Poised for POP Attention-Generating Graphics

Point of purchase (POP) displays are a popular way for brands to set themselves apart in a retail environment. Modern print and finishing technologies continue to evolve, making the creative possibilities of POP limitless.

For many print providers, POP displays and graphics are a staple service offering. Renze is one such print service provider (PSP), offering building exhibits, event graphics, environmental graphics, corporate branding, as well as POP. The shop is committed to combining skilled craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to creatively and cost-effectively solve display marketing challenges for its clients.

Established in Omaha, NE in 1895, Renze is currently celebrating its 129th year in business.

The PSP employs a staff of 47 people and operates out

of a single, 90,000 square foot building in Omaha. Its client base is focused on the Midwest but it performs work all over the U.S.

From exhibit displays to windows and everything in between, Renze offers a diverse range of products. POP represents a good portion of this—about 20 to 25 percent of its total volume, estimates Doug Buchanan, president/owner, Renze.

As the name implies, POP allows marketers to capture a customer’s attention at the point of sale when money is in hand and a decision must be made, explains Buchanan. In these cases, it’s essential that graphics stand out and generate attention. Its POP roots date back nearly a century. “Early on, we hand painted store

signage but right around 1935 we started screenprinting and that included roadside signs like the famous Burma-Shave signs; billboard paper, which was shipped and then pasted on site; and taxi cab posters. Our company also printed on hard Masonite board for Vise-Grip tools, and we punched the holes to display the tools on hooks. For many years we screenprinted canvas that was sewn into tractor umbrellas and printed thousands of posters and decals,” recalls Buchanan.

While this particular application’s demand experienced a hit during pandemic lockdowns, Buchanan says POP graphics have witnessed a comeback since

COVID. “People are out shopping again and with the modern digital equipment providing vivid and colorful graphics often in large sizes we can catch customers’ attention in a very effective way. We believe that POP printing will continue to grow, helping companies standout in the crowded marketplace.”

Flatbed Capabilities

To generate its POP work, Renze seeks tools to set it up for success.

Five years ago, the PSP installed its first swissQprint flatbed printer and two years ago added another with neon ink. “This capability, along with opaque white, clear coat, and an additional orange printhead, gives us

a huge advantage over our competition offering vivid color with extremely fine dpi, which creates unmatched detail,” comments Buchanan. “swissQprint’s focus on quality, speed, vivid color, and its ability to print on a huge variety of materials makes it the perfect choice for POP work.”

Buchanan feels that its flatbed capabilities set Renze apart from the competition. “Renze was one of the first companies in the Midwest to purchase a flatbed rigid board printer back in 2007.”

It also operates a 126-inch Durst Image Technology US, LLC dyesublimation (dye-sub) fabric printer as well as a 64- and two

126-inch HP Inc. latex inkjet printers—both powered by Caldera RIP software.

For finishing it uses a fabric cutter and router by Zünd, and additional routing is handled with a Multicam, a Kongsberg PCS Company device. Its sewing is supported by two Miller Weldmaster sewing machines.

One of Renze’s latest POP success stories was for a 1,400 square foot flagship Jack Flash convenience store in Pana, IL. Established in 1986, the client is owned by Wortman Holdings, Inc. and headquartered in Effingham, IL with 18 locations in the Midwest and growing.

Wortman is a repeat customer of Renze. The client and PSP agreed upon a number of bright, colorful, and elegant backlit dye-sub POP displays to enhance the customer experience with visually appealing wayfinding signage in the Pana location.

“The owner saw our capabilities at a trade show and had the idea of implementing our back and frontlit signage solutions in their location,” shares Buchanan.

The Pana store graphics are the result of true collaboration between PSP and client. “Wortman collected product assets

from vendors and Renze was responsible for all the image work—outlines/interpolation—as well as creating Adobe Photoshop compilations with purchased environmental images,” explains Buchanan.

The design phase took about three weeks and the first full rollout was executed in 20 working days. This included fabrication, printing, finishing, as well as installation.

The end results were colorful and eye catching graphics that illuminate at night in the convenience store.

Initial feedback exceeded expectations, bringing a mix of graphic investment, general commitment to cleanliness, and an unique approach to the customer experience in a convenience store space. “This campaign proves the point that you never get a second chance to make a great first impression,” offers Buchanan.

