Dear Villagers The harvest has been safely gathered in. In churches and village halls across the parish we have celebrated and enjoyed each other’s company at services and harvest meals. The clocks have gone back and nights are drawing in. At home our gardens have been cleared; indoors it’s time to light the fire and make sure we are all stocked up for winter.

It feels a bit like that in our church life, too.

We are looking after ourselves for the time being so tasks have been allocated and preparations made. The winter service schedule is in place and parish activities are covered. We look forward to welcoming visitors from further afield in the coming months, bringing with them new ideas and ancient wisdom.

November is a time of remembrance. At All Souls in a time of shared reflection we remember those we love who are no longer with us. On Remembrance Sunday we honour those who have died in battle and share the sorrows of war. At Hanley William this year on 12th November at 11am the Last Post will be sounded followed by the Reveille, a reminder that after death comes life. As the last leaves fall so new buds are already being formed deep down.

Together this winter we will keep the fires warm to make for new growth in our homes, in our hearts and in our churches. Please join us. Our services and parish events are for everyone.

The next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be held in Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 2nd November at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by a supper and a period of study using a text.

Part-time administrator

Several months ago, the Parochial Church Council (PCC) decided to employ a part-time paid administrator. We advertised for this role in September and received two responses, one from the parish and one from Herefordshire.

The parish applicant withdrew and although the PCC set up an interview panel, it was felt that it would be difficult to deal with a remote administrator. Previously Lesley Dean had agreed to produce the pew sheets during the period of vacancy and she agreed to take on the paid role until the new priest is appointed. At that stage the new priest and the PCC can decide on the way forward.

Robert’s licensing

A bus was hired to take 18 of us to Top Church, Dudley for Robert's Licensing on 10th October.

We were joined by about a dozen more from TVS who had gone separately. The church was fairly full and attended by several local religious leaders. The service was led by Bishop Graham of Dudley with assistance from Archdeacon Nikki and the Rural Dean. The service is very formalised but Bishop Graham gave a sermon on stones. After the service, we had delicious refreshments and a glass or two of wine! Those on the bus were not driving.

Recruiting a new priest

As stated in last month’s TemeTalk we are moving forward. Our advertisement was placed in the Church Times on 29th September with a closing date of 20th October. At the time of writing we do not know how many applicants there might be. We hope to shortlist in late November.

Harvest Festival

The Harvest Festival was a super service, led

by Pete Thorpe with Jackie Hughes as preacher.

Thanks to everyone who provided flowers and produce to decorate the church.

After the service we enjoyed a delicious supper in the hall – thanks to Ann.

FFF – Extra Helpings

The next Friendship, Food and Faith Extra Helpings will be in the hall on 2nd November at 7 for 7.30pm. If you haven’t given this a try, come along for an interesting evening. Following one of Ann’s delicious suppers we have an hour discussing short passages from the bible in a very easy and light-hearted way, a super exercise in exploring our faith.

Quiz

Quiz night is on Friday 3rd November at 7pm.

Everyone in TVS is warmly invited to come along to this new Germinate inspired idea of Pub Church. The first one is on Friday 10th November at Rochford Village Hall, 7 to 9.30pm.

It will be a very informal evening to meet friends and neighbours over a drink and a chat – please bring your own drink. There will be some pub games if you wish to challenge someone to a game of dominoes or cards.

Music of bygone days will be playing!

Stoke Bliss and Kyre Christmas Lunch

Services in Stoke Bliss and Kyre

Stoke Bliss services will continue using the regular service order. Now that the clocks have changed the service on 5th November will be at 3.30pm and will possibly be a communion service. In December there is no service on 3rd December but on 17th December there will be a 10am Carol Service with wine and mince pies afterwards. On 7th January we return to the regular pattern of lay-led services at 3.30pm.

Services at Kyre will continue with the Celtic evensong on the fourth Sunday at 3.30pm. The service on 26th November may be a communion and on 24th December there will be a Christingle service at 3pm – bring your children and grandchildren to enjoy this special service celebrating Christ in the world.

On 28th January we are back to the regular pattern of lay-led Celtic evensong at 3.30pm.

Thanks to everyone for your help and support at the Harvest meal on Sunday 8th October and the Harvest Festival on Sunday 15th October. Special thanks to Sally Jones and Jackie Hughes for the service. The church looked super with lots of lovely flowers and produce.

Thanks to Sally for delivering all the produce to Maggs Day Centre in Deansway, Worcester. In addition FOAG received the collection of £120.

