Elementary Enrollment Underway

Meet & Greet Tuesday, August 16

For new students in the Allen school District, enrollment will begin August 1, 2016. The elementary office is open from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday. New students will be required to submit a copy of: birth certificate, social security card, current immunization record, proof of residency, and CDIB card (if applicable).

The elementary and middle school will host a “meet and greet” night on Tuesday, August 16th, from 4:30 to 6:30. This will allow the students and parents to meet this year’s teacher and locate their room. Students may bring their school supplies at this time.

The staff of Allen School is looking forward to the 2016-17 school year.

The goal is to use the gun to help keep the officer and citizens safer. They will receive extensive training on the use of the weapon. Chief Sanford chose the devices, which can deliver a 50,000-volt shock as they subdue aggressive people, over a pepper spray gun.

There was a lone bid on the property placed on sealed bid last month.

The bid for the amount of $1,500 was accepted.

The council was informed of employee Coy West’s retirement. Mr. West was an outstanding worker and took much pride in his work and worked very hard to make the cemetery a place where Allen citizens could be proud The town council would like to extend a big thanks to Coy for all

of his years of hard work.

We are sure now in his spare time he will drop by and tell Nub Rinehart and Doug Stinson what they are doing wrong. Thanks Coy and we hope you get to feeling better. On that

note Doug Stinson was instructed to find a part time temporary worker to help catch up on the weed eating and mowing.

Allen High School Enrollment Begins Next Week

Allen students entering the 7th and 8th grades will need to enroll at the high school office next Tuesday, August 9th, between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Those entering the 7th grade will need to have verification of having received the TDAP vaccine.

F reshmen and sophomore students will register Wednesday, the 10th; and Allen junior and seniors will be enrolled on Thursday. Again, the office will be open from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

New students, entering the Allen Schools for the first time, may register any of those days and should bring with them verification of residency, their birth certificate, Social Security card, shot record, and their CDIB card if applicable.

Enrollment paperwork is currently available for pick up at the high school office. This may be completed and returned at the student’s time of registering.

Girls Physicals Aug 4

Athletic physicals will be given free of charge to students planning to play sports for Allen High School during the 2016-17 school year.

Lady Mustangs are asked to report at 6:30 p.m. today, Thursday, August 4th, to the high school for their examinations; the boys’ physical times will be set at a later date.

Permission forms, requiring the signatures of parents/ guardians, are available on-line or currently in the high school office, Monday thru Thursday.

Masonic Breakfast

Join the Allen Masonic Lodge for breakfast Saturday, August 6th, from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., at the Lodge on West Broadway. The breakfast fund-raisers are held the first Saturday of each month with a menu of sausage, biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, hash browns and coffee.

The meal will be served free of charge but donations will be accepted and greatly appreciated.

Hadleigh is trying to teach her mother, Allen Fire Department volunteer Shayna Ross, how to handle a fire hose as they water the Allen softball field. If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, please contact the Allen City Hall. Your help is needed and appreciated.

About this time in any presidential political year the national pundits run out of things to say about the candidates for office. They revert to the tried and true castigation of “negative” advertising.

Somewhere in the railing about comparative ads, some commentator will say, “This is the ‘dirtiest’ campaign on record.” Not even close!

Earlier in our nation’s history, politicians literally worked in a “free fire” zone. There was no subject, no charge or no insult that was off limits.

One of my favorite examples was the campaign for President in 1796. Federalist John Adams was running against Democratic Republican candidate Thomas Jefferson. There was no incumbent President because George Washington had decided not to seek another term.

This particular election was a stem-winder. It started off with the Federalists distributing a pamphlet that charged Jefferson with being a dangerous radical.

They also said he cheated his creditors and was a coward when facing British troops during the Revolution-

ary War. Not to be outdone, the Jefferson supporters fought back. They started a rumor that Adams planned to marry one of his sons to the daughter of King George III of England to start a new American monarchy with Adams as King.

