BILL’S COLUMN I am one of the few that bought a BETA Video Recorder many years ago. I no longer have it but still the following news item was a little bit sad! In March, Sony will stop making Betamax tapes, 35 years after Beta lost the home video format war to VHS. But why was Sony still catering to the format? Turns out, Beta fanatics loved the tapes’ higher quality. Though the entertainment industry was skeptical of both formats, by 1989 they were making more money from home video sales than box-office receipts, thanks to rental businesses like Blockbuster. The last movie to be released on Beta? Mission Impossible in 1996. —CC— Speaking of changes . . . When the CD overtook the cassette tape as the music format of choice in 1991, most manufacturers switched over to making discs. But not National Audio Company. They bought up discarded cassette equipment, using it for replacement parts to keep their own elderly machines running smoothly. When tapes began to experience a music renaissance, NAC had a monopoly on the nostalgically cool format. The result: 2014 was their biggest year ever, with more than 10 million cassettes sold. Take that, eight-track. The good news is I still have a cassette recorder and plenty of tapes.

—CC— Not only are cassettes making a comeback but so are records! And I also have an abundant supply of them . . . “VINYL” is hot again. The name of the material used to make phonograph records—and a catchall term for the records themselves— is finding renewed popularity as record collecting gains hipster cachet. Now HBO is cashing in on the word’s retro appeal with its new dramatic series set in the record industry in the 1970s, appropriately titled “Vinyl.” The show, which made its debut last Sunday, stars Bobby Cannavale as the savvy but troubled head of the fictional record label American Century. While the title is a good fit for a nostalgic look back to the days when vinyl records were king, it took a while for the creators to settle on the name. In 2010, when news emerged that Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and showrunner Terence Winter were producing a series for

HBO, the working title had been “The Long Play,” Mr. Winter said. Then when the show went into development, it was known in-house as “Untitled Rock ‘N’ Roll Project.” Meanwhile, Showtime was considering its own series about the 1970s music scene, based on a script by Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg and titled—you guessed it— “Vinyl.” Showtime didn’t move forward with the 2011 project, and last year HBO announced that it would be using the title instead. According to Jeff Cusson, HBO’s senior vice president for corporate affairs, the selection of “Vinyl” as the series title had nothing to do with the similar Showtime project. The choice was simply based on “titles being tossed around for consideration,” Mr. Cusson told me by email. The fact that two cable networks hit upon “Vinyl” as a title goes to show how well the word has survived, despite the onslaught of digital and streaming music. It serves as a kind of emblem of musical authenticity from a bygone era. The word “vinyl” got its start back in the 1850s, when the German chemist Hermann Kolbe combined the Latin “vinum” meaning “wine” with the chemical suffix “-yl” to name a group of atoms derived from ethyl alcohol, found in wine. In 1872, another German chemist, Eugen Baumann, accidentally created a polymer known as “polyvinyl chloride,” which often got shortened to “vinyl” when it became a popular plastic material in the 20th century. In the record industry, vinyl took off after World War II with the advent of 33 1/3 rotations-per-minute LPs and 45 rpm singles and EPs. By the ‘60s and ‘70s, “vinyl” could refer to the record itself, following a semantic path established by words like “wax,” “shellac” and “acetate.” In the current vinyl revival, there are disputes about how to use the word. Many assert that if you use “vinyl” to refer to a record, the plural form should also be “vinyl.” There is even a website called “The Plural of Vinyl Is Vinyl,” and a recent petition on Change.org called “Please stop saying “vinyls” has garnered more than 1,000 supporters. University of Pennsylvania linguist Mark Liberman has called this “an invented ‘rule’ . . . without either tradition or logic

Devotion of the Week

A teacher asked her class, “What is the shape of the world?” A little boy answered, “My father says it is in terrible shape.” How true! What is the reason? There is a rebellion against the Lord and the law of the land. This revolt of evil is reported in the second Psalm. The kings of the earth plot against God and Jesus Christ. They wanted to break and Spiritual cords and get free from God. Today children have cast off their cords of restraint and no longer respect their parents. Citizens have cast of their cords of restraint and no longer respect policemen. Our homes have been turned into a jungle of robbery and rape, mugging and murder. We are witnessing an attempt of the godless to snap the cords of Divine control, but it will only bring down Divine contempt. Whatever you do, do not have the Lord against you, and if He is for you, it does not matter who is against you.

on its side,” but that hasn’t stopped some vinyl enthusiasts from insisting on it. —CC— Speaking of music I enjoyed the following story. After an impromptu song, our pastor asked the church pianist, “What key did I sing that in?” The pianist replied, “Most of them.”

