Dear Villagers After the excitement of Christmas and New Year, I’m finding myself in reflective mood as I write this piece. This year Easter is well into April (Sunday 21st), so February is a month that gives us a chance to draw breath and maybe dare to try something different. If you are interested in exploring faith we have FFF this month and a short informal confirmation course during March as well as a Lent course guided by music from Handel’s Messiah. We have a couple of services that you might like to come along to and join with our churches. Candlemas will be at Kyre on 3rd February and together we will mark the end of the Epiphany season. We will light candles and think about the importance of new life and old and end by turning towards Easter. If candles don’t appeal, but singing does, then you might like to come along to the Snowdrop Service at Rochford where we have a Songs of Praise, using favourite hymns picked by the congregation.

There is also the chance to participate in a choir locally, which we will form if there is enough interest.

February is also a month when our gardens and hedgerows are starting to come to life after a few months of being dormant. One of the great joys of moving to a new place is seeing the landscape change through your first year. I have not been disappointed as John and I have watched the Teme Valley turn from autumn into winter and now show signs of the new growing season, seeing green fields, snowContinued on page 3

Parish news FFF – Extra Helpings

Our next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be held at Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 7th February at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by supper and a period of study using a text. Everyone is welcome to this social evening. Please try to come – you won’t regret it!

Weekly Prayers and Reflections

Our weekly prayers and reflections on Wednesdays at 10am at Rochford Church restart on Wednesday 6th February. These are very informal and you would be very welcome to come along and give them a try.

If you been christened but would like to find out a bit more about being a Christian and join in communion when it happens, then do join us for four sessions in March, lasting about an hour each, with a view to being confirmed.

Scratch choir

If you are looking for a New Year activity that is healthy and fun, have you though about singing? We have been approached by a musician who is interested in leading a small choir in Teme Valley South, so we’re finding out levels of interest. This would not be a weekly commitment, rather a few rehearsals and then singing as part of the choir in a service or event.

Our prayers and sympathy go to the family and friends of Judith Brocklehurst whose funeral was on 20th December at Wyre Forest Crematorium. Also of Stella Phillips whose funeral was at St Mary’s, Stanford on 21st December and of Ian Vaughan whose funeral was on 12th January at St Peter and St Paul, Eastham. Ian was laid to rest in the churchyard after the service. May they all rest in peace.

Pilgrimage opportunity

Rev Ted Whittaker from our neighbouring benefice of Teme Valley North has asked if anyone would like to join a pilgrimage to the Holy Land that he is organising later this year – 8th to 20th November to be precise.

The cost is £2,500 – Ted says, “we go for 13 days, longer than others, and we aim for a wider, richer, more varied experience than most equivalent trips, eg visiting Lachish, Tel Dan, Bedouin, Crusader city (underground), Hebron glass factory, OT Jericho, and experiencing varied worship: Armenian vespers, Shabbat prayers, French communion, Egyptian and Catholic resurrection, as well as the more usual places for such a trip.”

February – Stuart and Josie Ward March – Celia Adams We have a vacancy on the rota for October. You don’t have to be a great flower arranger, just a bunch of flowers at least for the third Sunday.

As the harvest festival is in October, the team of flower arrangers generally gets mobilised so there is not so much to do. We have a lovely new vacuum cleaner which makes cleaning a joy and better still the team clean also takes place in October, so this is definitely a good month to choose. If you would like to volunteer please ring Celia Adams on 01584 781258.

Coffee Morning

The February coffee morning is on Wednesday 6th February at 10.30am at Eastham Memorial Hall. We welcome old and new faces.

The rota for the next couple of months is 6th February – Helen Matravers 6th March – Chris Kelland The team leader/facilitator is responsible for bringing the coffee, milk and biscuits, serving the coffee and working with the rest of the team. All expenses are reimbursed on the day.

We remain indebted to Mike Young and Keith Berry for preparing the hall, to Jean and David Harrison for doing the raffle and to Chris Kelland for looking after the money.

There will be no bring and buy this year but if you want to bring produce there will be a table with an honesty box for donations – thanks to Diana Clarke for manning this for the last few years, it’s time for a rest from organising. Thanks to Josie Ward for arranging the rota – no mean feat!

The Christmas lunch is on 4th December (regulars paid for from funds collected in the year) and the MacMillan coffee morning is on 2nd October.

Eastham Pub Night

Eastham Christmas walk

36 residents (mostly) and at least five dogs strode out for Eastham’s post-Christmas walk and luckily the weather was kind. There was a choice of walking three or six miles around footpaths in the village followed by homemade soup in the Memorial Hall which had been kindly donated by residents, who undoubtedly had already had enough of cooking over the festive period!

