This past week our grandchildren spent some time with us and we played everthing from “Old Maid” to “Sorry.” It had been a long time since I had played any board game or any card game. One of the games we played when our kids were growing up was “Monopoly.” This past week I learned a lot about the Monopoly game and hope our readers enjoy the information as much as I did. How Uncle Pennybags Got Rich The game we call Monopoly was invented as an object lesson in the evils of capitalism. Evidently it was one of history’s greatest failures. Who knows how many future raiders and real-estate moguls were corrupted with greed at a tender age? Parker Brothers acquired the rights to the game in 1935, from its supposed inventor, an out-of-work salesman named Charles Darrow. The price was $7,000 plus residuals. Parker Brothers figured that it had overpaid. During the Depression, people were short of cash but at only $2 the game qualified as cheap entertainment. In its first year, Parker Brothers sold 278,000 copies. In 1936, it sole 1.75 million. Monopoly gave people “a feeling of wealth,” a Parker descendant noted, when little in the real economy did. The brass at Parker Brothers could not believe their luck. They obtained a patent – monopolizing Monopoly, as it were. To buttress the patent claim, they needed a “creation story”, a version of how the ark landed at their door. Darrow obliged. He recounted how, unemployed and with a wife and two children to care for, he retreated to the basement of his Philadelphia home night after night. Finally, he had it: Monopoly. Darrow’s story, which the company publicized and which Darrow was to repeat in endless interviews, was itself a capitalist fable. Calvin Trillin would call it a “nice, clean, well-structured example of the Eureka School of American industrial legend.” It did not happen to be true, as Mary Pilon recounts in her engaging book, “The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World’s Favorite Board Game.” According to Ms. Pilon, Darrow’s account was “somewhere between a stretch of the facts and a lie.” Monopoly was actually inspired by the “Landlord’s Game”, the creation of a turn-of-the-century feminist ho was also an inventor, writer and single-taxer, Elizabeth Magie (1866-1948). Single-taxers were followers of the political evangelist Henry George, who advocated a “single” tax on land, a leveling of social inequities and an end to monopolies. Gorge had a cult following in the 1880s and ‘90s. He never won office or instituted a tax, but Magie, the daughter of an abolitionist, kept the faith for decades. The Landlord’s Game gained a following in a utopian community in Delaware that was based on George’s principles. (Among its members was Upton Sinclair.) Players moved around a board, buying and selling properties, with railroads located in the middle of each side and one square bluntly direction, “GO TO JAIL.” Informally, players began to cal it “the monopoly game.” According to an early devotee, “the purpose of the game was to illustrate the evils of the capitalist system.” Magie invented two versions. In one, wealth created was shared by all participants. This excited no one. The other rewarded players for crushing the competition. That was fun. Ms. Pilon, a first-time author, staples together several narratives that are more interrelated than it first appeared. One of them offers an interesting, albeit brief, history of board-game promoters. Milton Bradley believed that games should teach morality. In 1860, he had a hit with “Checkered Game of Life.” Players who landed on a square marked “Gambling” were led to “Ruin.” (Other squares denoted “Intemperance” and “Idleness.”) George Parker, scion of a shipping family in Salem, Massachusetts, was a generation younger and rather more daring. He thought games should be entertaining – not to mention profitable for their purveyors. Parker Brothers scooped up titles and challenged the patents of rivals with the zeal of a Monopoly fiend putting a hotel on Boardwalk. As leisure time and electric lighting became more common, the game industry thrived, although during the Depression the company might have failed had it not stumbled upon Monopoly. The heart of “The Monopolists” describes how the game originally invented by Magie (later, Elizabeth Magie Phillips) evolved on homemade oilcloth boards, gradually accruing contemporary features, such as a Free Parking space and like-colored property groups. Especially after World War I, the game seems to have gone

viral in scattered communities in the northeast and among select circles at the Wharton School and Columbia University. Ultimately, it caught on in Atlantic City, New Jersey, especially among Quakers, who were prospering as hotelkeepers. Property names were copied from the city’s streets, ritzy and otherwise (the low-rent Baltic Avenue was taken from a street inhabited by African-Americans). Ms. Pilon traces a chain of players leading to its supposed inventor. B y the time Darrow first saw the game, in Philadelphia no earlier than 1932, it was widely played, if unpublicized, and little different from Monopoly today. Darrow’s contribution was to enlist an artist (probably responsible for the mustachioed tycoon who is the game’s emblem), improve the board’s appearance, slap the word “Monopoly” across it, apply for a copyright and initiate commercial production. Ms. Pilon’s final subplot, which occupies too much of the book, tells the story of Ralph Anspach, a left-leaning economics professor at San Francisco State University who, in the mid-1970s, invented a trust-busting game he called Anti-Monopoly. Parker Brothers charged him with trademark infringement. By then, Parker had acquired Magie Phillips’ old patent and had figured it was immune to competitors. The legal battle took an unexpected turn when Mr. Anspach decided to investigate the validity of Parker Brothers’ original trademark. This brings the story back to Charles Darrow and the game’s origins. There are lots of interesting concepts at play here, at least if you happen to be a copyright lawyer. The plot takes through copyrights (who can distribute), trademarks (who can use a name) and patents (who has the right to restrict others from similar methods and devices). Ms. Pilon, formerly a reporter at this newspaper and at the New

