Quote of the Week . . . Respect Your Elders. own.” My three sons swore they would never have offspring. In retaliation, I started a list of their misdeeds and told them that someday they will know what it is like to be on the receiving end. They protested that all their wrongdoings were accidents. But the list has been started. A s soon as the boys set up housekeeping, my husband, Jim, and I will knock calmly on the door. A 7.8 earthquake or a tornado will seem mild after Jim and I descend upon them with the list in hand. We’ll start screaming and arguing as soon as we enter the house, and it goes without saying that we’ll be wearing gummy, black baseball cleats. Not only will we make marks on the kitchen floor, but we’ll walk on the couch, too. After we flip on every light in the house, we’ll start at the top of the list. Clogging the toilet will be simple. There are several methods on the list to choose from. We can see if the Superman doll can overcome being flushed, or we can choose the more conventional manner and clog it with

paper bathroom cups (so they won’t know how many we’ve been using) or with a diaper or just three-fourths of a roll of toilet paper. Armed with crayons, we’ll draw pictures on the walls. I’m leaning toward a Picasso lookalike. Jim prefers pointillism. We’ll use red Magic Marker in the middle of the tan carpet – where the couch can’t be moved to hide it. Spills are a cinch. I’ll drop a jar of sweet pickles, one of honey, and another of apple juice on the kitchen floor. I’ll leave the top off the popcorn popper so kernels and oil splatter everywhere. In the living room, Jim will knock over three full cups of hot chocolate with half-melted miniature marshmallows. Jim and I have argued over the windows and have compromised, because we don’t want to send the boys to bankruptcy court. We’ll break only one window, but we’ll make sure it’s on the second floor. We’ve also compromised about jumping on the beds. I don’t mind the jumping, but I’m not going to hit my head on the window ledge and require stitches. We’ll put ketchup instead of blood on the bedspread. I’m not going to chop the bark off a redbud tree with a golf club, either. It doesn’t seem right to hurt a living thing for the sake of a list and a promise, and I’m going to explain that to the boys. Our redbud is still living, but it’s crippled and stands very lopsided. I couldn’t do that to a tree. But I will knock over a few plants. They always seem to survive a spilling, because they get new dirt in the clean-up process. I hope the boys have

screened-in porches. Jim gets the honor of knocking the screen door off the hinges (by accident, of course), since he always had to fix it. I’ll just poke holes in the screens with Popsicle sticks so that insects – especially wasps – can get in. Breaking a recliner will be a breeze. Jim and I will do that together so that one of us doesn’t get hurt. We’ll sit on the arms and talk, and we’ll put our weight on the headrest until the chair turns over. I imagine it will take several falls, but we’ll have plenty of time. Speaking of time, we’ll sneak into their bedrooms and set their alarms for 1:13 a.m. I never learned why they set our alarm for that special moment. That first night I thought I’d dreamed it. The second night I stayed up the next three hours wondering if it would go off again. I wonder how the boys will feel about being pushed into the swimming pool – fully clothed, shoes on, and billfolds in back pockets? T here’s something wonderful about boys. Parents who have a couple girls, even three, will have a different sort of life. For every girl, the mischief goes up linearly. With boys, the mischief is exponentially compounded. My list will grow as the years go by, but I really hate to use it against the boys. I’d rather my sons just had children of their own. —CC— O ur sons now have children and, as Dayna and I will tell anyone, “we would have never believed how much fun payback could be.”

Threads of Life by Cleo LeVally

I love this time of year. The past few days have been wonderful. In the Spring when temperature is like this, the wind blows almost every day. In the Winter the days are cold, windy or rainy. In Summer the days are hot and windy. Days like we have been having are just right; cool enough for a sweatshirt and you don’t need a jacket. So I love days like we have been having, they are so comfortable. I will take a lot of them and keep on believing that this is my favorite time of the year. When I was growing up on the farm, this was the time to go out in the woods with a burlap bag, find a hickory nut or black walnut tree and pick up nuts. When I had about all I could carry home, I would dump them out around the base of the big cottonwood

tree in our yard. On a pretty day, I would crack a pan full and take them into the house to pick out. Then on a winter or rainy day, we might put a skillet with sorghum molasses on the stove and make candy. We would then put in the nuts, pour it all out on waxed paper and let it cool enough to eat. I miss the fact that there are no hickory nut trees in Southern Oklahoma. I would love to be able to go out on a pretty fall day and pick up hickory nuts, or some of those big black walnuts, bring them home, crack them and then take them out on my deck and pick out the nuts. I often think of those days I spent on the farm growing up. I loved the days when I could go out with one of our dogs and just see what I could find.

••• Fall •••

Every season there was something different to do. My life then was so different from how the young people who are growing up today spend their time. In the summer we spent some days at the creek where there was a cable swing, a pond nearby where we swam and sometimes fished for crawdads.

We picked wild plums and climbed willow trees and rode them to the ground. In the fall we picked ‘possum grapes, persimmons, walnuts and pecans. In the winter, we followed Jack Rabbit tracks in the snow. My brothers had BB Guns and I learned to shoot with them, mostly at targets posted to a tree. I got to be a good shot. At

school carnivals, I could hit the bull’s eye closer than most of the boys because of learning to shoot at targets with my brothers. One year at a school carnival, I won a case of motor oil because I had the best shot that night. I was probably the only girl the boys and men had to compete with. I received a bit of teasing when I won that case of motor oil that night.

