Weeping Higan Cherry Represents “Hanami”: Rockford, IL – NLI’s Legacy Tree Program announces the Weeping Higan Cherry (Prunus pendula, formerly Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’) as the March Tree of the Month. This tree, nominated by Tim Gruner, Garden Curator and Head of Horticulture at Anderson Japanese Gardens (Rockford), measures a height of 28 feet, with a trunk circumference of 46.2 inches, and an average crown spread of 30 feet. Weeping Higan Cherry is native to Japan but is planted around the world in similar climates because of its beautiful spring bloom and graceful, pendulous branches. It’s iconic in Japanese themed gardens and this tree is the largest known in the region and grows just off the northwest corner of the Spring Creek Partners office overlooking Rockford’s renowned Anderson Japanese Gardens, 318 Spring Creek Road, Rockford, IL 61107. As one of several species and many cultivars of “flowering cherries” – their ephemeral bloom in Japan is the equivalent of holiday and one makes time to experience their bloom in a practice known as “hanami”. From bud through bloom to raining petals as the flowering is done, they are a symbol of our short lives well lived.

“We bring you this as our legacy tree to challenge everyone to make time and experience the many beautiful trees around the region that will be coming into bloom over the next couple of months,” said Alan Branhagen, Executive Director for Natural Land Institute. “Though Weeping Higan Cherry is not native, it is not invasive and does provide

for pollinators, and even at least some of our native insects including the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly utilize it as a host plant” he said. Locally native related trees

include the Black, Choke and Pin Cherries and American Plum.

Weeping Higan Cherry is usually sold at nurseries as a graft on top of a sweet cherry trunk and some

trees around town have reverted back to the sweet cherry as sprouts from the trunk overtake the graft of weeping branches. Flowers are single and light pink but there are cultivars with double flowers that look like pendant pink tutus. The March legacy tree is a full tree with no graft and is a single flowering plant. Few fruits (they are tiny cherries) are produced, probably because most cherries need to be cross-pollinated – remember cloned plants are all the same plant. Fall color on Weeping Higan Cherry can be lovely shades from apricot to oranges and red in late fall – bringing another season of color to the garden.

Visit Anderson Japanese Gardens this spring and see this and the many other spring-flowering trees that provide us (and pollinators!) with a riot of color after a long winter. For hours, admissions pricing and other important information please visit: https://andersongardens.org/.

Branhagen encourages everyone to “walk your neighborhood and visit local wildlands when flowering trees are in bloom as well, and start your own version of hanami as a celebration of spring and a life well lived.”

Democratic lawmaker grows concerned with use of AI in health care

Bills dealing with AI in online therapy, health insurance

advance in House committees

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois lawmakers are growing concerned with the use of artificial intelligence in health care.

Rep. Bob Morgan, D-Deerfield, is sponsoring two bills that would place restrictions on the use of AI in online therapy services as well as AI use in decision-making processes that determine a person’s health insurance coverage.

“Artificial intelligence is here, whether we like it or not,” Morgan said in an email to Capitol News Illinois. “When it comes to health insurance, the stakes are simply too high to allow unchecked automation to dictate decisions that could determine whether someone receives life-saving treatment or faces financial ruin.”

One of Morgan’s sponsored bills — House Bill 1806, which deals with the use of AI in online mental health services — passed unanimously out of the House Health Care Licensing Committee on Wednesday.

If enacted, the measure would prohibit licensed mental health professionals from using AI to assist in providing support in therapy or psychotherapy sessions.

Morgan said the National Association of Social Workers has received an increasing number of reports from users of these online services, who say they were

not aware they were interacting with AI chat-bots during their sessions.

“The introduction of AI into mental health care presents, I think, pretty obvious but certainly serious risks that can lead to dangerous, even life-threatening consequences,” he said in the committee hearing. “Again, it’s probably obvious the most that AI does not have the ability to exercise ethical judgment or recognize when a person is in crisis, or adapt responses based on non-verbal cues and emotional tone — all the things that we’re training our health care professionals to identify.”