A bonus, the light boxes themselves can serve for many years, and the fabric, if soiled, is machine washable.

Replacement fabric graphics can also be shipped, folded, and

changed in a matter of minutes with the originals stored to reinstall if needed. “These features make seasonal campaigns a breeze,” offers Buchanan.

Extending Past CMYK Flatbeds Enhance the Color Gamut

Digital flatbed printers offer colors beyond traditional CMYK. This includes green, orange, red, gray, violet, neons, and even white. The addition of any or all of these hues expands a print service provider’s (PSP’s) capabilities.

Adding to CMYK

Utilizing ink sets with more than CMYK is integral in meeting customer demands. With the extra pizzazz a specific green or neon color can add to graphic, it makes sense financially to offer the capability in house.

specialist, swissQprint America, says using colors beyond CMYK in flatbed printers presents versatility. “PSPs can select color channels that ‘wow’ clients and give them a competitive advantage.”

Today’s marketplace is competitive and presenting options like neon, green, violet, and orange provides a print shop with a one-up on the competition and keeps customers coming back. “As a print provider, you don’t want to have to turn down jobs simply because you can’t produce the exact colors your customers are looking for,” admits Jay Roberts, UV printer product manager, Roland DGA Corporation.

A Benefit for All

Certain applications benefit from using a flatbed that employs ink channels beyond traditional CMYK.

Singh lists examples like high-end marketing for luxury brands, real estate agencies, and high-profile events. Fine art reproductions benefit as well. “Artists and galleries require accurate color reproduction for their masterpieces. The expanded gamut offered by these inks ensures exceptional quality.”

Accordingly, “PSPs with multiple customers who need to match corporate and brand colors or obtain graphics featuring hues beyond the

normal CMYK spectrum benefit more by having a flatbed with a wider color gamut than others. Producing packaging prototypes or short runs is one example where the ability to match more colors accurately or achieve a greater range of colors is a real advantage. Serving customers that require consistency throughout entire print campaigns also allows the PSP to take advantage of a wider gamut that includes colors like orange, red, and green,” shares Roberts.

“If used in a creative way, there is always benefit in adding visual interest, expanded gamut, texture, spot gloss, or any other application

possible with inks beyond CMYK,” states Currier.

Erik Norman, president, swissQprint America, argues that anyone can benefit from colors beyond CMYK and all PSPs should utilize a flatbed that is capable of doing so. “Currently not every printer does, and they’re limiting their capability and opening themselves up to lose business to printers who are producing a wider color gamut.”

A Pop in Price

Generally, orange, red, gray, violet, green, and neon ink come with a higher price tag. But, viewing them as a premium product, an

up charge is justified for jobs that utilize any of these colors.

Specialty colors cost more, according to Currier because they are in addition to CMYK. Also, depending on the color, they may be made up of more expensive pigments.

“These colors do come with a small premium, due to their higher manufacturing cost. This additional cost is easily recovered through the increased revenue printers generate when selling the additional capabilities they enable,” continues Norman.

Singh says “the unique value justifies the investment. A reasonable

up charge can be implemented when utilizing these inks. Clients seeking extraordinary results appreciate the added value.”

It’s important to note that not all ink manufacturers vary the price of their ink colors. For example, Epson keeps costs consistent regardless of color. In this scenario, Lopez explains that it is then up to the PSPs to determine if they should up charge.

“When determining final output costs, providers should consider factors such as market competition and customer demand before determining potential up charges,” advises Lopez.

Care and Keeping

Many specialty inks like neons or even violet, gray, red, orange, and green have varying chemical compositions, which means their maintenance may need to be handled differently than traditional CMYK.

“Many times these colors do require more attention and intervention on the printer side of things, but it’s important to mention that the front end (prepress) preparation time is important as well—color presets/RIP configuration and general color management,” advises Thomas Giglio, NA, HP Latex business segment leader, HP Inc.

FLATBED PRINTERS—OVER 24 INCHES IN WIDTH

If an ink involves larger pigment particles—something historically seen with white ink—it needs to stay suspended, which requires maintenance, explains Currier. This is more at the printhead itself however, and also at the ink tank level to agitate the ink so it remains in suspension.

