Dear Villagers Firstly I would like to thank you for all the prayers and good wishes I received during my recent illness. I am very pleased to say that my treatment has been successful and the prognosis for the future is looking good.

I firmly believe that the power of regular prayer has been instrumental in aiding my recovery so thank you very much for all the support and kindness extended to me by so many of you.

It seems pertinent that as I write Easter is almost upon us. It is Easter, that key Christian festival, which shows us all so movingly not only the tragedy of Christ's passion and the despair and confusion of his disciples, but also the hope, joy and anticipation that follows as we go through Holy Week to Easter Sunday.

When I look back on the events of Holy Week, and in particular on the crucifixion with all the suffering and grief that such a cruel death involved, I am reminded that every time we switch on the news or open a newspaper, reports of cruelty, death and despair abound. It would be so easy to think that the world is a terrible and hopeless place, with people intent only on greed, hatred, exploitation and killing one another.

Yet the full events of Holy Week end with a very different picture from the despair of the crucifixion – a picture in which, through the Resurrection, hope and new life rise up triumphantly out of all the grief. What's more, if we look hard enough, we can see the hope and promise of that Resurrection reflected in our everyday lives, even amidst the doom and gloom of the news!

The next session of Friendship, Food and Faith – Extra Helpings will be held at Rochford Village Hall on Thursday 3rd May at 7 for 7.30pm. We start with a get together followed by supper and a period of study using a text.

Everyone is welcome to this social evening.

We are hoping that a new advertisement will appear shortly after Easter. We continue to pray that a suitable candidate will apply.

Teme Valley South Annual Parochial Church Meeting is to be held at Rochford Village Hall on 26th April at 7pm – anyone on the civil electoral roll in the parishes is entitled to attend.

This is an opportunity to elect churchwardens and members of the Parochial Church Council.

Please try to attend this important meeting – it is your opportunity to learn about what we are doing, ask questions about this and volunteer!

Ann has promised drinks and light refreshments for a social after the meeting. Do try to come.

Don’t volunteer, you might regret it

On Sunday 6th May we will have our usual service at St Mary's Stanford at 10am. This will be a Communion Service with hymns. For those attending, depending on how fit you are and how nice the day, you can walk or go by car to Noverton Farm, Stanford Bridge.

At 11am we will hold a Rogation Sunday service at Noverton Farm by kind permission of David and Michelle Evington. Everyone is welcome to this service, particularly children.

There will be lots of farm animals to see: calves, piglets, lambs and chicks. After the service, you can enjoy an early lunch of pork rolls made from free range Gloucester Old Spot pork reared on the farm with tea or coffee. Price £5 per head and we guarantee they'll fill you up!

Please advise Robin (01886 853295) by the Friday before if you wish to have lunch so we can get the catering right.

Good advice?

I wrote this last month in the vague hope that hundreds would come forward! I am not aware that anyone has volunteered.

Please think about this – the Area Church Committees (ACCs) and the Parochial Church Council (PCC) need volunteers. We are short of churchwardens, members of the PCC and of the ACCs and in places also treasurers. Surely there must be people out there prepared to support their local community with a commitment of on average two or three hours a month. We are a friendly lot – come along and try us. If you decide it’s not for you, then fair enough. We would like people to be regular churchgoers but this is only really necessary for the churchwardens.

Eastham Fête and Lindridge School

On 1st April (Easter Sunday) there will be an All Age Service at 9.30am, and on 15th April an All Age Service at 10 am followed by communion, led by the Dean of Worcester Cathedral, Revd Peter Atkinson.

Peter was educated at St John’s College, Oxford and was a parish priest in Clapham, South London and in Bath. In Sussex he was the last Principal of Chichester Theological College and a canon at Chichester Cathedral.

In 2014 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Worcester.

Please come and meet him on 15th April.

We are delighted to be collaborating with Lindridge School by growing potatoes (RHS style) and dwarf sunflowers so children’s entries can be judged at Eastham Fête for special prizes. Join in helping to plant with the children at Lindridge School during the week of 23rd to 27th April. Any offers of compost and 30cm (12”) black pots will be gratefully received. The heaviest crop of spuds and the prettiest sunflower exhibited at Eastham Fête on Sunday 19th August at Eastham Church will win some smashing prizes.

On Saturday 21st April we will be spring cleaning the churchyard in the morning from 10am to 1pm, and the church in the afternoon from 2 to 4pm. Please come along at any time with gardening tools to tackle the churchyard.

Everyone is welcome, whatever your skills, and there’s lots to be done to prepare for the summer’s activities. Barbecue from 1 to 2pm.

Mark your property – keep it safe!

