Dear Villagers “Happiness is not being pained in body or troubled in mind” Thomas Jefferson There are few of us lucky enough not to have matters which trouble them. Whether it’s deciding what to eat for the evening meal, catering for guests, work, the garden or simply writing an article such as this, there is usually something which needs to be addressed.

Two things have been particularly on my mind this week – one I can deal with and the other is in God’s hands.

The one I can deal with is flat packs ... the kind from Ikea. My office has been crying out for me to tidy it and place all the books in order on shelves. Closest to me are my church books as these are most often in use. Across the room are all the others, the fiction, the reference, the other religious, the photographic, to name but a few. Everything needs a home ... I can deal with it.

The other is much harder, because there is no way of my controlling it. As I write, my cousin has just days to live. Dying from cancer, he leaves three young adults, one of whom, his daughter, will marry in June and he won’t be there to support her. He’s very philosophical about it. He’s had a good life (his words) and he’s grateful for all that life has brought him.

My aunt and uncle and his brother and sisters are all in a daze, but in awe of his brave approach. God go with him.

It does however cause me to wonder about this whole business of death and being allowed the time to prepare for that moment My cousin is grateful that he has had the chance to prepare and say his goodbyes, unlike so many who are cruelly taken suddenly. He has been allowed Continued on page 3

Now, though I am putting my office in order, I am not (yet) readying myself for my departure from this world. It does make me wonder though, whether the Victorian approach (for that was when it was decided that death should not to be discussed openly) shouldn’t now be cast aside. Should we not talk more openly about it, much like we do all the other subjects these days.

On whichever side of the debate you fall on the subject of the afterlife, is it not better that we can talk to one another more freely and respectfully on the topic? I have met so many people recently who have, thanks to modern treatment techniques, had their lives extended by years. (My own mother has had three types of cancer and still lives into her 90th year!) As I

embrace the autumn of my life, I meet with many my age who are going through the process of loss of a parent or partner. The preparation and acceptance are helped by talking.

When my father died, my mother and siblings talked and talked until, finally the pain of loss was eased.

Pray, talk, listen and be open ... these are the philosophies I find work when dealing with this difficult topic.

Should you have any questions about this subject, there is an advice group meeting from 11 am to 2pm on the 9th, 16th and 23rd of June at Temeside House in Tenbury.

The next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be held at Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 7th June at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by supper and a period of study using a text.

Christian Aid Week

As announced last week, we planned to run raffles for Christian Aid Week at the Neighbourhood Lunches at Stoke Bliss and at Rochford. We held the Stoke Bliss raffle on 10th May and raised £81. Thank you to all those who provided prizes and who bought tickets.

The Rochford raffle will be on Wednesday 30th May and we’ll let you know the amount raised in next month’s TemeTalk.

We are holding a weekly session of prayers and reflections each Wednesday at 10am during the summer months. Please try to come.

Spring cleaning

The weather has improved at last and we have hopes of a good summer. It’s now time to do some of the maintenance needed in the village hall and the churchyard.

On Saturday 9th June we will be cleaning and decorating the kitchen in the village hall. We need volunteers. All materials, brushes etc will be provided, we just need help! We will be there from 10am and look forward to seeing you. Coffee and possibly bacon sandwiches will be there for the workers. If you have any questions please call Jennifer on 01584 812500.

Eastham 50th Riverside Fête

Save the date – Sunday August 19th Following the 1968 tradition the fête returns for its 50th year anniversary to its riverside location in and around St Peter and St Paul’s church with an exciting afternoon of attractions for all ages following a 1960s theme. There will be a few old favourites like a traditional Punch and Judy featuring Pulcinella (Mr Punch) and his wife Judy.

Books, books, books for the fête Drop any nice books into the back of Eastham church so they can be gathered up for the book stall. We only want the good ones and will be running an honesty box on the day.

Lindridge School’s potatoes and sunflowers to be judged at the fête Lots of potatoes and sun flowers are growing down at Lindridge School under the watchful eye of Kay Bissaker. Children enthusiastically planted them during the last week of April with help from Nicky Webb, Helen Matravers and others. Thanks to Alison Neary who master minded the project but was sadly poorly when the big day arrived. Alison is better now and plans are afoot to get all the potatoes up to Eastham church and for everyone to bring their sunflowers for judging on the day of the fête with some fabulous prizes.

Table tennis

Table tennis at 7.30 on Monday evenings at Hanley Village Hall continues to be enjoyed by a number of people who would be pleased to see new faces. Come along and join in the fun and meet new friends.

The end of the 1st World War

Hanley Village Hall committee is planning a number of events to celebrate the end of World War 1. The annual Village Supper on 10th November will recognise some of the food issues raised by the war.