Singh says regular printer maintenance is crucial no matter the ink type. “Educating your team on the proper handling of these inks ensures optimal performance and longevity. Colors beyond CMYK may not necessarily require additional attention.”

Moving Beyond

Flatbed printers equipped with specialty inks like green, orange, red, gray, violet, and neon offer print providers a unique opportunity. They are able to provide customers with an expanded color gamut as well as ensure accurate color representation. D

hort-term, indoor wall graphic applications are intended to be in place for a limited amount of time. Digitally printed graphics offer a unique combination of durability and removability.

“Short-term wallcoverings last anywhere from a few days to a few years and are a perfect option for people who want to transform their environment without a long-term commitment,” states Michelle Oczkowski, product manager, Brand Management Group.

Defining this length of installation, the consensus is that “short term” refers to as short as one day to as long as a year. Wallcoverings of this nature are found everywhere from retail spaces to trade shows. Materials are chosen based on their ability to offer durability as well as an adhesive technology that delivers clean removability.

Short-Term Definition

The phrase short term is important to define before going forward. It seems depending on who you ask, it refers to a maximum placement of one year, with an average of around three to six months, all the way to a timeframe as short as one day.

“The use of short term when describing the type of wallcovering is a pretty broad term,” admits Molly Waters, senior technical specialist, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions. “We would qualify this as less than one year, and in reality it is more like one to three months.”

According to Vince Queau, senior sales representative, Monadnock Paper Mills, a “limited” timeframe for short-term wallcoverings is considered anything less than three months, as “this supports the needs of quarterly promotions and is adaptable to the varying durations of temporary retail spaces, exhibitions, and events.”

“Extending the definition to cover up to three months might offer more flexibility for applications that require a slightly longer display time, such as seasonal decorations or longer term marketing campaigns, while still maintaining the essence of being short term. This broader range can accommodate a wider variety of user needs and scenarios,” adds Roy Ritchie, president, DreamScape.

Michelle Kempf, VP, sales and marketing, Continental Grafix USA, Inc., takes it a step further—stating that while Continental Grafix considers short term three months or less, installations shorter than a month

are considered in a category all on their own, as “temporary.”

“Wallcoverings installed for a limited amount of time, short term or temporary, may only be in place for days to less than six months. The advertising cycle for promotions typically changes every 30, 60, or 90 days and if the contract for the advertising space is longer, for a year or more, the brand will be required to refresh their graphics periodically,” explains Jodi Sawyer, senior business development manager, Flexcon.

Even in place for up to six months, Walter Gierlach, president, Photo Tex Group Inc., still considers a wallcovering job short term.

A distinction in defining short term is that it differs between applications. “In transit advertising we look at short term being anything that is in place for up to a year, but wallcoverings for temporary advertising, event, or trade show graphics can be up for as little as a few hours to a few weeks,” points out Jay Kroll, product manager for cut, transit, and wall solutions, General Formulations.

Now You See It

Short-term, indoor wallcoverings are found in home décor, retail point of purchase (POP), and event spaces. These are ideal scenarios for a number of reasons.

POP and advertising commonly rely on wallcoverings. “Use of printed graphics in a mall or retail setting includes blocking the entrance of a store that is in the process of a build out or remodel. We call this application ‘barricade

graphics’ and are temporary for this type of setting,” shares Waters.

Pop-up shops are an example of retail utilizing wallcoverings for a limited amount of time. “Due to their temporary nature, these environments are often set up for a few days to a few months to capitalize on seasonal shopping trends or to test new markets,” adds Ritchie.

Angel Georgiou, senior product marketing specialist, large format group, Canon U.S.A., Inc., agrees that POP and even restaurants use wall graphics in different ways, and seasonal graphics are most common, which makes short-term walloverings ideal.

“Historically, short-term wallcoverings started in retail POP, but have expanded into special event/sports signage, home décor, museum displays, airport advertising, and various hospitality areas,” states Brian Ebenger, VP of business development, XCEL.