At a resent funeral of a man who died with only a few days warning, I was reminded that we are not in control of our own lives. The deceased had done everything he could to save his life. Doctors had treated him with the best and latest of treatment and medication, but nothing known to man could save him. His wife and family did not want him to die and did all they could to help him live. He had great plans for future days that he will never fulfill. His wife and family must now go on without him even though that was not what they desired. When we are young, it seems like our future is certain. We do not give much thought to dying. We are too busy living and enjoying life. For the most part, we are able to do what we want and fulfill our plans. We never stop to consider that our lives are not under our control. Perhaps, we should heed the words of the wise man, “Walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these

Mustangs need strong finissh to make playoffs By HERMAN BROWN

Allen correspondent The Allen Mustangs will need a strong finish to the 2015 football season in order to qualify for the playoffs. Coach Steven Caldwell’s Mustangs head into Week 8 with a record of 4-3 overall and more importantly 3-3 in District B-2 play. Only four B-2 teams will advance to post-season play in Week 11. It appears that Alex and Geary will lock up two of the spots. Both are 6-0 in league play with only three games to

go. T here are four other teams fighting each other for the two remaining playoff berths. Waurika and Cyril have the inside track at this point in the season with 4-2 records. If the season ended today, the district would be represented by Alex, Geary, Waurika and Cyril. Luckily for Allen, there is still time to dislodge Waurika or Cyril in the final standings. However, the Mustangs were beaten by Waurika - so the headto-head advantage belongs to the Eagles. Allen’s better odds for

The Allen Schools will be holding their traditional Fall Carnival on Thursday evening, October 29th, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. This year’s event is being sponsored by all junior high and high school classes and money raised will be divided between all classes. Activities being planned include a Haunted House, Dunk Tank, Trailer Jail, Cake Walk, Bingo, Game Room, Inflatables and, of course, food. Make plans to attend and support the class fundraisers.

post-season play is to beat Cyril when they meet on the final day of the regular season. That might earn the Mustangs a trip to Week 11. The other team right in the middle of this playoff hunt is Maysville. The Warriors share the same B-2 record with Allen at 3-3. The Mustangs will host Maysville this Friday in what could be considered a must-win situation for both teams. A victory by Coach Caldwell’s Mustang squad would likely eliminate the Warriors from advancing to the playoffs. Allen will play unbeaten Geary in Week 9. A win in that game would be GREAT for the Mustangs, but a loss would not end Allen’s post-season hopes. If Allen wins this Friday and in Week 10, the Mustangs have a much better chance of dancing into the playoffs in 2015. Last week, Allen entered the district showdown with a long list of missing

players. Quarterback Colton Frederick was unavailable and standout running back Colten Browning was limited to only three carries. Coach Caldwell inserted Rush Black at QB and called on freshman Garrett Wallis to carry the load at running back. B lack responded in a solid way. The Mustang signal-caller completed seven of 12 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once. Colten Browning gained 36 yards and a touchdown on three carries before exiting with an injury. Garrett Wallis stepped in and played like a champion. Wallis gained 145 yards and scored a touchdown on 10 carries. Christian Henry was the leading receiver. He had 97 yards and a touchdown on three catches. Maud opened the scoring with a pair of touchdowns in the initial quarter. The Tigers hit the scoreboard on Troxell’s 31-yard TD pass from Bodkin to make it 6-0. Maud added Eric Browning’s 5-yard scoring run. Troxell added a conversion pass from Browning to make it 14-0. In the second quarter, Allen fought back with Browning’s 7-yard TD run at the 9:06 mark. The conversion run failed, leaving Allen on the short side of 14-6. M aud responded with Thornton’s 1-yard TD run. Ryan Bowers chipped in the conversion run to make it 22-6.

A llen countered with Black’s 20-yard touchdown run at 5:45 to make it 22-12. Maud came back with A n d r e w B r o w n i n g ’s 8-yard scoring pass from Bodkin at the 3:05 mark. Thornton added the run to extend the lead to 30-12. After intermission, Maud used the third quarter to outscored the visitors two TDs to one. The Tigers back, Reid, ran the final 5 yards at 6:51. Browning then graded a pass from Bodkin to swell the lead to 38-12. Allen punched in a TD during the same period. Henry’s snared a 37-yard TD pass from Black at 5:57. Howshar followed with a conversion run to chop down the deficit to 38-20. Maud came right back with Reid’s 16-yard touchdown run at 4:45 to make it 44-20. I n the fourth quarter, Allen generated another touchdown. Browning’s 9-yard pass from Black came at 11:09 to make it 44-26. M aud countered with another Browning touchdown. The Tiger scored on a 2-yard run with 2:45 left in the game. Reid finished the MHS scoring with a conversion pass from Bodkin to make it 52-26 for the home team. A llen had one more score left in the game. Wallace bolted 42 yards into the end zone with 1:07 remaining. Howshar added a conversion pass from Black to seal the final score at 52-34. ---
