Town and County Partner on Alumni Building The Allen City council met for their regular meeting on Monday, November 3, 2014.

Present were Mike Todd, Dianna Brannan, Rhonda Skelton and Joy Anderson.

Board member Del Johnson was absent.

The claims and the minutes from the previous month

were approved. During the previous months meeting Kala Stephens was appointed as the City Clerk and during the November meeting her bond was approved and Kala performed the Oath of Office. .

The Board transferred

approximately $50,000 from the Court fund into the general fund. The Court fund is a culmination of traffic and other fines that are funneled through the Allen Municipal Court system.

Police Officer Dwayne McKinzie resigned from the force, and police chief Sanford is in the process of filling the position. Allen FCCLA Dominates at National Meeting

F a m i l y, C a r e e r a n d Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) brought more than 2,800 of its student leaders, members and advisers to Little Rock November 13th through

the 16th to participate in the largest of three regional conferences – known as National Cluster Meetings - being held around the country this month. Amery Dickerson, Taryn Wofford,

Hannah Heck, Charlea Leonard, and Grace Laden represented Allen High School FCCLA at this conference.

The meetings provided an opportunity for students and

advisers to come together for fun and to listen to inspiring speakers, as well as to expand leadership skills, sharpen talents and explore career pathways. The theme of this year’s conference

Rio Jones, a 2014 graduate of Allen High School, completed her basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, Naval Training & Command Center on November 14, 2014.

Now stationed at Dam Neck Naval Station near Virginia Beach, Virginia. She will begin schooling in her chosen field in December.

While at the conference, Allen FCCLA members participated in a variety of sessions and workshops. Taryn Wofford was selected to present a workshop at Cluster Meeting. She presented to over 200 members on ideas to Recognize, Recruit, and Retain members. She shared many of the ideas that have helped our local Allen FCCLA chapter have 111 local members!

Skill demonstration events were also held at the conference, featuring students participating in a wide variety of competitive activities. Events included several oratory and FCCLA-specific knowledge competitions, and demonstrations of college and career-ready skills in Family and Consumer Sciences. Grace Laden placed first in the Senior Level of the Skills Event: Science in FACS Challenge; Amery Dickerson placed 3rd in the Senior Level of the Skills Event: Speak out for FCCLA; Charlea Leonard placed 2nd in the Senior Level of the Skills Event: Early Childhood Challenge; and Hannah Heck placed 3rd in the Senior Level of the Skills Event: Early Childhood Challenge. The Skills Demonstration event winners who placed in the top 3 were recognized for their achievements on stage during the Closing Session of Cluster Meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Skills Events are very competitive and we are proud that all four of members who competed placed in the top 3 in the nation! We are also very proud of Taryn who has done a great job serving as a State Officer this year and who did a wonderful job presenting her workshop at Cluster Meeting. How many of you know that there was once a battle over Thanksgiving?

Last I checked, Thanksgiving is still scheduled to take place tomorrow. The economic news may be gloomy, but unlike President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression, President Barack Obama has not tinkered with the date of the holiday.

In 1939, FDR decided to move Thanksgiving Day forward by a week.

Rather than take place on its traditional date, the last Thursday of November, he decreed that the annual holiday would instead be celebrated a week earlier.

The reason was economic.

There were five Thursdays in November that year, which meant that Thanksgiving would fall on the 30th.

That left just 20 shopping days till Christmas. By moving the holiday up a week to Nov. 23, the president hoped to give the economy a lift by allowing shoppers more time to make their purchases and—so his theory went—spend more money.

Roosevelt made his decision in part on advice from Secretary of Commerce Harry Hopkins, who was in turn influenced

by Lew Hahn, general manager of the Retail Dry Goods Association. Hahn had warned Hopkins that the late Thanksgiving, Nov. 30, might have an “adverse effect” on the sale of “holiday goods.”

In an informal news con fe r e n c e i n A ugust announcing his decision, FDR offered a little tutorial on the history of the holiday.

Thanksgiving was not a national holiday, he noted, meaning that it was not set by federal law. According to custom, it was up to the president to pick the date every year.

It was not until 1863, when Abraham Lincoln ordered Thanksgiving to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November, that that date became generally accepted, Roosevelt explained. To make sure that reporters got his point, he added that there was nothing sacred about the date.

Nothing sacred?