Amanda Smith, marketing and communications manager, Mactac, points out another opportunity for short-term wallcovering use is temporary installations in theaters, movie sets, and other creative spaces. The materials thrive in these spaces as “ they are designed to be easily installed and removed without damaging the surface or leaving any residue.”

Planned gatherings like a charity event, birthday, or corporate party may feature a backdrop or a photo booth. “These have the shortest use time ranging from two to five hours,” explains Kate McKeever, director of marketing, PrestoTex.

“Events are ideal scenarios for short-term applications because they have pre-determined beginning and end dates and can span multiple venues all requiring graphics,” says Kempf.

A sub-category of events is trade shows. “Short-term wallcoverings are regularly seen in trade show convention spaces, adorning walls in halls and backdrops in booths,” shares Kroll.

Corporate environments and educational institutions are two other places short-term wallcoverings are seen. “Businesses may use short-term wallcoverings in office environments for temporary branding, corporate events, or office renovations. These wallcoverings can feature company logos, inspirational quotes, or temporary wayfinding signage. Educational institutions often utilize shortterm wallcoverings for temporary displays, student artwork exhibitions, or educational events,” notes Mike Richardson, business development manager, graphics media, Jessup Manufacturing Company.

At the Base

When it comes to short-term wallcoverings, base materials include non-vinyl films like polyester and polypropylene (PP), fabric, vinyl, and paper-based substrates made from cellulose fiber.

Smith says ideal materials are those that are lightweight, flexible, and offer a smooth surface. This includes vinyl, polyester, and PP. “These materials are often preferred because they are easy to install and remove and do not damage the underlying surface.

OVERLAMINATE DEBATE

If a wallcovering graphic is in place for a limited amount of time, the extra cost and time spent on an overlaminate is prohibitive.

According to Brian Ebenger, VP of business development, XCEL, overlaminates were originally designed to serve two purposes—protect the image and add rigidity to the material for an easier install. “With improved ink technology, laminates are not necessary to protect inks in most applications. And media for wallcoverings has expanded into thicker films to help support ease of application.”

Overlaminates may or may not be used depending on the application’s desired finish. For example, an overlaminate could detract from certain textured materials or even add unwanted glare, according to Jason Leonard, senior product manager – digital print, Neenah, a Mativ Brand.

Alternatively, a laminate can be used to positively impact the finish of the film— “adding an extra gloss, matte finish, or sparkle,” shares Molly Waters, senior technical specialist, Avery Dennison Graphics Solutions.

While not necessary, overlaminates are helpful in other ways. “An overlaminate may allow the graphics to be easily cleaned or protect against graffiti in high-traffic or sensitive areas,” explains Michelle Kempf, VP, sales and marketing, Continental Grafix USA, Inc.

“In many cases, graphics aren’t up for long enough to require the additional protection of a laminate. That said, areas of high foot traffic can require extra reassurance, which is why a range of suitable protective laminates are available,” says Mark de Lancey, regional sales manager, Drytac Europe.

Mike Richardson, business development manager, graphics media, Jessup Manufacturing Company, summarizes, “while not always mandatory, an overlaminate provides benefits such as added durability, protection, enhanced aesthetics, ease of maintenance, and extended lifespan. It’s essential to consider these factors when determining whether to incorporate an overlaminate into the design and production of short-term wallcoverings.”

Additionally, they offer vibrant and long-lasting colors essential for designs and promotions requiring a high visual impact.”

“Short-term wallcoverings are best suited with the use of a 3- to 6-mil thick peel-and-stick vinyl. These options come with a range of adhesive technologies designed for ease of installation and the guarantee of clean removal,” states Kroll.

Richardson agrees that vinyl, particularly self-adhesive vinyl, is popular due to its versatility and ease of installation. “It comes in

various finishes, including matte, gloss, and satin, and can be printed with vibrant graphics and designs.

Self-adhesive vinyl is durable and withstands moderate handling.”

Meanwhile Oczkowski stresses the benefits of adhesive-backed fabric.

“Adhesive fabric is an ideal choice for short-term wallcoverings. Its primary advantage lies in its easy removal and reapplication without causing any harm to the substrate.”