Tenbury and Martley Safer Neighbourhood Team is holding a property marking event on Saturday 28th April from 10am to 1pm at Hanley Village Hall. Come along with your lawn mowers, chainsaws, hedge cutters etc to have them overtly marked. We will have details of the SmartWater initiative and security advice too. SmartWater at Hanley AGM

It’s hoped that Mark Simpson from SmartWater will come to the AGM of Hanley Parish Council on Tuesday 8th May at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting.

The Parish Council has applied for funding towards the purchase of SmartWater for anyone who comes to the meeting and is interested in buying it.

Although we live in an area of low crime, several sheds have been broken into recently and garden tools stolen. SmartWater is a system of marking your valuable items and registering them to you. This is a unique method of personalising any item from jewellery to horseboxes.

Each mark leaves a trace on anyone who touches it. If a suspect is arrested they will be checked for any traces of SmartWater or similar products. If they display any traces they will then be questioned about how they came into contact with this invisible marker. Similarly the police may be able to trace the owners of stolen property which has been marked in this way.

Easter Day Dawn Service

We’ll be holding this popular service again this year, presided over by Archdeacon Nikki. It starts at 6.15am. Pity the poor churchwarden who has to light the brazier at 5.45am! After the service we’ll retire to The Bridge for a full English breakfast at about 7 to 7.15am. This will cost £10 per person. Everyone is welcome to attend the service, but if you would like breakfast, please book with Robin (on 01886 853295 or by email robin.c.dean@gmail.com) so that The Bridge can cater for us. If you cannot attend the service, you will still be welcome for the breakfast.

This will be our only service in April. On 6th May we will have our regular monthly service of communion with hymns at 10am. This is in addition to the Parish Rogation Service (see below).

On Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May, there will be a car boot sale on our new land attached to Stanford with Orleton Village Hall. Car boots will cost £10 per boot and should arrive from 8am. Ray would like to thank all his customers for their custom, support and friendship over the last 19 years.

His last Stanford round was on Saturday 17th March. He is moving to a round in Abberley and Great Witley so we will still see him about. We are very grateful for his long service and his cheerful manner and caring attitude. He is being replaced by Justin.

We are planning to arrange a farewell party for him at the Village Hall in the near future.

self-sacrifice during the recent awful weather conditions spring to mind, as well as the generous giving by ordinary people to charities like Cancer Research, which over the last decade or so has undoubtedly transformed treatments and saved lives. There are so many daily acts of help and support across our local area that never get reported – neighbours who look out for one another in all sorts of ways and lend a helping hand to the vulnerable and those in need.

There are plenty of good news stories around which paint a very different picture of this challenging world: a picture in which love, kindness, caring and service to others are at the centre of human life and interaction.

Now this is the reality of the Resurrection!

This is God's vision for humanity, a vision of hope and generosity of spirit. In the eyes of the world this vision may not be classed as an amazing scoop that will sell thousands of newspapers but it is, nonetheless, a vision that spells life – and life in abundance.

It’s a vision bringing hope, both in the present and for the future, for it is Christ's Resurrection that transforms the doom and gloom into hope and joy – for you, for me and for the world.

We would like to thank our friends and neighbours for their help during the recent wintery weather. Like most sheep farmers in the Teme Valley we have been busy lambing. We live down a long drive, part of which is quite steep, which was covered with snow drifts.

Our bulk delivery of sheep feed was unable to reach us and we were running out. A neighbour kindly did two runs to Tenbury in his car to get us enough to tide us over. Other neighbours helped us put up extra hurdles for pens so we could keep more sheep housed until the worst of the snow subsided. One farmer kindly delivered his spare hurdles to us.

A number of other friends have turned up with delicious meals so we could just pop them in the oven and come in and eat. Practical help when needed is wonderful.

We are very fortunate to live in a caring rural community where friends and neighbours look after each other. We have been touched by your kindness and send you all our heartfelt thanks.

Teme Valley Tote - new series starts in April

Why is it important to the churches?

It’s a fairly painless way to raise money for the churches. The series ending last month raised £3,120 (£3,235 in 2016/17) for the churches and paid out £1,200 to 36 lucky subscribers.

How does it work?

Anyone can subscribe. We encourage new subscribers and old subscribers wishing to increase their stake. You pay £10 per ticket and for this you are entered in a draw each month (that's 83p per draw) for 12 months (April to March).

The monthly prizes are £50, £30 and £20. A number of people have multiple tickets (in several cases, ten each!). What usually happens is that someone buys a ticket or several for each of their family members.

How is the money collected?

In each area there is a local co-ordinator who collects and consolidates the subscriptions. If you wish to take part and haven’t yet been approached by your co-ordinator you should contact them or Robin Dean, the tote organiser, telephone 01886 853295, email robin.c.dean@gmail.com. Eastham’s successful Lottery bid £260,000 grant to rebuild the Memorial Hall Eastham Memorial Hall Charity has been successful in its bid for a grant of £260,000 from the Big Lottery Fund. This was right at the end of the Reaching Communities funding pot which closed in January, so it really was one of the last chances to get funding for the hall.