On 11th November there will be a church service preceding the Village Beacon and on 17th November our monthly film will be related to the war. We hope that as many villagers as possible will take the opportunity to recognise the contribution of a whole generation in the First World War. If you are aware of a relation who was involved either in the military or in medical support, we would be pleased to hear from them and include their thoughts in our planning and celebrations.

The Great Village Bake Off

The Great Village Bake Off and Village Sunday Lunch will be on Sunday 17th June from 11am at Stanford Village Hall.

Categories for adults: savoury pie, sweet pie, cake, bread/scones.

Categories for children: savoury pie, sweet pie, cake, tray bake/small cakes.

Category for under 5s: small cakes with lots of decoration!

The men of the village are actively encouraged to enter.

A special feature this year is a Live Technical Challenge for certain men of the village starting at 11.30am. If you would like to watch, we expect you to make donations to see how it should be done, or not as the case may be. We expect to have to pay for the ruined tins and utensils. Children should not be allowed in the kitchen as they may learn a few new words!

Following the judging of the categories and the technical challenge by Catherine Campbell (the esteemed winner of the last event, in the absence of Mary Berry and Prue Leith), the entries will then be eaten as part of a Village Sunday Lunch, with salads, sauces, custard etc provided to complete the meal. If you are staying for lunch, please bring your own liquid refreshment.

Ray the Postie

Ray has been our postie for 19 years and the village decided that we would like to thank him.

About 20 people attended this event. There were scones, cakes and cups of tea. Iain Patton made a presentation to Ray of a framed photograph with a dedication. Thanks to Iain and Milly for overall organisation, Chris and Ann for the picture and Jenny and everyone who provided scones and cakes.

Parish Rogation Sunday

We were blessed with lovely weather on Sunday 6th May to wander around Noverton Farm by kind invitation of David and Michelle Evington. There were about fifteen adults and ten children. Unfortunately when we got to the wilderness part of the Service, all the children had deserted us for the trampoline so we didn’t do justice to the hymn, Who put the colours in the rainbow?

Thanks to Archdeacon Nikki for leading the service and to Pete Thorp for the organisation. Thanks also to David and Michelle for providing sausages in bread rolls with plenty of liquid refreshment.

Archdeacon Nikki was taking part in a half marathon the next day in Milton Keynes – she said the food helped her to complete the course on the hottest day of the year so far!

Car Boot Sale

Nine “booters” turned up to the Car Boot Sale at Stanford Village Hall on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May, and we raised £150. It was a good social morning, again blessed with lovely weather (providing you weren’t running a half marathon!).

Joe Hemingway organised the event and asked that his thanks be extended to John Bailey and Tina Lane for the bacon baps and drinks and also his thanks to Tasty Meats who provided the meat at cost and to Steve (The Den) who donated the four dozen baps. Finally we should thank Joe for his sterling work in organising a highly successful morning. Do you want another one? If so contact one of the Village Hall Committee.

500g ready-made shortcrust pastry plain flour, for dusting 200g raspberry jam 3 tbsp desiccated coconut, plus 3 tbsp toasted in a dry frying pan until golden-brown, to serve 300g fresh raspberries 500ml full-fat milk 1 vanilla pod, split, seeds scraped out 5 free-range egg yolks 125g caster sugar 4 heaped tbsp cornflour 2 tbsp icing sugar, for dusting 400ml double cream, whipped until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed

Method

• Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

Grease a 24cm/10in tart tin with butter.

• Roll out the shortcrust pastry to a 0.5cm thickness and use it to line the prepared tart tin. Prick the pastry several times with a fork, then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

• When the pastry case has rested, place a sheet of baking parchment into it and half-fill with baking beans. Transfer the pastry case to the oven and bake for 15 minutes.

• Remove the baking parchment and baking beans and return the pastry case to the oven for a further 4-5 minutes, or until pale goldenbrown.

• Spread the raspberry jam onto the pastry base in an even layer. Sprinkle over the three tablespoons of non-toasted desiccated coconut 12

and half of the fresh raspberries and set aside.

• Bring the milk, vanilla pod and vanilla seeds to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove the vanilla pod.

• Beat together the egg yolks and sugar.

• Pour the hot milk and vanilla mixture over the egg and sugar, whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Return the mixture to the pan over a medium heat. Whisk in the cornflour, a tablespoon at a time, until well combined, then heat, stirring continuously until the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon.

• Transfer the custard mixture to a clean bowl and dust with the icing sugar (this prevents a skin from forming). Set aside to cool, then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

• Whisk the whipped double cream into the chilled custard mixture until well combined.

• Spoon the custard and cream mixture into the pastry case in an even layer. Sprinkle over the remaining fresh raspberries. To serve, sprinkle over the toasted coconut. Serve immediately.

