Dear Villagers We live in ‘interesting times’ it feels. With, dare I mention it, the Brexit deadline falling on the 29th of this month – if indeed it hasn’t been extended by the time TemeTalk is printed! In these times of uncertainty around our political future it brings me a great deal of comfort that our church has a rhythm and pattern of living that goes beyond the whims and fads of a political term of office. Each church year is split into seasons and the order of these has remained fixed for centuries and people of each generation are called to find a way of living out the church’s seasons that are meaningful for them.

On 6th March we start the six-week season of Lent in the church calendar, which will lead us up to Holy Week and Easter Sunday. The season of Lent gives us time to prepare for the events of Easter with the death of Jesus and then His resurrection. We may give up certain foods, try to focus more on God during this time, we can read special Lent books, do a Lent course or spend more time in regular prayer and reflection. All of these are ideas that might help us draw closer to God during this time.

And drawing closer to God is what Lent is all about.

Lent is not a time of pious self-denial, but a wonderful chance to do things a little differently. Why not seek out God in creation by committing to a daily walk or try and look for opportunities to see and photograph crosses as you go about daily life? If you do, you may be surprised at just how many things align to this Continued on page 3

Thanks to all who support our parish

At a recent meeting of our Teme Valley South treasurers we reflected on saying ‘thank you’ to all those who contribute in any way to the lives of our churches. As a parish of seven rural churches we are very grateful for all the money, time and practical help willingly given, without which the worship, mission and ministry we offer simply would not be possible. So thank you for everything. However large or small you might feel your contribution is, it all makes a difference.

FFF – Extra Helpings

Our next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be held at Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 7th March at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by supper and a period of study using a text.

Everyone is welcome to this social evening.

Special services

During March we begin Lent with an Ash Wednesday Communion Service at 6pm at St Mary’s Stanford, offering Ashing for those who would like it. We celebrate Mothering Sunday at Café Church on 31st March at Hanley Village Hall, with tea and coffee and bacon rolls from 9.30am. Do come along to either or both of these if you are able.

Weekly prayers and reflections

Our weekly prayers and reflections on Wednesdays at 10am at Rochford Church will include Communion during Lent. These are very informal and you would be very welcome to come along and give them a try.

Lent group

Dave Hughes has agreed to continue leading a group in reflection on Handel’s Messiah, as we move through Lent. This will take place at the Rectory from 2 to 3pm for four Thursdays, starting on 7th March. If you are unable to make them all, you would be very welcome to come along to just some.

Our prayers and sympathy go to the family and friends of Peter Richard Moseley whose funeral was on 4th February at Worcester Crematorium, and also of Nancy Pound who died on 11th February. May they both rest in peace.

Scratch choir

If you are looking for a new activity that is healthy and fun, have you thought about singing? We have been approached by a musician who is interested in leading a small choir for us in Teme Valley South, so we’re are finding out levels of interest. This would not be a weekly commitment, rather a few rehearsals and then singing as part of the choir in a service or event. Contact Rev Julia if you might be interested. Thank you for those who have expressed an interest – we need just three more people to have a viable group, so it’s not too late to sign up!

This month’s cover photograph of the daffodils in the churchard at St Mary’s, Stanford, was taken very early on Easter morning last year by Barbara Williams, who had attended the 6.15am service. Barbara writes: “I remember my mum, who was born Bertha Yeomans at Stanford in 1910, telling me that when she was a little girl at school, now the village hall, the children were taken up to the church to plant daffodils in the graveyard, and that is the result you see today. Obviously they have now spread and turned wild.”

Snowdrop Songs of Praise

The Snowdrop Songs of Praise was a lovely service as always. It’s wonderful to sing the hymns we all know and love. Thank you to our visiting organist Hannah for leading us.

Everyone is welcome to come and help with the spring clean of the churchyard on Saturday 27th April from 10am to 12.30pm, followed by barbecue. In the afternoon tidying up for the summer months, dusters and mops are needed from 2 to 4pm, with tea and cakes at 4pm.

Eastham Coffee Morning

Eastham Good Neighbours Coffee Morning is held on the first Wednesday of each month. In February due to the non availability of Eastham Village Hall, we are delighted to report that our trip up the hill to Hanley Village Hall turned out to be a very successful event with 37 visitors. A lovely sunny morning encouraged a great attendance and a very pleasant couple of hours were spent chatting and enjoying the coffee. Many thanks to many friends from Hanley who joined us and to the Committee for allowing us to use Hanley Village Hall. In fact it was so successful that we will be holding the March coffee morning at Hanley to see if we can top over 40 people this time – do come along from Eastham, Hanley and beyond and join in a very informal and casual gathering and catch up with neighbours old and new.