Morgan’s other AI-related bill, House Bill 35, would change the way health insurance providers use AI to make decisions about customers’ coverage. The bill passed out of the House Insurance Committee on an 11-6 vote on Tuesday.

Morgan outlined the bill’s goal as “preventing inappropriate adverse determinations” from being taken against consumers. If HB35 is enacted into law, health insurers would be prohibited from solely relying on AI to deny, reduce or terminate coverage for patients. Instead, those AI-made decisions would have to be “meaningfully reviewed” by a human employee who has the authority to override it.

Morgan said that every major health insurance provider currently is using AI in some way, both helpful and harmful to customers. Providers’ use of AI to make coverage decisions for consumers without any oversight by real people is one of those harmful ways, he said.

“As we sit here today, insurance providers are using AI to decide what is going to be our health insurance claims,” he said in the committee meeting. “We are completely blind to what that could be and how this be used against us and against our claims.”

Late last year, ProPublica published an investigation on EviCore, a company that’s used by a large number of major insurance companies in the United States, which found that the AI algorithm EviCore uses to make decisions about consumer’s coverage has high denial rates.

“We have already seen large, nationwide insurance providers face class action lawsuits for relying on AI algorithms to deny life-saving care,” Morgan said in the email to CNI, making reference to the lawsuits against Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealth Group, filed in recent years for their use of AI-driven decisions.

A lawsuit was filed against UnitedHealth Group in 2023, and a decision was reached just last month. Five of the seven counts were dismissed, Health Finance reported. Morgan’s bill aims to curb this practice.

“By ensuring that human review is required for AI-driven decisions that negatively impact patients, we are upholding fairness, accountability, and consumer protection in a system that affects millions of lives,” he said in an email. “This is not about rejecting innovation — it’s about making sure technology serves people, not the other way around.”

HB35 has opposition from three agencies, including the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, American Health Insurance Professionals, and the ACLU of Illinois. However, the bill has support from 10 others, including the Illinois State Medical Society, Illinois Pharmacists Association, and the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.”

Last week, I talked about using edible plants, like fruits and vegetables, in your landscape and among your ornamentals. Though this isn’t a new approach to growing, this does allow you to reclaim space that your ornamentals have taken over and even showcase what you are growing in other areas that you normally do not put your edibles in.

One of the unique opportunities, which you may also see as a challenge, is that edibles will/may change form over the season(s). Some of this is what they would normally do like going from flower to fruit which can be a great thing to see

Edible Landscaping, continued

in your growing area. However, annual fruits-vegetables can have their forms changed by insect-disease damage, “going to seed”, nutrient issues, and cold weather. This change in shape and color may be something that you accept as it’s not harming your plants necessarily and is just changing your landscape for that brief period.

Another benefit of edibles with ornamentals is companion planting where both crops could see benefits for insect control. Some common companions include thyme, nasturtium, and onion for broccoli, cabbage, and lettuce, marigold with zucchini, and basil and thyme with tomato. With many of these combina-

tions, you may need more of the herbs than the primary crop i.e. 10 tomato plants surrounded by 20-30 thyme and basil plants.

One of the easiest and approachable edibles group to use with ornamentals are the greens. These include collards, swiss chard, and kale that provide color and shape. Not only do they provide some great qualities to your landscaping but most of them will stay the same color and form all season long with most of these growing from April to November. Collards have large, green leaves that thrive in summer heat. Swiss Chard has vibrant yellows, purples, and red stalks. ‘Bright Lights’ is a very common swiss

chard. Kale tends to have more a texture quality that can be found in varieties like ‘Lacinato’, ‘Red Russian’, and ‘Curly’. Another cool season vegetable to use is broccoli and cauliflower. While they can take up a big footprint in your growing area, they can still be showstoppers with unique colors like purple and orange. Some cauliflower varieties include ‘Cheddar’, ‘Graffiti’, ‘Purple of Sicily’ and ‘Snow Crown’ (traditional white). Next week, I’ll talk more about edible landscaping with your summer crops. ‘Danish Viking blood is boiling.’ Danes boycott US goods with fervor as others in Europe do so too

Ivan Hansen, a retired Danish police officer, loaded up his basket at the supermarket, carefully checking each product to avoid buying anything made in the United States. No more Coca-Cola, no more California Zinfandel wine or almonds.

