Head’s Introduction Although the weather has been a little cooler this week, this has not dampened the spirits at all for many in our community. I am incredibly impressed with the girls’ commitment to the holistic nature of school life, even ‘virtually’. Our brilliant sporting challenges each week have kept us active, and as a community we have covered over 19000 kilometres in our Race Across the World, meaning that we have made it to our sister school in South Africa, and it looks like we’ll make it back to Roedean before the end of term – I do hope that some of you may be able to support the girls’ efforts and make a donation through our justgiving page to Off the Fence. It is also wonderful to read here about the range of co-curricular activities the girls are taking part in, such as travel writing in HHH and touch-typing, as well as lots of House-based activities. Well done to everyone!

With two weeks to the end of term, we are working hard to make sure that Roedean is ready for the start of next academic year. I am very pleased that the School is part of the BSA’s CovidSafe Charter, showing our commitment to take all possible measures to make Roedean a safe educational environment ahead of September.

Many of the Year 12s have been going through the Prefect selection process this week, and we have really enjoyed meeting all the girls and discussing leadership issues with them. The new team will be announced before the end of term.

Good luck to all.

Next academic year, we will welcome new students and staff to Roedean, and, as normally happens at this time of year, we will be inviting them to the School before the end of term, albeit ‘virtually’, to get a flavour is what it is like.

As well as New Girls’ Day, we are also hosting a remote Rockpools’ Day, and I am pleased that some of my colleagues have been able to recreate this lovely experience day in the current circumstances.

I expect that there will be a sense of relief for many of the girls as today marks the end of the last end of year assessments. Since the half-term break, Years 11 and 13 have been engaging brilliantly with their pre-degree and pre-Sixth Form courses, and I am sure that this preparatory learning will stand them in very good stead. The current Year 10s will be having Sixth Form tasters next week, and I know that this will give them a valuable insight into the Sixth Form experience.

Some year-groups at Roedean South Africa returned to school this week, and I am sure that many of you will be desperate to do the same and to return to normality. I would like to congratulate everyone in the Roedean community for adapting so well to the current situation. I hope you all have a great weekend, and good luck for next week.

Extreme Hair-Cut – for Charity At a time when barber’s and hairdresser’s shops have been closed for a while, some people are considering extreme solutions to having their hair cut! Roedean’s ‘Mass Observation’

Florence Makes Masks

Have any of you been keeping a diary of ‘life in lockdown’? If so, the History department would love to hear from you with any diary entries, capturing a typical day in your lives during this time of remote learning, detailing how you’ve adapted to the highs (and lows) of online school and how you’ve been keeping in touch with each other. We would love to gather these entries together to create our own ‘Roedean Lockdown Archive’, which we’re sure will be of huge interest for future generations of Roedeanians – what may seem quite mundane to you now will offer huge fascination to future historians!

Well done to Florence (Yr13), who has been spending some of her time making material facemasks. Why not take a look at her website https://www.florencemakesmasks.co.uk – on the site, she explains why she is doing this: ‘Like many others, when we went into lockdown, I started looking for a non-medical face mask.

The masks I found were uncomfortable, lacked originality and there wasn't much choice. With time on my side, I decided to go about making my own designs. They immediately became popular with my family and friends. Florence Makes Masks was born. Each one is hand stitched in my Brighton studio just a stone’s throw from the beach.’ What a brilliant initiative – well done!

All you need to do is send in your diary entry on a word document (illustrated if you’d like), but written since lockdown started. Anna – Charity Clothes Well done to Anna (Yr8) who, along with her mother, has helped put together sets of clothes to sell for charity. £10 from the sale of each of the sets, all personally designed by Ms Wells, is being donated to the Stephen Lawrence Trust, a charity selected by Anna and her brother in support of the #blacklivesmatter movement.