Thanks to everyone who came along – we hope you all enjoyed the chance to see Eastham from a different angle – and also to helpers who ran the event on the day including those who didn’t get to walk as they were busy in the hall preparing the food.

The event raised an amazing £214 which is for the newly formed Eastham Residents Association so there are now some funds for various administrative items.

Learn to ring the bells at Eastham

Great news, we have five people interested in learning to ring the bells After all the ringing at Armistice the “Ringing Remembers” campaign claimed some inspiring headlines – towers silent for many years rang out once more; hundreds of bands augmented with new learners; tens of thousands of ringers mobilised to ring in thousands of towers – not just in the UK, but across the world.

If you are interested in joining the newcomers’ class at Eastham please ring Celia Adams on 01584 781258. Jason Fisher and Julie Hartridge on juliehartridge@gmail.com are happy to run a class for beginners in 2019. More dates to follow.

Hanley Happenings

Table tennis at Hanley Village Hall is going well and we have a friendly and fit team of regular players.

Well done to them! They are pleased to welcome new faces and with three tables everyone has an opportunity to play at least one game of doubles or singles.

If you would like to join in the fun come along on a Monday evening at 7pm, bats and balls are provided. Your first taster session is free and in the new year we will be offering refreshments. At £3 per evening there isn’t a better way to make new friends and keep fit.

Art classes are on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8.30 pm at Hanley Village Hall. The class is ever-growing; new artists are always welcome.

Friday Market

It’s hard to believe that the new year has arrived and that the planning is behind us. Now we start planning for 2019.

The Friday Market didn’t achieve its target in 2018 and we were only able to send £1,100 to the Air Ambulance. Whilst this was excellent for our small community it was not our best year.

However we do intend to keep going and we ask that everyone gives us as much support as they can. Not only are we a source of bread, eggs, cakes and meat, we also provide a venue for exchange of bric-a- brac and conversation in a friendly and warm venue. Please come along and judge for yourselves.

We start again on Friday 22nd February from 10 to 11.30 and we hope to introduce new things to interest you, fruit and vegetables in season and of course there will be aloe products to promote your good health!

If you would like to help for just an hour that would be fabulous – we are always happy to involve our new friends! There are one or two recipe booklets still available. Jim, our gifted artistic postman, produced the front cover and all the recipes were contributed and tried and tested by members of the community. All proceeds go to the air Ambulance.

Digger’s ready to go!

On a completely different note, my dog Digger has recovered as much as he will from the trauma of the adder bite and is now in training to complete the Pennine Way. My husband and Digger are aiming for 7th April and I will let you all know how it goes. Thank you for all the good wishes, Digger even had a get well card!

Our regular monthly service

On Sunday 3rd February at 10am we have our usual service of Communion and hymns. The service in March will be on 3rd March at 10am.

Monthly whist drives

Our next monthly whist drive in the village hall will be on Thursday 21st February starting at 7pm. Our hall is warm and we have comfy chairs. Come along, it’s great fun. Everyone is welcome, especially if you are new to whist.

Entry is £3 to include tea and biscuits. The next drives will be on 21st March and 18th April.

Beer, Balti and Bingo

We’re re-running this very successful evening at the Bridge Hotel on Wednesday 20th March at 7.30pm – David Evington will be our caller again. The meal and a drink will be £10 and this will be followed by the bingo – £1 an entry with the winner of each round collecting half that round's proceeds. Make sure you come!

Daffodil Teas

Our daffodil teas will be at the height of the daffodil season on Mothering Sunday, 31st March, at St Mary’s from 2 to 4pm. Bring your mum and enjoy the daffodils and a cup of tea and a cake for a small charge.

Film and Supper

Herefordshire Life Through a Lens: Stories from the Hop Yards will be shown at Hanley Village Hall on Saturday 20th April after a themed beer supper – please save the date. We’re hoping that local beers will be available. The suggested donation for the meal and film is £10 per person.

Summer Fête

We would like to set a date for the fête on a Saturday in June, July or August. If you have any preferences or dates when you will not be available, please let me know. So far no-one has contacted me!

Sweater party

The sweater party was held on 20th October and organised by Janet Mills. Commission from the sale of the sweaters was £116 and £58 from the raffle – thanks to Janet and Jo for a good morning’s work!

