Snow Days Converted to 6 Days Out of school

AHS senior Jesse Huckeby attended the 2016 Prom with Alexis Lambert

The results of the bond election was one of the first items of discussion at the Monday evening meeting of the Allen Board of Education. Talk about needed changes to the proposal and requesting input from the community were the main conclusions. A survey will be sent to those individuals that votes to gather opinions. Present at the meeting were the five board members, Robert Hammonds, Jeff Maloy, Cindy Davis, Chad Goodson and Frayne Black. Also in attendance were the administrators, Supt. Bob Gragg, Principal Michael James, and Dean of Students Greg Mills, board secretary Brenda Robertson, and guest Jami Rinehart. Administrative reports included updates on the softball field; roofing of the football grandstand; FEMA reimbursement for damages; cafeteria improvements; and fire alarm installations. The Prom was held this past weekend and was a huge success. The event was held in the cafeteria followed by an after-prom party in the old gym. End of year testing is underway and going well; three young ladies qualified at the FCCLA State Convention and will make the trip to the National Convention in San Diego, California in July; and softball and baseball districts have been announced. The Lady Mustangs will travel to Soper to play at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20th. Allen will be hosting districts in baseball with Dewar and Maud coming to town. Pre-K enrollment was held April 5th; students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades enjoyed an Easter fieldtrip to the Ada movie theater to watch the movie “Zootopia”; and the kindergarten class had an egg hunt at the Wintersmith Park, Ada, and lunch at Burger King. The maintenance report showed the softball lighting project is completed on the main field; the scoreboard will need to be rewired. Terry Johnson and crew are nearly finished with the grandstand roof, and the stands have been sprayed for termites. Work on the grandstand bleachers will begin soon; and all areas on campus have been sprayed and mowed. Approval was given to the consent agenda which included minutes of the March meetings, the treasurer’s report, activity fund report, Temporary Appropriations for fiscal year 2016-17, application for a summer Driver’s Education class (class size limit is 25 with tuition of $100), and renewal of vendor service contracts with Occupational Therapy Solutions and East Central Oklahoma On-Line Consortium. Moving on to action items, the board declared a list of items as surplus and these items will be sold via an internet auction called bigiron.com. These items include two buses, a Kubota tractor, a Lincwelder, golf cart, overhead heaters, outside cameras, electric cookstove, tires and outdoor rugs. Changes were made to the school calendar, giving the six set-aside snow days back in the form of days off. Plans are to dismiss school on April 15th, 22nd and 29th, and May 13, 18th and 19th. Graduation ceremony will remain on Saturday, May 21st, at 10:00 a.m. Decisions approved following executive session included acceptance of one resignation, securing three substitute teachers, and moving a part-time support employee to full time. The meeting adjourned at approximately 11:15 p.m.

Wayne Bullard’s column is my favorite part of the

newspaper. Last week’s column on friends was one of my all time favorites. He was so right about Virgil and Jackie Guy. They are two of the finest Christians I have ever known. It has been over thirty years ago since we bought the Advocate from them. Their help and assistance didn’t end after the sale. They stayed with us much longer than they should have because they knew we needed the help. Dayna and I will never forget their kindness and

we consider them very dear friends. Without Virgil and Jackie, Wayne and Pat Bullard and Charles and Betty Speir I don’t know how we would have ever survived. If you have not bought Wayne’s book One Pharmacist’s View you should do so. It is great, in fact I have read it twice. I hope he will write a sequel in the near future. —CC— How sad is it that laws must be passed to keep perverts out of public restrooms? N orth Carolina, on Wednesday, became the Lic# PM001011

first state to enact legislation restricting access to sexsegregated facilities on the basis of sex assigned at birth, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. At least 13 other states are considering similar bills, according to the nonpartisan group. A broad new law there requires transgender people to use the public bathroom corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate, a rebuke of a move by the state’s largest city and the latest skirmish in the “Bathroom battles” popping up in statehouses and city halls. Republican leaders, including Gov. McCrory, a former Charlotte mayor, said they were trying to protect children from confusing and potentially predatory situations. All Americans should appreciate the governors who have stood up for the rights of Christians, including Gov. Scott of Florida, Gov. Pence of Indiana, Gov. Brownback of Kansas, Gov. Bryant of Mississippi, Gov. Abbott of Texas, and our own Gov. Fallin. The homosexual and lesbian lobby groups have intimidated politicians and businesses trying to force their perversions down the throats of all Americans. Businesses such as Coca-Cola, Delta Air Line, Walt Disney Co. Apple, Facebook, Bank of America, the NFL and the NCAA have joined the lesbian, homosexual and transgender activists in opposing legislation that would protect Christian clergy and churches and Christian schools. The businesses and politicians that have spit in the eye of Christians do not deserve our support . . . and they will not get mine. —CC— Brian Sussman shared his opinion on the “bathroom battle.”