Figure Drawing When we were placed in lockdown, I knew I wanted to continue having the freedom of drawing on one of the weekdays of our new online learning system, so I signed up for Figure Drawing. Something I love about Figure Drawing is feeling like you’re in a safe environment to show your work – I sometimes feel like it is just me and Mrs Strachan. We started by observing the proportions of the human body, we then discovered perspective, and attempted copying a selection of line drawings of people. Recently, we have started looking at vanishing points, and how to make a room look realistic with the horizon line. After that, we will place a variety of our earlier figures into the rooms we have drawn.

I have learnt a lot of new techniques I can apply to my work in later years, and I am so excited to continue attending the club.

Indigo's Art I love doing art in lockdown, as it is a creative escape to being trapped indoors. This drawing is of me sitting at my desk doing online learning. As you can imagine, I spend a lot of time here on a screen, but also looking out of my window to the world, which gives me inspiration for my art. Even though I am an Art Scholar, I have delved into art more than ever in lockdown. So when my amazing art teacher recommended Grayson's art club, I knew I had to enter straight away. I am going to be entering every week now, because it gives me a really fun project to do for something I am passionate about. We all would have done more of our hobbies and passions in lockdown, but I hope we all continue to strive with what we love doing.

Typing Club The Gorillas group in Year 8 HHH have just completed a three-week typing course, which they are now able to continue independently.

With the benefits of touch typing potentially being increased, speed and accuracy at the keyboard, saved time and effort, and enhanced confidence, especially in the current online learning environment, one could argue that there has never been a better time to learn!

The girls made excellent progress and lots of merits were awarded. The most improved in the final week were Isis, who achieved an amazing additional 61,767 points in a week to bring her final total score to 130,151, Delilah, who improved by 56,918, and Fleur, who improved by 56,666.

However, the highest score overall was achieved

by Clemmie, with a sensational score of 159,263.

Eliza achieved a typing speed of 35 words per minute, closely followed by Meg at 31 words per minute, and Delilah, Mia and Isis maintaining an impressive 97% accuracy.

Year 8 Travel Writing Pastiche Lots of memes have popped up since the world went into lockdown, among the most popular have been those that make light of the restrictions on travel: from mock ups of plane departure boards to imaginative names for different rooms in the house, to using a treadmill as a travellator and luggage carousel, people around the world have enjoyed pastiching some of the recognisable tropes of international travel. In HHH, the Yr8 Hedgehog group have spent a few weeks learning how to write their own piece of travel writing: a blog or a travel guide. Here are some of our favourites!

HBO Wildlife The garden is the best place to spot all the wildlife.

In the daytime, mostly around mealtimes as they are off home for lunch, you’re able to spot all of the cats in the neighbourhood, as the garden is used as a path for getting into the woods. As we move into the evening there are bats who live in the woods, so dusk is the perfect time to spot them! When it is finally dark, that’s when the foxes come out. I suggest you stay up even later as you will have the chance to see a badger and if you’re lucky even a hedgehog. I found that leaving food out wasn’t such a good idea as it attracts all of the ants! My favourite cat that comes through is the ginger and white cat – she is so sweet and friendly, she even tried to come in the house once! The other cats include a white and black one, she is very beautiful, a few black ones, and one very large black one who isn’t very good at being a cat as she doesn’t like heights, can’t walk on a fence one foot in front of the other – they say cats always land on their feet well there’s always an exception to the rule, need I say more.

Things to do There are many activities on offer. The best ones I suggest are baking, sewing, sunbathing in the garden, (and my personal favourite) the weekly cinema musicals screening – with popcorn of course! The best things to bake are peanut butter cookies, chocolate and vanilla marble cupcakes with a chocolate orange frosting, ice-cream and flapjack.

I did find that when making flapjacks, light brown muscovado sugar and golden caster sugar are most certainly not the same thing. Well, I know for next time! Savoury foods include bread, risotto, and tarts.

My favourite tart is the puff pastry with tomato pesto and mozzarella – it’s highly recommended!

