three overs, and Olivia and Lilah, who ony conceded 8 runs each. Olivia also batted extremely well, and got 34 runs from 22 balls.

The second game was not quite as competitve, but the girls are to be commended on the way they dealt with a tough game and difficult loss.

Freya did a particularly good job, captaining both games and bowling will in the Hurst game, only conceding 6 runs for her two overs. Alba also bowled extremely well, taking 3 of the 4 wickets, with Lilah taking the other. Well done to all the cricketers who played two away games on consecutive afternoons.

U15B Cricket vs Hurst The U15B team took to the field against Hurst in their first match of the season. We won the toss and chose to field first, to get see what we would need to chase when batting.

The opening pair managed to find the gaps and, helped by some big shots, scored freely in the first few overs. Throughout the innings, Roedean managed to pick up some wickets to limit the free scoring.

Esme was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets and bowling very accurately. We were set a target of 329, and we struggled at the start of the innings, with Hurst's opening bowlers being very effective with some quick and accurate deliveries.

1st VII Netball vs the ORs

Throughout our innings, there were glimpses of good shots, powerful hitting, and some very good running between the wickets, especially from Esme and Lilah, putting together a good partnership of 21 in the last few overs.

We ended on 254, and lost by 75, but a good game was played by all!

Brighton County Athletics Trials

This weekend, we hosted our OR Netball match versus our current 1st VII. The sun was shining and it was a lovely day to welcome back the Old Roedeanians. Our 1st team had a strong start, and were leading 14-5 after 2 quarters. The second half was more closely contested, after the ORs had got back in the swing of it! There was fantastic play from both sides, and the spectators cheered everyone on from start to finish. The final score was 28-16 to the 1st team. A huge well done to all who played, and we are looking forward to next year's event already!

On Monday evening, we took 4 girls from a variety of age groups to compete in the Brighton Trials evening at Withdean Stadium.

First up was Molly (Yr8), competing with Year 8s and 9s in the Hurdles event. Molly had an amazing start and flew across the hurdles. She won her race convincingly by a whole hurdle length.

In the next track event, Nia (Yr11), who competed in the 800m. She was in the front pack for the whole race, sitting on the shoulder of the front runner. Nia timed her overtake perfectly, and left it until the final straight.

She used her impressive turn of speed and won the 800m by 5 metres – another outstanding performance.

Ruby (Yr10) was next up on the track for the 100m. She had the best start she has had in recent events, and was leading from the gun. She kept pushing the whole way and again took a convincing win!

While the track events were going on, Ruth (Yr12) competed in the Shot Put, and Serena (Yr13) competing in High Jump. Although both girls did not reach their PBs, they still performed extremely well!

Congratulations to all the girls who competed, and we are looking forward to seeing you competing at more events this term.

On Saturday, a group of 11 Old Roedeanians and their guests came back to take on the current girls on the netball court.

The ORs, who all rotated into the team during the match, were from the Classes of 2016-21, and many of them hadn't played Netball since leaving Roedean, so there were some nerves beforehand!

The ORs put up a fierce fight, but the victory went to the current girls, with a score of 28-16.

Following the match, we were treated to delicious refreshments in the Clubhouse, and a chance for the ORs, their supporters, and current girls to chat with each other.

Football vs Ardingly U13A & B

The U13 A and B teams took on their first ever Saturday fixture against Ardingly College. As the games began, it became apparent that the importance of close control and movement off the ball would be a necessity as the pitch was smaller than that on which what the girls had previously played.

No matter the alterations in pitch dimensions, the girls were able to learn, overcome, and adapt to this situation. Both teams started in a similar fashion, with lots of pressure on both of the Ardingly’s defensive lines. This was rewarded around the 10-minute mark for both teams, as they were able to make the first breakthrough of the game.

Both Ardingly sides rallied to then equalise the two matches. The matches once again became finely balanced for both A and B squads. As it progressed further, the A team came under substantial pressure from the Ardingly attack and were able to weather many of the storms, thanks to the stone wall defense of Ruby, Harriet, Tessa, Maud, Lois, Anya, Molly and Bella.

Unfortunately, a few well-struck shots were able to breach the Roedean goal, however, this did not deter the girls from continuing with their high intensity and resilient play as Gabriella maintained a high press on the Ardingly defence.

As for the B team, once Ardingly scored their second, Roedean girls caught a second wind and were able to equalise and take the lead through some excellent intricate play from Aimee, Sorrel, Izzy, and Leggy, whilst the defence of Sasha, Sienna, Amarah, and Lily held firm to deny any further advances by the Ardingly B team.

During the second half, the A team was able to withstand long periods of pressure from Ardingly. When Harriet came to play as striker, the A team were able to add to their score; unfortunately some more well-placed finishes from Ardingly meant they lost the fixture.

However, the A team can be extremely proud of their efforts and intensity throughout, and a special mention goes to Kelsie, who made some great saves throughout the game.

