Post Office Damaged in Crash The Allen Post Office became a drive thru last Wednesday afternoon, when a lady drove her car into the wall on the north side of the front door. After stalling her car in the parking lot of the

post office Mrs. Susie Anderson restarted her car and accelerated quickly jumping the curb and hitting the building. The lady was noticed as being confused and unaware of

what had happened. She told bystanders that she was a diabetic and didn’t feel very well. When Allen police officer Derick Stewart arrived at the scene he visited with the lady and determined an ambulance should be called. When the paramedics arrived it was determined that her blood sugar level was dangerously low and they began

treatment on the woman. After treatment Mrs. Anderson was well enough to give the officer a statement and she and her car was transported home. Mrs. Anderson received a citation for an outdated tag and destruction of Federal

property. The Postmaster arrived at the location to help secure the facility. Repairs will be made in the near future. On a side note this is the third time the post office has been driving thru since it has been in its current location.

Controversial?

As most of our readers know the Republican National Convention is going on this week. It actually began Sunday with a church service. Pastor Jim Garlow preached and Gov. Mike Huckabee lent his musical skills during the service sponsored by the GOP and Pur Flix – a faith-based movie distributor. After the preaching, Republican delegates were treated to a viewing of “God’s Not Dead 2” – starring Melissa Joan Hart as a teacher who comes under fire for answering a student’s question about Jesus.

So it seemed reasonable for Pure Flix Entertainment to promote the DVD release of “God’s Not Dead 2” by renting a billboard in downtown Cleveland near the Republican National Convention site. The 32 feet by 60 feet sign would have featured Ms. Hart along with the following message: “I’d rather stand with God and be judged by the world than stand with the world and be judged by God.” That doesn’t sound all that controversial, does it? Well, it turns out the billboard company thought the sign was extremely controversial. Orange Barrel Media rejected the billboard advertisement because of the “judged by God” message, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. They said the message was “too political” and “way too incendiary,” according to emails obtained by Fox News. “The issue might be the title of the movie,” Orange Barrel wrote in one of several emails to Pure Flix. While the billboard promoting the Christian film was rejected, a billboard promoting atheism was permitted. Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsinbased group of perpetually offended atheists, agnostics and freethinkers, contracted with Clear Channel to promote their message. “It’s near the airport, right after the ‘Welcome to Cleveland’ sign,” FFRF spokesperson Annie Lau-

Devotion of the Week

Nicolaus Copernicus was the first astrologer to say that the sun was at the center of the universe. He has received great acclaim for that observation. He also said that “if the first button of your coat is buttoned wrong, all the rest will be out of place.” Same person, two dramatically different observations. However, few have ever head of his observation about buttoning a coat. “O God,” said David, “You are my God. Earnestly I seek You.” Much like buttoning a coat, if we begin a day earnestly seeking God, everything else will end up as it should. Each day we live is a new gift from God and a new adventure. It leads us on paths that we have never walked before and brings sights to our eyes and sounds to our ears that we have never experienced before. For every day to be God-honoring and Christ-exalting it is essential that we begin it with the Lord in prayer and in reading His Word. If we want Him to guide us and guard us and keep us from temptation, we must go to Him in faith, believing that He will protect us. “Earnestly seeking Him” means that our faith is not a past-time, part-time, some-time “thing” in our life. Copernicus, you will recall, recognized that the sun was the center of the universe and every planet revolved around it. If God is not at the center of our lives, we cannot expect peace and harmony, balance and control. He promised that “He will never leave us nor forsake us.” Unfortunately, it is us who leave and forsake Him. Seeds of Hope

Smile of the Week A frog called a psychic hotline and was told, “You’re going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.” Great!” the frog exclaimed. “Will I meet her at a party or something?” “No,” the psychic said. “Next semester in her biology class.”

rie Gaylor told The Hollywood Reporter. “The idea was that people flying into the convention couldn’t miss it.” Former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee told me he was astonished by the double standard. “It’s a miracle that God doesn’t take America and turn us into a burnt piece of toast,” he said. I believe Orange Barrel Media had a right to reject the message of “God’s Not Dead 2” -- just like I believe a baker or a florist has a right to reject business they might find offensive. But I’m rather astonished that anyone could believe the concept of God judging someone is “way too incendiary.” It seems to me the only ones being judgmental are the folks at Orange Barrel Media. They should really consider being a bit more open-minded. So there you have it, folks. God is not dead – but tolerance and diversity are on life support. Threads of Life ••• Old Magazines •••

by Cleo LeVally

I may be one of those people who cannot bear to trash anything because there is a possibility of using it in some project or saving it for a future use of maybe just because I like it. Recently, while trying to clear out one room to make some shelf space, I came across a stack of McCall’s Magazines, all with the dates in the 1960’s. My first thought was to find

one with a date of August, 1961. That is the month and year that my daughter, Phylece, was born. I thought what fun it would be to look back and read about some of the events that took place that year. Hours later, I was still reading through those magazines. The ads, the clothes and hairstyles all featured the VAMP LOOK. One ad read,