Sunday was a special day. We welcomed five new members to our church fellowship. God is good and continues to increase his church with helpers. We are in a battle with the sin in the world, but we know that God will win. We need to be in prayer for our country and our political leaders of today. Sunday at 9:15 , we will be serving breakfast. We welcome anyone that would want to join us, even those that attend a different church. L ast Sunday Wayne and Sharon sang “ I Want to Stroll Over Heaven with You Someday.” for the special. A beautiful song with a wonderful message. B ro. Larry’s sermon was taken from Acts 2:42-47 and was entitled “The Importance of the Christian Community.” We as Christians are dedicated to becoming what God wants us to be. The Apostle’s teaching centered on declaring the Word of God. These men had been with Jesus. He had taught them for 3 years, pointed them

to the written Word, and lived the life that they were to pursue. We learn from the combined experience of others. We do well to listen, learn and follow. As Christians we devote ourselves to something bigger than life. It is too easy for us to live self-centered lives. It is supernatural to put others before ourselves. Generosity and selfgiving need to be a way of life for the Christian. A relationship with God is not something we leave to chance. It demands intentional liv-

ing. It requires us to consciously put God first. Our relationship with God becomes central to who we are. God calls us into a Community of Faith. We study the Word together, spend time together, pray together and praise God together. We see God at work in us individually. We see God at work in our Community and world. The political world has never had, nor never will, the Power that is at work in us!

Threads of Life ••• Visit to Calvin in the 1970’s •••

by Cleo LeVally I lived in Holdenville in the early 1970’s and worked for the school district as publicist. I wrote stories about special programs and activities of the school. I was still getting calls to do photography and went to The Holdenville Daily News and asked them if I could use their dark room occasionally. I met the editor and he asked me if I would like to write features for the paper. At the time, the peanut industry was big and he asked me if I would go to each town in the county that had a peanut processing plant and get their story. The day I went to Calvin

was a great day. First I went to the plant and met the foreman of the Peanut Company, Doyle Baldwin. For a photograph I asked him to sit on the great mound of peanuts in the warehouse and I climbed the rafters to the ceiling so I could get a good shot of him as he sorted through the peanuts stored there. At the time I thought it would be a great picture of me on those rafters, taking a photo of him. Oh, well, that would have been a great shot but it was lost in time. I got the story of the peanut plant and then drove

down town. I saw a service station with giant fish heads nailed on boards around the door to the station. I took a picture of the operator, O. O. Lowrimore and his catfish heads. He told me some good fish stories. Calvin has a river running just outside the town and I am sure there has been some great fishing in that river. A pickup pulled up and it had a bumper sticker that read Eat More Possum. The lady driver was a member of a family of Opossum hunters. We had a good visit. She told me about Adolph Jones, the oldest man in Calvin who was having a birthday party up the road. I went up there, did some visiting and got a good shot of him and the party. On Main Street I found my way to one of the grocery stores and I met the owners, John and Modean Ferren. She had grown up in Calvin and they had come back home recently. At another grocery store I found Jack Kuhlman. He had recently bought the former J. W. Hundley Grocery. His store had a meat market and also sold shoes, clothes, hardware, dry goods of all kinds, feed, rope, bridles,

western wear, appliances and you name it. He had recently moved to Calvin from Oklahoma City to get out of the school situation there. I could have spent a lot of time in that store. I met Gayle Dockrey, Mayor of Calvin, who was in the midst of a good domino game with the boys at the meeting room of the fire station. I was told that the RoundUp Club was having a

meeting nearby. Their members numbered one hundred and seven at that time and there was a large crowd of them there. The meeting was about organizing a riding club. I often think of the day I spent in Calvin. It was a busy Saturday and a haven for a nosy photographer who found it hard to pass up a story. Oh yes. On my way back to Holdenville I saw a sawmill and stopped to take a picture there. It was the only sawmill that I had ever seen and I have not seen one since.

One Pharmacist’s View Donald Trump has come a long way since the summer of 2015. He has amazed the world, not only with his popularity but how he is able to make many statements that were formerly thought to be no no’s. Let’s see now, what were they? He has busied himself ridiculing an American hero--John McCain. McCain, a war hero from a distinguished family was shot down over North Vietnam and held prisoner six years. He was a national hero. Did it ruin Trump to disparage McCain? Not at all. Trumps’ poll numbers went up. He then mocked a disabled reporter. Trump then applied misogynist humor. And as if that wasn’t enough he slandered the last Republican President and displayed vast ignorance on foreign policy. His ratings continued to climb. In a recent editorial in The Oklahoman, conservative writer Michael Gerson says Trump has been plain and forthright with his plans. He plans on building a wall. A magnificent and tall wall that will cross the continent and he will make Mexico pay for it. He would deport 11 million Hispanics that are already here. He would make Ford sorry they ever thought of moving their plant to Mexico and make it hard for them to ship any of their Fords out. He would send persecuted Syrian refugees back to Syria’s war zone and create a national Muslim registry. Not since 1933 has the world witnessed an ethnic style registry. Trumps style is defiance.

