Naughty or Nice? Santa here Saturday

Area children need to have their list ready this Saturday, December 12th, when they visit Santa in downtown Allen. Since there won’t be snow for the reindeer to pull the sleigh, the Jolly Ole Man will arrive by fire truck at 2:00 p.m. and visit with children inside the Allen Nutrition Site. Following his visit with the children the Allen Chamber of Commerce’s “Shop at Home” drawing will be held in front of the Allen Food Center. Prizes this year will include a 50” TV, two KindleFires, and a Nikon camera. Also to be given, and donated by the Allen Food Center, is a $100 Meat Pack.

Three file for Allen school board seat

Voters in the Allen School District will have a decision to make when they go to the poll on Tuesday, February 9th. As of press-time Wednesday three individuals had filed for Seat #1 on the local Board of Education. Filing remained open until 5:00 p.m. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the total votes cast in this election, the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will meet in a Runoff Election on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. Seeking to remain in the position is the incumbent, Jeff Maloy. He is being challenged by Jamie Rinehart and Charlie Beavers. Also, as of press-time, word was received of the candidates filing for the two open positions on the Calvin Board of Education. Filing for Seat #1 was Jodie Dunn; filing for Seat #4 was Luke Kuhlman. Since both are Ledger Smith and the Allen first grade classes of Stacy Laden and running unopposed, Calvin will not be holding an elec- Kaci Johnson performed their YMCA little dribbler routine during the Allen / New Lima game last Friday. tion.

Gerty Christmas Saturday

The annual Gerty Christmas dinner and Santa’s visit will be held this Saturday, December 12th, in the Community Center. The dinner will begin at 6:00 with the community fund furnishing the meat, drinks, plates and silverware. Those attending are asked to bring side dishes and desserts. Following the meal, a visit from Santa is expected and he will be distributing gifts to the local children.

Awaiting Santa is hard but these youngsters did enjoy a visit with him at the Atwood Christmas Party last Sunday evening. shipping. Christmas has become a collective excuse for consumption, as if the best way to celebrate the spirit of the season is to rack up credit-card debt buying stuff for others. The implicit assumption is that happiness can be gift-wrapped. Here’s the problem: Material things can give us jolts of pleasure, but that pleasure isn’t rooted in the thing itself. As a result, we end up squandering Christmas looking for joy in all the wrong places. Consider a new experiment led by the Oxford University researchers Mengfei Huang and Andrew Parker. They were interested in the different neurological reactions triggered by a genuine Rembrandt portrait and a fake one, painted by one of his pupils. Though the canvases might look similar, real Rembrandts are worth about 100 times more. We pay such different prices for these paintings because we assume that there is something special about an authentic Rembrandt, that the Old Master filled his art with discernible flourishes. Though we might not be able to identify these minor differences, we think we can still appreciate them, which is why we hang Rembrandts in the finest museums and consign his imitators to the basement. We sense great art! But that’s not what the researchers found. When their subjects were shown real and fake paintings while being monitored in a brain scanner, there was no detectable difference in their sensory reaction. The masterpiece didn’t excite the visual cortex any more than the knockoff did. The scientists did locate a pattern of brain activity, however, that appeared whenever subjects thought a painting was authentic. There was a spike in activity in the orbitofrontal cortex, a chunk of brain just behind the eyes that’s often associated with perceptions of reward and pleasure. What’s interesting is that this area responded just as robustly when the stamp of authenticity was applied to a fake. This principle doesn’t just apply to art. In a 2009 experiment, Caltech scientists gave people in brain scanners a range of California Cabernets, priced from $5 to $90. Not surprisingly, the subjects consistently reported that the more expensive wines tasted better. Here’s the catch: the scientists had reshuffled the labels, so that subjects were sometimes given a $90 bottle filled with cheap jug wine. But the pleasure areas of the brain responded solely to the perceived price. A fancy label can make even the cheapest plonk taste great. Similar results have been achieved with shoes, tequila and jewelry. In study after study, the actual products seem to matter less than our superficial beliefs about them. Does this mean that the only gifts worth giving are those plastered with prestigious logos? Quite the opposite. The real moral of this research is that even the most wonderful things in the world— and what’s more wonderful than Rembrandt and fine wine?—aren’t wonderful for purely material reasons. Instead, the joy and beauty we find in these objects