In the final days of the 1796 campaign, it looked as if Jefferson might win the Presidency. Adams supporters pulled out the final stops and started a rumor that Jefferson had just died.

Though history failed to record the popular vote, Adams went on to be the second President of the United States. He won the Electoral College with a narrow 71 to 68 margin over Jefferson.

History is littered with “dirty” campaigns in our history. In a race for Congress in 1828, John Randolph, a powerful member of the House said this about his opponent. “He is a man of splendid abilities, but utterly corrupt. Like a rotten mackerel by moonlight, he shines and stinks.”

In the Presidential campaign of 1884, Grover Cleveland was accused of fathering a child out of wedlock. His opponents would organize hecklers to populate crowds at his campaign rallies.

The hecklers would shout, “Ma, Ma, where’s my Pa?” Eventually, the Cleveland supporters would shout back, “Gone to Washington!”

Mud slinging campaigns have not been confined to this country. In 19th century England, the

Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montague, was running for Parliament. In one of the campaign debates he predicted that his opponent, John Wilkes, “would either die on the gallows or of a loathsome disease.”

Wilkes quickly shot back, “That depends, my lord, on whether I embrace your politics or your mistress!”

The tradition of the political putdown is even older than American politics. In ancient Greece, the philosopher Aristophanes was asked what he thought of a young man that was seeking political office.

He replied, “He has all the characteristics of a popular politician: a horrible voice, bad breeding and a vulgar manner.”

As we roll into the November election, remember, “dirty” politics has a long and sordid history. Even with today’s electronic enhancements, campaigns today cannot hold a candle to what has gone on in the past.

A REAL COLLEGE EDUCATION It started at The Ohio State University one April day: A bunch of students (between 80 and 150) illegally occupied a building to protest some kind of grievance.

But it ended with the students getting a lesson they’d apparently never been taught before.

Instead of coddling the occupiers outside the president’s office, Vice President Jay Kasey showed up with a message from the president: He wouldn’t receive a list of their demands, he wouldn’t negotiate with them, and if the students didn’t clear out that evening, they’d be arrested and “discharged from school.”

A stunned student asked: “Discharged, as in . . .?”

Kasey’s one word reply: “Expelled.”

It worked: The students took off that evening.

Which brings us back to that lesson we mentioned: Actions have consequences.

Now that’s a real education—one more schools need to teach.

Devotion of the Week

Getting lost is something that comes naturally to me.

At times I feel as though I was born with no sense of direction or the ability to use a compass.

Once, while driving my sons to a birthday party, they could sense I didn’t know where I was going. As I liked at the slip of paper in my hand that contained directions and an address, and looked from side to side at a four-way stop sign, not knowing what to do next, my eldest son said, “Are we lost yet, Dad?” He knew if I wasn’t I soon would be. His confidence was inspiring!

Fortunately, a police officer on a motorcycle saw me looking at the piece of paper and offered to help me. With compassion he asked, “May I help you, Sir?” Of course I said, “Yes,” and with a great sign of relief gave him the address of the party. He gave me careful and complete instructions. Then, looking at me and realizing I had no idea what he was talking about said with great compassion, “Never mind. Follow me, I’ll get you there.”

And it worked. In a few moments I looked at the name and address on the mail box and knew that I had arrived at my destination safely.

In the maze of life with its constant confusion and complex choices we often need help. David said, “I cling to You; Your right hand upholds me.” Jesus, realizing our lost condition said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.

Follow me.”

God keeps those safe who follow His directions.

“Boss,” he said,”we’re doing some heavy housecleaning at home tomorrow, and my wife needs me to help with the attic and garage, moving and hauling stuff.”

“We’re short-handed,” the supervisor replied. “I can’t give you the day off.”

Needed - A Few New Fire Fighters surrounding towns ordinance it was decided to make an amendment to the current ordinance on mobile homes.

A report was giving on the progress of the rehab of the Alumni building for use as the Senior Nutrition site. Forest Neal of the firm Redland Childers Architects from Ada, is finalizing the plans to be submitted to the state fire marshall. He reports that once it gets to the state office there is usually a minimum of 5 month wait time before evaluation of the project begins.