The Memorial Hall, which was built in 1922 as a memorial to the fallen of the village in the First World War, holds lunches and dinners, quizzes, films and many other events for people to get together and raise money for the hall, including the annual Fête, Flower and Produce Show.

But it’s desperately in need of refurbishment, which is why the trustees made the application for funding. The existing building will be demolished and a new hall built on the same site. No date has yet been set for work to begin.

The bulk of the money will come from lottery funding but more still needs to be raised through fundraising and pledges from members of the community.

Pen Harrison of the Memorial Hall committee said, “With generous donations and pledges from the parishioners of Eastham and others we now have enough funds to rebuild the hall based on the plans drawn up last year.

Eastham will have a simple hall that is warm, modern, accessible and fit for purpose. People in the village will have a hall to use for the next 100 years.

“Huge congratulations are due to the trustees for their hard work on securing this funding, and many, many thanks to all those who have supported our fundraising efforts and made a financial pledge.”

A good lunch for good neighbours They don’t just come for lunch ... they come for the company and a chat

Our cover girl this month is Ann Prosser. Our picture shows her in the kitchen at Rochford Village Hall preparing a delicious Neighbourhood Lunch.

Once a month Ann and her helpers welcome between 20 and 35 people for a tasty two course meal with a cup of tea or coffee for just £5. Everyone is welcome – people come from Tenbury and further afield, even from as far away as Hereford, and all diets are catered for including vegetarian and gluten free.

Ann is in charge of the cooking, with help from Jenny Barbé and Jennifer Gledhill. When I visited her in the village hall I was greeted by a delicious smell from the small kitchen. The long table was laid with white cloths and flowers and looked very inviting, and Ann was busy preparing a lunch of cottage pie with carrots and peas.

Ann explained how the pastoral team had started the lunch in September 2012, with a push from Robert Barlow. It was an immediate success and numbers are growing.

“They don’t just come for lunch,” she said.

“They come for the company and a chat, especially if they live alone. And if they can’t come to us they can order a takeaway lunch and we’ll deliver it to them.”

Rochford Neighbourhood Lunch is on the last Tuesday of every month at 12.30 for 1pm.

Baked leg of lamb with rosemary, INGREDIENTS

with redcurrant and mint sauce

1 x 4-4 ½ lb (1.8-2 kg) leg of lamb 2 level tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary 1 clove garlic 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 10 fl oz (275 ml) dry white wine ½ level teaspoon sea salt freshly milled black pepper For the sauce: 3 level tablespoons redcurrant jelly 4 level tablespoons chopped fresh mint 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar salt and freshly milled black pepper Pre-heat the oven to 190C, gas mark 5

METHOD

Crush the garlic and sea salt together to a purée, then add the oil, chopped rosemary and

a good seasoning of pepper and mix well.

Spread a large sheet of foil over the roasting tin, place the lamb on it and stab the fleshy parts of the joint several times with a skewer.

Spread the rosemary mixture all over the upper surface of the lamb.

Bring the edges of the foil up over the lamb, make a pleat in the top and scrunch in the ends. This foil parcel should be fairly loose to allow the air to circulate. Bake the lamb for two hours, then open out the foil, baste the joint well with the juices and return it to the oven for a further 30 minutes to brown. The above cooking time should result in lamb very slightly pink: you can cook it for more or less time, as you prefer.

To make the sauce, combine the redcurrant jelly and vinegar in a small saucepan and whisk over a gentle heat, till the jelly melts into the vinegar. Then add the chopped mint and some seasoning and pour into a jug – the sauce doesn't need to be warm.

When the lamb is cooked, remove it from the oven and allow it to rest for 20 minutes before carving. Discard the foil, spoon off the fat and make some gravy with the juices left in the tin: add the white wine, stir and let it bubble until it has become syrupy. Season with salt and pepper and pour into a warmed serving jug.

Happy the bride ...

Every bride knows that wearing “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” on her wedding day is sure to bring her good luck ... but there are lots of other dos and don’ts for the bridge and groom hoping for a long and happy marriage.

Wednesdays and Fridays are generally considered unlucky for weddings, as well as the month of May (“marry in May, repent for aye”), the whole of Lent and, in some places, even Easter week. (The Boss and I were married on a Friday in 1975 – so far, so good!)

The bride must be careful not to see her reflection in the mirror once she is fully dressed for the ceremony, and she must on no account turn back once she has left home. It’s also unlucky for the bride and groom to leave the reception by a back door. And of course everyone knows that they should not see each other on their wedding day until they meet in church.

Weddings used to be timed to start at five past the hour so that the clock wouldn’t strike during the service – another bad omen. And if the ringers didn’t think they had been paid enough, they had their own back by ringing the bells backwards as a kind of curse.