Trump & Trumpism. How do I vote?

His defiance of convention and political correctness seems to explain the strong support he enjoys from his supporters (and me, too). Supporters speak of how he is speaking “my language.” They say they are especially tired of political correctness with which the world is being smothered. Mainstream press treats Trump with rank disrespect, calling him a clown which has only solidified his supporters. One fan said, “We are voting with our middle finger this time. No more politics as usual. It’s a Burn, Baby, Burn campaign.” D oes the belief that Obama has messed up America justify Trump’s feeling that it’s now imperative to make drastic changes to America? To quote Mr. Gerson, “After all, there is much about America to conserve and save. We are a nation of civility and respect. We give our neighbors the benefit of the doubt. We stand up for the little guy. We are grateful for a flawed and wonderful country. And we know our flag stands for shared ideals, not someone’s idea of shared bloodlines.” So it appeals to us (me?) to go over and bomb the Middle East back into the stone ages, turning its deserts into radioactive talc. Well, none of us actually think it’s what we “really” ought to do--however appealing doing just that may be. And while building that big wall to keep Mexicans and other illegals out makes good political speech, it nags

at the American heart. America has a track record and we need to decide if that record of “goodness” is to be our destiny or our downfall. We’re just not really sure anymore. Are we really the same America that won the peace in WWII and then generously repaired, fed and healed

“Christianity is for weaklings!” “It’s for those who need a crutch!” If you believe this, you are right and I am weak! I am so weak that I can’t provide the oxygen I need to breathe! I can’t grow or produce the food I need! I can’t make the sun shine! If a tornado heads toward my house, I can’t prevent it! If my heart grows weak, I can’t keep it from stopping! And, if my heart stops, I have no means of saving my life! The wise man wrote, “No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit and no one has power in the day of death.” (Eccl 8:8) Yes, Christianity is for those who recognize they are weak and need God. If you do not need God, I congratulate you! You are stronger than me, but it seems to me that you do not have any more power over life or death than I do! Perhaps the differ-

the world (enemies and all) with our dollars and compassion? Or will our continued compassion for others spell our doom? We owe Trump our thanks for making our national survival a campaign issue. Do we follow our history of doing good? We are now arguing about im-

portant issues but it seems he wants us to vote with our middle fingers and I don’t think that’s a good idea.. We have a great nation and we need to take time out and consult with our founder. God. Have a good weekend and be sure and go to church Sunday. It’ s a good thing to do. Wayne Bullard, DPh waynebullard@sbcglobal.net

Light from God’s Word

ence in us is simply that I recognize my weakness while you do not want to admit yours. I need God because I do not know how to have a happy and prosperous life. I do not always know right from wrong or the purpose for which I exist. My wisdom and knowledge is so limited and inadequate. God’s word says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” (Prov. 14:12) Also, Jeremiah wrote, “O Lord, I know

the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” (Jer. 10:23) How hard it is to teach those who think they know all the answers and do not need any help; they will never seek the wisdom of God. Only the humble will learn God’s way. (Prov. 25:9) Jesus said, “whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” (Mark 10:15)

Atwood Baptist Church News THE ALLEN ADVOCATE, MARCH 3, 2016 -PAGE 9

Another sunny Sunday in Oklahoma! I’m beginning to think Atwood is the sister city of Garrison Keillor’s’s town of Lake Woebegone where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. The difference is that we have better weather. W hat is more, we’ve been receiving much needed rain during the work week and beautiful weather for the weekends. In fact, we may have to form up a Chamber of Commerce for Atwood so we can often just casually mention our Chamber of Commerce weather. Not bragging, just celebrating this winter’s weather blessings. We are so sorry to hear that Joyce Searcy has se-

verely burned her hand and won’t be able to play the piano for awhile. However, we were blessed that Linda and David Cranfield were here and that Linda was willing to fill in for Joyce this Sunday. James Hammonds sang “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” as the special music selection. One of the lines that stood out in the song was “Oh what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” What is it about human nature that causes us to take our problems to God last instead of first? Josiah Custer was our guest speaker this week. His text was James 1:2225, and he spoke about both hearing and doing the Word. If going to church has

become routine and we are just going through the motions, we might want to read the book of James. James tells us to keep setting our goals higher so that others begin to see more and more of Jesus when they look at us—and less and less of us. What if your lifestyle was focused on acting on what God says to do? We must first actually “hear” God’s word by hearing the preaching and teaching. We must also read and ponder God’s Word at home. When we understand what God is teaching us, we then seek guidance for how best to apply it to daily living. It is helpful to confess shortcomings and sins to an accountability partner and to pray for one another. G od cares about who you are now in Christ, not what you’ve done in the past. Guilt over confessed past sins or resting on past laurels is not helpful for walking with Jesus and