Hanley Happenings Thanks

Table tennis at Hanley Village Hall is going well and we have a friendly and fit team of regular players.

Well done to them! They are pleased to welcome new faces and with three tables everyone has an opportunity to play at least one game of doubles or singles.

If you would like to join in the fun come along on a Monday evening at 7pm, bats and balls are provided. Your first taster session is free. At £3 per evening there isn’t a better way to make new friends and keep fit.

Hanley Village Hall committee would like to thank Bob and Maureen Studer for all their hard work and selfless efforts for the hall and its community over the past two decades. Despite moving to Tenbury, we know that they will continue to support events in the village whenever possible. We wish them every happiness.

Keep Hanley tidy!

We hope we’ll have a good turnout to help clear the litter around our community on 13th April.

Bags, high vis jackets and litter pickers are available at the hall from 10.30am. Soup and cake at lunchtime to thank those who give up a couple of hours to clear up others’ rubbish!

The AGM of the village hall will take place on 2nd May at 7.30pm. Please come along if you would like to be involved with any of the activities in our hall. It really isn’t difficult and meetings are few and far between.

Friday Market

We look forward to seeing old friends and new at the Friday Market. It’s held throughout the year until mid December with produce, refreshments and good company. Our Easter event will as usual be on Good Friday– can we really be talking about hot cross buns and Easter eggs already?

We start Lent with a parish-wide Ashing service at St Mary's on Ash Wednesday (6th March) at 6pm. Before Easter we will hold a parish-wide Maundy Thursday service at St Mary's on 18th April at 6.30pm. We will not be holding our usual Dawn Service on Easter Sunday as dawn is at 5.30am

Monthly whist drives

Our next monthly whist drive in the village hall will be on Thursday 21st March starting at 7pm. Our hall is warm with comfy chairs.

Come along, it’s great fun. Everyone is welcome, especially if you are new to whist. Entry is £3 to include tea and biscuits. The last whist drive before the summer break will be on 18th April.

Beer, Balti and Bingo

We’re re-running this very successful evening at the Bridge Hotel on Wednesday 20th March at 7.30pm – David Evington will be our caller again. The meal and a drink will be £10 and this will be followed by the bingo – £1 an entry. We hope to have several rounds with a prize for the winner of each round. If you want the curry (chicken or vegetarian), please could you phone Robin on 01886 853295 by Monday 18th March so that we can book your meal. You are welcome to come to the bingo without the meal and the drink – just turn up at about 8.15pm!

Film and Supper

Herefordshire Life Through a Lens: Stories from the Hop Yards will be shown at Hanley Village Hall on Saturday 20th April (Easter weekend) after a themed beer supper starting at 6.30pm. Please text Trace on 07972 183164 by 17th April if you would like supper. We’re hoping that local beers will be available to buy to accompany the supper and film. The suggested donation for the supper and film is £10 per person. You can come and see the film without the supper for a £5 donation – it will start at about 8pm. Previous showings of this film have been sell-outs.

Summer Fête

The Village Hall Management Committee and the Area Church Committee have agreed that we will hold a joint fête at the village hall on 15th June. We need people to man the various stalls – please contact Robin on 01886 853295 if you would like to help.

Elections District and parish council elections are on 2nd May. If you wish to become a councillor please look on the Malvern Hills District Council website, the Electoral Commission website or the parish council website. Details will be loaded onto the sites in March and forms must be hand delivered to MHDC by 3rd April. The clerk will have forms that can be emailed to residents.

There are seven seats to be filled in Eastham: if there are seven candidates then a vote will not be held but the councillors will be legally classed having been elected. If there are more than seven candidates then residents will be invited to vote on 2nd May. Voting If you wish to have a postal/proxy vote you must apply by certain dates in April. If you are not registered to vote you need to do this now to ensure you are eligible to vote on 2nd May. Memorial Hall At the time of writing the hall cannot be used due to insurance issues. council will be held in Eastham Church until this issue is resolved by the trustees.

The next meeting of Eastham Garden Club will be on Tuesday 19th March at 7.30 pm at Hanley Village Hall.

There will be a talk by Marion Stainton (published in The Horticulturalist and The Plantsman) on vegetable gardening – how to get the best from your efforts. This will be a back-to-basics talk focusing on a practical approach to planning and managing vegetable growing, with emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening where chemicals are used only as a last resort.

What is Rosen Method Bodywork?

How does Rosen Method work?

When we experience a feeling that is too much to handle, we learn that we can stop the feeling by tightening our muscles and controlling our breath. But when we do this we cut off the flow of energy to this place. In essence, we create a numbness, a disconnection to ourselves. When the body is not listened to it can only get our attention through pain. By listening to our bodies, we find relief from pain and begin to feel more and more fully alive. Rosen Method helps to develop this listening, re-establishing a balance of equality between mind

What happens in a session?