The 67-year-old said it’s the only way he knows to protest U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. He’s furious about Trump’s threat to seize the Danish territory of Greenland, but it’s not just that. There are also the threats to take control of the Panama Canal and Gaza. And Trump’s relationship with Elon Musk, who has far-right ties and made what many interpreted as a straight-armed Nazi salute.

On his recent shopping trip, Hansen returned home with dates from Iran. It shocked him to realize that he now perceives the United States as a greater threat than Iran.

“Trump really looks like a bully who tries in every way to intimidate, threaten others to get his way,” he told The Associated Press. “I will fight against that kind of thing.”

A growing boycott movement across Europe

Hansen is just one supporter of a growing movement across Europe and Canada to boycott U.S. products. People are joining Facebook groups where they exchange ideas about how to avoid U.S. products and find alternatives. Feelings are especially strong across the Nordic region — and very possibly strongest in Denmark given Trump’s threats to seize Greenland.

Google trends showed a spike in searches for the term “Boycott USA,” and “Boycott America,” as Trump announced new tariffs, with the top regions including Denmark, Canada and France. At the same time, a global backslash is also building against Tesla as the brand becomes tied to Trump, with plunging sales in Europe and Canada. In Germany, police were investigating after four Teslas were set on fire Friday.

Elsebeth Pedersen, who lives in Faaborg on the Danish island of Funen, just bought a car and made a point of not even looking at U.S.-made options.

“Before Elon Musk started to act like a maniac a Tesla could have been an option. And maybe a Ford,” she said.

French entrepreneur Romain Roy said his solar panel firm has bought a new Tesla fleet each year since 2021 but canceled its order for another 15 to take a stand against Musk’s and Trump’s policies.

Describing the United States as “a country closing in on itself,” he cited Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accord and Musk’s arm gestures. He said he was instead buying European models, even though it would cost an additional 150,000 euros ($164,000).

“Individual consumers, society, our countries, Europe must react,” he told broadcaster Sud Radio.

Responding to consumer demand, Denmark’s largest supermarket chain, the Salling Group, created a star-shaped label this month to mark European-made goods sold in its stores. CEO Anders Hagh said it’s not a boycott, but a response to consumers demanding a way to easily avoid American products.

“Our stores will continue to have brands on the shelves from all over the world, and it will always be up to customers to choose. The new label is only an additional service for customers who want to buy goods with European labels,” he said in a LinkedIn post.

‘I have never seen Danes so upset’

For Bo Albertus, “when Trump went on television and said he would by political force or military force take a piece of the Danish kingdom, it was just too much for me.”

The 57-year-old said he felt powerless and had to do something. He has given up Pepsi, Colgate toothpaste, Heinz ketchup and California wine, and replaced them with European products.

He is now an administrator of the Danish Facebook page “Boykot varer fra USA” (Boycott goods from the U.S.), which has swelled to over 80,000 members.

“Drink more champagne,” one user posted after Trump threatened 200% tariffs on EU wine and Champagne.

Albertus, a school principal, told the AP he really misses the strong taste of Colgate. But he’s been pleasantly surprised at finding a cola replacement that is half the price of Pepsi.

Trump’s policies have “brought the Danish Viking blood boiling,” said Jens Olsen, an electrician and carpenter. He is now considering replacing $10,000 worth of U.S.-made DeWalt power tools even though it will cost him a lot.