depend on all those feelings and beliefs we bring to them, infusing the lifeless possessions with the life of mind. It really is the thought that counts. Given this psychological reality, we should reassess our holiday priorities, spending less time shopping and more time with the people we’re shopping for. As the Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman observes, “It is only a slight exaggeration to say that happiness is the experience of spending time with people you love and who love you.” So put down those presents—you’re missing the best part. —CC— The best part of our Christmases has been getting together with all the family. There was never a time, up until their deaths, that I didn’t spend Christmas with my parents. Many times the gifts were scarce but the joy was abundant. As the kids grow older some are unable to come home for Christmas and others just have things they would rather do. However when there is a vacant chair at the table there is sadness in the hearts of Mom and Dad. Edgar Guest talked about that sadness in the following poem . . .

One Pharmacist’s View It is said that we are all a product of our upbringing and that seems to be holding steady and true regarding our president. Barak Obama is said to have been born in Hawaii. His father was a Kenyan and his mother an American. Some of his school years were spent going to a Muslim school in Indonesia. Critics say this “school” was more of a radical indoctrination event. Later, young Obama attended a Catholic school. Just how much this all affected his outlook and likes and dislikes is unknowable but is worth remembering. For sure, he is more sympathetic to Muslims as a result of his growing up experience than say an Oklahoma farmer would be during these hectic

times. Americans have a lot on their plate this Christmas season. An election is coming up with all sorts of candidates appearing daily on their TV screens and newspapers. What are they looking for? Last week’s events in San Bernardino were a rude awakening for many Americans. Now (finally) tagged as an act of “terror” by the FBI and the President, the shootings led by Tashfeen Malik and her husband Syed Farook shocked the world. And why not? Farook is an American citizen (from Pakistan originally) with a college degree, a good paying government job who was living the

Have You Earned Your Place In Heaven? After donating a whopping $50 million to a gun control effort and because of his work against obesity and smoking, former New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg was quoted as saying: “I am telling you, if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in...I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.” H ow does that sound to you? Presumptuous? Arrogant? The very idea that Mr. Bloomberg could think he could “buy” his way into heaven must be offensive to God. However, is it less offensive when we believe and act like we can earn our way into heaven by going to church each Sunday? Or, by reading our Bibles daily? Or, giving generously to the church? Or, helping the poor? Or, being a good father, mother, husband, wife, son, or daughter. The list could go on and on. Do we, along with Mr. Bloomberg need to be reminded that after doing all we could possibly do, we are still unprofitable servants (Luke 17:10)?

Hillary’s blasé attitude in her failure to address present National Security concerns regarding Islamic terrorism. Heck. She can’t even say the word. Be sure and go to church Sunday and don’t forget to pray for our country. Wayne Bullard, DPh waynebullard@sbcglobal.net

Holdenville General Hospital has been chosen by SRHT to assist in Value Based Health Care With the support of the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), Rural Health Innovations (RHI), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Rural Health Resource Center, is excited to announce that Holdenville General Hospital of Holdenville, Oklahoma has been chosen to be supported through the Small Rural Hospital Transition (SRHT) Project. The SRHT Project is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) FORHP through a contract to RHI. The purpose of the SRHT Project is to provide onsite technical assistance (TA) to support small rural hospitals in bridging the gaps between the current volume-based health care system and the newly emerging value-based system of health care delivery and payment. Participating hospitals must reside in persistent poverty areas of the U.S. The top eight ranked hospitals were selected based on program eligibility requirements, organizational readiness, leadership and commitment to implementing consultant best practice recommendations that improve performance, as well as strategies that assist providers in transitioning to a value-based system. RHI received 27 applications from 15 states. The scoring and ranking process revealed a competitive pool of candidates. Congratulations to Holdenville General Hospital for this accomplishment! For more information on the SRHT Project, visit the website at https://www. ruralcenter.org/rhi/srht.

Pontotoc Co selects emergency notification provider

Telephone-based mass notifications systems are used by thousands of public safety agencies across America to warn citizens about local emergencies, hazards and other threats. Residents of Pontotoc County can now rely on HyperReach to provide the potentially life-saving capability. Service in Pontotoc County is fully operational now, according to Chad Letellier, director of Emergency Management for Pontotoc County. The new emergency alert system will provide rapid notification of hazardous and urgent situations using a mix of telephone calls, text and email messages, said Letellier. The service is also available for the hearing impaired. In addition, Hyper-Reach provides Pontotoc County residents access to the Wireless Emergency Alert system developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). A free smartphone app for iPhones and Android devices allows users to display and organize messages for specific addresses that are important to them, Letellier announced. “Our job is to protect the citizens of Pontotoc County as effectively and cost-effectively as possible,” said Letellier. “We reviewed many of the major vendors for emergency notification service, and Hyper-Reach gave us everything we needed for what we believe will be the best price. We’re really excited about this new capability.” Hyper-Reach is a state-of-the-art mass emergency notification system designed specifically for public safety. The system sends thousands of telephone calls, text messages and emails to geographically targeted households in seconds. A new feature sends broadcast messages to most current mobile telephones in an affected area. Additionally, Hyper-Reach Anywhere is a smartphone app allowing people monitor their home, office and other addresses they care about. Pontotoc County plans to use the service primarily for alerts about weather and environmental hazards, criminal activity and missing persons. Landline phones are automatically enrolled, but mobile phones are only included when citizens enroll. Pontotoc County residents are encouraged to enroll by going to the countyspecific enrollment page at the following link: http:// www.hyper-reach.com/okpontotocsignup.html “We’re honored to have been selected by Pontotoc County to provide its emergency alerts,” said Sam Asher, president of Hyper-Reach. “It’s gratifying to be part of an effort to save lives and protect property and we take that responsibility very seriously.” About Pontotoc County Office of Emergency Management The Pontotoc County Office of Emergency Management was established a decade ago with a mission to protect the citizens of Pontotoc County. Under the direction of Letellier, the office operates the county emergency operations center, provides coordination and support to all emergency agencies of the county, provides communications support, logistical support, emergency planning for the county, and other coordination and support functions. About Hyper-Reach Hyper-Reach (www.hyper-reach.com) is a mass notification system with more than 12 years experience in emergency messaging. Hyper-Reach sends messages via automated telephone calls, text messaging, email, and social media, such as Twitter. Other uses of HyperReach include Amber alerts, toxic chemical warnings, and active shooter alerts. In addition to 911 centers, Hyper-Reach is used by law enforcement, educational institutions and corporations. For more information about Hyper-Reach, go to www.hyper-reach.com or call 855-266-8439 (855 2-Notify).

and neglect had led to the downfall of the nation. They had simply forgotten who they were and what they were to be. Most had been taken captive, their cities and lands plundered and lost. Jeremiah pleads with God’s people to call upon him. In the middle of all this desperation and loss optimism would be difficult. Yet, in the middle of all this comes the Word of God to His people: “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Could it be that God is waiting today to hear once again from His people. How in tune with God would you say America is today? What could happen if we once again turned to Him with all our hearts? Jeremiah delivers God’s promise for a better future. God promises to release His people from captivity. We can be held

captive by our greed, lust, selfishness, indifference, and lack of godliness. They had forgotten God and were suffering the consequences. They had brought the judgment of God upon themselves. Jeremiah points God’s people to Christ. Even in those days the light of

Grace was beginning to dawn. He proclaimed it to the people. Christmas is a time to remember the great gift that God gave for our salvation: Jesus. By Him we are saved, sanctified, healed and restored. Let us call upon Him as never before. May this season be our reminder!