Fire Chief Mike McCarn asked to approve a request for county tax money to purchase a pump for the department.

He also discussed the need for more volunteer fire fighters for Allen. These hard working individuals spend countless hours

protecting our community from fire and come to the aid of citizens in numerous ways. You can never have too many. We encourage anyone with an interest to submit their name to City Hall and a fire fighter will get in touch with you and answer any questions you may have.

The police report included a break down of call for the month of July: motorist assist, reckless driving, animal call, clear debris from roadway, noise complaint, civil stand by, medical assists, OSBI investigation, adult protective services, vandalism, aided with summer lunch program, suspicious person, suspicious vehicle, auto burglary, fireworks, medical records, 4 wheeler reckless driving and possible stolen vehicle.

Services Friday for Lynn Milner

Services for Edgar Lynn Milner, 58, of Allen are 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 5th, at the Allen School Auditorium, Rev. Chad Kaminski will officiate.

Burial will follow at the Allen Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Allen Chapel from 4:00 p.m. Thursday until service time.

Mr. Milner passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016, in Oklahoma City. He was born September 26, 1957 in Ada to Phillip and Bobbie Dean Milner.

He attended Allen schools and graduated from Allen High School.

He married Debbie Lea Cook on August 18, 1985.

Mr. Milner was an oilfield pumper for Stephens Engineering. He was an avid

hunter, fisherman and gardener.

S urvivors include his wife, Debbie Lea, of the home; his mother, Bobbie Milner of Allen; a son, Justin Lee Milner, Allen; two sisters, Donna Wainscott and husband Robbie of Gerty and Debbi Milner of Allen; four uncles, Fuzzy Milner and Guy Milner, both of Ada, Max Milner of Claremore, and Don Milner of Oklahoma City; and an aunt, Shirley Wilcox and her husband Terry of Rancho Mirage, California; three nephews and one niece; two greatnephews and one greatniece.

H e was preceded in death by his father, Phillip Milner.

B earers will be Roger Byrd, Roger Rowsey, Kenny Moore, Terry Olivo, Jimmy Erwin and John Cundiff. Honorary bearers will be Rick Carter, Dale Jesse and Johnny Cozad.

Rites Saturday for Charles Baugus

Charles Junior Baugus, age 83, died Monday, August 1, 2016 in Oklahoma City, OK. Charles was born June 24, 1933 in Wetumka, OK. He was one of eight children born to Jack and Ollie Baugus.

Charles is survived by a daughter, Linda Roark and husband, Bruce Roark, of Allen. He also left behind four grandchildren: Kelly Logan of Allen, Corey Logan and wife Sarah of Stonewall, LeeAnn Starr and husband David of Aubrey, Texas, and Jennifer Egan and husband Doby of Watauga, Texas.

Charles has sixteen great grandchildren, Corey James Jr, Katie and Cole Logan of Stonewall, Chase Rupe and wife Courtney of Harrah, Patrick, Charlea and Trep Leonard, Ryland, Cayden and Karson Logan of Allen, Chad Starr

at Lisbon, North Dakota, Chelsea Starr of St. Martin, Minnesota, MacKenzie Starr of Aubrey, Texas, Connor Egan of Watauga, Texas, and Tanner and Tyler Lowry of Ada. He also has one great-greatgranddaughter, Hensley Mackedanz of Texas; and two great great-grandsons, Cooper and Cyle Rupe of Harrah; in addition to several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many good friends.

Charles was a Corporal in the Army stationed in Olympia, Washington from 1953 to 1955. Prior to that he, grew up in Wetumka OK and worked alongside his father at the family owned sawmill business. In July 25, 1951, he married Delores LaDean Kelly. They made their home in Wetumka for a short time before relocating to Kansas, Washington state and then to California where they made their home for several years.