He has already found European replacements for an American popcorn brand and California-made Lagunitas IPA beer, which he calls “the best in the world.”

“I’ve visited the brewery several times, but now I don’t buy it anymore,” he said. He has mixed feelings because he is a dual DanishU.S. citizen, and has spent a lot of time in the

United States. But he can’t contain his anger.

“I’m 66 years old and I have never seen the Danes so upset before,” he said.

Michael Ramgil Stæhr has canceled a fall trip to the U.S. and is among many choosing to buy Danish instead of American-made, though he cannot pinpoint the exact moment he made the decision.

“Maybe it was when (Trump) announced to the world press that he intended to ‘take’ Greenland and the Panama Canal, and if necessary by military force. That and the gangster-like behavior towards the Ukrainian president in the White House,” the 53-year-old Copenhagen resident said.

“The man is deadly dangerous and is already costing lives” in the developing world and Ukraine, added Stæhr, who works helping disabled war veterans, many of whom got injured serving alongside U.S. troops in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. He himself served in Bosnia.

Rising anger in France, too

Edouard Roussez, a farmer from northern France, launched an online group, “Boycott USA, Buy French and European!” that in just two weeks has attracted over 20,000 members on Facebook.

Roussez believes a boycott of U.S. companies is a good way to express opposition to Trump’s policies, especially “the commercial and ideological war” he believes Trump is waging against Europe.

“First of all, these are the companies that financed Donald Trump’s campaign,” he said on state-owned LCP television channel. “I’m thinking of Airbnb, I’m thinking of Uber, I’m thinking of Tesla of course.”

The irony of it all? The group is on Facebook. Roussez said only the American online social media platform could give him the reach he needed. But he is working to migrate the group to other platforms with no U.S. funding or capital.

Some choices are harder than others

Some are also including U.S. services like Netflix in their boycotts.

Simon Madsen, 54, who lives in the central Danish city of Horsens with his wife and 13-year-old twins, says the family has given up Pringles, Oreos and Pepsi Max. Not so hard, really.

But now they’re discussing doing without Netflix, and that is a step too far for the kids.

He also wonders whether he should keep buying Danish-made Anthon Berg chocolate marzipan bars, which are made with American almonds.

It’s important, he said, for people to use the power of the purse to pressure companies to change.

“It’s the only weapon we’ve got,” he said.

Severe Weather

Devastating storms kill at least 39 across 7 states in the South and Midwest

Crammed into their two-door Toyota Celica with three huskies, Hailey Hart and her fiance Steve Romero hugged and prayed as a tornado rolled the car upside down before tossing it on its wheels again. They heard screams for help minutes after the twister ripped apart their home in Tylertown, Mississippi. “It was a bad dream come true,” Romero said.

Next door, Hart’s grandparents crawled out from the rubble of their house where they had sought shelter in a bathroom on Saturday. They all escaped with just a few scratches and aches.

Throughout the South and Midwest, residents and work crews were beginning to clean up Monday and survey the destruction after severe weather across

seven states kicked up a devastating combination of wildfires, dust storms and tornadoes, claiming at least 39 lives since Friday.

Wildfires in Oklahoma

Wind-driven wildfires across Oklahoma destroyed more than 400 homes, including more than 70 in and around Stillwater, home to Oklahoma State University. Four deaths were blamed on the fires or high winds, the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management said Sunday.

Crews trying to control the fires were quickly overwhelmed while going up against the high winds and low humidity fueling the flames on Friday, said Stillwater Fire Chief Terry Essary.

“It’s an insurmountable task,” he said.

In Mississippi, six people died and more than 200 were displaced by a string of tornadoes across three counties, said Gov. Tate Reeves.

Within about an hour of each other, two big twisters tore through the county that’s home to hard-hit Tylertown on Saturday, according to a preliminary report from the National Weather Service.

At least three people, including an 82-year-old woman, were killed in central Alabama. In Troy, parks officials said a recreation center where many residents had taken refuge had to be closed due to damage. No one was injured.

Scattered twisters killed at least a dozen people in the Missouri, authorities said.

Dakota Henderson said he and others rescuing trapped neighbors found five bodies in rubble Friday night outside what

remained of his aunt’s house in Wayne County, Missouri.

In Arkansas, officials confirmed three deaths.

Dust storms in Kansas and Texas

The high winds spurred dust storms that led to almost a dozen deaths in car crashes Friday.

Eight people died in a Kansas highway pileup involving at least 50 vehicles, according to the state highway patrol. Authorities said three people also were killed in car crashes during a dust storm in Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle.

Associated Press writers Jamie Stengle in Dallas, Sara Cline in Tylertown, Mississippi, Jeff Martin in Atlanta, Rebecca Reynolds in Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeff Roberson in Wayne County, Missouri contributed.

Beloit International Film Festival

BIFF returns for 20th season

The Beloit International Film Festival is back, and will run for 10 days, March 28-April 6. This is a couple weeks earlier than last year, but a little later than its traditional late February appearance.

Regardless of the calendar, BIFF is the perfect time for dinner and a movie, a delightful tradition that has been somewhat forgotten in the modern Internet era. A night out, watching a worthwhile film in a group setting on a large screen, and a tasty meal provides a great time. At BIFF, more often than not, the filmmaker will be there for a Q&A after the film. Like last year, tickets are available online (www.beloitfilmfest.org) or at the box office, 439 East Grand Avenue, in Downtown Beloit. Tickets are not available at the door. Tickets for each film are $12. New this year, for film junkies, is a season pass for $220. With ample, free parking, this makes the festival affordable for anyone’s budget. There are many restaurants in the immediate area, and many offer after-theatre seating with live entertainment at BIFF after dark. There are over 100 films on offer, and they are all listed on the website, www. beloitfilmfest.com. It’s always difficult to choose, so we’ve included reviews of eight films that we think you might enjoy. BIFF is a Top 100 Film Festival, and all of the films are of high quality. As always, there’s a good mix of comedy and drama, documentaries, and even a western!

BIFF has established several traditions, which are returning to this year’s festival: The Sing-A-Long film is The Wizard of Oz, Saturday, April 5, 7:30PM at Visit Beloit, Tickets $15. The Classic Film is The Princess Bride, Sunday, April 6, 2:30PM at Visit Beloit, Tickets free. Quint Studer and Beloit Sky Carp Baseball present Rudy, Thursday, April 3, 7:30PM at ABC Supply Stadium, Tickets $15 or $30 for a VIP ticket, including a buffet. The 1993 film is based on the story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, who dreamed of playing football for Notre Dame. Rudy Ruettiger will be present at the screening for a Q&A following the film.

This year’s honorary chairman is Diane Hendricks. No stranger to Beloit and an active promoter, businesswoman, and community leader, Ms. Hendricks has been supportive of BIFF from its start. During the festival, a 6-day filmmaking challenge is taking place. Entitled Beloit As Itself, BIFF will see several teams of filmmakers around the community competing for a $1000 prize. The results of their effort will be presented Saturday, April 5 at 12Noon, 5:00PM, and 7:30PM.

The Architects of Hope

United Kingdom, filmed in Ukraine. Rated PG. Directed by Paul Thomas and Produced by Steve Cole

What happens to Ukraine after the war? While British Architect Norman Foster visualized an international team of architects, Director Paul Thomas, who originally trained as an architect, wanted to focus on the projects of Ukrainian architects. The film discusses the work of five leading local architects and follows students from the Kharkiv School of Architecture.

Thomas’ education as an architect clearly helps him present a good overview of the restoration work being done and proposed. The tenor of the film is very upbeat and positive, despite the continuing Russian bombardment of the country. Ukraine is presented as a modern, sophisticated place, and one realizes it has been 35 years since independence from the Soviet Union. It is inspiring to watch these architects work, as they imagine building a bright Ukrainian future.

This film has won Best War Feature from the South Film and Arts Academy Festival and has been nominated for several other awards.

Architects of Hope screens with Infraction. Infraction is a PG-13-rated film based on the real-life story of Philadelphia native Terrance Lewis, who was imprisoned 21 years for a murder he did not commit.

The Compatriots

Directed by Spencer Cohen, Produced by Jennifer Potts, Sara Robin, Victoria Hersey, Alberto Sayan

Javi (Rafael Silva) was brought to the United States from Peru by his father at a very young age and is undocumented. Javi is a bright young man, who grew up in suburban America. The film begins with him pitching a no-hitter for his

high school baseball team. His best friend, Hunter, (Denis Shepherd) catches the game. The film quickly shifts five years later. Employment issues arise as Javi is offered a job as a history teaching assistant.

An old childhood rival of Javi’s contacts immigration authorities, attempting to have Javi deported and tries to secure a job with ICE as a quid-pro-quo. Hunter and his on-again-off-again girlfriend Tracy (Caroline Portu) try to help Javi resolve his problem. Javi is gay and Hunter, who is straight, offers to marry him.

The film convincingly presents Javi as a victim rather than a wrongdoer. It is well-produced, and the acting is good. The characters are relatable, even if the situations and plot seem at times to be a bit contrived.

This is a very timely coming-of age story, and is Spencer Cohen’s first feature film. The film is loosely based on the personal experiences of Cohen and his best friend, an undocumented immigrant. For his role as Javi, Rafael Silva was awarded Best Actor in a Feature Film at the Chelsea Film Festival.

February (Or:

Si Nos Dejan)

Rated PG-13. Directed by Nathan Deming and Produced by Adam Stunkle

A recent immigrant, Miguel (David Ezekiel Duran), lives with his sister’s family and struggles to fit into a small town in northern Wisconsin. He sees an ice fishing display in a store window. The proprietor rudely tells him to go learn about ice fishing at the public library, which he does.

His brother-in-law arranges for him to go ice fishing with a fisherman (Ritchie Gordon) who shows the novice how it’s done. The two men occupy a fishing shack on the ice overnight. Gradually, with limited language ability between them, they begin to bond while having a few drinks together.

This is a reasonably-entertaining, feelgood movie that makes the point that as people, we are more alike than different. It’s a matter of getting to know someone and finding commonality.

The film is envisioned by its director, Nathan Deming, as the second in a series of films about Wisconsin in the various months of the year. February won the Golden Beaver Award at the Wisconsin Film Festival.

February screens with Visions of Her. Visions of Her is a PG-rated film in which a man who has recently lost his wife travels to their favorite vacation spot. He mistakenly keeps seeing visions of her.

This leads to unexpected friendships that help him through the grieving process. Sat., Apr. 5, 2:30PM, Hendricks Art Center

Fire Department, Inc.

Rated PG. Directed by Colin C. Hughes and Produced by Caley Fox Shannon Mayor Hubert Hermanek of North Riverside, Illinois decided that outsourcing the fire department to the same company that managed the ambulance service would save his village a lot of money. The community was heavily dependent on retail sales tax collections for its revenue, and the local mall was struggling. Naturally, there is also a political dimension to the story as well. The film points out that there was no mention of privatizing the police department.

This documentary tells of the multiyear, multi-million-dollar struggle from the perspective of the firemen and their union. Director Colin Hughes personalizes the story by introducing us to several of the firefighters and their leadership. Many film clips and interviews are professionally woven into the narrative. The documentary attempts to be fair by giving the mayor and others a chance to offer their views as well.

Ultimately, through hard work and perseverance, this small group of firefighters ultimately saved their jobs with help from their union and firefighters throughout Illinois. Ironically, in the end, the private ambulance service contract was terminated, and the ambulance service was folded into the fire department.

Director Colin Hughes is the son of a Chicago firefighter and has strong loyalties toward organized labor, noting the benefits of a workforce able to afford a middle-class life. Living in an adjacent suburb, he is knowledgeable and well-qualified to tell this story.

While this offbeat (and often silly) romantic comedy is a bit predictable, it’s entertaining and has quite a few laughs. In the end, everyone is happy, including the audience.

Director Bibi Slippers is an award-winning poet, journalist and screenwriter. This is her first feature film.

Somnium

Rated R. Directed by Racheal Cain, Produced by Christopher Raby, Mike Hatton

Tired of waitressing at her parents’ diner in Georgia, Gemma (Chloë Levine) has come to Los Angeles to be an actress. Wearing a dress and hairstyle reminiscent of Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, she goes about pursuing a gig as an actress. She sees a help wanted sign at Somnium, a sleep clinic that makes your dreams come true. Side effects at Somnium include hallucinations, confusion, paranoia, sleep paralysis, detachment from reality, lost sense of self, and permanent nightmares. Times being what they are, she accepts the job as night watchman.

Ultimately, she does land a legitimate role as an actress at the end of the film, so perhaps Somnium really did make her dream come true after all. In the interim, we are treated to a dark, science-fiction/ horror film with some originality. The sleep clinic is an interesting vehicle for an unusual coming of age film in which Gemma faces her fears head on.

The film holds one’s attention and has a tight, disciplined screenplay. Somnium earned First Place in the LA Screenplay Competition before winning the 2024 Audience Award at the Chattanooga Film Festival, the Silver Audience Award at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, and Best Actress in a Feature at FilmQuest.

Tallywacker

Rated R. Directed by Brendan Boogie, Produced by Brendan Boogie, Jeremy Dubs, Chris Goodwin

Aleister (Jeremy Dubs) is an eager young guitar player who suffers from brittle bone disease and is wheelchair bound. He plays with drummer Emmett (Chris Goodwin) in a two-piece band called Tallywacker. Aleister has a quick, audacious personality that is genuinely funny. He lives with his mother, Bonnie (Laurie Mahoney) who has a serious addiction.

Tallywacker gets a chance to open for a major performer, Carly Major (Rivera Reese). Carly asks him to take over as guitar for her band. Aleister immediately accepts, much to the chagrin of his bandmate, Emmett, who becomes demoted from bandmate to roadie. A bartender, Scarlett (Adwoa Duncan-Williams) who Aleister met while playing accompanies the entourage. The new arrangements cause tension, which is diffused by humor and the sheer grit of Aleister to make it work.

The sound and music in the film is good and contributes to a solid, charming film. All of the characters in this film are relatable, with Aleister being irresistible. Filmed in black and white, this film has comedy, drama, romance, music, and is inspiring to boot! Genuinely fun to watch.

Tallywacker has won a special jury prize at the Independent Film Festival of Boston and the Film Club’s Lost Weekend Award for its soundtrack.

The War Between

Rated PG-13. Directed by Deborah Correa, Produced by Lenny Mesi, Deborah Correa, Jennifer Pfalzgraff

A classic Western set in the Arizona Desert during the Civil War. It’s the story of three men, Israel Terry, (Damian Conrad-Davis) separated from his Union regiment, Moses Jennings, (Sam Bullington), separated from his Confederate unit, and Great Seer (Wayne Charles Baker), an Apache, separated from his tribe. To survive, they must set their differences apart.

The cinematography is outstanding and a real treat. At times, the film seems to move slowly, but the pace enhances the loneliness of war and a desperate situation. From time to time, the men argue the political positions of their sides. The triviality of their politics is self-evident, as three men struggle to make it through a hostile desert in wartime. While the timeless message of the film comes through, it does not overshadow the action in the film.
