A heartfelt “See You!” It has been an exciting two days that now are drawing to a close. Even now, I dare to say that this congress was a great success, that an exchange of knowledge and experience took place and thus new inputs for further developments in the automotive and powertrain areas have been created. I would like to express my sincere thanks to you for coming to Graz. At the same time, I would also like to invite you back next year for the 25th anniversary of “Engine & Environment”. I can

promise you now that the programme will be once again first class, wideranging and forward-looking. The congress takes place on the 5th and 6th of September, 2013. You are holding in your hands a brief review of the past few days, which is hot off the press, produced and printed by our team, to give you a souvenir of our event on your way home. Enjoy browsing and reading the review and have a safe journey home!

Exciting and thoughtprovoking days More than 300 experts from 18 nations worldwide have come to Graz to share their knowledge and experience with others at the 24th AVL congress “Engine & Environment“. Renowned speakers delivered impulses and provided answers to questions concerning the increasingly stringent legal requirements relating to the CO2 emissions of vehicles. Electro-mobility was not neglected! The topics were dealt with in greater depth, not only during the presentations and the panel discussion concluding the conference, but also during one-to-one discussions in the breaks, in spontaneous discussions during the reception and also during the social evening, and at the bar. Talking helps! Despite the gravity of the situation, it was possible to enjoy entertaining hours during the welcome reception on

Wednesday evening at the invitation the Mayor of Graz, Siegfried Nagl. The delegates were able to gain insights into the Joanneum Quarter, one of the architectural jewels in Graz, the European Cultural Capital 2003. Many used the opportunity to see the current exhibition showing works by Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the outstanding representatives of Arte Povera. Accompanied by strings and piano the participants and their partners were treated to magical moments at the social evening on Thursday at the Aula of the Graz University. The evening began with cocktails at the invitation of the Governor of Styria and the magician Paul Sommersguter showed how he seemed to be able to make the impossible possible, thus perhaps strengthening the motivation of researchers to solve what seems upon first sight to be unsolvable.

Culture, architecture, culinary delights and fine wines On Thursday, the partner programme led the delegate’s relatives and friends from the European Cultural Capital 2003 to this year’s Capital, Maribor. After a stopover on the enchanting terrace of the City Hotel on the banks of the picturesque river Drau, there was an opportunity to have one’s photograph taken next to the oldest grapevine in the world. After a guided tour through Maribor, the second largest city of Slovenia, the programme continued with a visit to the southern Styrian wine country, to sample the delights and specialities of a “Buschenschank” (where the vines are considerably younger than the one on the banks of the Drau!). On Friday, a walk through the Styrian capital of Graz opened a window into the

past: Renaissance, Baroque, Empire, Art-nouveau and buildings from the 20’s could be admired by the participants, who could also emerge themselves in the contrast between Old and New. Masterpieces of architecture in the beautiful historical centre of Graz include the Museum of Art, Murinsel, and the Joanneum Quarter. Graz was designated a World Heritage Site in 1999 because of its magnificently preserved city centre whose almost seamless historical development can be seen in the cityscape. Graz does not fall short on culinary delights either; these were experienced by the participants in the restaurant “Prato” in the Sackstrasse, which has been awarded two “Hauben”, or toques, by the renowned gourmet-guide Gault Millau.