They had two daughters, Linda Sue and April Lea. Charles enjoyed making visits to family, running errands with friends and collecting firearms. He was a financial supporter to many charities such

as Veterans of War, Alzheimer’s Research, St. Jude and programs such as CASA for abused and neglected children. He was also a very loyal and loving husband as well as a proud father and grandfather.

I n 1989, Charles retired from International Light Metals in Torrance California as a Machine Shop Supervisor and relocated to Ada Oklahoma to spend the remainder of his golden years with his sweetie, LaDean Baugus.

Services will be held this Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 10 am at Williamson Spradlin Funeral Home, and he will be interred in a family plot at the Wetumka Cemetery.

Charles was proceeded in death by wife, Delores LaDean Baugus; daughter, April Lowry; grandson William Lowry; and great granddaughter, Shyla Rupe as well as both his parents, Jack and Ollie Baugus, a brother Don Baugus and a sister, Wynnona Baugus.

H onorary Pall Bearers will be Corey Logan, Corey James Jr. Logan, Patrick Leonard, Trep Leonard, Chase Rupe and Kregg Leonard.

Memorial Service Sunday, August 7 for Lori Cozad Hill

Lori Cathleen Cozad Hill, 38, passed away at her home in Merritt Island, Florida, on Wednesday, July 20, 2016.

In accordance with Lori’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at 5:00 PM, at The Tides Collocated Club, 1001 North Highway, A1A S Atlantic Ave, Patrick AFB, FL 32925. Following the Life Celebration, some of Lori’s ashes will be scattered on the beach she so dearly loved.

Lori sought solace in the ocean and beach, where she found peace watching the waves roll in. It was a place she could meditate and be with the abundant wildlife that call the ocean and beaches home.

For Lori’s many friends and family who live around Oklahoma and Kansas, a second Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Free

Will Baptist Church, in Allen, Oklahoma at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 7, 2016. Following the service, brief comments and interment of Lori’s ashes will be in the Allen Cemetery.

Lori was born on July 11, 1978, to Judy A. Young (Cozad) and Johnny Wayne Cozad.

Lori lived in Oklahoma until she was six years old, when she began to travel and see the world via her mother’s assignments in the U.S. Air Force. The first stop was San Antonio, Texas, where Lori entered first grade. She quickly made friends, and was soon on the soccer team and the cheerleading squad.

Both of these activities followed her as she and her mother moved to the next Air Force assignment at Lajes Field, Air Force Base. From the Azores, Lori and her mother moved to Germany.

In the summer of 1993, Lori felt the tug of “home” (Oklahoma), and left Germany to live in Allen, Oklahoma, with her father, Johnny. There she attended Allen High School and met friends with whom she remained in contact for the rest of her life. For her Senior year in High School, Lori

went to Ada High.

After graduation from Ada High, Lori began college at Oklahoma State University (OSU), but she quickly discovered that she wasn’t ready for fulltime college and living away from home, so she returned to Ada where she took part time classes at ECU. She began working for a women’s clothing store chain, where she climbed the ladder quickly, and at the age of 19, became the youngest store manager in a multistate region. This led to an offer by the district manager, for Lori to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma to assume the assistant manager position of one of the Tulsa stores. Lori jumped at the chance, and moved to Tulsa.

While in Tulsa, Lori married, gave birth to beautiful daughters Bailee and Kayli, and began working for American Airlines. In March 2004, Lori and her family moved to Florida, to be near her mother.

After moving to Florida, and while working as a pharmacy tech for Walgreens, Lori decided it was time to go back to school. She and her family moved to Savannah, Georgia, where she attended South University

School of Pharmacy. In 2012, she graduated with a doctorate of pharmacy (PharmD) degree. Her family was so very proud of her, and all joined her in Savannah for a weekend of celebration!

Following graduation, Lori and family moved back to Florida, where she began working as a pharmacist with Walgreens. At the time of her death, Lori was a pharmacist for Mike’s Pharmacy, in Cape Canaveral, Florida. She loved her job, and the people she worked with.