Roosevelt might as well have commanded that roast beef henceforth would replace turkey as the star of the holiday meal, or that cranberries would be banned from the Thanksgiving table. The president badly misread public opinion. His announcement was frontpage news the next day, and the public outcry was swift and loud.

First to complain was Plymouth, Mass., home of the Pilgrims and location of the first Thanksgiving in 1621. “Plymouth and

Thanksgiving are almost synonymous,” intoned the chairman of the town’s board of selectmen, “and merchants or no merchants I can’t see any reason for changing it.”

College football coaches also objected. The United Press news service noted mildly that coaches would find the date change “a considerable headache.”

T he A ssociate d Pr e ss predicted that the Roosevelt plan would “kick up more clamor than a hot halfback running the wrong way.” By 1939 Thanksgiving football had become a national tradition. Many colleges ended their football seasons with Thanksgiving Day games, a custom that dated back to the 19th century.

In Democratic Arkansas, the football coach of Little Ouachita College threatened: “We’ll vote the Republican ticket if he interferes with our football.”

FDR’s proclamation of the date of Thanksgiving had the force of law only in the District of Columbia and the territories of Hawaii and Alaska. A few states mandated that Thanksgiving be marked on the date set by the president, but in most states governors issued pro forma ratifications of the date the president proclaimed.

N o w, h o w e v e r, t h e celebration became a political hot potato.

Governors had to read public opinion, examine the local business climate, consider political loyalties, and decide which date to select as the official Thanksgiving.

Do they stick with tradition and celebrate Thanksgiving on Nov. 30, or follow FDR’s lead and change the date to Nov. 23? It wasn’t long before people started referring to Nov. 30 as the “Republican Thanksgiving” and Nov.

23 as the “Democratic Thanksgiving” or “Franksgiving.”

Public sentiment ran heavily against Roosevelt’s plan. Ten days after the president’s announcement, Gallup published the results of a national poll finding that 62% of Americans surveyed disapproved of the date change. By the time November arrived, the 48 states were nearly evenly divided. Twentythree decided to stick with the old Thanksgiving, and 22 decided to adopt FDR’s date—Texas, Mississippi and Colorado said they would celebrate on both days.

For the next two years, Roosevelt continued to move up the date of Thanksgiving, and more states resigned themselves to celebrating early. By 1941, however, the facts turned against Roosevelt.

By then, retailers had two years of experience with the early Thanksgiving, and data were available regarding the 1939 and 1940 Christmas shopping seasons. In mid-March 1941, The Wall Street Journal reported the results of a survey done in New York City. The Journal’s headline put it succinctly: “Early Thanksgiving Not Worth Extra Turkey or Doll.” Only 37% of stores surveyed favored the early date. In Washington, the federal government reported that the early Thanksgiving resulted in no boost to retail sales.

And so, on May 20, 1941, FDR called a press conference at the White House and announced that he was changing Thanksgiving Day back to its traditional date. The early Thanksgiving had been an “experiment,” he said, and the experiment failed.

It was too late to move the 1941 Thanksgiving back to the traditional date, but in 1942 Thanksgiving would revert to the last Thursday of the month. This was “the first time any New Deal experiment was voluntarily abandoned,” a Washington Post columnist wrote.

Thankfully, there is a happy ending to this tale of Washington folly: On Dec. 26, 1941, Roosevelt

signed a joint resolution passed by Congress making Thanksgiving a national holiday and mandating that it be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.

I was on Facebook today and saw a picture of my niece and her husband who live in Oklahoma City, out walking in the snow.

It seemed to be a heavy snow, so much covered the

I go out for the morning paper, and there was snow on the ground. I agree, it was very light, and because I am not a kid anymore, I hope it is the only snow we will have this winter.

Facebook again. My daughter, Phylece, was in New York City this past week and she posted a lot of pictures of the area on Facebook. I have never been to New York City and I enjoyed seeing those pictures. During World War II we were stationed in Charleston, South Carolina and a couple of times we planned a trip to New York City, but something always interfered and we never did make the trip. It was on my ‘trip to see list’ all the time we lived there, but we did not make it. I enjoyed the scenes she sent. That is the closest I will ever get to making that trip.

I never had much of a yen to travel but there is one trip I am glad we made. On our first trip to Vienna to visit Phylece when she was stationed at the Embassy there, we booked our trip to Munich, Germany and

took the local train on to Vienna. By local train, it was one that made a stop in each city on the way, and we were able to see a lot of the local scenes there.

