Dear Villagers After a long summer and a very hectic few weeks, it is wonderful to be able to write this from my desk in The Rectory at Hanley Broadheath. Thank you for the very warm welcome we have received and we look forward to getting to know you all over the coming weeks and new beginnings.

However, this month our thoughts, as individuals, churches and as a nation, turn to remembering. In our Church calendar the 2nd November is known as All Souls Day, when we remember and give thanks for our loved ones who have died. On 11th November we are commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War. This will be a dual act – of remembrance for those who fought and died in war and conflict and also a thanksgiving for peace.

Our day ends with lighting the beacon at Hanley Childe. Do join in if you can.

As we remember those who have gone before us, many of us naturally think of heaven.

During the month of November we move into what is known at the Kingdom season. This gives us a chance to reflect on the Kingdom of Heaven as something that breaks into our world, in terms of the values which Jesus showed us – peace, justice, righteousness and love and joy. He calls us to share in that Kingdom now, here on earth. Working for its values by the way we live our lives, the way we treat others, by how we seek to serve the common good and make our communities better places in which to live. I wonder how each of us might play our part making the Kingdom of Heaven present here on earth this November?

FFF – Extra Helpings

Our next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be at Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 1st November at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by supper and a period of study using a text.

Everyone is welcome to this social evening.

Please try to come – you won’t regret it. The one after this will be on 6th December.

All Souls' Service

We will be holding our traditional service on All Souls' Day, 2nd November, at 6pm at Rochford Church. Recently bereaved will receive invitations from the pastoral team to attend and have their relation's name read out and they will also be able to light a candle for them. Anyone is welcome to attend and remember their departed family and friends.

Remembrance Sunday

Eastham, Rochford and Stanford will hold services starting at 10.45am on Sunday 11th November with a view to our all observing a two-minute silence at 11am in our churches. We are hoping that by localising this service we will persuade local people to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. If you have a local connection with your church, please try to attend.

There will also be a service at Hanley Childe at 6pm followed by the lighting of a beacon at 7pm and the ringing of bells – this will be repeated across the country. Everyone is welcome to attend this celebration.

Harvest thanks

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to create a lovely display in Kyre church for the harvest and to Sally and Brian for the service and music. This was the opening to the service, and so appropriate as we live and breathe in this area.

For the sweetness of soil from which we come and to which we will return For the openness of air which we breathe and sometimes walk upon.

For the release of water that bubbles and streams and sometimes questions For the surprise of fire that kindles and flames, is fearsome and bold and sometimes lights up faces with laughter.

We give thanks with joy and wonder May we see in these elements our need, our fulfilment and belonging.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

We are delighted to report that we raised £327 for the Macmillan Nurse Appeal at the coffee morning on 3rd October. Thanks to everyone who came along and gave so generously. The next coffee morning is on Wednesday 7th November.

Autumn clean and licensing service

Thanks to everyone who came and helped with the churchyard and others who came in the afternoon to clean the church and do the flowers for Julia’s licensing service. The rain poured all day on Sunday 14th October but at 5pm the sun came out to welcome the busload of Julia’s old congregation to a wonderful service of licensing with Bishop John,Archdeacon Nikki and a church full of visitors from far and near. The bells rang, the organ played a few new tunes and we gave Julia a good Teme Valley South welcome. Thanks to everyone involved, especially to Ann for the wonderful afternoon tea and buffet afterwards.

Armistice Day in Eastham

Eastham will be marking this day with a church service at 10.45am led by Michael Brierley. Following the service we will join people around the world in ringing the bells at 12.30pm to replicate, 100 years on, the spontaneous outpouring of relief in 1918 as news of the armistice spread and church bells, which had fallen silent across the UK during the war, rang out in celebration. We will be welcoming the families of some of the boys from Eastham who gave their lives in the Great War. We are still looking for a trumpeter to play the Last Post.

The church collection will go to the British Legion Poppy Appeal in memory of Gladys and Jack Hill who sold many poppies in Eastham over the years.

Armistice Day lunch

Join us for a special 100 years on commemorative armistice day lunch at Eastham Memorial Hall at 12.30 for 1pm. This is not a fund raiser.

There will be roast beef and pork and a vegetarian option with all the trimmings and a delicious selection of puddings, tea and coffee.

Coffee Morning Christmas Lunch

The Eastham Coffee Morning ran for 20 years from 1974, steered by the late Mary Brinton, and since then Good Neighbours have met on the first Wednesday of every month for the last 24 years.

This year we are in 1994 mode and following the Good Neighbours tradition we look to Mary Ramsden who explained in the Millennium Book that the ethos of the event was to be non-profit making. However with lots of goodies for the bring and buy and a monthly raffle, there was a small profit enabling all the Good Neighbours to have a lovely Christmas lunch.

So in 1994 tradition please comes along on 7th November from 10.30 onwards and collect your ticket for Christmas lunch on Wednesday 5th December which is free for regulars. If you are not a regular attender, we are happy to take a donation. Lunch is a Phil special – this year a hot meal.

Hanley Happenings

Hanley Village Supper

Table tennis

Hanley Village Supper will be at Hanley Village Hall on Saturday 10th November at 7pm. There will be typical First World War food and mystery guest entertainment and a singalong. Tickets are £12.50 from Maureen Studer or Carole Gardner – they are usually snapped up so please book early, either as individuals or for a group table.

Table tennis at 7.30 on Monday evenings at Hanley Village Hall continues to be enjoyed by a number of people who would be pleased to see new faces. Come along and join in the fun and meet new friends.