Lori is survived by her mother and step father, Judy Young and Bob McLeran, of Merritt

Island, Florida, and her father, Johnny Cozad, of Allen, Oklahoma.

She is also survived by her beautiful daughters, Bailee, 16 and Kayli, 13, and Kayli’s father Joe Hill, of Melbourne, Florida. Lori has one living grandparent, Juanita Erwin, 94, of Augusta, Kansas. She is survived by loving aunts and uncles Harold and Beverly Erwin of Augusta, Kansas, Jimmy Erwin of Ada, Oklahoma, Kathy and Lester Moore, of Atoka, Oklahoma, and Pam and Bob Loomis of Marietta, Oklahoma.

She has 12 cousins, and numerous second cousins.

From a loving father to my precious daughter.

I’ve lived and breathed you all your life and will remain to do so. My heart is broken and the hurt is so deep I know it will never leave me. You were the best thing that ever happened to me. All I ever wanted to do was to love and protect you and be with you. I failed in protecting you, but you are in God’s hands now.

I’m so sorry I failed you and hopefully when my time comes we can talk and be together once again.

I will continue to be so proud of you as I always have.

You will forever be in my heart and your precious memories will always be with me. I will never turn loose. Lori, my precious, darling, sweet baby I will always miss you. You will always be my pride and joy.

One Pharmacist’s View I would be lying if I said I didn’t like to observe politics. And this presidential election cycle has been nothing if not entertaining. In fact it’s like a bad accident. You feel compelled to look whether you want to or not. I was sitting in a doctor’s office up in Tulsa a few days ago and this old man looked at me and I knew he was going to say something. He did. “I always vote but I ain’t voting for Hillary or Donald, either one” he said. Since we had been sitting there about 30 minutes in silence his sudden political speech took me by surprise. I think he may represent a lot of people come November.

One Pro-Hillary journalist (aren’t they all?) was almost in tears last week as he begged Hillary to quit her lying. Just shut up! “You got this,” he wrote. “You just had a good convention. Your opponent just attacked the

Sounds a lot like what I’ve been hearing Trump supporters moaning about too. “He just needs to shut up” and “He needs to quit venting about the minor things that pop into his head.” So besides being obsessed with this dead hero and his Moslem Mom and Dad, he gets caught up in obsessing about the Fire Marshal in Columbus, Ohio. ISIS has warned that they will make more church attacks in the US in the future. Attacks like the one in Normandy, France in which an elderly Catholic Priest was attacked as he led morning mass in front of his horrified congregation. The old man was said to have been beheaded--an even more despicable crime--one that

is fairly typical of ISIS. Large churches across the US are hiring and training security forces to keep their worshipers safe. That’s a good idea I suppose but doesn’t do much for the thousands of small churches dotting the landscape in America-Churches barely making expenses are not going to hire security.

Meanwhile, an outraged President Obama again defended Moslems against such charges and again took to the press raging against Trump for being unkind to the Moslem parents of this dead war hero. To further show his contempt for the “American Will” he instructed the US Home Security

Department to certify Syrian Refugees trying to get in as political exiles and to let them in. And don’t worry, they not only are coming, they are probably already be here by the time you read this.

So let’s see here. Democrats are advising Hillary to just stop lying all the time. Trump’s loyal followers want him to stick to his selling points. His wall is important to many as is controlling immigration. Build up our military again. And what else?

Oh. Beating Hillary in November. That’s all.

Meanwhile, I hope all of you have a good weekend and are able to go to Church Sunday. I don’t think ISIS has hit Allen just yet.

Goodness Gracious Snakes Alive

by Danielle O’Daniel W hat happens when you see a snake? My first reaction is generally to scream like a little girl and maybe even run. As scared as I get seeing a snake, the ones I am most afraid of are the ones I do not see. Now, I know that not all snakes are poisonous and that many are actually helpful. Snakes often help control many different insects and rodents.

I can honestly say I do not know how to tell if a snake is poisonous or not.