With sewing, the best things to make at the moment are face masks, very easy but very useful – do be careful with ironing on the interfacing, but it should be glue side down (I learnt from personal experience), small drawstring bags, with all this time on our hands we’ve been doing a lot of clearing and found many things I thought I had lost in the past, so they are great for stopping yourself losing them again! Every weekend, along with all the other films available to watch, there is a weekly cinema of a musical; my favourite so far has been the arena tour of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’! But all of them have been brilliant – next on the list is ‘Peter Pan’!

Wildlife The wildlife in Brighton is fascinating! There are the beautiful Herring Gulls, who thrive in areas close to the sea, which is why the locals call them Sea Gulls.

Although when you see these birds, protect any food you have close by, because one of them stole my chips.

And, of course, the city is home to the famous dog Juno. I managed to book a visit in La Kitchenia at 3pm on a Tuesday. But I would advise booking fairly far in advance because she is very popular and I struggled to get a ticket. Because of her old age, she was quite quiet, not like how I had imagined her, although I would recommend either going out on one of her daily walks or visiting her during feeding time. Because on her walk, she was like a whole new dog, running and playing in the grass! And, as you can imagine, during feeding time you can get the best photos of her in action!

Accommodation I stayed in a very lovely B and B for some of my time in Brighton called Los Arundiana House. It was a beautiful street and very close to the centre of town – it only took me about 20 minutes to walk in! The sea was also right on my doorstep and the luscious fields right around the corner! Although I would recommend buying the en suite room (which, although slightly more expensive, I think it would be much more satisfactory) if, like me, you mind a messy neighbour. Because on the top floor of the B and B there are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, so as you can imagine I had to share the bathroom with the guest next door to me. And she was very, very messy!

Lectures and Seminars in Activity 1 There are a series of lectures and seminars given by members of staff, and available to all students this week between 2:30 and 3:10 – there is something to interest everyone, so do pick at least one to attend – the links to the Teams channels are in the Student Bulletin, or you can search ‘Academic Lectures and Workshops’ in Teams and click on the appropriate channel.

A Visit to Cantina The environment in Cantina is very pretty, the garden has beautiful grass with nice views, it is not very noisy during the day, but maybe for a few minutes a day you can hear a train, which is a nice thing to hear once in a while, to know a community is still there. The trees at the back give a nice shade for when it is very hot, the trees are filled with white flowers, with a dash of pink. The grass is bright green and a perfect feeling on your legs. At night the stars twinkle in the sky and the blue of the sky is perfect, it is the perfect temperature to just sit and relax while star gazing. There is also a really nice footpath that goes through the whole town, you get to see the river, wildlife, and lots of different style trees. At the end of the footpath, there is a café, with very good drinks – I would recommend you getting the iced fruit tea, it has lots a fruity flavour and it goes perfectly with their famous cookies. The sky was always clear, with a bright sun and moon.

Alba My trip to La Weekday!

At about 7:30 am I decided it was time to leave the incredible town of La bed and head towards my next destination which was la Breakfast Table.

My time in la bed was very relaxing and I have left feeling refreshed and awake, but I do wish I could have stayed longer.

Once I had arrived at La Breakfast Table, I straight away found out that they are well known for their croissants and fresh orange juice that they serve, overall I really enjoyed my visit and would recommend it to anyone.

The next city I was heading for was a city called la desk. At la desk you are often greeted by a famous cat called Bella who gets in the way as you try and study, she is incredibly cute and often walks straight onto your laptop. My experience here was enjoyable, however you are often given prep to complete here, which means you must finish this work at your next destination which is La weekend, this can be annoying as you just want to have a relaxing, stress free time at the brilliant la weekend.