Mustangs end season on OT heartbreakAllen bounces Minco by 10 before falling to Wilson Eagles

By HERMAN BROWN Allen correspondent The Allen Mustangs were knocked from the Class 2A basketball playoffs last Friday. The end came on a heart-breaking 2-point overtime loss. Coach Greg Mills’ Mustangs had avoided elimination with a double-digit win on Thursday. However, the magic evaporated Friday in a playoff showdown that was forced into a four-minute extra session. No doubt, the 59-57 loss for the Mustangs was a difficult way to watch their season come to a close. Allen had opened the tournament Thursday with an impressive 69-59 win over the Minco Bulldogs. The Mustangs took control with a 22-11 lead in the first quarter. Minco tried to chip away at the double-digit deficit in the second and third quarters. The Bulldogs outscored AHS 15-13 in the second quarter to trail 35-26 at the mid-game break. Minco also edged the Mustangs in scoring in the third period, 13-11, to

close the deficit to only seven points at 46-39. With the game on the line, Coach Mills’ Mustangs outscored the Bulldogs 23-20 down the stretch. The effort pushed Allen to a double-figure win at 69-59. Josiah Jones erupted for 20 points to power the scoring attack. Two other Mustangs also came up big with doubledigit scoring performances. Christian Henry generated 14 points and Tommy Peay added another 10. The balanced attack also included Tadyn Walker with 8 points, Ty Brown with 7, Brendan McClure with 6 and Tucker Elliott with 4. Allen’s win over Minco pushed the Mustangs into a Friday elimination game . Allen faced the Wilson Eagles at Central High in Marlow. The Mustangs got caught up in a see-saw game over four quarters of regulation play. Allen led 9-7 in the first quarter before slipping behind 25-21 at the half. AHS came out in the third quarter and cut the deficit to only a point at 33-32 Allen then outscored the Eagles 19-18 in the fourth period to

Rules outlined for Wild Hog harvesting

The State Board of Agriculture on Tuesday approved proposed regulations pertaining to Feral Swine. The measure was approved by a 5-0 vote of the board during the regular March board meeting at the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF), 2800 N Lincoln Blvd. The purpose of these rules is to implement the provisions of the Feral Swine Control Act and to adopt aggressive measures for the eradication of all feral swine in the State of Oklahoma. Feral swine are a non-native invasive species to Oklahoma that detrimentally impact agricultural production and natural resources in Oklahoma. As feral swine populations increase, citizens of Oklahoma suffer damage to crops, livestock and wildlife habitat. Feral swine pose a health risk to humans, livestock, companion animals and native wildlife. The Department’s goal is to render the State of Oklahoma free of feral swine. The Department shall investigate and implement new population control methods, technologies, and toxicants as they become available to achieve this goal. The approved rules will now go to the state Legislature and Governor for review and approval. If approved by the Legislature and Governor, these rules will become effective in mid-September. Feral Swine Rule Summary 1. States purpose and goal. As new methods for eradication become available, no effort will be made to preserve feral swine or the accompanying industry. The Department’s goal is to render the State of Oklahoma free of feral swine. The Department shall investigate and implement new population control methods, technologies, and toxicants as they become available to achieve this goal. 2. Creates a moratorium on licensing of new feral swine hunting facilities. The previous moratorium beginning January 27, 2015 was Board order with an expiration date. 3. Creates a tracking system for transporters of feral hogs. Adds a $25 annual transport license for feral hog transporters. Previous license was free and lasted 5 years. There was a five year lag of who is really active in transportation and if someone was caught illegally transporting a phone call and a free license was the remedy. 4. Creates a 24 hour transport permit. If hauling a feral hog you must have a specific permit for each load identifying how many and where they are going. Currently, there is no enforcement tool for law enforcement to easily identify those who are illegally transporting swine. Our intent is to make these permits accessible by a smart phone app. Transporters can click their location, number of hogs, delivery point, and receive the permit number. This 24 hour permit is free and is only for tracking purposes and to give law enforcement personnel the ability to easily determine if the transporter is legally transporting the feral swine. 5. Requires feral swine hunting facilities to keep records on the number of feral swine entering and exiting the facilities and send them in monthly. This will validate and keep accurate information that is only estimated currently. 6. Creates a Feral Swine Free Zone – Prohibits feral swine facilities in the zone, prohibits any transport of feral swine into the Zone. 7. Adds a $25 Captive hog hunter fee – Feral Hog Hunt Facilities will charge and remit a $25 captive hunt fee to ODAFF that will be used for enforcement purposes. Funds raised with the fees in these rules will be used:
