CURIOUS EDUCATION T

he Montessori system consists of Multiaged Grouping, The 3-Hour Work Period, Observation, and Independence. Montessori also tries to connect nature with the children and vice versa. The site location is a problematic situation since it is located on the main highway towards Lewiston, Idaho. There is constant traffic with an environment of asphalt. The solution was to create a contextual reference to the surrounding urban energy and hybridizing it with something the children could explore and practice what they are taught. There are certain aspects of the building that have been designed specifically for the children, such as a underground tunnel that leads from the classroom to the gathering space, or the sublime main lobby with hanging abstract sculptural forms that inspires their imagination. Finally, there is an entire green roof system with a life sized chess set where the children can play, read, and discuss the information they are learning at the time.

Lack of Nature - The Montessori system believes heavily in connecting the children with nature. Being the nature of the site is in an urban context, nature is almost nonexistent.

Heavy Traffic - The site location is at the corner of an constantly busy intersection. This presents a danger to the children.

Urban Project: Portland Courtyard Complex

T

he architectural intent of this project is a collage of solutions addressing multiple architectural problems in this specific area. This final mass is a formal reaction to the positive and negative energy the site promotes. This result also creates two types of courtyards, one for the public and another for the residents. Altogether it is a combination of the traffic energy, view orientation, and finally a division between the functions of commercial and residential. The bend of the mass is the reaction of traffic energy on 23rd and sinks inwards to allow for crowds as well as gesturing people into the courtyard who are coming from 22nd. The mass bends also promotes the best views in this area as they are limited due to the relationship between the 22nd and 23rd and the surrounding environment. Finally, the separations of commercial and residential allows for a public courtyard with multipurpose activities and a private courtyard in the back for the residents.

DIRECTIONALITY

T

he arboretum is a place of relaxation and tranquility. How can it be used however, if no one knows of its existence? The concept behind this pavilion is to draw and motion people into the tranquil garden. As the roof overhangs the sidewalk and part of the road, it catches your attention: especially if you are traveling East. There is a blind spot when traveling that direction and people pass the Arboretum without actually knowing it exists.

Safari

hese three pieces are a series of paintings focusing towards native African animals in a technique that captures the mood and feel of their environment. Each piece has a stimulating effect to liven the paintings and encompass the vibrancy a African Safari while stylizing the animals to give them a contrasting characteristic. The resulting effect causes them to pop out of the painting and really engage the viewer. My personal goal someday is to go on a Safari with my wife and explore the vast deserts of Africa while encountering fascinating animals.

he inspiration for this set was to celebrate the flame. An elevation of the purpose for their existence. The Votive is a humble accent promoting the candle and its flame and the Hurricane Stand is derived from the dynamics of how a single flame moves when disturbed. The two are combined into one single elegant piece with the Candle Stick holder that serves as a transition piece between the humble beginnings of the Votive and the smooth celebration of the Hurricane.