“We strongly believe the more sustainable a product can be the more responsible it is, especially for

short-term applications. Neenah’s products are cellulose based so they are not a plastic or vinyl. Although they are latex saturated for strength, the bulk of the material is paper based, leaving a greatly reduced impact on the environment,” notes Jason Leonard, senior product manager – digital print, Neenah, a Mativ Brand.

When determining the right base material for a job, graphic size, surface type, desired aesthetics, installer expertise, and the indoor environment are all factors to consider, according to Sawyer. “Different base materials provide different physical properties and performance characteristics that impact application use.”

“The base material selection is influenced by the aesthetics that the brand desires. On a vertical interior wall, glare from lighting can be a challenge for gloss base materials, therefore, most times, the use of a matte finish is desired. For a rich feel and soft muted look, pressure-sensitive adhesive fabric products are well suited for home décor and high-end retail or hotel/ casinos. The white point of the base materials, the hue—white or blue, can enhance the creative. For example, a base material that is a more yellow hue provides a good base for a natural/skin tone look,” continues Sawyer.

Ritchie argues that “with a shortterm application for three months or less, the adhesive type and performance are more important than the base substrate.”

“Typically, low-cost base materials are used for short term to keep

costs down and win competitively priced work. However, the most important decision when it comes to short-term wallcoverings is the choice of adhesive as this determines how cleanly the graphic removes after use,” admits Mark de Lancey, regional sales manager, Drytac Europe.

Get Sticky

Adhesive technology is important because the graphic must stick, but also remove cleanly. “Adhesion technology is critical in the installation and removal process. Adhesive recommendations vary based on the overall application expectations. However, it is critical for removal to be simple and leave minimal residue,” admits Ebenger.

Sawyer notes that the process involves selecting “an adhesive with the right tack and peel adhesion strength to bond securely to the wall that also has the right chemistry, an affinity to the base film or fabric, which enables the adhesive to stay with it and remove cleanly from the surface.”

“It’s the whole chemistry of film, adhesive, and liner that creates the ideal solution. Adhesive thickness, film rigidity, liner release—all play a role in the total process from print and cut to application and, ultimately, removal,” adds Kroll.

Make Way for Microsphere

Short-term wallcoverings use both standard PSA and microsphere adhesion technologies.

“Standard PSA technology is used for short-term wallcoverings. However, microsphere adhesive technology is becoming increasingly

popular due to its easy and clean removal,” admits Smith.

Microsphere adhesives are a good option, agrees Kroll, “as the adhesive itself has small acrylic beads that allow for a controlled bond with the wall surface and clean repositionability, removability, and even reusability in most cases.”

“This technology ensures the wallcoverings can be applied, removed, and repositioned without leaving residue or damaging the underlying surface, offering a distinct advantage for temporary installations,” says Ritchie.

Microsphere technology is known for its breathability. “This allows for air to pass through eliminating the need for air egress channels securing more surface space for grip. The breathability also makes installation easier and quicker,” explains Leonard.

It’s possible to combine the best attributes of PSA and microsphere. “At Jessup, our proprietary adhesive technology for short-term wallcoverings combines the best aspects of PSA and microsphere technologies to deliver exceptional performance, versatility, and ease of use,” shares Richardson.

Finally, strippable pre-pasted adhesives are an option. This is familiarly found on fabric-based wallcoverings. “A significant advantage of our pre-pasted wallcoverings is the absence of liner waste, simplifying the installation process and eliminating concerns about disposal post installation. This contributes to a cleaner, more efficient application and removal

process, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and customer convenience,” notes Queau.

Stay or Go

A focus for short-term graphics is the balance of the adhesive being sticky enough to remain in place for the duration of the graphic but also remove cleanly.

This is often accomplished with a strong initial tack combined with a residue-free removal. DreamScape’s microsphere adhesive achieves this through “tiny spheres dispersed with the glue particles. These physical spheres help to control the level of bond once dried. Unlike most other emulsiontype adhesives, the microsphere never really fully bonds to the wall as only the tips of the spheres touch the surface,” explains Ritchie.

