526 Students Enrolled

Football Season Kicks off Friday

by Dr. Bill Caruthers Allen Public Schools are back in full swing and I am happy to say that we are growing this year. Although things may not be completely “gelled” until after Labor Day, but today it looks like our numbers in the Elementary grades PK-6 are at 307, while the JH count is 62. The High School has 157 in grades 9-12. That means that our grand total, as of right now is right around 526. Growth is a good thing in terms of funding and finances. So long as we are able to add students we are in a much better position to weather and overcome cuts to the school funding. Growth also means that we are extending an even greater commitment to our students Recess is still the best part of the day . . . even Pre-K students Kaylyn Malone moving forward. It is our responsibility to provide the and Chulainn Keeney know this basic fact. best educational experience that we can to our students and we intend to meet that responsibility head on. Being new here this year, I have spent a lot of time so far getting to know our staff and meet as many students as possible. It is not unusual for me to visit classes from time to time and I want everyone, staff and community alike, to know that that is something that will continue. As I have already communicated with our staff, it is not that I want to sneak around trying to “catch” them doing something wrong, I simply want to be available to help them do their absolute best for our kids…, and they deserve it! By the same token, our teachers and staff are showing themselves to be very open and eager for support and that is what I want to be all about. Starting the 2016-17 school year as 6th graders are Gary Raney, Zain Tillery, Ma Finally, I want to tell our students (and their parents), son Riley and Tagus Howard. those that I have met already and those who I will meet in the days and weeks ahead, that I have enjoyed these first few days on the job and you are a great big part of that! We have a solid staff here at the school and we are doing our best to provide strong, supportive leadership. I must say that it has been a very welcome surprise to find that our kids very receptive to positive change and very willing to adapt to our approach toward discipline and structure. I am open to listening to students and staff alike and they have been eager to share and let their feeling known. They have also been overwhelmingly supportive. That is not to say that things are perfect, nothing ever is, but I do think that we have had a very smooth start to school so far and I appreciate it very much. I would like to invite the entire community out to the football game Friday night. I will not be able to be at that game since our annual CCOSA/OSSBA Meetings are scheduled for the same time, but I look forward to Planning great things as they enter the 8th grade are Emily Sells, Jadyn Wilson, seeing you at all the rest. It is important that we let all Melanie Carlin, Emma Peay, Madison Dohlman and Peyton Spaulding. our kids know how much they mean to us as often as we can. Along that line, our softball girls have been steadily improving and the football boys are ready to go! Let’s show them as well as the rest of our students (Band and Cheerleaders included) that we appreciate their efforts. A little encouragement goes a long way!

by Bill Robinson, Publisher

First of all, my favorite story of the week . . . In an American-History discussion group, our professor was trying to explain how society’s ideal of beauty changes with time. “For example,” he said, “take the 1921 Miss America. She stood five feet, one inch tall, weighed 108 pounds and had measurements of 30-25-32. How do you think she’d do in today’s version of the contest?” The class fell silent for a moment. Then one student piped up, “Not very well.” “Why is that?” asked the professor. “For one thing,” the student pointed out, “She’d be way too old.” —CC— Now it’s time to share Chapter 2 from the 1948 “Teaching Tactics,” a handbook for teachers.

Teacher-Pupil Relationships • The teacher without drive, ambition, and enthusiasm will not be able to inspire youth. • In dealing with children all teachers should remember that a touch of human kindness will work wonders. • Do not be afraid to say “I don’t know.” Pupils like frankness and are hard to fool anyhow. • Whatever contributes to the happiness of children is worthwhile. • The undecided teacher has trouble with her pupils. All forceful people decide quickly. • The tendency of a child is to be about what you expect him to be. • Don’t judge a child by the kind of car his father drives. • When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece. • Accepting attention from high school boys is professional suicide for the young lady teacher. • There isn’t such a thing as a bad boy. There are many cases of misdirected energy. • There is nothing in all the world so important as children. • Be certain of discipline from the start. Once lost, it is very hard to regain. • Permit no backsliding—see that pupils live up to all school regulations. • Teaching is not telling or testing; it is guiding and helping others to get knowledge. • If your teaching is to be effective, it must be backed up by example. • Teachers should not domineer over students; they should lead, direct, and inspire them. Be more of a guide than a taskmaster. • Anticipate the situation; most disciplinary troubles arise through the lack of foresight on the part of the teacher. • Say what you have to say in as few words as possible. That is what Abraham Lincoln did, and the world remembers and repeats what he said. • If you can’t lead, you can’t teach. • It takes men and women of brilliant personality to hold the interest and attention of the restless youth of today. • You will be surprised after you hear the other side of the case. There are as many sides to the story as parties involved. • The building of character is the end of all education. • There is no general method of teaching every subject, everywhere, to all kinds of pupils. • Have a definite aim in everything you do in the classroom and never fail to ask the pupils the point of the lesson. • The children in your school are worth just as much as any in the world. • Teach the pupils how to use the dictionary. • If you must speak firmly, lower your voice. • It is a difficult art to say the right thing at the right time. • Remember that you are teaching children, not subjects. • Hold up lofty ideals to your pupils. • Sarcasm is usually a poor weapon in dealing with youth. • Recess and play are necessary for best work in school. • Always convince your pupils that you mean what you say. • Never slight the moral development of your pupils. • Lead your pupils to have a strong desire to master their lessons. • Every pupil should know what to read as well as how to read. • Every lesson you give should help your pupils to master the art of study. • Remember that training human beings is more impor-