York Times, brushes over the complexities a bit too quickly, perhaps because she so clearly sympathizes with Mr. Anspach’s David as opposed to the game company’s Goliath. Parker Brothers, in the 1970s, was owned by the behemoth cereal maker General Mills (it has since been acquired by Hasbro), a fact that the author seems to hold against it. Just to make sure we understand who is on the side of the angels, she repeatedly references Mr. Anspach’s strapped circumstances and his “rumpled” threads. The men from Parker Brothers, by contrast, were “dressed in suits and ties,” she says revealingly on page 142. There is a further sartorial expose on page 147, when the author glimpses the company’s lawyers in “crisp pressed suits”; then, on page 214, as the case moves through the appeals process, the company brings on additional counsel who are dressed – you won’t believe this – “in suits.” I may be biased (I own a suit or two myself), but emphasizing such stereotypes tends to obscure the underlying subtleties. Although Darrow clearly inflated his role in Monopoly’s development – a key component in

This week is Halloween. For the past few years, the school has put their class decorations on the street corners in our town. I guess our town is small enough for the classes to do that. I can’t imagine that a larger town, like Oklahoma City or Tulsa, could do that; so, there are many times you can think that it is nice to live in a small town. It is interesting to see the decorations that go up each year. The way that Halloween is celebrated has certainly changed over the years. Many years ago, the most that happened was that toilets were turned over.

I never have lived in a large city, so I only have observed how things were done in the small towns I have lived in. Sometime in the late 1950s, a new housing addition in our town began to get most of the trickor-treaters, as it seemed to be the best place to go to get away from most of the traffic. The residents have learned that they all were going to have a lot of visitors that night and stock up on treats to be given out. The past few years, our Chamber of Commerce has had an afternoon program, where Halloween

costumes are judged and local churches have hosted functions for the public. These draw a crowd and are much-anticipated each year. I just looked at the calendar and realized that this year, another one, is almost over. The month jumped out at me. This is the month that Andrew Rooney died, three years ago. I was a fan and tried to watch his program each week. He was the last one to appear each night on Sixty Minutes. His humor, to me, was different. One subject I especially remember was on the “chair.” He talked about

Services for Billy Lee Griffin, 85, of Allen are 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, October 29th, at the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Allen, Rev. David McDougal will officiate. Burial will follow at the Allen Cemetery. Mr. Griffin passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at his home. He was born August 15, 1930 at Brashear, Texas to W. J. and Stella Viola Martin Griffin. He graduated from Allen High School. Billy married Katie Glendene Prentice September 28, 1953 in Allen. He worked as an operator for Sun Oil Company and later he was a Station Operator for Texoma Pipeline. He was a member and deacon of the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church and had served in the U. S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Glendene, of the home; his children, Marla Tinkler and husband David of Ada, Bruce Griffin of Gerty, and Leah Tidwell and husband Todd of Norman; four grandchildren, Conner Tinkler and wife Rikki, Norman, Dylan Tinkler, Ada, Kelsey Tidwell, Stillwater, and Matthew Tidwell, Norman; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Lennon Tinkler; two nephews, Jay Lynn Crawford and wife Karen, Mesa, Arizona and Terry Dean Ferguson, Prescott, Arizona; a special niece, Rita Crawford, Tempe, Arizona; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Stella Kirby; step-father, E. L. Kirby; three brothers, Maurice Dale Ferguson, Tommy Ferguson and J. A. Ferguson; and a sister, Laverne Scarlett. Bearers will be Conner Tinkler, Dylan Tinkler, Matthew Tidwell, Danny McDougal, Charles Henry and Robert Hammond. Honorary bearers will be Ronny Janda, Darrell Janda, Terry Janda and Kerry Caldwell. One Pharmacist’s View S everal years ago my dad was going through sort of a crisis. He had already retired and fallen into a routine but he had become edgy and seemed harder all the time to please. He was restless and was having some difficulty with all the extra time he had due to his retirement. He was not very well but it was not an uncommon situation for guys his age. One day my older brother Gerald called and, after discussing the situation and both of us wondering what would be best for him, Gerald said he had a good idea. Dad needed to get away and go with him to the Northern Territories this summer and get in some real good fishing and recreation with him and a bunch of his Wyoming fishing pals. “I’ll fly down and pick him up at Ada and we will go back up to Upton. We

will then fly up to Canada with the guys. It’ll be great fun and it will do him a world of good. When I get done with him he’ll be a new man.” So they did. From Canada they took a big old obsolete “water” plane charter to a fishing camp in the far north that only had visitors in the summer months. The ice had just come off the lake and a crew had made the rustic cabins ready to go and stocked. A guide looked after their needs to some extent but the men took turns cooking and doing the KP. Turned out KP was one of dad’s most favorite events. They cooked up a lot of food and had a lot of fellowship. Things were looking good and it would be nice to say the therapy worked.