Autumn church clean

Thanks to all who came and helped with the autumn clean of the churchyard on 14th October, and to those who came and helped dress the church for the Harvest Festival, and also gave the church a good clean ready for the winter. Thanks to Phil for the welcome barbecue.

Christmas flower arranging

Everyone is welcome on Friday 8th December from 10am to 12 noon for the Christmas flower arranging workshop at Eastham church led by Hazel West. This will be a workshop where everyone can have a go. Bring your own props – although Hazel will have flowers and foliage available. We’ll keep a couple of the finished decorations for the church.

Village Supper

Christmas Fair

The Christmas Fair will be on Saturday 9th December and prizes are welcome for our giant tombola, which promises to be bigger than ever this year. We are also aiming to put together a hamper of Christmas goodies that we will be raffling on the day.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

The Macmillan Coffee morning held at the village hall was very successful, raising £200 for Macmillan Nurses who do a tremendous job supporting individuals and families where cancer has been diagnosed. Sadly there was some confusion, the coffee, cake and raffle ticket were included in the £2 entry. Several visitors were reluctant to pay the entry and so had free coffee etc, reducing the donation we could send.

However contributions were generously made to Carole’s Brave The Shave challenge and to date she has sent £691 to the fund with her husband making a similar amount (see page 19). There are still some outstanding pledges so please remember if you offered to donate.

Art classes are on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8.30 pm at Hanley Village Hall. The class is ever-growing and new artists are always welcome.

Service in November

There is only one regular service in Stanford this month. It is a communion service with hymns at 10.00am on 5th November – please try to come.

Parish Remembrance Service

There will be a parish Remembrance Service at Hanley William Church on 12th November at 10.30am. We hope that John Lane will read the names of the fallen from Stanford during the service – please try to come to support him.

Volunteers please

• The Village Hall Committee needs new blood – talk to David Lane, our chairman. He will tell you that we only have about four meetings a year but we need your help with the running and upkeep of the hall.

• The Church Committee also needs new blood. Talk to Robin, our churchwarden, about how you can help maintain a Church presence in Stanford – with a new rector being appointed over the next six months, we need to have your ideas about how to make the Church more effective!

Do you have treasurer skills? Brian is retiring as our treasurer soon and we need a steady hand on our finances! There must be a tame accountant out there!

• Saturday 4th November – A welcome return of the Jumper Party at Stanford Village Hall – get your Christmas presents in good time! Full details on page 12.

• Christmas is getting closer ... we have booked Archdeacon Nikki of Dudley to preside over our 5pm Crib Service on Christmas Eve. We hope that Amber will organise the actors and Cecilia will refresh her script which was so well received last year.

Whist Drives

Is it on? Is it off? We were very disappointed by the number of people who came to the September whist drive, but we realise that some people were still away on holiday.

If you wish to continue to have a whist drive in the village you must come along to the hall on 16th November at 7.30pm. Our hall is warm and we have comfy chairs. Everyone is welcome, especially if you are new to whist, and it’s great fun. Entry £3 to include tea and biscuits.

Anne Hull qualified as a registered nurse in 1986 and has worked for many years both in the NHS and in the private sector – she still works part-time as an agency nurse throughout Worcestershire. She’s also qualified as a foot health practitioner.

People often ask what the difference is between chiropodists, podiatrists and foot health practitioners. They all offer a similar service – toenail trimming, removal of corns and callus (hard skin), fungal nail treatment, ingrown toenail management and diabetic foot care.

Anne is qualified to work in the private sector and she performs routine clinical work to maintain the health of the foot. She is fully insured and is a member of the Alliance – this means that she has gained entry to the register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. Being on the register means that she is required to constantly update her knowledge

• Wash your feet every day with soap and warm water. Towel dry your feet, remembering the spaces between your toes.

• Moisturise your feet daily with foot cream or moisturiser, giving the cream time to dry before putting on your socks or tights.

• Wear comfortable well-fitting shoes, making sure your toes are not cramped.

• Change socks or tights daily.

• Keep your feet dry as fungal nail infections and athlete’s foot conditions thrive in warm moist conditions.

• Toenails should be kept trim.

• If you suffer from diabetes try to examine your feet daily on all the surfaces, not forgetting to check in between your toes for cracks, corns and blisters. (If you find this difficult ask someone to help you or use a mirror placed on the floor.)

• If you are diabetic never let an untrained person cut your toenails.

A big thank you to all those involved in wishing me well in sending me on my way.

It was wonderful to see so many at the service in Kyre. It was a truly memorable event, as was the party afterwards in the village hall. Many thanks for the various cards, vouchers, plants and bottles. I look forward to a wonderful garden and a glass or two to enjoy in it.