However, I have no intention to try and handle a snake. This doesn’t mean I will not run into one at some point. It seems that most commonly people are bitten when they at-

tempt to handle a snake or because they did not see the snake and got too close for (the snakes’) comfort.

In Oklahoma there are actually seven different snakes that are venomous.

They are the copperhead, the western cottonmouth, the timber rattlesnake, the prairie rattlesnake, the western diamond-backed rattlesnake, the western massasauga rattlesnake and the western pygmy rattlesnake. All seven of these snakes are known as pit vipers, which means that they have heat-sensing pits on either side of their head.

R ecently there have been several snakebites in the area. It was reported that all the bites were de-

livered by copperheads.

Knowing that, I did some research and made a few phone calls in order to gather information from a knowledgeable source.

I was able to speak with Mark Howery on the phone. Mr. Howery is a wildlife biologist for the

Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

F emale copperheads typically live birth their babies most commonly around August. The first several months the babies have yellow on their tails that is used to lure in prey and frogs are typically the

bulk of their diet.

Now why does this pertain to the bites being more common? Well, seeing as the years 2013 and 2015 were so wet

M r. A s h b y p a s s e d away Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born November 6, 1959 in Liberal, Kansas to Johnny Augustine and Carol Nadine Drum Ashby. He graduated from Allen High School.

He married Kathie Diane Krebbs on September 5, 2001 in Allen. Mr. Ashby was a painter.

Rites held for Amy Short Amy Dawn (McCarn) Short of Arlington, Texas passed away on July 26, 2016. Amy was born on January 8th, 1969.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Goodson McCarn.

Amy is survived by her three children, sons Zakkrey James Short and Lucas Allen Short, and daughter Kaylin Belle Short all of Arlington, Texas.

Amy is also survived by her father, Don McCarn of Eufaula; sister Angie McCarn Faver and husband Lloyd of Fort Worth, Texas; brother Billy McCarn and wife Megan of Oklahoma City; aunts and uncles Jo Giancotti and husband Al of Allen, Jack and Sheryl Goodson of Atwood, Bobbie and Jim Hart of Oklahoma City, and Debbie and Bill Mercer of Oklahoma City. Amy also leaves numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Amy was born and raised in Holdenville, Oklahoma and graduated from Holdenville High School - Class of 1987.

Shortly after high school she married her high school sweetheart, Jim Short, also of Holdenville.

Amy and Jim moved to Arlington, Texas in 1989. They began their family and after deciding to dedicate her life to the love and service of others, she returned to college to obtain her nursing degree.

During her time as an RN, Amy was able to help and touch many lives who always referred to her as a “burst of sunshine”. Amy was always present and active as a young mother to her children and showed her dedication to her family through her constant love and unending support.

A celebration of life was held from 1:30 to

4:30 pm, Sunday, July 31st, at the home of her sister, Angie McCarn Faver in Fort Worth, Texas.

A service in Amy’s hometown of Holdenville, Oklahoma will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 4th at Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home, 301 East Main Street, Holdenville, OK 74848.

Memorial services for Michael Owen Pollard, 39, of Stonewall will be on July 30th at 10 a.m. at Rhynes Ranch.

Michael Owen Pollard was born on May 24, 1977 at Shawnee Medical Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Michael Lynn Pollard and J. Elaine West Pollard. He attended Byng and Allen Schools and Rose State College.

He previously worked at Burr Valley Ranch and was an avid fisherman.

Michael passed away on July 20, 2016 in Merritt Island, Florida. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Betty Jo Watson Pollard on March 6, 1987, and maternal grandmother, Tropa Mae Moore West on November 1, 2008.

Michael is survived by his son, Logan Coy Pollard of Ada and daughter, Bailee Michelle Pollard of Merritt Island, Florida; parents, David and J. Elaine Rhynes of Stonewall and Michael Lynn Pollard of Texarkana, Arkansas; maternal grandfather, Coy West of Allen; paternal grandparents, Glenn and Pam Pollard

Goodness Gracious Snakes Alive there was most likely an abundance of food for the young snakes so it could be that many more then normal were able to survive the last few years.