Twenty years of happiness Just after 4am on Easter Day Avril and I rose from our lovely warm bed and prepared for the journey to Stanford for the Sunrise Service.

Around 5.15 we left our home in Birmingham in darkness and headed down the M5 to Droitwich and then to Great Witley, where dawn was just beginning to break, arriving at Stanford a little after 6 o’clock.

At first we gathered in darkness in the church and then continued outside by the brazier for the next part of the service. By then the sunrise over the hills as absolutely amazing. We went back into the church,now well lit, where I read the Gospel of the empty tomb.

Just before the Peace, Avril and I were called to the altar rail by Archdeacon Nikki, who told the congregation that we were celebrating 20 years of marriage. She also said that we had held our ten-year blessing in the same church.

Then it was Revd Louise Grace assisted by an old friend of ours, the Ven Lorys M Davies, exArchdeacon of Bolton. Archdeacon Nikki had

very carefully selected prayers for our blessing and then called for a round of applause.

At the end of the service some of us adjourned to the Bridge for a full English breakfast, which we enjoyed very much.

For Avril and me it was a day that will long remain with us. We were extremely grateful to Archdeacon Nikki for her well chosen and kind words and to all those who wished us well. Our thanks must also go to Robin and Lesley Dean who had firstly offered and then made all the arrangements. Our Silver Wedding will be in 2023, by which time I will be 97 years old.

The wedding of the year I love a wedding, especially when I can watch it from the comfort of my armchair without having to dress up, stand around in uncomfortable shoes and make polite conversation with the bride’s doddery great-aunt. And the one that we were all invited to on 19th May was one of the best.

What about all those A-list celebs and minor royals in their designer clothes, some stunningly beautiful and some just stunning, but not necessarily in a good way. Amal Clooney took the prize. Victoria Beckham was wearing her own label which would have looked beautiful, as one commentator said, if she had worn it with a smile. Beatrice and Eugenie had toned it down since the last Royal Wedding and just come as middle-aged ladies.

Prince Harry, waiting at the altar with his big brother, looked understandably nervous and a bit twitchy and hot in his heavy coat.

The bride’s mother – didn’t you want to give her a hug, walking into the chapel alone and sitting next to an empty seat. She was beautfully dressed and very composed, even if she did seem to be on the verge of tears for most of the time.

Then came Meghan in THAT dress – the

one we had all been waiting to see. How amazing, how glamorous, how deceptively simple.

She too was perfectly composed, walking down the aisle alone until her father-in-law-tobe met her and escorted her to her future husband. And those little page boys and bridesmaids, all so well behaved , all so pictureperfect.

Harry relaxed then, when she stood beside him. He tenderly lifted the veil from her face.

The looks they exchanged with their vows said it all.

And what about that Episcopalian Bishop?

His sermon was about ten minutes too long but it certainly made an impact.

Suddenly it was over, the happy couple walked down the aisle, nipped down the steps and jumped into an open carriage and they were gone, on a whirlwind tour of Windsor.

The sun shone, everyone looked amazing, the music was sublime and no-one fell over.

The Queen looked fabulous, if a little stern, and 96 year-old Prince Philip walked without a stick. A perfect day. Apparently there were some good parties later too! Let’s wish them a long and happy life together.

Teme Valley Wildlife Have you heard of the Great British Wildflower Hunt? Now could be a great time to find out about it, and maybe get involved.

Promoted by the wildflower charity Plantlife, this is its second year and the charity is keen for as many people as possible to take part. As a child I learned the names of wildflowers from my mother, my aunts and my grandmother. We regularly had family days out in the countryside which were greatly enjoyed. Whilst there we picked cowslips, which my grandmother made into wine, blackberries, which my mother made into jam and pies, and watercress, which my father gathered from streams familiar from his boyhood. (My mother always soaked the cress overnight in sterilising tablets from Boots, to stop us getting liver-fluke!)

The same research found that only four in 100 of those asked could identify red clover. Although these results were somewhat disappointing, the good thing they also found out was that two-thirds of those answering the questions were keen to know more.

Alarm over the omission of the words catkin, conker, buttercup and dandelion from the Oxford Junior Dictionary led Plantlife to try and make these words more relevant to the youngsters of today. Perhaps controversially, (and there’s nothing like a spot of controversy to draw everyone’s attention) they have launched a drive to encourage children to pick wildflowers and to create a traditional posy with them.

These years are colourful and glorious, the pace has stilled, the pressure lifted.

Not counting life in months or years but living each moment to its fullest, Each small second of each minute, the minutes of each hour, Savouring all that is beautiful, all that is precious.

How I embrace these autumn years, as if I had waited for them all my life.

I shall not kick against the passage of time, the slowing of the body, But I will slip contentedly into this time.

For it is here and now that I am truly myself.

An awakening has taken place, now I see, this is all to me.