Crib Service

At this year’s crib service on Christmas Eve we heard the Christmas story from the Donkey's viewpoint – thank you to the Donkey (Livvy) and all the children who participated, with a special mention for a tiny Angel Gabriel (Henry) who read his lines beautifully. Thanks to Cecilia for writing the script, casting and organising the actors. Thanks to everyone who decorated the church and to those who supplied the biscuits, chocolates and mince pies.

Thanks also to David Evington for providing and serving the mulled wine, to Mary for playing the organ and to Julia for presiding over the event! Disappointingly we had a slightly smaller congregation than usual as a number of people were away from Stanford.

Walk it off

Sue Softly had organised a walk around the parish on Sunday 6th January – this was a fairly flat circuit of about four miles starting and ending at Stanford with Orleton Village Hall. This was followed by a delicious meal prepared by Sue and a team of helpers. Certain walkers therefore managed to put it on, not take it off.

About 40 people attended (most were from other areas in the parish – very few from Stanford!). After expenses, £225 was shared between St Mary's and the village hall. Thanks to Sue, David, Tina, Clem, Chris and Ann. A big thank you to John Lane who supplied the drinks! And to those who gave the raffle prizes.

Mrs G’s new car

We’e beginning to think about a new car for Mrs G – what a minefield!

The present one goes perfectly well, bought new in 2004 it will shortly be 15 years old and maybe it is a bit tired. It has travelled more than 100,000 miles but is still quite a handsome thing (see above).

The 30mpg 6 cylinder petrol engine means we are paying road tax at the highest rate – and that hurts more than anything, especially as the annual mileage is now much reduced.

It's also a "quality" German brand. Should we opt for a cheaper oriental model? And anyway, does the German "quality"mean it's actually any better than Japanese or Korean.

What about cost? A new similar model would be £30,000+ but if we keep it for 15 years we will be into our mid 80s and probably not driving even as far as we do today. Depreciation of £2,000 every year is difficult to accept.

One of the problems of growing older is that getting in and out of a low sporty car is increasingly difficult, so the new one should probably be higher and easier to access. And on the odd occasion we carry an extra person they are often as old and agile as we are! So we need back doors and probably a hatchback to make it a bit more flexible for odd sized loads.

So what do we choose? It needs to • be economical to buy and to run – 50mpg+ • be low road tax • be easy to get in and out of • have five doors • have the latest toys: satnav, reversing cameras, heated seats etc ...

The really vexed question is, petrol or diesel?

The risk with diesel is that the price will go up and up and then there will some places where you won't be allowed in. The government is against diesel at present, but there is always the possibility that experts will change their minds and it will come back into favour!

Then there is electric. This would be fine for popping into Tenbury and back but my lovely wife is anxious about so many things so I don't think I’ll add "range anxiety" to her list.

An appreciation – Ian Vaughan The 12th century church in Eastham over-flowed on 12th January for the funeral of one of its most colourful parishioners, Ian Vaughan.

Ian, aged 62, died on 30th December 2018 after a valiant two-year battle with cancer. In 2015, against the odds, he survived an 11,000-volt electric shock when a ladder he was carrying just clipped a power cable.

He lived in Eastham for much of his life. His parents, John and Dorothy Vaughan, moved to Eastham Villa on the Highwood in 1956. They grew vegetables and wallflowers to sell at Kidderminster market along with damsons. Ian attended Highwood school and then the Chantry in Martley. Later he enrolled in Pershore Horticultural College where he flourished. To cover costs, he worked at Treasures of Tenbury. And he helped behind the bar at the Lion in Clifton and the Tally Ho on the Broadheath – a popular figure full of

He was larger than life, flamboyant, great fun, scatty, loving, compassionate and extremely artistic and talented. And he was passionate about nature and the land.

So it was no surprise when this talent and creativity were recognised by the famous Hillier Garden Centre in Hampshire. Founded in 1864, the Hillier family grew the centre and its reputation over the years. It was while Ian was working for them in the 1970s that he won a prestigious Silver Medal at the Chelsea Flower Show. And it was well deserved – he was a remarkably talented garden designer with wonderful vision, great knowledge of plants and a superb eye for colour.

In time he returned to the Highwood to help his parents. He started a nursery which expanded into garden landscaping, plants, shrubs, trees. He organised open days and later added wreath-making. Every Christmas they made 10,000 wreaths, often more.

From March 2009 until last year he could be seen every week with his colourful display of flowers and plants at the Round Market in Tenbury. A popular figure always ready for a chat.