School was in session, and as we crossed the country, we observed recess time.

Students were out in on the playground, ice skating or on skis around the school.

That is something we won’t see much of in our part of the country.

Another thing we observed, in almost every back yard, there was a small house, like a vacation cabin.

We could not think why each of the homes would have these small houses in the back yard. When we arrived in Vienna, we asked about them, and were told that citizens could buy a small space and build a vacation cabin there. We were told that in this way, land could be sold to those who wanted to get out of the city and ski in the mountains in the winter, or visit the shore line around lakes in the summer. In other, these were vacation cabins for those who lived in the large

Melvin Clarence Priest passed away at his home on Sunday, November 16, 2014, at the age of 67 years.

Melvin was the son of Manuel and Billie (Walling) Priest, born on August 1, 1947, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. He was brought up and attended schools in the Non and Gerty area, graduating Gerty High School in 1965. He married Deborah Dooley in Non on August 30, 1968. They lived most of their married life in the Non and Ada areas, until retiring in the early 2000s. For the past twelve years they have enjoyed being at home on their farm north of Calvin.

Melvin attended Eastern Oklahoma State University at Wilburton. He worked as a farmer/rancher for most of his life, along with other occupations he enjoyed, including selling real estate and driving a transport truck hauling trailers. More than anything, he loved spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed watching their ball games. He was a member of Banner Baptist Church of Horntown.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Billie Priest; one great granddaughter, Kallie Harp; and one brother-in-law, Troy Dooley.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Deborah, of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Charla Priest of Madill, Greg and Bobbie Priest of Stonewall, and Mark and Amber Priest of Davis; ten grandchildren, Kristal Newberry (Jarrod) of Ada, Stephanie Vanderburg (A. J.) of Madill, Dakota Priest (Holly Butler) of Calvin, Dexter Priest (Reighna) of San Antonio, Texas, Maria Priest and Lane Priest, both of Stonewall, Damon Gregg, Kayla Priest, and Jayden Priest, all of Davis, Katelyn Harp (John) of Madill; ten great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Loretta Priest, and one sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Gary Abney, all of Ada; brothers and sisters-

Also in the mountains, we observed areas where all the trees had been cut down, and then next to that, was an area where trees were just sprouting. Then next was an area where the trees were about a foot tall, then next was an area where the trees were two or three feet taller, etc. We asked about this and were told that this is the way the lumber companies harvested the trees, and then replanted as they took out those old enough to use.

That way they always had the lumber available when needed.

It was very interesting to observe the different ways the climate would affect living conditions. It was interesting to see the difference living conditions were in a country that had snow most of the winter.

On the way back to catch our plane to the states, we booked a weekend at the U.S. Army barracks there and since it was Christmas week, were able to go downtown and see a lot of the way they observed Christmas. It seemed just like one big carnival. It was a good trip.

Funeral services for Holdenville resident, Oscar “O.B.” Boyd, 64, are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, November 21st, at the Texas Banner Church of God in Horntown’ Pastor Joe Lunsford will officiate assisted by David Wingo.

Serving as pallbearers will be Othor Ray Boyd, Greg Boyd, Kevin Nolen, Larry Langwell, Yates Adcock, and Shelton Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be Alvin Foster, Richard Rambo, Ricky Arthur, Brent Reavis, Harold Wheeler, David Wingo, David Carter, Harlton Beck and Bill Arthur.

O.B. passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2014 in Holdenville.

He was born on July 17, 1950 in Holdenville to Ruby Virginia (Swope) and Othor Vaden Boyd. He married Sandee Mantooth on April 7, 1994 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. He was a member of the Texas Banner Church of God. He owned and operated Boyds Septic Pumping for many years and worked as a soil conservation technician for the NRCS. O.B. worked as an Engineering Aide for the Hughes County Conservation District from 1986 to 1998, before starting with the Holdenville Field Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) where he has been employed for the last 15-years as the Soil Conservation Technician.

His parents,Othor Vaden Boyd and Ruby (Swope) Boyd, preceded O.B. in death as well as his brother Billy James Boyd and father-in-law Loyal Mantooth.