It was also good to see so many of you at the Licensing Service in Dudley. I appreciated you being there.

As I write this I have just started the Dudley job, with the commuting that goes with it. In fact, as the house on Rhyse Lane is still being worked on, I'm still living in the Rectory (with permission from the Diocese and don't worry, I'll be out well before another appointment is made.)

The seven years here have seen wonderful times. It has been a joy to see people developing and growing in Faith. It has been a privileged to be alongside people during their times of joy and sadness.

Stoke Bliss Ploughing Match

September saw Stoke Bliss Agricultural Improvement Society celebrating 70 years of match ploughing. This year the match was held at Underley Farm, Stoke Bliss by kind permission of the Farrant family – this is the farm where the very first match took place and where the 50th and 60th celebrations were held.

The whole event was under one roof in a very large cattle shed, leading to a lot of socialising at the bar and lunch tables and more banter when the results were announced. Once again Elaine's Kitchen kept up a constant supply of hot food and drinks throughout the day.

It has been quite a few years since it rained on match day – this year the clouds cleared and the sun came out in the afternoon and allowed the ploughmen to finish their lines in the warmth of a good September day. There were 64 ploughmen on all manner of machines; this included the spectacle of four pairs of horses pulling ploughs in this county’s wonderful soil.

The ladies committee did a wonderful job in decorating the shed with red and silver balloons and table decorations for our platinum year. There were craft stalls to browse, hand-

made cards, bee hives, dried flowers, gifts and a new stall selling small felted animals.

The homecraft, produce, children’s and horticultural sections were all well supported with some wonderful displays of garden flowers. The wine, drinks and preserves gave the judges a difficult time; they just had to do a lot of sampling before coming to the final decision.

It was a shame the dog show had to cancel at the last minute, but it meant that those who had come to take part had the opportunity to view more of the ploughing and competitions.

It’s lovely to see children, mums, dads, grandparents, people of all ages, dogs, horses, farm animals and tractors old and new all together making a rich tapestry of our country life.

A very big thank you to Jim, Hazel and Ian Farrant for hosting the event, thanks to all the ploughmen and competitors, the judges, those who came to help on the day, the public who came to support us and finally to the committee members – without them the day would not happen.

Stoke Bliss & Kyre Produce & Handicraft Show – next year?

At the meeting on 11th October the current office holders resigned from the Produce & Handicraft Show committee, leaving just three members, Phil Long, Sally Ransom and Deb Ellis, plus new members Kay Jones and Stella Brown. Alec Wall, who died in September, was a stalwart of the committee and appreciation of him was expressed at the meeting. However the posts of chairman and secretary remain vacant and a minimum of seven committee members is needed to run the show on the day – five stewards to accompany the judges and two people to record the results.

If there is to be a show next year, more people must come forward to take on the responsibility of running it. Otherwise, next March the money held in the P&H Show accounts will be transferred to the Village Hall accounts, with a strong recommendation that it is ring fenced for two years in the hope that it or a similar show will take place.

Hot Air in the Teme Valley

Some of you will have seen a collection of hot air balloons launch from Palmers Meadow one evening in mid-August and if you were up early the previous Monday, from the showground field, then to fly off to the east. You may be wondering why, so since I was one of them I will enlighten you. The flights were part of the Goodyear Farm Tires British National Hot Air Balloon Championships 2017, and I was competing in my CFS Racer to be ranked

for next year’s World Championships in Austria.

I won’t go into the details of the various tasks that can be set but basically we are flying a hot air balloon solely on the wind and that evening I was rather lucky with a marker drop of around 1.5m from my selected target, the road junction outside the Rock Cross Inn. The weather wasn’t great that week but we had a successful event and good practice before I headed over to Brissac in the Loire to participate in the European Championships. There the weather was much more conducive to hot air ballooning but my performance wasn’t as good as my previous podium finish a few years ago (age does matter). I was the top performing Brit – and 18th out of 88 balloons isn’t so bad for a pensioner.

Alec Wall

9th November 1934 to 15th September 2017 Alec, Doreen and family moved into the Old Blacksmiths, Stoke Bliss in 1984. They soon became an integral part of the community and were both involved in village activities and events, Doreen as secretary of the village hall committee and chief cook, and Alec, not the bottle washer , but organiser of the bottles !

Alec served as clerk to the Parish Council and was a stalwart member of the Produce and Handicraft Show amongst many other commitments such as the cricket match between The Hanleys and Stoke Bliss and Kyre. This was held for several years on Broadmeadow – the land purchased by their son Nick who built his own house there.

