Bobby Jones, one of the world’s all-time great golfers, began playing golf at the age of five. At twelve, he was the town’s best golfer. But he had a terrible temper. When he was fourteen, he entered the National Amateur Tournament and lost. His Grandpa Bart said to him, “You’re good enough to win. But you will never win until you control your temper.” Years later, after winning tournament after tournament, a reporter was talking to Grandpa Bart about Bobby. During the interview Grandpa said, “Bobby was fourteen when he mastered golf. But he was twenty-one when he mastered himself.” It is a tragedy when we allow our tempers to control us instead of God controlling our tempers. His power is available to us when we surrender our hearts and lives to Him and ask for His Spirit to live within us. If we do not master our tempers, our tempers will master us. God’s Word warns us to “Stop being mean- bad-tempered and angry.” Seeds of Hope

The waitress at the diner greeted me with a cup of coffee. I was about to take a sip when I noticed pink lipstick on its edge, so I reached across the table for another cup. That, too, had lipstick on it. “Excuse me,” I said to the waitress, pointing to the stains. “Oh!” she said. “Those stupid white cups!” Postmaster send change of address to:

Whether you’re working on a large excavation or simply planting a tree in your yard, natural gas and utility line safety should always be job one—and that starts with calling 8-1-1 to have your utility lines marked. By doing so, you can be certain where your electric, gas, water and other important lines are located as well as avoid causing serious injuries, service interruptions or possibly costly fines for damaged infrastructure. Make the call. It’s easy, and free. Respect the lines. Dig with care. After all, safety is in your hands… but always on our mind.

This message was intercepted by United States Secret Service. On March 1st, German Foreign Minister Auther Zimmeerman sent a message to Mexico proposing an alliance against the United States. When the contents of the intercepted message were revealed, Americans were outraged. On April 2 President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a declaration of war on Germany. That was the day the United States entered World War 1. Sometime in November 2009, I was working at the Healdton Oil Museum. A friend Lee Thompson came into the Museum with articles about the ship. She had found a newspaper postcard with a picture of a ship that operated out of a New York Harbor and she went to the Internet to do research regarding the incident. She was curious about how a ship that operated out

leading oil companies of that day. As a result of Lee’s research on this, she received the following letter from Auke Visser (correct spelling) in Holland. “Hello, Lee, thanks for visiting my site and your mail. Also thank you for the nice photo of the ship named Healdton. I will put her on the site. You are right; the vessel was manned after an oil field. It was the custom of Standard Oil to rename tankers with the names of oil production fields. Also some of the Standard ships were named after Presidents of the company and also directors of the board. For instance the tankers of the Lago Oil Co. were all names of oil fields in Venezuela. All of this information is on file at the Healdton Oil Museum. Come by for a visit and call me for a tour. My name is on the door of the Museum.

I made copies of her information, also blew up the photo of the postcard and with writing on the back of the card. The card had no date or the town where it was mailed from but mentioned that the writer would write more after he leaves Copenhazen (that is the way the name of the city is spelled on the card). She also brought several news stories that she had researched regarding the United States declaration of War, following the incident. I made copies and they are now on display at the Oil Museum. She kept researching in order to try to find out how the ship was named after an oil field in Oklahoma. She also purchased a book though the Internet entitled The Coast Guard in Word War 1, An Untold from Page 2 Story. The story of the SS Healdton is the lead story. are. One Pharmacist’s View These last few days reminded me of some Oklahoma history. History that not only reminds me of the horrific bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal building and the mass loss of life that sad moment on an April day a long time ago. In addition to the April bombing, Mike Morgan, weatherman for KFOR4 TV in Oklahoma City brought to our attention the memory of Woodward. He was up there doing a weather show for the school kids and mentioned the horrific twister that ripped through that town on April 9, 1947. It was on a Wednesday night and the theatre in Woodward called “The Woodward” was full of customers. There was no

Remembering Woodward and little Joan Gay

TV back then and not much of any kind of weather warning. No one knew much about tornadoes nor how to forecast warnings. Tornados were a mystery defined by old Indians and misleading legends. When the word flashed to Stonewall that evening I was a 12 year old at work in the Main Theatre in Stonewall selling popcorn. Business was good but the news of the tornado in Woodward and the wild rumors that followed caused a little panic in downtown Stonewall. Parents raced to the downtown area which was busy that spring night. Stonewalls bars were open and busy as was Burnett’s