One Pharmacist’s View

My Aunt Bobbie Bullard—the one that lives out in California sent me an email containing a conundrum. I wasn’t sure at all what a conundrum was and was somewhat relieved after I looked the word up in the dictionary and found it described the following: “A logical postulation that evades resolution, an intricate and difficult problem often solved by a pun.” And let me assure you it has nothing to do with birth control.

This is a lengthy poem of sorts written for Veteran’s Day. Although the day has passed I will repeat a little of the poem or conundrum here.

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast, And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.

A Conundrum worth reading from Aunt Bobbi labors and sacrifices of our

Of a war that he once fought in and the deeds that he had done.

In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes every one.

And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors, his tales became a joke.

All his buddies listened quietly, for they knew where of he spoke.

But we’ll hear his tales no longer, for ol’ Joe has passed away.

And the world’s a little poorer, for a Veteran died today.

He won’t be mourned by many, just his children and his wife.

For he lived an ordinary, very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family, going quietly on

his way.

And the world won’t note his passing, ‘tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state.

While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories from the time that they were young.

But the passing of a Veteran goes unnoticed and unsung.

The punster goes on to describe differences in detail of the type of sendoff a politician receives and that of a veteran. Well, no one ever said that life was all that fair. But I do appreciate the efforts,

Does the sun stay in place and arise each morning without any help from God? What keeps the earth turning on its axes in perfect timing to provide our days and nights and the seasons of the year?

Let me suggest that if we haven’t seen God doing anything, it is because we are looking in the wrong place or blind to His activities of daily operation.

Maybe we do not see His actions because we are expecting Him to act in a certain way, according to our understanding, and so when He does not meet our expectations, we fail to see His activity. The inspired writer of Hebrews said that God sustains or “upholding all things by His powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:3) Jesus said that God “makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

(Matthew 5:45) Don’t we consider the daily operation of our world just a normal usual occurrence, “taking it for granted,” forgetting that it is accomplished by the power of God? God doesn’t have to perform what we might

call a miracle to be active!

He can and does works through the laws which He has established to govern and regulate the universe.

Do we live as if God has nothing to do with our lives? We may forget that it is God’s power that gives us life and sustains our lives. The inspired Apostle Paul preached, “He gives to all life, breath, and all things.” (Acts 17:25) If God was not active, we would not have life and our world would collapse.

The Psalmist wrote, “God reigns over the nations.”

(Psalms 47:8) Things do not happen without the knowledge of God. He governs our universe and works individually in our lives to save us. The Apostle Peter declared, “the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

(1 Peter 3:12)

Speaking of being thankful, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and in some ways I enjoy this holiday more than any other. It is a time we give thanks for our families, friends and country. We are indeed privileged to live in this great land and enjoy the freedoms we sometimes take for granted. Last Sunday night a good sized crowd of locals braved the snowflakes and slippery streets and gathered at Richmond Avenue Freewill Baptist Church for the Annual Thanksgiving Service. A thanksgiving

service included special music and a sermon by Buddy Drake. My favorite part may have been the part following the ceremonies where we all migrated to the Fellowship Hall for what Pastor Drake called “finger food.” Actually it was a sumptuous feast and a time of visiting and good times that reminds us why we live in a small town.

Thanks guys, it was great.

I hope you all enjoyed the pretty little snow we got Sunday and that all of you can find your way back to your church next Sunday.

Who knows? Maybe someone will recite a pun, or perhaps a conundrum.

Masonic Breakfast The Allen Masonic Lodge has begun holding their monthly breakfasts again and will be serving the meal on Saturday, December 6th, from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., at the Lodge on West Broadway. Jim, Candy and Melissa Johnson of Ada accompanied his mother, Margaret Johnson, to Shawnee this past week where she underwent shoulder surgery.

Since returning home, her sister Eula Tilley of Norman and friend Glenda Ferguson of Gerty have been taking good care of her.

—O&A— C indi Sanders has returned home following a 6-day trip to Madison, Wisconsin for a visit with her son and family, Shaun and Danielle Spencer, Eva, Lily and Claire.

While there they enjoyed seeing the city-sites and having coffee at Cresendo’s, and shopping at Trader Joe’s and other specialty shops.

Cindi cared for her three granddaughters when Danielle surprised Shaun with concert tickets to see James Taylor perform. The tickets were a gift for Shaun’s 40th birthday.