tant than teaching certain subjects. • The wise teacher guides but does not repress. • There is no use in trying to create interest unless you have it yourself. • Look for the good in children and teach your pupils to do likewise. • The way to prevent crime is to teach virtue. • Always interpret the new in terms of the old. • Play no favorites. • Have one or two meaningful and inspiring mottoes on the blackboard. • Do not talk too much in the classroom. Give the pupils a chance to express their thoughts. • Teach your pupils by word and example. • Projects and problems should be used in every classroom. • Good manners are an essential part of a child’s education. • Be just and fear not. • Prove to the pupil that you wish to be considered a kind, sympathetic, and understanding friend. • Stress loyalty to the school and community. • Build up a desire not to be absent. • In all your schoolwork strive for pupil improvement. • Stress the fact that every one is about as happy as he wishes to be. • Stress—“Whatever you have to do is worth doing well.” • Stress—“The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes, but in liking what one does.” • Cultivate in your pupils a desire to do what is right. Right makes might. • Teach your pupils not to express their opinion on a matter unless they have all the facts. Build up an attitude against idle gossip. The intelligent man seeks all the facts and weighs them before he formulates his conclusion. • Teach the pupil the value and necessity of education. • Stress—“One cannot always be a hero, but one can always be a man.” • Cultivate in your pupils a desire to act decently and sensibly. • Accuracy should be stressed in every classroom. • The child should understand that there is no substitute for ambition and determination. • Perhaps you should request additional material or equipment. It isn’t economy for a teacher to waste her time plus the time of thirty pupils attempting to get results with insufficient teaching aids. It is economy to provide teachers and pupils with materials that will enable them to get maximum results with a minimum expenditure of time and effort. • Don’t be discouraged if you have some pupils who apparently learn nothing. • Most important of all—teachers should be human. • The successful teacher knows how to diagnose pupil difficulties and how to provide correct remedial treatment. • Do not forget the importance of systematic review. • Of what value is subject matter if the soul of the child is neglected? • Every child should have at least one school success per day. • The easiest thing to do with the dull pupil is to “flunk” him. The best thing to do is provide for him. Schools are not constructed to make all men equal. • The best teacher is the one who keeps the most pupils working up to maximum. • Whatever you teach should go through the intellect and reach the heart. • Do not permit overwhelming details to get in the way of training boys and girls for adequate living. • There isn’t such a thing as an undesirable child; he is a victim of undesirable conditions. • Develop in your pupils a desire to read good literature. They should know that the tings they read today assist in determining what they become tomorrow. • The school is run for the child about whom everything should center. Schools are not run to provide jobs for teachers. • Be careful not to nag. • If you can interest children, your discipline problems will diminish. • Show a willingness to help children and you will find many opportunities to be helpful. • Teach the very best you know how. Your pupils will appreciate you more if they know you are doing your very best. —CC— I have always been a supporter of school uniforms. Recently I ran across a news item written by a public school educator. It was very interesting. In all my years as a public school educator I have heard very little debate among my peers in favor of school uniforms. I also can’t recall when I’ve seen this issue addressed in the newspaper. Do we want to perpetuate fashions that separate our children into social and economic groups, therefore setting some up for ridicule? School should not be a fashion forum that continues to make the big name designers richer. Wearing school uniforms would ensure that everyone on the campus is a student. This could help keep drug dealers and others who harm our children off our school campuses. Our children could stand on more equal ground with others while pursuing their education. Surely, school uniforms would be less expensive than the designer clothes that we’ve been programmed and hounded to buy for our kids. It shouldn’t stop there. Underpaid school teachers could benefit from a less expensive wardrobe as well as other personnel. Uniforms don’t have to be the ugly plaid pinafores of yester-year that require dry cleaning. The local sports shops that outfit the sports teams could do T-shirts and sweat shirts at reasonable prices that can be worn with decent jeans. A lot of kids are wearing jeans and t-shirts to school these days anyway. I think educators, parents and children could put their heads together and come up with some ideas for affordable clothing. We put the kids in uniforms when they participate in sports, band and cheerleading. So what is wrong with uniforms for the general school population? Uniforms could help instill school spirit and unity among the students. They can be much less expensive than designer clothing that only some can afford. They can make our children safer. Maybe our letters to the editors, school administrators and school board members can get the ball rolling in the right direction. After all, these youths are our future. —CC— And for those of us whose hearing is not as great as it used to be, we can appreciate the following story . . . Paul Swets writes . . . It’s sometimes difficult to distinguish sounds. Case in point: The other day, I blew my nose. From another room, my wife yelled out, “What?!”