Drug Store. People were enjoying their evening before the panic started. No wonder. The truth was just about as bad as the rumors. The monster storm, starting out in Pampa, Texas, swept through Canadian before wiping out the little county seat town of Higgins. 51 people died that scary night in Higgins, Texas. The wild twister, now said to be 2 miles wide and racing 40 miles an hour, drew a bead on the city of Woodward. Like Stonewall, Woodward residents were enjoying its recreation downtown. Those not in the stores, the movie or drug stores were at prayer meetings in the

destruction. Jesus forbid following the majority and said they were going the wrong way. “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matt 7:13-14) Considering Jesus’ words, Christians should not try to follow the way believed right by most people. In religious matters, the things believed by most people are probable in error and destructive. Rather than our faith being in the words or teaching of the major-

ity of men, we must rely solely upon the word of God. Regardless of the massive number of people who may follow a belief, the large following does not prove it to be correct or pleasing to God. On the other hand, a small number of followers does not mean it is error. Today, Jesus would be considered an extremist. He was opposed and crucified by the majority of religious leaders who considered themselves to be the people of God. I’m happy to be rejected and considered an extremist by the majority. Jesus said, “Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so did their fathers to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:26)

Light from God’s Word

Mark Legg Recent headlines have spoken of the dangers of extremism. Can a Christian be an extremist? Extremism is defined as “belief in and support for ideas that are very far from what most people (The majority) consider correct or reasonable.” Whatever is believed and practiced by most people is usually correct, isn’t it? Don’t we want to be accepted and loved by most people? Yes, we do, but following the majority can lead to eternal

various churches. There was little to no warning as the giant funnel wiped out and removed over 100 city blocks, killing 107 unsuspecting citizens. Rumors that the storm was headed for Stonewall from KADA radio quickly emptied out our movie and downtown as residents hurried to storm cellars. But no tornadoes hit Stonewall that scary night. The mean storm had already killed a total of 187 and injured 970 leaving the Woodward court house in tattered ruins. One 4 year old girl injured in Woodward was named Joan Gay. The twister killed her mom and seriously injured her Dad. Little Joan was taken to the Woodward Hospital. It was what happened there the next night that triggered a lot stories and speculation. Two men in Khaki walked into the damaged hospital, picked little Joan up and carried her out. This girl was never heard from again. No one knows to this day what happened to her. Robert Lee, a reporter for the Oklahoman did

stories on her and then in 1993 the TV show, “Unsolved Mysteries” did a program about this disturbing incident. But nothing was heard about little Joan. Was that it? The end? Not actually. Six more years passed and on May 2, 1999 reporter Lee got an email. It was from a woman who identified herself as Joan Gay. She agreed to communicate with Robert Lee and tell all. She said that she had established contact with her dad, who was still living. The person never wrote again and the email address was terminated. He couldn’t find a trace of little Joan as memories of her continued to sink into the dark abyss of time. Joan Gay was was 4 in 1947 would be 73 now What happened to this little girl remains a mystery. And if you are 73 years old, and female and don’t know who you are, you need to check in. I imagine some people up in Woodward would like to know what happened. I know I would. Drop me an email. And all of you be sure and go to church Sunday. Wayne Bullard, DPh waynebullard@sbcglobal.net

Mustangs to host district tourney today Allen launches post-season action Thursday against Dewar Dragons and Maud Tigers

By HERMAN BROWN Allen correspondent T h e A l l e n Mustangs will begin the Class A baseball playoffs this weekend. Coach Steven Caldwell’s Mustangs are scheduled to host the Dewar Dragons and Maud Tigers in a 3-team district tournament at the Allen High School baseball diamond. If the field is dry the tourney will begin at n o o n o n T h u r s d a y. Maud and Dewar will battle the Mustangs for the district crown. The teams will continue to play until two of the three district teams have lost two games. The surviving team will be crowned the district champion and will advance to next week’s regional tournament. Last week, Allen faced the Stonewall Longhorns on Tuesday afternoon. The Mustangs rode a 2-hit shutout pitching performance by Tucker Elliott to secure a hardfought 1-0 victory. Elliott pitched 7 innings of near-flawless baseball. Besides the 2 hits, the Mustang hurler gave up a pair of walks. Elliott mowed down eight Longhorn batters onstrikeouts. Allen was led at the plate by Josiah Jones, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. He also scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The only other hit for AHS was a single by Tadyn Walker. Allen was 3-for-21 at the plate - but Elliott’s

masterpiece on the mound allowed the Mustangs to walk away with the 1-0 win. On Thursday, Allen moved on to Roff to play in the Roff baseball tournament. The Mustangs played another exciting onerun game, but ended up on the short side of a 3-2 loss to the Tupelo Tigers. To m m y P e a y w a s the hard-luck loser despite 6 innings of great pitching. Peay allowed 3 run on only 1 hit and 4 walks. He recorded 6 strikeouts during the game. Allen slipped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Tupelo countered with a run in the bottom of the first inning and added two more tallies in the second inning. Neither team scored again for the remainder of the game. The Mustangs outhit Tupelo 4-1 but couldn’t convert the hits into more scoring. Colton Frederick was 1-for-2, scored once and walked twice. The other three hits c a m e f r o m To m m y Peay, Tanner Wo ff o r d a n d D r e w Back. Rush Black walked once and scored on an RBI by Josiah Jones. Later Thursday, Allen suffered an 8-1 loss to the Coleman Wildcats in the Roff tournamnent. The Mustangs struggled offensively, going 1-for22 at the plate. Aaron Dockrey broke up the no-hitter with a single for AHS. Colton Frederick was credited

He allowed 4 run on 4 hits and 2 walks while recording 7 strikeouts. Allen opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Rattan rallied with three runs in the top of the third inning for a 3-1 advantage. However, the Mustangs countered with three runs in the bottom of the same inning to move ahead 4-3. and Dena Wood headed north across the Red River and meandered through the towns to Allen OK and to visit with Mark and Aola (Crumb) Parker who had sold Dena a dozen laying hens to go with the twenty she already had. Dena reports it being fun watching Mark and Jim transfer them from one cage to the other in the back of their van. (Not fun for Mark and Jim however.) The ladies sat inside with Zoe while Mark and Jim sat on the porch in rockers and they talked fast and furious. The friends always have so much to say when they see each other and it really isn’t that often. But they seem to be able to pick up right where they left off. They also stopped in and visited with Carolyn Henderson. Dena says she love her hometown friends as well as their infrequent visits here. And also thankful to the Allen Past and Present face book page to stay connected. And that she knows there are many others who feel the same

Atwood Baptist Church News

Right from the start, Sunday was like the Country song titled “Sunday Morning Comin’ Down.” And several gallons of it were in the process of turning our driveway into a swimming pool. By church time, it was even raining too hard for us to sing “Showers of Blessing.” At any rate, we were thankful for the precip. We’ve seen years when it was so dry that, if it weren’t for what the neighbors would think, a good shower would have had us all out in our yards dancing in the rain. Movie night is just around the corner. On Saturday April 23rd at 6:00 P.M. “War Room” will be showing at our church fellowship hall. Supper will be served as well, and everyone is invited to come enjoy a good meal and a great movie. James Hammonds and Tom Spillman sang “Mansion Just over the Hilltop”as the special music selection this Sunday. It is one of those beautiful old songs that sets your toe to tapping and puts your mind on heaven. I enjoyed the sign at the Nazarene Church this week telling people to come to church early on Sunday so they could get a good seat on the back row. I have a feeling that one might have been borrowed from the Baptist book! David McMahan brought a message based on Joshua 24:14-23 this Sunday. In this passage Joshua tells the Children of Israel to fear the Lord and to worship Him in sincerity and truth. He said they must choose whether to serve God or the various gods they had worshiped in the past. Joshua then declared boldly that he and his family would serve the Lord. The Children of Israel then shouted that they, too, were choosing to serve God. Christians should consider the cost before they make their profession of faith. God’s way is not on the same level with the way other religions worship. God gave instructions in the Old Testament books of the Law regarding the form of worship that He expected of the Jews. Jesus completely fulfilled those laws, and today we can worship God through the Holy Spirit. God wants our worship and our praise. One reason Christians make a public profession of faith is so that the people who know them will keep them accountable. Joshua set up a large stone to bear witness to the day the people of Israel declared that they had chosen to serve God. Today, the church altar serves the same purpose. .If we follow Jesus, He will make our burden light. However, toexperience this blessing, we must trust him daily and throw off the things we need to rid ourselves of, because these are the things that interfere with our choice to sincerely serve and worship God.