—O&A— Tammy Frederick, accompanied by daughter Jennifer Sanchez and sister Twila Randle, enjoyed time together as they traveled to Tennessee.

Their trip included stops at Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home in Memphis, and an overnight stay at the Peabody Hotel where Twila was made honorary “Duckmaster” as she herded the famous ducks to the fountain for their daily swim.

Then it was on to Crossville, Tennessee for a few days stay with Eric and Amber Sanchez. They returned

home Tuesday.

—O&A— Agnes Taylor was privileged to attend a music program put on by the ECU Department of Music where she heard her son, Monte Lane Taylor, perform.

—O&A— M ark and Robyn Legg were in Oklahoma City this week for the dedication of the Plaza Towers Elementary School memorial to the children who lost their lives in the May 20, 2013 tornado.

A granite slab was engraved for each child killed depicting what they loved in life. The Legg’s grandson, Christopher was among the children who died that day.

His memorial has a train, monkey and a logo for his favorite football team, the Eagles.

The Leggs had dinner with Joe Dorman and Joy Hoffmeister, friends of their son and candidates for governor and state school superintendent, and with their son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Dani Legg and Alexander.

They also spent time with their daughter Tammy and husband Scott Stephens and grandsons Tristan Wallace and Derek and Morissette Davis.

You may have noticed that the newspaper transferred the Atwood Baptists over to the Nazarene Church last week. They should have known that the Nazarenes would send us back by the end of the week!

We had a good crowd this Sunday, especially when you consider the uncertain weather conditions. We had ham, turkey, dressing and all the trimmings for the 3rd Sunday dinner. Everyone went home stuffed with stuffing and filled spiritually with a good sermon and the fellowship of friends.

Remember that the Atwood Community Christmas is scheduled for December 7 th beginning at 5:00 in the evening. Bring a potluck dish and join in the fun. Santa is planning to stop by during the evening, and I hear that he is even shopping for a new suit for the occasion.

We reluctantly forewent the usual special music this week and went right to the message. Rev. Karch’s sermon, “Be Grafted On,” was based in Romans 11:13-21.

Paul in trying to reach out to gentiles with the gospel, used examples of farming practices to illustrate his message.

Because the Jews as a people had rejected Jesus, gentiles have the opportunity to be grafted onto the main vine, Jesus. Since Christians are “grafted on”, they depend on Jesus for life and nourishment.

Without Jesus we can do nothing, but with him we can accomplish anything.

Abide in Jesus and He will do whatever you ask of Him. Jesus genuinely loves us. In fact, it is the kind of love that led Him to die so that we can live.

What is more, it is the kind of love that led Him to die for us before we loved Him. J esus loves the Father

and He kept His Father’s commandments. And Jesus loves us when we obey Him. What is His commandment? It is that we love one another.

Jesus said that He does not call us as servants.

He calls us as friends, and He tells us to bring forth fruit—the kind of fruit that comes from extending His love to others.

Lady Mustangs ready to state their case Allen girls set lofty goals for 2014-15 basketball campaign

By HERMAN BROWN Allen correspondent Allen High School Coach Jeremy Strong hopes to mold his 17-player Lady Mustang roster into a successful basketball squad in the 2014-15 campaign.

If all goes well, the Lady Mustangs will compete for the conference title and a deep run in the playoffs.

Those are two of the goals the veteran coach shares with his talented basketball team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have set some high goals for themselves, some very high team goals,â&#x20AC;?

Coach Strong said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are looking to take that next step and get to the state tournament. They have been close to the edge â&#x20AC;Ś and now they are ready to take that next step to get there.â&#x20AC;?

Allen will look to eight juniors to provide leadership

over the next few months.

The roster also includes six sophomores and three freshmen.

The eight juniors include Hannah Heck, Kennedy Prentice, Alison Sells, Charlea Leonard, Alycia Evans, Romana Barber, Brooke Holbrook and Emily Nelson.

The sophomores are Chelsea Wedlow, Faith Caldwell, Oke-Twâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Sha Roberts, Jailynn Porter, Caitlen Riddle and Abbey Gaines.

The three freshmen on the team are Hailey Masterson, Kyla Williams and Meysa Dohlman.

Coach Strong said most of the girls were involved in softball in recent weeks.

Only 3 of the 17 players were in the gym since the start of school. The others wrapped up the fast-pitch season before moving on