Threads of Life by Cleo Emerson LeVally

A few months ago, our pastor asked the congregation to read at least one chapter in the Bible each day. I do not remember what brought that on, but previously, I had read the entire Bible through twice and have read other books in the Bible at different times. I decided to read Psalms again. As I checked the book, I realized it is the longest book in the entire Bible. It has 150 chapters. So, I read a few chapters each morning. I just finished the 119th chapter, and I have a way to go. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. It has 22 sections of 8 verses

Reading Psalms

each for a total of 176 verses and the letters of the Greek alphabet head every chapter. The chapter has all 22 sections named. This is very different from any other book in the Bible. It is the only chapter in the Bible with names of the verses. I read the reason, at one time, but I could not find it today. H ere are some other interesting facts about the Book of Psalms. God or Lord is mentioned 22 times. All but 3 verses (84, 90, and 132) mention the Bible. Also, Psalm 119:8 is the middle of the entire Bible.

So many of the chapters have praise themes or subjects. As I began to read through the book, I realized so many of the chapters were so familiar to me, so that caused me to think

I had read it many times. Some of those chapters I could now still commit to memory, they were so familiar. Some of the things I mentioned earlier came back to me as I typed, and

I remembered when I had studied some of them. With this reading, I realized that there is so much in Psalms I had forgotten. I had just not studied it in this way before. It is worth getting back in it.

As Christians we have only one goal: to see Jesus. In light of that goal we must be making preparation. Make every effort to live in peace with all men. See to it that no bitter root grows up. The only way to really succeed at peace with men is peace with God. As Christians there are things we must avoid. Allowing the temporal to become more important than the eternal. The God of the universe is on our side. He can keep us going in the face of failure. The Christian must be reminded that the final celebration will be worth the effort. Maybe you don’t feel very victorious today. Truth be told, it was a struggle just to get up and come this morning. Perhaps you need a reminder that it’s not over yet. Make a move toward Jesus and He will meet you more than half way. He wants to renew you, encourage you and help you to get back in the race.

One Pharmacist’s View I was driving grandpa to Wister to see some of our kin. It was 1952 and, as was his habit, he was talking—talking about old times. “There weren’t any good roads then just a few wagon trails,” he was saying. “The meadows were endless and the tall grass everywhere. I remember being a part of a group of Deputy U. S. Marshalls preparing to cross a wide valley and they asked me climb up a pretty good sized tree to look for smoke. The day was windy and the grass was dry. If it caught fire while we were out in the middle, we might not be able to outrun the flames for the grass was up to our horse’s bellies.” I tried to visualize how the grasses and trees must have looked as I drove. W ill Armstrong was born in 1872 and lived a long colorful life as a peace officer, merchant and farmer. Like many peace officers of that era,

grandpa was often employed as a deputy U. S. Marshall for the Federal Court in Fort Smith—a famous fellow and judge named Parker. There are pictures in old copies of the newspaper in Wister of grandpa escorting a hapless criminal to the hanging tree there in Wister and another picture of the man dangling at the end of a rope. Grandpa explained to me the man was arrested by a posse at a fairly well-known place called “Horse Thief Springs” located on an old army road now called the Talimena Drive. Our state is full of history and a lot of it is right here. Out by Holdenville Lake is the Fort Holmes historical marker—right on the highway. Fort Holmes was named for its builder Lieutenant Theophilus Hunter Holmes, an officer in the First U. S. Dragoons under Col