The Outhouse Edition Each summer when I was a youngster in the 1960’s I visited my grandparents in northern Minnesota. They were humble farmers who still had a working outhouse. Yes they had indoor plumbing (installed about 1960), but I guess old habits died hard: despite the times, the outhouse remained. I recall it was a single-stall unit The Allen AdvocATe

Devotion of the Week

“The heavens proclaim the glory of God!” Do they really? When the writer looks into the heavens does he really believe that He can see God? Does he see an outline of God in a constellation? Are there stars shining somewhere that actually point to God’s eternal residence? No. This Psalm, more than any other, reflects the beauty, splendor and handiwork of God. He is speaking of the revelation of God in the world of nature. His belief in God as Creator is not an argument against the theory of evolution or the problems of science and the Bible. For him, Creation reveals the Lord’s royal majesty, sovereignty, power and design. He simply declares God’s existence and presence and wants to praise Him in worship and wonder. We see God’s glory each morning when we are awakened by a majestic sunrise that erupts from the darkness of the night. We see His handiwork each time we look into the face of a rose, watch a bird in flight or see the crashing of waves. All of creation clearly and convincingly announces the greatness and glory of God. This Psalm reveals a God who communicates to us through the majesty of His creation. The fact that He speaks openly to us through the work of His hands is a gracious expression of His love and His desire for us to know and worship Him. Although sin has attempted to hide His glory it is still with us and cannot be denied!

with a simple wooden bench and a round hole with a mysterious dark pit beneath. Since there was only one bathroom in Grandma and Grandpa’s house, at some point everyone used that singlestall outhouse. Perhaps the leaders of my city, San Francisco, are becoming nostalgic for the good old days? I say this because their latest brainstorm is to demand that businesses and city buildings employ singlestall restrooms. Why? For privacy you may wonder? No. This kooky plan is to allow the City by

the Bay to enter the new frontier: bathrooms for all genders—all 58 of them. I know most of you are now recalling that 6th grade science class where you learned about the two genders, male and female, as designated by the XX and XY chromosomes. Silly you! These are the days of Bruce Caitlyn Jenner. The city of San Francisco believes there are 58 different genders including: Bigender (a person who fluctuates between traditionally “woman” and “man” gender-based behavior and identities, identifying with both genders)

Genderqueer (a label often used by people who do not identify with the binary of man/woman) Pansexual (a person who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/ or spiritual attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions) Thus to accommodate these 58 varieties (particularly the likes of the three noted above), businesses and city buildings would be required to make singlestall restrooms available to all of them under legislation introduced by Supervisor David Campos. The measure requires businesses with singlestall restrooms to make sure that at least one is available to everyone on the gender spectrum, not

just males and females. “Equal rights and equal access should apply to restrooms just like everywhere else,” said Supervisor Mark Farrell, who is co-sponsoring the legislation.

I can only imagine what the stick figure signs identifying these restrooms will look like. Looking back Grandpa and Grandma were way ahead of their time. — Buffalo Gap News

Threads of Life ••• Hot Dog •••

by Cleo LeVally

Hot Dog could mean a warm puppy in the summertime, or it may mean that tasty meat on a bun that people enjoy at ball games. But why would a sandwich be called a Hot Dog? Well. There is a story...it may or may not be true…that many years go there was a man who sold a new kind of sandwich at the ballpark which he called a cube steak with mustard. That doesn’t sound like something you would want to

buy to eat, but people tried it and liked it. The story goes that this seller was followed by an old collie dog. On those hot summer afternoons at the ballpark, the poor dog would start to wilt under his long collie hair, and he would pant and look VERY hot. Every one noticed this very hot dog and people started calling the owner the hot dog man. Eventually everyone started calling the man’s sandwiches Hot Dogs.

Hot Dogs have been on the menu of restaurants and drive-ins for my entire life. When I was in high school in the 1930’s and was lucky to have a quarter for lunch occasionally, my favorite thing was a hot dog (just a wiener on a bun with mustard, cost 10 cents), a Mounds candy bar, and a 5 cent Coke. The school had a program where I received 25 cents a day when I kept his class. I think that program went quickly by the wayside, but I did keep class for the band teacher when I was needed.

ing those who belonged to “the Way.” He would likely describe himself as a “defender of his faith.” His hatred for Christians is evident. Jesus had a very different plan. He called Saul to a life far different than anything he could have imagined. Saul had no idea that his life would never again be the same. For three days he could not see and did not eat or drink. In the

end, it become a question of which plan to follow. Looking forward Saul could not see what we see looking backward. We know how God used him in remarkable ways. Saul did indeed yield to Jesus. It proved to be the most significant decision of his life. How we respond to Jesus becomes the most significant decision anyone makes.

One Pharmacist’s View With the election consuming so much of our news it’s real easy to lose track of those things which are, which ought to be and which things will be. For a person raised in Coal and Pontotoc Counties I find there are lots of things that I just don’t understand. Other things I have learned about. Bernie Sanders, our resident socialist for example, is one of them. You have to wonder just what all those people are thinking, pushing for this guy. Socialism has in fact not been very kind to countries that thought it was the answer to their problems. Several years ago I had a sale down at my old drug store. One item featured was toilet paper. I had the Delsey so cheap it was bound to be a run-a-way sale item - and it was. This

If Bernie gets in stock up on toilet papers

was in the mid-eighties and my salesman from McKesson’s Valu-Rite warned me that there was going to be a shortage of this absolute nationally critical item very soon. And there was. He had me order up a truckload and I did. So much that I had part of my garage at home stuffed full. A newspaper story in the Oklahoman soon verified our “fears” and a run on my precious sale item was underway. I don’t know how much tissue I sold but I’m sure I sold more that week than I would in any 10 year run. Sold it all. About that time I read about the horrific toilet paper shortage in Fidel’s Cuba. There have been shortages in other com-

munist societies too. A wannabe socialist country, Venezuela also was undergoing severe shortages. Their problem was a lack of foreign money reserves. Enforced socialism had ruined their economy and the toilet paper wipeout was just one of the main symptoms. Running out of toilet paper has brought down more than one communist government but nothing like it did in Chili. President Elect Salvador Allende, an avowed socialist took office in 1970 on a promise to confiscate foreign owned copper mines, give away free milk to school kids, redistribute land, raise minimum wages and nationalize most of Chili’s business. QUESTION: If we do things in the worship of God which He has not command or given us an inspired example, how can we know God approves? Can we know? Is it necessary that we have authority from God for what we do in worship or can we do whatever pleases us? Of course, if God has said not to do something, it would be sinful to do it, but what about things we might like and enjoy that God has not commanded?

Would God be offended if we do things He has not commanded? Perhaps we should ask two sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu. According to Leviticus 10:1-3, they “offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them.” We might think, “Fire is fire,” so what difference can it make? It made a difference to God because “fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.” In offering fire other than the fire God had commanded, they failed to regard God as holy and to glorify God. A s we might expect, their father, Aaron was upset and Moses explained, “This is what the Lord

spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; and before all the people I must be glorified.’ So Aaron held his peace.” (Leviticus 10:3) To glorify God, we must worship as God commands. How can we claim to have faith in God if we do that in worship that pleases us rather than following His commands? If we love God, we will keep His commandments. (John 14:15) We are saved by faith in God, but do we really have faith in Him if we go beyond His word (1 Corinthians 4:6), add to or take from his word? (Revelation 22:18-19)

ernment health care? Of course. Just to make sure his plans worked he did indeed do all this and they loved it. Their main export and source of foreign currency had been copper and it quickly went down to nothing. Business went broke giving wages but it was illegal to fire anyone. Banks had been nationalized and the bankers were made to loan whatever businesses needed. They did but businesses soon were unable to restock their shelves or buy parts. Inflation quickly went to 120%. Store shelves went bare. People had a gobs of money but there was nothing to buy. Did I mention there was no toilet paper? What got things moving

was their lack of toilet paper. It was all people talked about around the breakfast tables, at the market places, and on the radio and TV. Who knew that toilet paper was so essential for a president to stay in power. It was something that even congress couldn’t wipe away. By 1973 troops had marched into the presidential palace to arrest Allende. Allende committed suicide and in a little while capitalism returned to Chili. More importantly, toilet paper was back. Have a good week and for the sake of our country and to insure we continue to have plenty of toilet paper, be careful who you vote for. Of, course, don’t neglect going to church this Sunday.

Allen School Bond Election Follow up Information By Dr. Bob Gragg Allen Interim Superintendent T h e A p r il 5 , 2 0 1 6 results were more than 2 -1 in disapproval of the 6.8 Million Dollar school bond. The members of the Allen Board of Education and administration want to understand what it was about the proposed bond that caused the overwhelming voter disapproval. Some open comments indicated that it could have been the state of the economy combined with

the total amount of the bond. Others said it was not the right project; either too many classrooms, or classrooms on the wrong side of the campus, and others expressed a desire to have a new gymnasium along with classrooms and safe rooms. In order to better understand the messages behind the votes, the board will start with the following steps: The resolve is to explore these possible reasons and work together with the school and the community to re-structure the issues prior to calling another bond election. of the election results and give some guidelines to planning future facility initiatives. The board wants to appoint a task-force (committee) which will include representative members of the board of education, teachers, support staff, parents, community members and students. The role of the task-force will be to further explore the findings of the voter survey and expand the exploration of the challenges at hand. Once the survey is completed, and the task force (committee) reports back to the whole board, the next step will be to have community forums to further gather ideas and input about the options for looking at another school bond issue. These community meetings will occur prior to the board submitting a resolution calling for the next bond election.
