THE ALLEN ADVOCATE, JANUARY 7, 2016 - PAGE 11

Well, I was back in church two Sundays ago, backslud at home last week because we had company, and then back in church this Sunday. I could have used the excuse that I had to get ready to watch the season premier of Downton Abbey on Sunday evening. But I resisted that line of thought, put dinner in the oven, and got ready for church.

By the time I was finally ready and had my Bible, purse, cough drops, and note paper, I was happily convinced that there wasn’t a reason in the world to stay home. Robert had gone over to the church earlier so after locating my keys, I dumped my things into the car seat and adjusted the steering wheel again because he had driven the car last. Just sayin’. Then I moved the seat back as far

ATTEST: Tammy Brown County Clerk (Published in The Allen Advocate on January 7, 2016)

as it would go, swung my walking boot encased foot into the car and moved the seat forward. Then I pressed the garage door opener. Nothing happened, absolutely nothing. The door didn’t budge an inch. Sometimes the Opposing Force even kills 9-volt batteries. I couldn’t just stay home; it took too long to get ready. There was nothing for it except to move the car seat back, swing my booted foot out the car door, and stump over to press the garage door opener on the wall. The door went up, and I stumped back over to the car, went through the boot swinging routine again, started the car, and backed out of the garage. Then it was struggle out of the car again, stump over to close the garage door and stump back to get into the car. Believe it or not, I pulled up in front of the church with a couple of minutes to spare! Yet another example of miracles in our day and time. It was certainly worth it all, though. Besides getting to greet friends and sing hymns with them

again, Tom Spillman sang “The Scarlet Purple Robe” as the special music selection. Of all the songs he sings, this is one of my very favorites. Besides Tom’s singing and the beautiful music, the lyrics paint a powerful image of Jesus’ amazing sacrificial love for us. Our guest speaker was Bro. Jalon Hopkins who spoke from Genesis 3:1-7. He said that there are 3 main belief systems. One is that Genesis is a myth and that people are born holy but may fall into sin later. The second belief is that humans are evolving both physically and morally. The third belief, known as the Federalist belief system and the one that Christians subscribe to, is that Adam was the head of the human race. When he chose to sin, his descendents were born into a sinful world and they too would be sinful. Satan’s best scams include deception or accusations, or both. He deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit, but Adam deliberately chose

We began the new year with breakfast in the fellowship hall. It is always good to enjoy the fellowship of friends. After Sunday School, two of our children, Kylee Taylor and Preston West, sang “Father Abraham”. We are studying about Abraham in our class. Our group sang an old song entitled “I Saw a Man.” A beautiful song with a good message. B ro. Larry’s sermon was taken from Philippians 3: 7-14 and entitled “We can only Move Forward.” In this passage Paul was taking a long

hard look at his past. He remembered a time when he was zealously doing what he thought was right. He now realized that he had made some serious mistakes. He realized that he had no power to change the past. Those who choose to dwell in the past have a difficult time in the present. Paul realized the failures of the past were not going to hold him back. For him, the most important thing in his life was to “know Christ.” Paul made a conscious decision to make his relationship with Christ his

to eat of the fruit. When non-believers are lured onto the road of sin, they will find that it leads to utter destruction. B elievers who get on the sin road will still have their salvation, but they will feel more and more separated from God. They look for ways to justify their sin, develop a false self-righteousness, and try to manipulate people. Lost people are unable to reach God. It is a bald statement, but we can’t find the solution to a problem until we understand what that problem is. To complicate things further, people who choose a life of sin try to hide from God so they choose darkness rather than light. Jesus is the only bridge we have to return to God, and we must trust that Jesus is the way, not the sin road to misery that we let Satan persuade us to choose. God is Sovereign. It is a poor choice to murmur against Him and then refuse to find salvation in Jesus. If we are wise, we let God’s Word direct us onto the road that leads to an eternity in heaven.

greatest priority. He realized that faith in Christ was the only way to righteousness. To be what he needed to be required a complete commitment to Christ. His face-to-face encounter with the risen Christ became the cornerstone of his life. P aul readily admitted that he was not a finished product. He concluded that to move on required him to “forget” the past. He also recognized that the reality of his future might full of struggle. It is in those times that one must dig deep into the resources of God and keep going. He discovered God’s desire for all of us is to “win the prize” of heaven.