Henry Dodge. The Fort was built at the confluences of the Little River and the South Canadian on the north side. In addition to the Fort, a man named Edwards built a large impressive store on this site. Edwards was married to Jesse Chisholm’s daughter—the man the famed trail was named after. E dwards Store was a good place to lay in supplies as it was the last store on the old army road which so many traveled on their way to western lands and the gold fields. By 1850 business was booming as travelers found the plentiful water and grass in the immediate area to be a great place to layover and rest. Some liked it so well they settled in and made a settlement on this side of the Canadian near the area of the artesian wells that are just south of the Francis turnoff—a place

out any training, would get into the pilot’s seat of a Boeing 747 and attempt to fly it? We wouldn’t give a single thought to doing so! It would be utterly ridiculous! But, we will enter into the marriage relationship thinking that love will solve all problems. Yet, the relationship of marriage, involving complex human emotions and behavior is much more complicated than flying a

jet plane. It is no wonder that so many marriages do not fly and crash in a few years. Beginning this Sunday morning, August 28th, at 10:45 AM, we will be giving lessons on “Happiness in Marriage” at the Allen Church of Christ and the public is invited. Let’s not be too proud to seek guidance from God and let’s do it before we crash the marriage plane!

Light from God’s Word Mark Legg Allen Church of Christ

Is love all that is needed for a marriage to be happy and lasting? Many young couples have married believing that their marriage would be successful because they said, “We love each other!” And, due to the love they felt for each other, they could not be convinced otherwise. One marriage counselor told one such couple that in spite of the love they professed for each other; their marriage would not last five years. They would not listen and vowed to prove the counselor wrong, and they did! Their marriage lasted almost six years! Certainly a marriage will not succeed without love. That is the first necessity! However, the problem is that many people do not know what love is or how to practice a life of love. Many married couples do not know what love really requires of them or what it means to love the other. They seem to think that happiness in marriage will occur automatically if they “love” each other. How many of us, with-

called Cold Springs. It’s impossible to speak of Fort Holmes without talking about the Dragoons. These units were special army units wearing extra-dressy wool uniforms staffed by men who knew how to ride and to strut at parade. Each unit was outfitted with special and expensive horses— all the same color. Each company would all be the same color of horses, such as black, whites and one of bays, sorrels and so forth. The Dragoons were a special organized group of companies formed to impress the plains Indians and the “Civilized” tribes who were here from their forced deportation from back east. As the soldiers rode along they were said to be a beautiful sight.

In 1834 the Dragoons made a special journey from Fort Gibson to the Kiowa and Wichita country 200 miles to the west— passing through the Allen (Cold Springs) area as they did. This area was already a favorite campsite of buffalo-hunting Indians such as the Osage. The Historical Marker out west of Allen takes note of their passage. This famous group of Army officers and their 400 best-dressed soldiers camping in what we now call Allen is a big piece of local history that happened right here. A lot of things have changed over the past 180 years but thankfully a lot of things remain the same. Be sure and go to church this Sunday. Wayne Bullard, DPh waynebullard@sbcglobal.net

Allen jumped out to a big lead with a seven run first inning. “I’ve been talking to our girls about coming out early.” Allen head coach Chad Colbert said. “That’s what we did today.” Kinsey Nix led off the with a hard hit to second base which Roff was unable to handle. “Kinsey started it with a really good hit up the middle,” Colbert said. TUPELO – The Stonewall Lady Longhorns ran their record to 5-0 on the young fast pitch softball season, defeating the Allen Lady Mustangs 6-1 Thursday at the Tupelo Invitational Tournament. Kai Watkins picked up the win going five strong innings on the mound. She scattered three hits to the Lady Mustangs and struck out four, while walking three. Abby Gaines took the loss for Allen. She also struck out four batters through five innings of work. Gaines gave up six runs, on six Stonewall hits and she walked four. “We hit some balls hard today that were just right at people,” Davis said. “That might have helped us scores some more runs, but overall I was pretty pleased with our hitting.” Macy Farris was 2-for3 from the plate with two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored for the Lady Longhorns. Clio Heath also had an RBI double, one of her two hits on the game and she scored two runs. Chelsea Wedlow drove in the lone Allen run on a single in the second inning. The Lady Mustangs dropped to 2-3 and on the season. “Chad (Colbert) is doing a good job with those girls,” Davis said. “They’re coming around and doing a lot of things right.”

ing Nix. Harrison reached second on a throwing error on Roff shortstop McKenzi Darnell. Faith Caldwell was next up for the Lady Mustangs doubling in Harrison for a 2-0 lead. Abby Gaines followed with a double of her own to plate Caldwell. The next two Allen hitters were retired bringing up Chelsea Wedlow with two out. Wedlow crushed the third double of the inning scoring Gaines. Stevi Caldwell followed with a walk. Emily Smith singled in Wedlow. Nix Batting for the second time in the inning hit an RBI single to score Caldwell. Harrison hit a hard single driving in Smith before Faith Caldwell grounded out to finally end the first. “Hits are contagious,” Colbert said. “We did a really good job of staying on top of the ball and driving it.” The monster first inning combined with a solid pitching performance by Harrison proved to be all Allen needed to cruise to the victory. Harrison allowed four runs on eight hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. “Sunzie pitched really well,” Colbert said. “She was hitting her spots. That’s what she does, she has three pitches and she spots everyone of them.”

Mustangs plan smash-mouth attack Coach Caldwell demands physical play for 2016 Mustang squad By HERMANBROWN Allen correspondent If you like video-game scoring and finess defense, the Allen Mustangs might not be your cup of tea in 2016. Coach Stephen Caldwell is not interested in Allen melting the scoreboard with triple-digit scoring and a complete absence of defense. Mustang Stadium won’t be confused with the Big 12 venues where teams score at a frantic rate. Allen head coach hopes to see his team grinding out time-consuming drives that end up in the opposing end zone. That’s the goal for Mustangs this season. If you like real football involving a smash-mouth attack, there’s a seat for you at every game. “We’ll be using a new offense,” the coach said. “We want to focus on ball control. We want to use our offense to move the ball and keep our defense off the field.” How about the razzledazzle trick plays? Don’t expect them from the latest edition of AHS football. Nor should you expect a track meet to break out with a bunch of sweep plays. “We are not going to try to run around people,” Coach Caldwell said. “We are going to try to run through them. That’s what we are - the type of football we want to play this year at Allen. We take pride in that.” The only stat the coach cares about is the points showing on the scoreboard at the end of the game. “A win is a win,” the Mustang boss said. “We aren’t concerned with the number of points scored only that we end up with more than our opponent. I don’t care if we win 7-6 or 8-6. That’s not how it’s been in 8-man football. But we want to change that. We want to be able to score 28 points and win the game.” A key to the lower scoring total will be the play of the Allen defensive unit. It will be the players on that side of the ball to keep the scoring down by the opponents. “We will put a lot of pressure on our defense,” Caldwell explained. “We’ll set a goal and they’ll be graded on whether they accomplish the goal. We want them to get at least two turnovers in every game. We also expect our defense to get us 14 points a game. That could be on a defensive touchdown. But it could also be by forcing a turnover and giving

our offense a short field to go score. If they happens and we score after the turnover, we’ll credit our defense with those points.” Coach Caldwell believes the 2016 defense “has the horses up front to control the line, the aggressive linebackers that will can hit people in the mouth (be very physical) and the defenders to cover the passing game.” With Game 1 looming, the Mustangs will try to display this new brand of football against the visiting Fox Foxes. To be sure, the talented opponent will test Allen in Friday’s showdown at Mustang Stadium. Coach Stephen Caldwell recently warned local fans of the challenge AHS will face in the opener. The Foxes were 11-1 last season but lost a bunch of front-line players to graduation. The means the Foxes are a rebuilding process. Even so, Fox is expected to be very good this season. “They are going to run the Jet Sweep because they always have,” Coach Caldwell said. “That’s going to be a great game - a great opener. It should be a very competitive game.” The key for Allen will be to get lined up correctly on defense and keep the speedy Foxes from getting around the corner and up the field. “We are going to do our best to keep them inside,” the head coach said. “They have some big guys up front and this will be a challenge for our front guys. But I believe our guys are up to the challenge. We are also challenging our linebackers and secondary to run these guys down!” Fans are in for a treat this weekend. Coach Caldwell has announced the players who will start or sharing playing time at positions on offense and defense. Heading into the opener, this is the depth chart for the Allen Mustangs in 2016: Quarterback Colten Frederick --Fullback Joe Howshar --Tailback Jackie Knighten Garret Wallace Shane Rinehart --Tight end Rush Black Chris Nelson --Tight end Hunter Simpson Jordan Stick --Center Mark Huitt (5-11, 245, Sr) In a related note, center Tanner Wofford suffered a knee injury last week and

is out of action. Coaches hope Tanner will be able to return to action in two to three weeks. --Right Guard Brett Mann (5-10, 185, Sr)* Michael Lindsey (511, 250, Sr) Left Guard Jake Linker (6-3, 265, Sr)* Michael Lindsey (511, 250, Sr) --DEFENSE Left Defensive End John Bailey* ---