As for the B team, the chemistry was clear to see and they worked effectively to continue adding to their tally. Sorrel, Izzy, Aimee, and Leggy continued to make advances on the score sheet, through some lovely assists and interplay that lead to goals that were fully deserved.

of time, Roedean girls have improved their football ability and knowledge to take on one of the toughest opponents in the local area.

U15A & B

The U15A and B football teams came back down to Earth following their midweek success against Ardingly, with a dominant performance from the hosts. It was a free-scoring game, with some impressive tactics and ferocious football being played.

The girls fought long and hard, and put together some good attacks using the width, with Ruby and Izzy chasing through balls all game long, and Orla netting the only goal for the Roedean teams.

The back 4 of Alba, Liv, Ellie, and Olivia in the U15A team worked tirelessly all game, with their centre forward showing very impressive acceleration and skills with the ball at her feet.

Olivia and Grace played well in goal for both teams, and our opponents peppered shots on goal all game long, which required some very impressive saves.

It was a good experience of full pitch football against strong opposition – well done!

Minnie's Netball Player of the Season!

The Sports Department is really pleased to announce that Minnie (Yr8) has been awarded the Coaches' Player of the Season Trophy at NRG Netball Club, in the U13 age group. This is a fantastic achievement and thoroughly welldeserved!

Sisters n Sport National Finals for Roedean girls playing in Clubs!

This weekend, a number of our netballers represented their club in the Sisters in Sport National Finals Day! They had a semi-final and final in the same day, and all played some amazing netball.

Gabriella and Harriet were representing 5ways in the U13 National Cup category. They had an extremely close semi-final, which they narrowly lost. Then an even closer 3rd and 4th play-off, which went to a golden goal! Harriet had the ball in her hand, and managed to keep her cool to score the winning goal to secure them 3rd place in the National Cup competition!

Molly and Ruby were representing Magic U13 in the National Plate competition, and they managed to win the semi-final and had a nail-biting final. They were down by 1 going into the final quarter, and unfortunately they couldn't quite claw it back! They lost by 2, but that still meant they came 2nd in the National Plate competition!

In the U12s, Liv was playing for Magic, and they had some extremely close matches, securing 4th place in the National Plate!

Elsie and Pearl were also representing Magic in the U17 category, which is 2 years above them. They put on strong performances and came 4th in the National Plate competition.

We are so proud of all our netballers, some of these girls getting to experience the finals day of the national competition for both club and school is a remarkable achievement. You are all amazing, well done!

Molly's Squad are County Champions Throughout this year, Molly has been attending Sussex Satellite Netball. From the training squad, they selected a squad of 10 to represent Sussex at the Inter-Counties tournament in Bedford. It is an amazing achievment in itself to be selected as part of that squad, but we are delighted to announce that they won the whole tournament and were crowned County Champions. Huge congratulations go to Molly for being part of this squad – it is a fantastic experience and achievement. Well done!

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW

Dominant U15A LTA Tennis vs Hurst The U15A Tennis team took on Hurstpierpoint College in their 2nd LTA league fixture, and they were looking strengthened, with Mia (2nd in Sussex) and Saffron (6th in Sussex) back in the team.

Mia and Saffron started with their singles, and both won convincingly 6-0, with their impressive forehands making quick work of their opponents.

Eli and Maddie started in their doubles and also made quick work of their opponents winning 6-0.

In their singles matches, Eli and Maddie played really well, with some tough opposition and great tennis being played by both teams.

Mia and Saffron then combined and worked well together, winning their doubles match 6-2.

Overall, it was an impressive performance from the Roedean girls!

LTA Tennis vs Bede's U13A

The U13A Tennis team took on Bede's in their second LTA League fixture on a glorious Saturday morning. In their singles games, the girls performed brilliantly, with Amalie, Harriet, and Alicia winning their matches.

In the doubles, Amalie and Harriet put together a superb doubles performance, and won their match 6-2, after a spirited Bede's fight back.

Alicia and Sophie fought admirably in their match, and pushed the Bede's girls all the way, losing out 2-6.

It was a good overall win of 8-4, to keep their winning record up in this exciting league competition for the girls.

The U15A Tennis team faced challenging opponents from Bede's in their first LTA league fixture of the Summer Term.

They worked hard, and attempted to put the Bede's tennis players under pressure when they could. Elodie had a standout performance, pushing her opponent all the way to a 6-6 tie break, which she narrowly lost in a tight and tiring game. In the doubles matches, it was tough again, but Maddie, Elodie, Yuki, and Clara worked hard, and viewed the match as good experience for future matches. The overall score ended 4-8 to Bede's.

U14A Tennis vs Hurst The U14A Tennis team took on Hurstpierpoint College in a friendly fixture away. All four players played a singles set and doubles set, with 2 points awarded for winning a set. Maya played very well in both her singles and doubles matches, winning both with some very good rallies and impressive gameplay. Sarah, Freya, and Grace played well in their first fixture of the term, and really enjoyed the experience. All three faced tough opponents, and unfortunately lost their singles matches.

Hurst ended as winners 4-8, but everyone enjoyed a good afternoon of Tennis.