The service at Wyre Forest Crematorium on 4th October paid tribute to Alec's life in the police, his work in the CID and his meticulous attention to detail in everything he undertook. He held strong views and firm convictions and enjoyed discussing aspects of Conservative policy, politics, world events in general and the lack of evidence for the existence of God. His commitment to the value of community, family and individual responsibility never wavered. After Alec and Doreen moved to Tenbury in 2002 they continued to support the parish and Alec was an important member of

the apple and mistletoe groups. The attendance at his service said it all, with family, friends and colleagues from all stages of his life attending to pay their respects.

Thank you Alec for all you gave – even though we often held differing views, we continued to work together.

At our September meeting our speaker Mr Hardy came armed with copious potted plants and was extremely entertaining as he arranged them into very pleasing and artistic groups in larger pots. He then sold all the plants, which he had grown himself, to club members – bargains galore.

The competition was won by Pen Harrison and the raffle by John Phillips.

The next meeting will be a quiz and social on Tuesday 16th January – see you all then, meanwhile have a very merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

The Arts Society Teme Valley

If you are new to this area, or even if you have lived here for some years, you may not be aware of the excellent lectures in Ludlow. You have probably heard of NADFAS and also heard that there is often a waiting list to join.

NADFAS – the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies – is no more. In May 2017 it rebranded itself as The Arts Society, a title thought to more accurately reflect what it does. The local society is now called The Arts Society Teme Valley.

The Arts Society Teme Valley presents beautifully illustrated, informative and entertaining lectures by knowledgeable and enthusiastic lecturers on the third Wednesday in the month, from September to May. Lectures start at 2.15pm in the Assembly Rooms in Ludlow, and last about one and a half hours. The subjects range widely. This season we cover subjects from Portmeirion: a Welsh Italianate fantasy to silver filigree and traditional arts in Kosovo. There are many British subjects as well as international subjects of artistic interest.

There is no waiting list for membership and we would love to have some new members. We welcome both visitors, who pay £8 per lecture, and members who pay an annual fee

of £40. Our members come from a big geographical area, so over tea and cake after the lecture you may well find yourself talking to someone who lives in Presteigne, Bromyard, Clun or somewhere in between.

Teme Valley Wildlife In September the Teme Valley Wildlife Group was most fortunate in having Mike Averill, Worcestershire’s foremost dragonfly expert, to lead our Sunday walk. Mike told us what to look for when identifying the county’s dragonflies and shared with us his very extensive know-ledge of natural history. Despite overcast skies we saw brown hawker and common darter on the wing and enjoyed hunting for otter footprints in soft streamside mud where Mike had come across them on a previous visit. Our young members were enthused by Mike’s tales of the largest dragonflies in the world and some new members enjoyed seeing a new bit (for them) of the Teme valley.

The circular walk took in a number of pools and followed footpaths close to my home. On the return leg one of our members

spotted a plant in the hedgerow and asked me its name. Stumped, I had to confess that I didn’t know what it was, and I then recalled with embarrassment that a similar walk I had devised to show off the Teme Valley to the visiting Bridgnorth Naturalists’ Society, back in April, had gone past the same plant, eliciting the same question!

There was nothing for it but to get out the textbooks and track it down. It grows either side of a hedge boundary between an apple orchard and a sheep pasture. I had vaguely thought that it might be some sort of garden escapee, but the truth was far more interesting. It turned out to be quite an uncommon plant, not native to Britain, a clump-forming perennial called dwarf elder. Its leaves are very similar to the common elder, but the stems are less woody and grow to only three Continued on page 24

Continued from page 23 feet high. Like elderberry it has black berries, but instead of hanging down in generous bunches they are stuck, rather sparsely, on the ends of short, red, upward-pointing stalks.

Dwarf elder has another name. Thought to have been introduced into Britain during the ninth century AD, it is also called danewort.

Perhaps because of its red-coloured stems, tradition has it that it springs up at a place where the blood of a vanquished Danish invader has been spilled.

The Danes attacked Anglo-Saxon Britain from the late eighth to the ninth centuries and carried out raids on its heartlands by sailing up the River Severn. Worcester was raided on many occasions and there is an old story that a Dane was caught carrying away a chalice stolen from the cathedral. He was stopped, flayed alive and his skin was nailed to the cathedral door, where it remained for many years. It may be a legend, and a bloody one at that, but recent DNA analysis bears out the possible truth of the story. In the Teme valley the Danes were said to have reached Eastham and Rochford (Danish names are recorded in the Domesday Book by a later Norman administration) but it was said that they did not cross to the north of the Teme. My plant lies within Lindridge, north of, but in sight of, the river, so who knows?