When the phone rang at the church office, the preacher answered by saying, “Hello, this is the church of Christ.” The telemarketer said, “May I speak to the head of the household, Please?” Immediately, the preacher responded, “You want to speak to Jesus?” Then the preacher heard, “What?! I would like to speak to the head of the household, please.” Then the preacher said, “Ma’am, this is the church of Christ and I’m only the minister, Jesus is the head of the church!” The abrupt reply then came, “Oh! I’m sorry!” Then, there was a click on the line as the line fell dead. Isn’t Jesus Christ the head of His church? In referring to Jesus Christ, the inspired Apostle Paul wrote, “He is the head of the body, the church.” (Colossians 1:18) Have you read any place in the Scriptures where Jesus gave authority to a man to be head of His church? Yet, there are men who seem to think or act as if they are the head of the church! They seem to think they have the authority to change the structure, worship or divine plan as Christ ordained it for His church.

Mustangs still in playoff hunt going into week 9 Allenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 32-14 win over Maysville fuels chase for post-season bid

By HERMAN BROWN Allen correspondent The Allen Mustangs kept their 2015 playoff hope alive last Friday with a 32-14 win over Maysville Warriors. Coach Steven Caldwellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mustangs will tackle an even bigger challenge this weekend against the Geary Bison. Geary is a perfect 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the B-2 standings. The Bison have scored 427 points and allowed 82 in eight games. GHS shares first place with Alex in the district with two games remaining in the regular season. Allen is 5-3 overall and 4-3 in B-2 play. The Mustangs have scored 388 points and given up 292 points. Allen currently shares fourth place with Cyril The Mustangs will host Cyril on November 6 in the Week 10 final contest. A visit to the playoffs will be up for grabs when they meet. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our win last Friday (vs. Maysville) sets up a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;winner goes on and loser goes homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in Week 10 against Cyril,â&#x20AC;? said Coach Caldwell. Allenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Week 9 game, however, still has the Mustangs focused on the

unbeaten Bison this Friday night. Coach Caldwell certain had his Mustangs ready to compete in their recent game with Maysville. Allen raced away to leads of 6-0 in the first quarter, 20-0 in the second quarter and 26-0 in the third quarter. The Mustangs also scored again in the fourth quarter to swell the lead to 32-0. Maysville responded with a pair of late touchdowns en route to the 3214 lead. Allen opened the scoring on Colten Browningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 10-yard run at the 10:18 to make it a 6-0 game. In the second quarter, the Mustangs used Colton Frederickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 9-yard run at 8:27 to up the lead to 12-0. Allen also scored on Christian Henryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 20-yard TD pass from Frederick with only 21 seconds. Frederick also added the conversion run to make it a 20-0 going into the break. Allen continued the scoring streak at the 3:19 mark of the third quarter. Frederick blasted into the end zone on a 4-yard keeper to increase the lead to 26-0. The Mustangs swelled the lead to 32-zip at the

10:35 mark of the fourth quarter. Joe Howshar rumbled into the end zone on a 17-yard scoring run to cap the Mustangs total to 32-0. Maysville broke onto the scoreboard at the 9:50 mark. The Warriors found the end zone on a 4-yard TD pass play. Maysville also added a conversion run to make it a 32-6 game. Maysville added the second and final touchdown on a 53-yard TD pass with 7:01 to play. The TD rounded out the score at 32-14. Allen generated 24 first downs and 507 yards of total offense. The Mustangs rushed for 477 yards and passed for 30 more. Maysville had five first downs and 190 yards. The Warriors were limited to 37 yards on 19 carries. They were more successful for the passing attack with 153 yards on 11 completions. Allen was led by Colten Browning, who returned from an injury a week earlier. Browning rushed for 217 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He also hauled in three passes for 10 yards. Colton Frederick also returned from injuries to give the Mustangs a lift.

yard touchdown grab. Three others are also on the list, including Garrett Wallis with 9 carries for 32 yards, Tadyn Walker with 2 carries from 19 yards, and Ty Brown with 2 carries for 19 yards. The win over Maysville was very important to the playoff hopes for the Mustangs. After this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contest, Allen will prepare for a win or go home showing with Cyril.

east on Arkansas Tours. The tour visited fourteen states including New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and others. A visit to Niagara Falls took them to both the U.S. and the Canadian side. They viewed the colorful foliage in many states and saw many wonderful sights besides.

Friday evening they attended the OSU Homecoming “Walk Around” in Stillwater and Saturday Cindy spent time with her grandchildren while Amanda and Chris attended the OSU/Kansas Game. Sunday, Amanda, Cindy and the boys went to the Affair of the Heart at the OKC fairgrounds. —O&A— John Frederick is home following double knee surgery earlier this week.