The copperhead has venom that is hemotomic.

This means that the venom affects the circulatory system, destroys blood cells, damages skin tissue and can cause internal hemorrhaging. Other symptoms that can occur may include extreme pain, swelling, weakness, breathing difficulty, rapid or weak pulse, nausea and vomiting, gangrene, fever, sweating, headache, unconsciousness and skin discoloration from bleeding under the skin.

The western pygmy rattlesnake can also be found in our area. These are very small and tend to be between 15 to 24 inches in

length. They are known to raise the front of their body and puff up to make themselves appear bigger then they actually are. The rattle is very small and often cannot be heard unless you are very close. These are most common in South Central Oklahoma and have been spotted in our area.

T he western cottonmouth has venom that is hemotoxic, more toxic then a copperhead. Hecrosis, which is cell death, happens at the site of the bite. It has been said that snakes do not bite under water, however fish are part of a cottonmouth’s diet. Cottonmouths are pretty common in Hughes County. However, just because it is a black snake does not mean it is a cottonmouth.

Cottonmouths are going to be found around water

and not somewhere where there is no water around.

The western diamondbacked rattlesnake is one of the more aggressive species. The majority of the venom is proteolysis, which means it destroys cells, blood and muscles with digestive fluid. These snakes like rocky habitats and are more in Southern Oklahoma. These snakes hibernate in groups so if you see one there are going to, most likely, be several.

The timber rattlesnake will rattle giving you plenty of time to avoid them and these seem be very uncommon in our area. It is said that timber rattlesnakes venom toxicity depends on their location.

The ones found in Oklahoma are said to be necrotic which means the venom attacks nerves and nerve

cells. It is also known as hemorrhagic which means it causes bleeding.

The prairie rattlesnake can tuck its head between its coils to appear to be more submissive but it can strike from this position.

The prairie rattlesnake is not known to our area.

The western massasauga rattlesnake has venom that contains specialized digestive enzymes that disrupt blood flow and prevents clotting but is not known to this area.

So now for some of the most important information. What do you do if a snake actually bites you?

I reached out to a knowledgeable source who is actually a Physicians Assistant in the emergency room at Seminole, Ross Wofford. They have seen between eight and ten snakebite patients in the last couple months.

First of all you should try not to panic. You actually want to keep your heart rate low so the venom is not pushed through your body as quickly. You can grab a bag of ice for swelling but if you think it is a venomous bite you should get to the emergency calmly, quickly and safely. Now the amount of venom distributed can depend of whether the snake’s bite was offensive (it is after a food source) or defensive (it is a warning attack or protecting itself).

M ost commonly bite victims are watched for swelling and other symptoms of a poisonous snakebite. This in some cases may mean a night or two in the Intensive Care Unit but does not always mean it was a deadly bite. Depending on the study you look at, 75 to 85 percent of snake bites are know as a dry bite. This means that there is little to no venom exchanged during the bite.

Now that leaves about 15 percent being considered a full bite. In those cases where a patient receives an anti-venom it is most commonly CroFab®.

Now, you do not neces-

sarily have to bring the snake with you to the emergency room. They actually can look at the bite and determine a lot about the bite just by looking at it. They can also tell whether it is a venomous or a non-venomous bite by observing the number of teeth marks left behind.

I would like to also inform you a little bit about some more common nonvenomous snakes. The rat snake is the biggest snake known to Pontotoc County. There are approximately 30 calls regarding snakes each year from the area of Pontotoc County and most often half of them are black snakes that are rat snakes. The most common snake is going to be the Texas brown snake, which is typically 9 to 13 inches long.

Some snakes hibernate during the hot summer, which tends to be July and August. While others may simply become nocturnal and only stir about from dusk to dawn.

If you would like further information on snakes, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife has a book about amphibians and reptiles of Oklahoma.