Shortly before he died, when it was becoming difficult for him to enjoy visitors, I wrote to thank him for the many years of friendship and for the fabulous work he did for us. He was responsible for planting thousands of trees and shrubs over the years, transforming our garden, and for preparing magnificent urns and displays for special occasions – often without needing to be asked.

I said to him: “None of us can last forever, but few of us will leave a legacy such as yours.”

Our condolences go to Verity, Morwenna and Euan, and to all other members of his family. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by us all.

Molten chocolate babycakes These cute little cakes are perfect for Valentine’s Day. Make the mixture up a few hours in advance and put the prepared tins in the fridge until you want to cook them, which must be at the moment you’re ready to eat them.

Ingredients 50 grams soft unsalted butter 350 grams best dark chocolate 150 grams caster sugar 4 large eggs, beaten with a pinch of salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 50 grams plain flour

Method You will need six individual pudding moulds or remekins, buttered.

Unless you are making these up in advance, preheat the oven to 200ºC/180ºC Fan/gas mark 6, putting in a baking sheet at the same time. Lay three of the moulds on a sheet of doubled baking parchment. Draw round them, remove, and then cut out the discs as marked. Press them all into the base of the tins.

Melt the chocolate and let it cool slightly.

Cream together the butter and sugar and

gradually beat in the eggs and salt, then the vanilla. Now add the flour and when all is smoothly combined scrape in the cooled chocolate, blending it to a smooth batter.

Divide the batter between the six moulds, whip the baking sheet out of the oven, arrange the little tins on it and replace in the oven.

Cook for 10-12 minutes (the extra 2 minutes will be needed if the puddings are fridge-cold when you start) and as soon as you take them out of the oven, tip out these luscious babycakes onto small plates or shallow bowls.

Serve with whipped double cream, crème fraîche or ice cream.

Quaker women in Ironbridge

Early in January a group of us headed off to Ironbridge near Telford to visit one of the Darby houses, Rosehill, and to learn about Deborah Darby’s influence on Quaker prison reformer Elizabeth Fry. To accommodate those who didn’t fancy the one-hour drive on a cold winter’s night, we organised a minibus from the wonderful Tenbury Transport Trust. They could not have been more helpful and our driver, Suzy was kindness itself – and a very good driver. She even had the bus warm for our arrival on what turned out to be a freezing night.

There was quiet chatter on the bus as we wound our way to the Severn Gorge. Then, after a welcome hot drink and biscuit in the unusual Glass Room by Enginuity at Ironbridge, some walked and others drove up to Rosehill.

A dear friend loaned me his thick jacket to warm me up and to still my chattering teeth.

Good news: chivalry is alive and well and living in Rochford!

Rosehill is one of two Darby houses lovingly restored with help from members of the famous Darby family. Rachel, Lady Labouchere, whose book on Deborah Darby was invaluable to my research, donated £25,000 towards the restorations. She was a direct descendent of Abraham

Back down to the Glass Room for more hot refreshments. I have to admit here that the minibus gang enjoyed a glass of wine and a sandwich at this point …

Then it was time for me to wax eloquent about Elizabeth Fry and, on this occasion, on Deborah Darby too. Deborah, 26 years older than Elizabeth, married Samuel Darby and they lived in Sunniside, up high on the north bank of the Severn, west of Coalbrookdale, overlooking the ancient woods of the River Severn. This was the birthplace of the industrial revolution and ironworks are still made in the area today.

Deborah was a Quaker minister most of her life and she predicted that Elizabeth Fry would be: a light to the blind, speech to the dumb and feet to the lame. The younger woman had come to visit a cousin who lived in Coalbrookdale and she called on the Darbys at Sunniside. Deborah’s prediction marked a pivotal moment in Elizabeth’s life. She too became a Quaker minister and went on to become a famous prison reformer, friend to the poor, children and women and an advocate of education and nursing for all.

What’s in a name? Stoke Bliss and Kyre Stoke Bliss Stoke Bliss derives its name from the de Blez family; it was a minor holding (Stoke), their main holding being in Gloucestershire. The Domesday entry for Stoke Bliss said that it was valued at 25 shillings, Godric held it and there was one hide that paid tax. There was one communal plough and six villagers who had three ploughs and three slaves. Godric was the Saxon who held it in King Edward’s time.

Stoke is a common prefix to the parishes

William de Bliss was fined 2 marks for trespass in forests around here with Stoke Lacy, Stoke Prior, Stoke Edith and Stokesay, all with the suffix giving the name of the family that holds it. These parishes on the Welsh border were held on payment of knights’ fees to maintain the castle garrisons along the boundary of the Marches.

