the mortgage of the house is kept by the town of Allen for five years until all requirements are met by the home owner. Since the requirements weren’t met the ownership reverts to the town of Allen. Therefore the town must pay the back taxes on the property taxes in the amount of approximately $3,450. In further discussion it was decided to insure the house for a short amount of time while a decision is made on what to do with the property. During the guest section some of the members of the crowd discussed the stray dogs and unkept property in their areas. The Allen fire department discussed the usefulness of a 4x4 side-by-side to get into the more densely overgrown areas of a grass and pasture fire and the possibility of using the insurance money from the truck that was burnt in a recent fire. If the purchase is made they would request money from the fire tax money to buy a trailer for the unit. In the police report section Chief Sanford stated that officer Derek Stewart is performing well in CLEET and has 8 weeks remaining in the course. Rowsey awarded ECU’s Robert W. Sledge & H.Y. Benedict Fellowship at National Alpa Chi Convention Displays Research Abilities at Tri Beta Convention

East Central University senior Tyler Grant Rowsey has earned the Robert W. Sledge and H.Y. Benedict Fellowship, it was announced recently at the National Alpha Chi Convention in Alexandria, Virginia. Grant, a graduate of Allen High School, claimed the award after placing first at the convention for his presented paper on “Investigating the Mechanism of Action of a Novel Antifungal.” The $3,500 fellowship will apply toward Grant’s studies this fall at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Two fellowships, worth $3,500, were handed out at the convention while ten more, valued at $2,500, were presented. The Sledge Fellowship is named for Dr. Robert Sledge, who served on the National Council for 24 years, 1973-87 and 1989-99, and 12 of those as president. He also is author of the history of Alpha Chi’s first 75 years. The Benedict Fellowship honors Dr. Harry Benedict, the society’s first president. Grant, who majors in both biology and chemistry with a minor in mathematics, is part of ECU’s Presidential Leadership Program and is a part of the McNair Scholars Program. He was also the recipient of the Raniyah Ramadan Scholarship and presented work at the Fourth Annual Raniyah C. Ramadan Neuroscience Symposium on January 28. He is the son of Roger and Cheryl Rowsey, Allen. South Central Regional Tri Beta Convention Showing the successful ability in conducting research, Tyler was among a group of East Central University biology students honored at the recent Tri Beta South Central Regional Convention in Cedar Hills, Texas. There were a total of 180 students from about 30 colleges and universities from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Seven ECU students attended the event held at the Mount Lebanon Camp as four poster presentations and two oral presentations were made. “They were all wellreceived and they all showed how our students conduct great research at ECU,” said Dr. Charles Biles, ECU professor of biology.

COUNTRY COMMENTS Sunday is Mother’s Day and Art Linkletter once asked the children on his show how did their mom and dad meet and fall in love. Here are some of my favorites. *”My mom worked in a real estate office and dad was going to buy a bum house filled with termites. She tipped him off and he was so grateful he married her.” *”My dad was walking down this street and he fainted, and my mother came along and dragged him into a drugstore. So Dad said the only way he could pay her back was to drag her to the altar.” *”My dad was in the Navy and mom was always there when the ship came in, to help with the anchor or something.” *”My dad married my mom when her daddy told him there was a law and he ought to.” *My dad was a boss, and my mom worked for him. He kept chasing her around the desk until he finally caught her. And here I am.” *”My daddy was a lifeguard at this big swimming pool where my mom lost her swimming suit. I don’t know what happened then, but they got married.” My favorite of all was the following . . . Jimmy, how did your parents meet? “They were both poor, but my Mom owned a bathtub and she let my dad share it with her.” —CC— And as we prepare to honor Mothers here is one of my favorite stories. “Why are you crying?” he asked his mom.

“Because I’m a mother,” she told him. “I don’t understand,” he said. His mom just hugged him tightly and said, “You never will.” Later the boy asked his father why Mother seemed to cry for no reason. “All mothers cry for no reason,” was all his dad could say. The little boy grew up, still wondering why mothers cry, so he finally put in a call to God and when he got Him on the line, God said, “You see, Stan, when I made mothers, they had to be special. I made their shoulders strong enough to carry the weight of the world. I gave them the inner strength to endure childbirth and the rejection that eventually comes from their children. “I gave them a hardiness that allows them to keep going when everyone else gives up, and to take care of their families through sickness and fatigue without complaining. “I gave them the sensitivity to love their children under all circumstances, and no matter how badly they are hurt. This same sensitivity helps them to make a child’s

boo-boo feel better, and helps them share a son’s teen-age anxieties. “I gave them a tear to shed. It’s theirs exclusively to use whenever it’s needed. It’s their only weakness. It’s a tear for mankind.” —CC— Quote of the week . . . WHEN A BABY IS BORN, SO IS A MOTHER —CC— And last of all Alda Ellis wrote the following . . .

My Mother’s Hands, They Cradled Me The little white frame house on Harrison Street will always be forever blessed, for that is where my mother lived. Even though Mother is gone now, that house will always be filled with cherished memories, for I can still picture her there sweeping the walk every morning, planting pansies in the springtime, and enjoying peanut-butterand-jelly sandwich picnics with me on the back doorstep. In every room of that dear house, I feel her presence. The kitchen still glistens with the floors she always waxed so shiny. The hall bespeaks of her lover for family with the gallery of photographs she artistically arranged. And the bedroom, accented with her favorite shade of green, simply says “mama.” Sometimes I miss her until I ache. I wish I could again feel her kiss on my cheek. And I imagine back to one brisk, golden autumn morning some forty years ago when my daddy drove down an avenue lined with oak trees, proudly carrying his beloved wife and brand-new-baby daughter home from the hospital. It was upon looking through my mother’s cedar chest that I discovered just how ready my parents were to welcome their new baby home. The wicker bassinet trimmed with yards of lace had stood ready for weeks, fresh diapers had been neatly folded and stacked, and the baby announcement cards sat in a pile to be mailed out to family and friends. Mother and Daddy had been married ten years, and the nursery was filled with well-loved furniture that had long been in the family. They were so excited for their baby girl to be born. Some forty years later, Mother and I carefully removed from the cedar chest the baby clothes she couldn’t bear to part with—an elfin pair of handmade booties, a delicately cross-stitched bib, a rattle shaped like a bow, and a tiny patchwork quilt that had belonged to Mother when she was little. To my mother all of these things brought back her own memories, but to me they spoke of security, for they were precious reminders of all the love that went into each handmade stitch. The quilt, now a bit tattered and threadbare, was created not only to warm my body but also to warm my heart. Mother’s lullabies were sung to me as a melody of hope and love. Just to touch the soft baby quilt after all these years reminds me of the blessing of a mother’s touch. How miraculous a mother’s touch that warms us when we are cold, feeds us when we are hungry, comforts us when we are sick, and plays games with us to put joy in our souls. Wrapping me a warm quilt of love and devotion, my mother’s hands, they cradled me. The Allen AdvocATe

Devotion of the Week

Lo, there was a great earthquake, for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it; his appearance was as lightening and his clothes were as white as snow. For fear of him, the guards trembled and became as dead men. And the angel said to the women, “Be not afraid I know that you seek Jesus of Nazareth who was crucified. He is risen. He is not here. Why seek the living among the dead? Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful man and be crucified and on the third day rise again.’ Come now and see that place where He lay. (Then they remembered His words.)” “Go quickly and tell His disciples and Peter that He is risen from the dead, and lo, He goes before y ou into Galilee. There, you will see Him as He told you.” Some went away with fear and trembling and said nothing because they were afraid. Others went away quickly with fear and great joy and ran to tell the disciples. Seeds of Hope

Smile of the Week

For the second week in a row, my son and I were the only ones who showed up for his soccer team’s practice. Frustrated, I told him, “Please tell your coach that we keep coming for practice but no one is ever here.” My son rolled his eyes and said, “He’ll just tell me the same thing he did before.” “Which was?” “That practice is now on Wednesdays, not Tuesdays.” Postmaster send change of address to:

working many burglaries have been occurring in and around city limits. Pontotoc County was able to arrest two for stolen property and a meth lab right outside of city limits. Chief Sanford discussed the pros of officers carrying pepper guns ans a less lethal use of force. The guns are considered to be more effective than tasers and are cheaper. The cost of a pepper gun is around $400. The department is going to purchase one and make a decision on supplying all the officers with one. Also the department requested approval to purchase a body camera for filming interviews and cases where they could film crime scenes and confessions. It would be a useful tool for cases taken to the District Attorney. Municipal citations for April were: speeding – 18, DUS -1, animal at large 1, possession of marijuana 1, DWLR -1 , defective equipment – 2, harboring a vicious animal – 1, failure to wear seatbelt – 1, failure to obey a stop sign – 1 DISTRICT CITATIONS: Possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, altering a or changing a license plate, providing false information to a police officer, taxes due state. During old business the subject of clean up letter response was discussed. One property owner has hired someone to demolish the building; while two have promised action, with little progress. It was discussed the next step would be ticketing the property owners until the situation is resolved. A reminder to all property owners in this position, it is lawful to increase a fine daily until the cleanup has been performed. It is not the town of Allen’s goal to levy fines, however; after the order is totally ignored we will have not other action, so please take care of your property immediately. The police officers will be instructed to issue citations. In other action an architect has visited and made preliminary plans on renovating the old alumni building into a new nutrition site. Mr. Forest Neal came Monday and will be submitting his proposal to the town and County Commissioner Gary Starns to start to move on the project.

One Pharmacist’s View We’ve had a lot of rain the past 3 or 4 days. Five inches of the pure water from heaven. And while I had already said “enough” the rains came again. But we needed it. The years of drought had pulled down Oklahoma’s lakes and water tables. But now, area lakes are back to full, even some of the “nearly dry” such as Lake Canton or Lawtonka out by Lawton appear to be full to the brim. Parts of Allen now sound like “frog-hollow” as the frogs take over. And then there is this. I was brushing my teeth and minding my own business in my own bathroom but I felt I was being watched. I looked around and sure enough, a big fat toad was watching my every move. I captured and returned the frog to my very wet back yard wondering why I ever did enjoy carrying frogs around when I was a kid. This one gave me the creeps and I was glad to be shed of it. And I wondered how he got in. My rain gauge shows that we got over 5 inches of rain during this latest series of downpours. Did he walk, hop or swim in? Meanwhile, my faithful wife, Pat, came face to face with a serpent. He was lounging on the side-

It is so sad! Maybe it’s not the saddest statement in the Scriptures, but it’s definitely among the saddest! It is said of King Solomon that “his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to his God, as was the heart of his father David.” (1 Kings 11:4) I t seems incredible that a man like Solomon would not remain loyal to God. God heard his prayers and gave to him “wisdom and exceedingly great understanding and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore.” (1 Kings 4:29-30). God also gave to him riches, wealth and honor, such as never possessed by any king before or after him. Through his Godgiven wisdom, Solomon ruled over one the most powerful and glorious kingdoms ever known to man. How could such a sad thing happen? Answer: Something other than

walk by my back door but retreated when he saw her. I do that too, sometimes. I hope this “Garter” snake just stays out of the house. I know they are harmless but I can do without them in the house. Especially my bed. Once upon a time, when I was 7 years old, I was spending a few weeks with my grandparents, Ruby and J. T. Bullard down on Goat Ridge in Leflore County. A varmint had killed some of the chickens one night and my Uncle Jack set a trap and caught the chickenloving-coyote. While the chickens were happy about this as events developed, I wasn’t. Loose talk abounded about how traps angered coyotes making them attack whoever they could get revenge from. They were good at what they did such as seeking revenge. It was speculated by my Uncle and older brother Gerald that the angry coyote might rip off the screen door (which I was sleeping close to), dragging away and eating a child. That would be me. I was afraid, of course, and decided to change locations. I got in bed with Uncle Jack. As the new

moon flooded through the window I noticed movement. There was a hole in the screen where the lock had been picked in prior times and making its appearance was nothing less than a big black snake. It was a hot, “sweaty” night and the big snake slithered right across my Uncle Jack’s bare chest. Jack awoke and we both fled. We finally got a lamp lit. No electricity on Goat Ridge. The snake was long gone I suppose. I moved my bed to Grandma’s bedroom. J. T. wouldn’t let me sleep in their bed so I bunked on the floor. All was well, for a moment except for the cat incident. Well, I won’t go into that but just know that I drew very close to God that night so long ago. T hen there was this. Gerald and I were home in Centrahoma. A terrible cloud came up and we were all afraid. It contained a visible tornado and my scared mama crawled under the bed. I didn’t have to be coaxed to go with her. I felt there could be no good from this but there was. When it was over there were live fish flopping around in our

love for God took control of his heart! Love for his wives ruled his heart! It should not surprise us that God wants our heart. Whatever rules our heart, rules our actions and words. Life and death are decided by what is in our heart! It is no wonder that Jesus said that the greatest commandment was “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matt 22:37) Solomon should have

paid attention to his own writing, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) All of us need to follow the advice of King David to Israel when he said “set your heart and your soul to seek the Lord your God.” (1 Chron 22:19) And, let us do as did Ezra who prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it.” (Ezra 7:10)

yard. We didn’t question the science of it but my older brother Gerald recalls that after mom came out from under the bed, the fish were gathered up, and cleaned. We considered them our “Manna from Heaven.” I can’t remember but Gerald says

they were delicious. I hope you all have a good weekend and if we do have a tornado come that it just goes on over and this time, instead of fish, I hope it drops hundred dollar bills. It would be easier to explain. Be sure and go to church Sunday.

Mustangs end season with regional losses

By HERMAN BROWN Allen correspondent The Allen Mustangs saw their high school baseball season come to an end Monday afternoon in Wright City. Coach Steven Caldwell’s Mustangs played a total of four baseball games over the past week. AHS defeated the Broken Bow Savages 8-5 in the final non-playoff game of the season. The win came a week ago Monday at Allen High School.

On Thursday, Allen moved into the Class A regional baseball tournament. The Mustangs edged an exciting 7-6 win over the Porum Panthers. Allen played a second game on Thursday. However, the outcome was different as the Mustangs were beaten 5-1 by the Wright City LumberJax. Rain rolled in Friday and delayed the final regional game

Warden (the “Petitioner”), by and through Susie Bolin Summers of Mayhue, Summers & Files, PLLC, Attorneys for Petitioner, filed, in the District Court of Pontotoc County, an Amended Petition for Summary Administration, Appointment of Special Administrator, and Admission of Will to Probate (the “Amended Petition”). The Petitioner has alleged that Clifford Ray Rhodes, deceased (the “Decedent”), died testate on March 27, 2004, at the age of 67 years, domiciled in and residing in Jasper County, State of Missouri, and that the total value of the Decedent’s property in Oklahoma is $9,666.00. The names and addresses of the heirs or devisees of the Decedent are as follows: Michael Ray Rhodes Don Rhodes Greenpeace Fund, Inc. c/o Mayhue, Summers & Files, PLLC, Post Office Box 1488, Ada, OK 74821 Pursuant to the Order for Combined Notice, all creditors having claims against Clifford Ray Rhodes, deceased, are required to present the same with a description of all security interests and other collateral (if any) held by each creditor with respect to such claim, to Robert P. Notice is also hereby given that a hearing will be held on the 21st day of June, 2016, at 9:00 o’clock A.M. at the Pontotoc County Courthouse, Ada, Oklahoma. At the hearing the Court will decide whether to approve the Amended Petition for Summary Administration and Admission of Will to Probate and the Final Account and Petition for Determination of Heirs, Devisees and Legatees, and Distribution of the Petitioner. The Final Account and Petition for Determination of Heirs, Devisees and Legatees and Distribution will be filed herein on or before the 25th day of May, 2016. If you have no objections, you need not appear at the hearing or make any filings with the Court.