Reiterating his earlier statement about everything working together—base, liner, adhesive—Kroll explains that “the adhesive needs to have enough initial tack to bite the surface to allow for the release liner to be cleanly and easily pulled and removed, but not so easy that the liner falls off during the process. You also don’t want it to be too tight to where pulling the liner causes your graphic to stretch and panels become misaligned.”

roductivity is essential to a successful sign shop. While much attention is paid to how many feet per minute a wide format printer can produce, finishing is a crucial part of the puzzle. Luckily, manufacturers of router/cutters as well as laser machines focus on speed and precision to eliminate finishing bottlenecks on a production floor.

Optimal Options

Countless manufacturers offer cutting solutions for wide format print service providers (PSPs) handling a variety of materials, from corrugate to plastics, fabrics, and everything in between.

Colex Finishing, Inc.’s Sharpcut SXC1732 is its flagship cutter. According to Keith Verkem, national sales manager/product manager, Colex, this

“A knife blade is only as good as the tool that holds it,” says Josh Hope, senior manager, segment marketing, Mimaki USA, Inc. “The tool holder must be manufactured to high tolerance to not only be precise but also consistent. A business cannot be productive if it can’t trust that the tools will perform accurately and consistently at every step in the finishing process. Equally important is having a range of tool options that properly match the finishing task with the substrate. A creasing wheel that is too small, or a blade that is at the wrong angle will cause endless frustration and lost productivity.”

In addition to standard or optional tooling through the OEM, third-party tools are available.

and more cost-e ective pricing. “Without third-party suppliers of tooling, OEMs were able to set the price and quality for their specific machine without any pushback or challenge. Competition is good for any industry, it is the driver of innovation, and of course, be er pricing for the consumer. With the influx of competition, it has driven everyone involved to develop be er products, and new products, which have solved issues with problematic applications and materials. Overall, it most definitely improved the overall finish on wide format digital printed substrates.”

Furthermore, Pagelow feels that third-party suppliers such as VTX Tools typically carry a wider range of consumables than the OEMs, allowing for centralized purchasing for customers that have multiple flatbed digital cu ing systems from more than one manufacturer.

“In addition we o en field customer requests for custom engineered tooling that is specific to their applications. This is something that the OEMs will rarely engage in,” concludes Pagelow.

It is critical that equipment is manufactured with accuracy in mind, believes Hope. The Mimaki CFX cutting plotters employ a ball screw on the Z-axis that allows for not only high pressure, but also highly accurate cuts with less breakage over multiple cuts. In addition, the CFX Series has a backside cutting mode—patent pending, which is available when combined with an optional camera unit. The system uses the camera unit to recognize registration marks printed on the surface and material edges.

The Zünd Q-Line offers a specified speed of 2.8 meters per second. “Beyond machine speed, however—the trees, if you will—there is always the forest to consider, i.e. the digital workflow as a whole that is responsible for converting printed substrates into finished/ cut pieces and products. A lot of Zünd’s recent developments are devoted to workflow automation because if there isn’t an efficient and reliable overall production workflow in place, any gains in raw cutting speed are effectively annihilated,” explains Drury.

There are also achievements on the laser side of wide format cutting. “Achieving high speed and precision in today’s large format laser cutting systems is indeed a reality, thanks to significant technological advancements in laser sources,” comments White.

These include high-performance servo motors and drivers with a belt driven X-axis, which give Kern Laser Systems’ machines the capability to reach speeds up to 150 inches per second (ips) for engraving and cutting speeds of up to 20 ips.

“When processing materials at high speed it is important to choose a powerful laser that will not limit the speed you are able to cut or engrave at. Another important characteristic of the laser is size and weight. The laser should be compact and lightweight in design so it can be installed on a large format machine without negatively impacting the performance of the system,” recommends White.

SEI Laser’s X-Series of laser plotters deliver speeds of up to 300 mpm, which Leibin attests is double the fastest speeds of competitors’ newest machines. “The SEI Laser X-Series features brandnew cartesian movement of the laser head obtained by two carbon fiber axes, driven by four high-performance linear motors to deliver lightning fast speeds and high accuracy cutting performance.”

Considerations for Cutting

When investing in a cutter, there are many considerations, from investment cost to productivity, accuracy, safety, uptime, and footprint. When narrowing it down based on speed and precision, finishing vendors have worked hard to ensure that one is not sacrificed for the other with strategic advancements in everything from workflow to media handling.