The rice which is sometimes thrown at the

happy couple is for plenty and a pair of old shoes tied to the honeymoon car is supposed to symbolise the transfer of authority over the woman from her father to her husband – certainly not an acceptable idea nowadays!

A black cat running in front of the couple on their way to the reception brings good luck, but no bride can wish for a better start to her marriage than to leave the church and be met by a chimney sweep. He may have been specially placed there, but the good luck is just the same.

It’s said that the tradition comes from the eighteen century when a chimney sweep saved the life of King George III. The sweep caught the reins of a frightened horse which was carrying the king to his wedding. He disappeared into the crowd before the king could thank him and, knowing that he would never recognise the man under all his grime, the king gave instructions that all chimney sweeps were to be treated with honour and respect.

So if you’re planning a wedding this summer, be sure to follow these instructions and you won’t go far wrong!

“I live in a privately rented two-bedroom house and the damp in the living room is aggravating my three-year-old daughter's asthma. I’ve told my landlord but she’s not taking action. What can I do?”

Resolving damp issues can be difficult - especially as the cause of the problem is not always obvious. Also, by raising any disrepair complaint to a private landlord it’s important to realise that there is a risk of retaliatory eviction.

First, make sure you’re not doing anything that could be contributing to the damp, such as drying clothes indoors or blocking vents.

Once that’s done, you have two potential routes available.

The first is to report the problem to the Environmental Health department at your local authority. This route is best if you’re unsure what’s causing the damp, but it’s also an option if you think your landlord is responsible.

Tell your council the damp is causing your daughter’s asthma to worsen and provide evidence, including letters from your GP, photos of the damp, and a copy of your tenancy

agreement.

The local authority can issue an awareness notice, which tells your landlord there’s a hazard in the home and what she needs to do to fix it, although it does not require her to take action. The authority can also serve the more serious improvement notice, which requires your landlord to carry out the work and also offers you some protection from retaliatory eviction.

Alternatively, you could take her to court.

Your landlord may be held responsible for repairing the damp but this will depend on the cause - such as a broken heater or window and the terms of your tenancy agreement.

If she is responsible, the court can grant an injunction and possibly award compensation.

Seek advice from us before going down this route because the legal process can be complex. You may also be entitled to legal aid.

Teme Valley Wildlife “April brings the primrose sweet, scatters daisies at our feet” The turning seasons are wonderful to watch.

Every year the close of winter and the start of spring is the change most eagerly awaited, and most enthusiastically greeted. The Meteorological Office considers 1st March the first day of spring, but it is traditionally celebrated much later in the month. This year it began on 20th March. The earliest signs of life out of winter are detectable well before then. As early as February delicate snowdrops come into flower, but although the sight of them is very welcome, their pure white blooms retain a distinctly cold feel. Likewise, lambs-tail hazel catkins can be seen dancing in the breeze, but in February, the breeze remains somewhat chilly. By March the earliest primroses appear, “prima rosas” or “first flowers”, put their pale yellow heads above the green grass, but it isn’t until April that wildflowers burst into a wash of colour and spring is clearly unstoppable.

Continued from page 23 hard to put on a show in spring too. As a fan of the National Garden Scheme, which opens up private gardens to members of the public for charitable causes, I can recommend some beautiful manmade places to visit and enjoy in the spring.

My favourites are Little Malvern Court in Worcestershire and Millichope Park in Shropshire. The former lies in the lee of the Malvern Hills next to the inscrutable Little Malvern Priory. This lovely garden has legions of spring bulbs and the most exquisite weeping cherry trees whose blossoms bow down at the edge of tranquil pools. Millichope, in the lee of Wenlock Edge, has wildflower meadows filled to the brim with cowslips and spotted-orchids and fragrant woodlands blue with a mass of bluebells. Both gardens reward the visitor and given that I visited the first garden in pouring rain, its effect must have been overwhelming to have enchanted me so much!

I must mention another garden east of the Malverns. Thank you so much, Ian and Diane of the Teme Valley Wildlife Group, for recommending Birtsmorton Court garden. It is absolutely stunning. And en route I saw wild bee-orchids for the first time ever, what a day!

What I’d put into Room 101

Last week I bought a couple of drinks in a pub.

They cost £6.65. I pulled a £10 note from my pocket plus a carefully counted £1.66 of loose change. If you’re any good at maths you’ll know that I expected to receive change of £5 (a note) plus one penny. What I was actually given was £4.91 in a lot of coins.

I felt really, really angry, not about the 10p short change, but about the return of coins I had hoped to be rid of.

Flashing road signs

A new 30mph sign was recently erected near my home so I pass it frequently. What annoys me is that it flashes up in lights to let me know that I’m going too fast well before I’ve reached the restricted zone or slowed down. It feels as if the nanny state just got more nannyish.