‘a sultry, slink, slightly wicked look we love for evening , colors are jet black or stark white.’ One dress was described as ‘an outrageously becoming swizzle-shirt dress with a skin-fitting black wool top above rows of taffeta ruffles.’ Can you visualize anyone today getting excited over an ad like that? Most of the furniture ads featured rooms in red, white and blue,or green, gray and blue. There was not a Victorian room in any of the ads. Louella Parsons was a featured columnist. She wrote about the movie stars most popular at the time. She wrote about the things they ate, where they slept, how much money they made and where the spent it. Turning the page, I found photos of Gary Cooper, Frank Sinatra with Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Lana Turner and her daughter, Cheryl; Marilyn Monroe with exhusband, Joe DiMaggio; also Doris Day and Ingrid Bergman. Those wee the stars of my movie going days. The medical news was most interesting. Check this out. In two major surgical operations, electrodes were placed on the patient’s temple and

a current of 700 cycles, 35 Millie-amperes, using 25 volts of electricity brought unconsciousness and freedom from pain. One operation lasted 45 minute, the other 39 minutes. Both patients awoke immediately after the op-

eration and did not have any dizziness or nausea. Does anyone remember those? I still have a few of those magazines around. They are hard to throw away. I may have another opportunity to read some of them.

One Pharmacist’s View I’ve written to my fellow married men in earlier articles about how to cope with life and the hard work that can fall on a man’s shoulders when his wife gets sick. But what does he do in case of sudden disabling accidents. It’s much the same drill. That’s why the caring husband will do all he can to help her to avoid accidents. But as we know, women can be careless. A caring man tries to stay tuned to what his wife is doing. For example, mine is now coping with injuries caused by her own slack. How, you ask? Our air conditioner coil located in our attic above the dining room has a drain in it to carry away condensate. My wife had failed to make sure the drain was open and working. Proverbs speaks of sloth but I digress. The condensate ruined the ceiling and parts of it fell onto the floor. Ordinarily a smart husband would

Doing without your wife!

find some high quality cardboard and tack it over the hole. But trying to please my wife I called Kerry Caldwell who with the expert precision of a man, promptly repaired the unsightly hole. All of this led up to what happened last Friday night. My wife was making her last rounds of the night to make sure our house was secure--as she should. Doors locked, lights out, temperature adjusted and all secure. But then, with careless abandon, she tripped over debris from the ongoing repairs. (see drain tube cleaning.) This costly and totally unnecessary accident was clearly her fault. It’s easy for even the compassionate husband to let the fatigue of the day take over and even criticize his fallen mate. But I didn’t. I told her this was a good learning experience for her and I

hoped she learned from it. We both had a laugh as she continued to grin through her knocked back bloody teeth and smashed lips as I reminded her that the expenses for the ceiling will come out of her personal household allowance. I don’t think she cared as she squanders most of it food and stuff. Now back to her accident. As a caring loving man I took my freshly maimed wife to Mercy ER in Ada (taking pains to see she didn’t bleed all over my new Lincoln) arriving about 11PM Friday. The doctor looked at her bloody face, pushed- back-teeth, heavily damaged upper lip and nose and put on a big act of concern. Softening me up for the big bill I guess They finally cleaned her up and I was ready to take her back to Allen when

this doctor guy came in and says: “I’m sorry you can’t go home. You have to go to OU medical in Oklahoma City by ambulance. You have a Subdural hematoma. “Ambulance?” “It sounds expensive,” I cried. But the doctor was insistent and hours later after driving all night, I found myself in a small uncomfortable room in the ER at OU in Oklahoma City. They called in brain doctors who nervously looked at scans and their rate books. That made me nervous but you know me, nothing but the best for my wife. After much patching and orders by the docs about “work” I was able to bring my injured loved one

home. Orders to contact expensive oral surgeons and restore her teeth brought us back to Ada and Dr. Boone’s offices. Booth said come in the morning and he would rearrange her mouth for 14.95. I asked if cash was OK.? He said yes and I said good, I’ll bring a 20. Oh. He meant $1,495.00. My wife smiled at me through her still busted lips and told me thanks again for being such a good husband. And well she should have. And you other compassionate husbands be sure and take good care of your wives. You’ll feel like me if you do, full of compassion and perhaps a little tear in your eye. And be sure and go to church Sunday. Wayne Bullard, DPh waynebullard@sbcglobal.net

Mark Legg Allen Church of Christ

Have you heard someone say, “I’m a Christian, but I’m not a member of any church?” Can a person be a follower of Jesus and not be a member of His church! Do you think Jesus will save us if we reject the church that He established? In Acts 2:47, we read that Jesus “added to the church (or “to them,” the believers) daily those who were being saved.” Since Jesus adds the saved to His church, if I have not been added to His church, I am not saved! Jesus died to purchase the church with his blood. (Acts 20:28) The Apostle Paul indicates that Jesus loves the church as a man loves his wife. He writes that Christ “loved the church and gave Himself for her that He might sanctify and cleanse her” and “present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” (Eph 5:25-27) Considering these truths, it is difficult to

Jesus even gave us a pattern for how to pray when He gave us what is known as the Lord’s Prayer. This pattern that He gave us is short and to the point. We are to be both consistent and persistent in our praying. Remember, too, that God inhabits our praises. Praise Him for who He is. Praise Him for what He does. Praise Him for what He has created. Making it a point to say short prayers of praise to God several times a day is one good way to walk closely with Him .