CO-CURRICULAR Students from all years were invited to enter the Classics Department Bake Off competition. We were so impressed with the brilliant creations you sent in and hope you enjoy seeing some of the entries here. Lower school winner is Siyun (Yr7), who created a brilliant edible Tower of Pisa, which amazingly even showed it leaning due to some cleverly placed haribo sweets. Upper school winner is Jemima (Yr10) whose Vesuvius is spectacular with poor Caecilius suffering in his garden before the imminent eruption of 79AD. We were so impressed with the entries including a gladiator chariot from Maria (Yr9), rice crispy amphitheatre from Lilah (Yr8) and a Medusa cake from Megan (Yr7) and Polly (Yr9). We hoped you enjoyed making and eating all your fabulous creations and thank you for sharing them!

House Competition – Mental Health Awareness Week Following last week’s article, here are some of the entries into the House competition for Mental Health Awareness Week:

Task We would like you to create a musical composition based on your happy and fun experiences within your house. This is a creative opportunity for you to celebrate your time in House, using music to convey your experiences.

Consider how it feels to be part of a House and how you could portray this through music?

Think about a positive memory you have had in House: laughing and joking with your friends, eating doughnuts, or maybe the excitement of getting ready for a House competition.

We are keen to represent our plethora of international backgrounds and cultures, bringing all students in their homes together from around the world, in a united musical performance. Consider the backdrop for your videos and what you could include to convey your cultural identity.

You can work individually or as a group, with each member contributing differently to the arrangement through composing, singing, writing lyrics, or playing an instrument of your choice. We are keen to promote participation, so please don’t worry about the standard you are musically – it is about getting involved and having fun!

The composition can be solely instrumental or can have a lyrical aspect to it.

House Music Ensemble Competition In the last week of term, the Music Department will be showcasing the musical talents of Roedean in a wonderful creative performance. As part of this concert, each house will produce an ensemble which will include a collection of individual and group performances from students in their house.

HEAD’S WEEKLY REVIEW SPORT The first week of Roedean Virtual Sports Day went extremely well, with hundreds of entries flying in – thank you and well done to all those participating.

If you are unable to complete the activities due to injuries or circumstances, email a member of the PE department and we will come up with a solution for you.

Our live morning sessions launched last week – all sessions were very successful and all girls who participated worked very hard. The winners of the week commencing 1 June are as follows: • Congratulations to Lara (Yr8) who was awarded 'Individual Performance of the Week' – she has been busy cycling around where she lives, tracking her distances and times on Strava, and she has also been working particularly hard within her PE and Games lessons

• Congratulations to Year 7 Peach class, for being Team of the Week for their continued enthusiasm and hard-working attitude in their PE lessons! – they designed an impressive fitness circuit on their own and linked all exercises to muscles successfully • The winner of the Netball Challenge this week was Amelia (Yr9), for completing 41 press-ups on the ball in 1 minute, a phenomenal score We are looking forward to the final week of Athletics results to come in and seeing you all in next week’s live sessions. Thank you for your continued hard work and enthusiasm towards PE and Sport at Roedean. Virtual Sports Day – Week 2 Year 7, 8, and 9 have been busy in their PE lessons competing in our Virtual Sports Day event, this week taking on the task of the standing long jump, shot 'sock' putt, and the 800m. The girls have sent in some fantastic videos, photos and screenshots of what they have been up to, gaining points for their Houses. The current table of results is as follows: House

Maggie’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show video Maggie has had a busy couple of weeks filming and editing a film for the RHS virtual Chelsea flower show from her garden in Brighton – it was lots of hard work, and a brilliant result!

Next week for the final 3 events, we are looking to bring the Roedean community together with the household relay, creating a relay team with up to 4 household members per team where possible. We are also looking forward to seeing results through for the standing triple jump and 1500m.

Iris’s Trumpet Playing

Following her fantastic selfchoreographed tap dance last week, Iris has shared a lovely piece on the trumpet with us – she seems to be keeping incredibly busy; attention keep up the good work, Iris!

Ava’s new pony Ava has spent the most of her time in during the lockdown on the yard – the great news is that she has finally got the dream pony that she has waited a long time for, Florentyna Gold (Flo) – the pony seems to have settled very well into her new home and both of them are very happy.