In 1176 William de Bliss (Bledis) was fined 2 marks for trespass in forests of Herefordshire; a later generation was dispossessed of their lands for four years between 1231 and 1235. In 1253 Hugh de Bliss was pardoned for the death of William Corbin. In 1262 Hugh made the grant

to the Augustine nuns of Limebrook, and around this time St Fletcher’s Chapel that lay between the Hide and the Perry was founded.

The dates suggest a connection between the two – perhaps a penance chapel?

Kyre Kyre had three entries in Domesday, one referring to the area now called Kyrewood and the other two relating to our parish.

Kyre, which has the church and Kyre Park, was known as Great Kyre, Kyre Magna or Kyre Wyard. The latter name referred to John Wyard who held it in 1300 and enclosed the deerpark.

The Domesday record says that Urso held it from Bishop Walter. It contained two hides that paid tax – probably the area around Kyre Park and also the Hide and Perry area. Its value had dropped in the assessment from 12 to ten shillings, but it could use three ploughs and only one was in use at the time. There were three smallholders and threeslaves, with a mill that paid ten packloads of grain. This mill may have been one on the Kyre Brook near the bridleway that leads up to Hanley Childe next to the Lodge and Mill End. By the time of John Wyard in 1300 the land Continued on page 22

What’s in a name? Stoke Bliss and Kyre Continued from page 21 was worth 100 shillings and he held the manor on payment of half a fee. A full fee would have paid for upkeep of a knight for a specified period of time, whereas he was due to pay for a serjeant at arms at Brecknock Castle on the Welsh borders.

In contrast Kyre Parva, Little Kyre or Ketels Kyre was held previously by King Edward. It had three hides which paid tax; in Lordship, one plough, five villagers, four smallholders with eight ploughs, and three slaves. Value before 1066, later and now forty shillings. Also a mill that paid ten packloads of grain. It acquired the name of Keteles Cure or Kettles Kyre when it was held of the manor of Eastham by Henry Ketel. The mill would possibly have been the one that was on the Kyre Brook roughly opposite Pensons.

Kyre Parva extended from the Herefordshire boundary to Hall Farm, then to Hursley and Bannals Farm, which probably represent the three hides mentioned. From there it goes to the Grove and back down to the current B4214 and then to the county border again, and

doesn’t include the Hide and the Perry. It was amalgamated with Stoke Bliss in the early twentieth century, although the old families still referred to it as Kyre Parva or Little Kyre for quite a while afterwards.

Teme Valley Wildlife In February we naturally turn our thoughts to the year ahead. The Teme Valley Wildlife Group has an exciting programme of events for 2019, offering a wide variety of talks based at our superb new venue, Stoke Bliss and Kyre village hall. There are walks too.

I’ve been thinking about insects because I have recently attended the Wyre Forest Study Group’s excellent annual entomology study day. I was intrigued to hear about a rare spider that lives at Pershore Abbey, on the outside walls behind the drain-pipes! It is a large type of house spider called the cardinal spider (pictured above). This large and seemingly menacing creature got its name because apparently

Henry VIII’s advisor, Cardinal Wolsey, was terrified when one ran over his tapestry-covered walls in the flickering candlelight of Tudor times. Perhaps he could have done with a bat-detector tuned to spider frequency!

I’ve rescued lots of house spiders marooned in the sink recently. The shiny, upright sides of our Belfast sink prevent them from leaving once they’ve ventured in. Spiders do not, despite popular wisdom, come up through the plug-hole. They enter houses in the autumn to hide from the approaching winter weather and to find a mate. The large ones, which run out from under the furniture whilst you’re sitting in front of the fire, are males. They’re on the lookout for females, who are usually holed up in a corner somewhere. Once partnered, the male and female stay together for a few weeks, then the male dies and the female eats him. She hides with her egg sac until the spring, when lots of minute spiderlings hatch out.

Continued from page 23 might notice is the daddy longlegs spider. This is smaller than the house spider with a small body and very long spindly legs. I currently have one hanging in the corner of my bedroom ceiling (dusting clearly not my forte) and I love these spiders because when you touch their web they spin round in manic circles. The females of this species lay a little bundle of eggs which they hold fast in their jaws, looking as if they’re eating a tiny bunch of grapes.

The garden spider is another one you’ll be very familiar with, sitting expectantly in the centre of a beautiful geometric web. These really are a treat to see on a chilly morning, when they stand out, spangled with glittering dew.