The Rosen session is cooperative, a journey that practitioner and client take together into the heart of authentic experience. Often there are memories, feelings, insights, new possibilities, and unique resolutions which come up for the client from this very personal truth of the body.

In Rosen Method there is no fixing or changing, only noticing, witnessing, allowing, unfolding.

In Rosen, our focus is on relaxation. We embrace the human experience with emapythy and directness.

The ethos of Rosen is simple: connection to the truth by not having to deny difficult feelings or experiences. What brings ease brings us closer to ourselves, what brings dis-ease, takes effort and takes us away from ourselves.

What might be some benefits of Rosen Method Bodywork?

Creamy garlic stuffed mushrooms

Instructions Whisk the egg into the flour in a large bowl. Add the milk a little at a time, whisking until smooth before adding more. Season with a little salt and pepper.

Lightly grease a frying pan with a little of the butter and place over a medium-low heat. Add about a quarter of the pancake batter, and swirl the pan gently until it is evenly coated with the batter. Cook for a few minutes, until the pancake has released itself from the pan (it should move when you gently shake the pan), and the underside is lightly browned. Flip the pancake with a spatula, and repeat with the other side.

A delicious alternative to sweet pancakes for Shrove Tuesday.

Transfer the pancake to a plate, and keep warm while you repeat with the remaining pancake batter.

Ingredients 1 egg 100 g plain flour 150 ml milk Salt and black pepper 1/2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp oil 300 g mushrooms, diced 5 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp cream cheese 70 g cheddar cheese, grated Small bunch fresh parsley, chopped

Heat the oil in a different frying pan and add the mushrooms and garlic. Cook over a medium heat for a few minutes, until the mushrooms have softened. Remove from the heat, and add the cream cheese and grated cheddar. Mix well until the cheddar has melted. Season to taste, and stir through the fresh parsley.

Add a quarter of the mushroom mixture to each pancake. Fold in half, then in half again, and serve.

Teme Valley Wildlife March’s subject is ivy.

“Ha”, you’re thinking, “she’s lost the plot, ivy is a Christmas subject”. Well in a way it is, because it was a chance comment overheard at Christmas that set me thinking that I might make ivy a subject for one of these articles.

We live in a lowceilinged cottage which has some serious-looking old meat-hooks hanging down from the beams. At Christmas these are festooned with balls of ivy, to stop Christmas revellers poking their eyes out on them. We always choose ivy which has large clusters of berries, to give maximum festive effect. However, flowers and berries do not grow on ivy when it is hugging the ground. They only form once the shoots have left the ground and climbed skywards enough to receive the light required to produce them.

that grow nearer to the ground. This is because ivy is one of the few plants that changes the shape of its leaves as it grows older.

New-growth leaves are triangular, whilst more mature stems bear narrower, diamond-shaped leaves.

Mature ivy is very important for wildlife. The older stems bush out when they reach the sun and can shelter a wide variety of birds and insects, particularly robins and butterflies, who often spend the winter here. Blackbirds enjoy eating the berries, and insects are offered a leafy meal.

Ivy handily grows throughout the year, so there’s always something to munch on. One creature dependent on ivy leaves is the holly blue butterfly. The first brood of its caterpillars feeds on holly, but the second brood of the year feeds on ivy, then waits over the winter ready to emerge from its pupae in the early spring.

Unfortunately ivy gets a bad name. Many gardeners try to take it down because of the fiercely-gripping aerial roots which attach the stems to walls and tree-trunks. Although ivy may weaken a tree it doesn’t kill it, in fact it is just as likely to hold up a frail old specimen as to bring down a weak one in the wind.

If you love wildlife, try to love ivy. Its shallow flowers give access to all; flies, midges, bees and wasps are all invited to take a drink. It flowers late, sometimes into December, and is one of the last nectar sources for insects before winter sets in. Talking of which …

Stoke Bliss church: update

As most of you are aware, while Stoke Bliss church is closed the services and other happenings are taking place at Kyre.

The plaster falls from the ceiling in the nave mean that the church has to be locked because of public safety. As always after such an occurrence, it has meant co-ordinating many aspects – the insurers, the diocesan architect, the diocese and the builders/safety netting suppliers. Then the grants have to be applied to pay for the work and the faculties approved for this.

Julia and members of the ACC and PCC are working hard to get permissions so that the wedding in June can go ahead (with thanks to Paul Wrighton and the bridal pair for their help in this matter) but until the ceiling has been made safe the current situation continues.