We will be lighting a beacon at Church Farm, Hanley Childe at 7pm on Sunday 11th November, courtesy of Ed Yarnold. At 6pm, we’ll be gathering at the small church at Hanley Childe for a short Remembrance Service to remember those who served for their country and those who died in both World Wars. We hope to be able to welcome as many guests as possible – there is no charge but please bring food to share outdoors.

Our regular monthly services

On Sunday 4th November and Sunday 2nd December at 10am we have our usual service of Communion and hymns.

Remembrance Sunday

Our morning in Stanford will start with a said Communion at 10am. Our Remembrance Service will start at 10.45am and include the traditional two minutes’ silence at 11am. John Lane is encouraging all those who have had a connection with the village to attend. Anyone will be very welcome. After the service we are retiring to the village hall for lunch – we have decided that the meal will be complimentary to those attending the service but we would be happy to receive donations. Please bring your own drinks.

Later in the day there is a service at Hanley Childe church at 6pm to which everyone is invited – this will be followed by the lighting of a beacon and ringing of bells which will be repeated across the land!

Monthly whist drives

The second of our monthly whist drives will be on Thursday 15th November starting at 7.30pm. Our hall is warm and we have comfy chairs. Come along, it’s great sun. Everyone is welcome, especially if you are new to whist.

Entry is £3 to include tea and biscuits. Subsequent whist drives will be on 15th November, 20th December, 17th January, 21st February, 21st March and 18th April.

Harvest Service

34 people attended the Harvest Service taken

by Jackie Hughes. Half of the collection of £171.50 is to be given to Farmers Overseas Action Group (FOAG), a locally based charity supporting the people of rural Uganda with medical, educational and agricultural assistance. Many thanks to Jackie for an uplifting service and to Mary for playing the organ.

32 people came to the Harvest Supper and it was good to welcome some who had not come to the service. A first course of hot gammon with parsley sauce, potatoes and peas was prepared by Janet Mills. This was followed by an assortment of delicious desserts. Many thanks to Janet and her team (Brian, Harry, May, Alexandra, Milly and Ann) who served the food and cleared up. Thanks to those who prepared and gave the desserts – a certain person was seen having several helpings. Nursey will not be pleased with him! Thanks to Chris for general tidying up!

These are still available from Robin. The picture on the front is the Madonna and Child stained glass window in St Mary’s. The printed greeting inside is “Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year”. Flowers – We still need people to arrange the flowers in the church. With the church open every day, the flowers need to be refreshed regularly. We are looking for people to take on one of the monthly 'slots' – can you help? If so please contact Lesley on 01886 853295.

Church Committee – two people have recently joined the Committee but we would welcome some more. Robin (01886 853295) is happy to explain what is involved and you are welcome to one of our meetings so that you can see what it is like.We need people to organise events and assist.

What would you like to do this winter? Bingo, films (someone has suggested a film about hop picking and we will consider this) ... or am I wasting my time – does anyone read this stuff?

Thankful Villages

We have recently returned from a few days touring around the Peak District National Park; the scenery was stunning.

On a trip like this we usually visit a church or two. This time we came upon Butterton (about five miles east of Leek) which is a Thankful Village from which all the members of the armed forces survived the First World War. In October 2013 researchers identified 53 Thankful Villages in England and Wales; fourteen were considered doubly thankful as they lost no servicemen during the Second World War. Our nearest Thankful Villages are Knill, near Presteigne and Middleton-on-the-Hill, near Leominster, which has a stone column in St Mary’s churchyard commemorating that all their men returned safely from both wars.

Rev Julia Curtis licensed at Eastham 14th October dawned cold and wet but by 5pm we had a sunny evening. A contingent of about 40 arrived on a huge coach from Taunton, where Julia served her curacy, and had afternoon tea before the service at 6.30. Eastham church was full (about 100) and there was a procession of about 20 priests including Bishop John, followed by a procession to introduce Julia to the Bishop. Julia was duly licensed and sworn in. Archdeacon Nikki gave an uplifting sermon, Julia was formally greeted by representatives of a number of local organisations and was presented with the symbols of her office. The congregation then processed out and were greeted by Julia and Archdeacon Nikki at the door.

Teme Valley Wildlife Back in September I mentioned some slug and snail control methods in an article about slug pellets and hedgehogs. Imagine my dismay, when I opened the paper today, to see a headline announcing “Gardeners are losing war on slugs�. The Royal Horticultural Society has released the results of a study which found that many commonly used remedies (yes, including those that I had recommended) make absolutely no difference in protecting lettuces against slugs. In the interests of clarity and accuracy I therefore withdraw my previous advice!

Five remedies that the researchers tested, and found wanting, were copper tape, horticultural grit, pine bark mulch, wool pellets and eggshells. Their test methods were painstaking.

They grew 108 lettuces for 6 weeks, then harvested them and measured the slug damage. The only good news about this study is that the RHS has got as many slugs as I have! They concluded that removing slugs by hand and setting traps to facilitate this, were effective, as were the use of nematodes and slug pellets (which they applied within strict wildlife-damage-limiting

guidelines). They also suggested encouraging birds into the garden to help with the physical removal side of things, although they did not test any bird-friendly measures in a scientific way.

After the September article came out I had an interesting chat with a local farmer who told me about a project that has been running in the valley over the last few years.

Severn Trent Water regularly measures pollutant levels in the River Teme and has introduced a scheme whereby farmers can be paid a small fee to switch from metaldehyde to ferrous oxide for slug control on their crops.

Ferrous oxide is safer for the environment, but still toxic to slugs, and can be used at lower densities of pellets than metaldehyde, although it is more expensive. I was delighted to find that Teme Valley farmers are ahead of the curve and leading the way for gardeners and wildlife enthusiasts. Coincidentally, our local farmer has recently spotted a hedgehog hiding up in his out-buildings and is currently treating it to cat-food, what more can Continued on page 24
