Harry, a Roadster reader, had an awesome time at the Probite British Rally Championship's season opener – the East Riding Stages Rally! He tells ROADSTER! all about it!
The British Rally Championship (BRC) is the premier rallying series in the UK, showcasing top-tier talent and thrilling events!
Established in 1958, the Championship has a rich history of competitive racing on some of the most challenging gravel and asphalt stages across the country. The 2025 season, sponsored by Probite, features six rounds in some iconic locations.
Rallying is a great motorsport and the East Riding Stage was especially cool because rally fans could get super close to the action!
Rallying can be very dangerous, so while the racing itself was held over five stages on closed-off country lanes public roads around the town, a special @Visit East Yorkshire
of town giving lots of people a real chance to go along and join in! The FanZone was in the perfect spot, being in the middle of town with shops and plenty of food.
Harry tells Roadster! “We went along as a family as we’ve never seen anything like this being held in the area before. We saw majority nearly every car that was involved as they came to the check-point. There was a big TV Screen showing the time lap races. It was wet, very noisy but exciting!”
Harry waited until the end to see the top 3 on the winners podium, “I saw them receive their trophies and spray champagne everywhere!”
The cars parked up in the “FanZone”, giving Harry a chance to
& co-drivers and take photos. “I loved seeing the top 3 winning cars up close!
“My favourite car was Callum Black and Jack Morton’s black and gold Ford Fiesta Rally2. Callum let me look inside! The car is bare inside apart from the bucket seats & roll cage! It was cool to see!”
“I would love to try Rallying myself!!
Final thoughts Harry? “I would really recommend going to an event like this to other kids who are car fans, as you get to mingle with thedrivers & see the cars up close. You need to prepare yourself for the noise of the cars. They are really loud but really exciting!”

It's a Team Sport!
Rallying isn't just about the driver; there's also a co-driver who gives directions and helps the driver stay on course. They work together like a super-smart team!
Racing Against the Clock:
In rallying, you don't race side-by-side like in a car race. Instead, you race against time. The fastest car to complete the course wins!
Rally Cars Are Tough!
Rally cars are specially built to handle rough roads, mud, and even jumps. They have strong roll cages to keep the drivers safe.
Co-drivers Use Special Maps:
Co-drivers use detailed maps and notes to tell the driver where to go. They have to be really good at reading maps quickly.
Rallies Happen Everywhere:
Rally races take place in all sorts of places, like forests, mountains, and even snowy areas.
Drivers Need Super Skills:
Rally drivers need to be very skilled at controlling their cars, especially on slippery or bumpy roads.
It's Not Just About Speed:
While speed is important, rallying is also about being accurate and following the correct route.
There Are Different Types of Rallies:
Some rallies are on closed roads in forests (stage rallies), and others are on public roads (road rallies).
Anyone Can Start!
Kids can start learning about rallying and even participate in junior rallies or co-driving at a young age. Navigators can start from age 12.

This issue… the HUGE Humber Bridge!
The Humber is a large tidal estuary on the east coast of England. It is formed where the Rivers Ouse and Trent meet and it flows into the North Sea.
Although the estuary is quite short, it is very WIDE! So wide that it marks a natural boundary between the two counties of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The route around the estuary is by a long road route of motorways and busy local roads. It involved going inland for many miles, crossing at a narrow point (Goole), and then coming back out to the other side. The total distance between the City of Hull ontheNorthbankandthetownofGrimsbyonthesouth
at the
bank is just as the crow flies, yet a road trip betweenthetwowouldinvolveatripofsome80miles… aroundtripof 160 miles! Thetwoareaswere DIVIDED!
ThereisalonghistoryofboatcrossingsontheHumber. Steam ferries had plied the Humber since Victorian times,buttheyhadlimitedcapacityandwereveryslow.
Two big, strong towers hold the bridge. Thetowersaremadeofconcrete.Allthe weight of the bridge and the cars push down on those towers, so they have to bereally,reallytoughtoholditall!
PIERS!
The bridge towers stand on two giant blocks of concrete. One block is on land made of hard chalk,andtheotheriswaydown deep under the river! The groundisdifferentoneachside!
DECK!
The bridge's road is built on a special platform called a deck. It is made from lots of huge, heavy boxes joined together. It's got lanes for cars and a pathforwalkersandbikers.
AFRAMES!
Special A-shaped parts sit between the road and the towers. They let the road move a little bit, up to 2 meters,whencarsdriveby, itgetshotorwindy!
CABLES!
Thetowersholdtwohugecablesthatgo across the water. These cables are like thebridge'sbackbone–theyholdupthe roadandallthecarsdrivingonit.They're madeofthousandsofstrongsteelwires alltwistedtogether.
HANGERS!
ANCHORS!
HUGE concrete blocks at the ends of the bridge stop the cables from pulling the bridge inwards!
Lots of little steel ropes hang down from the big main cables and hold up the road. These ropes spread out all across the bridge and sharetheweightoftheroadevenly!

Building the bridge over such a wide expanse of water was a HUGE engineering challenge, and the harsh weather conditions in the Humberestuary,includingstrongwindsandstrongtides,addedtothe difficulties…
First,engineersbuiltthetowersandanchorpoints.Itwasthefirstmajor suspension bridge to use concrete towers - concrete was chosen becauseitisstronganddurable.
Next,theengineersstartedtoputinthemaincables.Theyusedaspecial technique called “spinning”. 37 strands of 404 lengths of cable are all twisted together to form the super strong cables. It took nearly two years!
Oncethecableswereinplacetheengineerscouldstartassemblingthe deck units. A total of 124 steel box sections were floated down the Humberandhoistedintoposition.
The scorching sun blossomed brightly over the Humber Bridge Like a mother awakening their child, Vibrant violent flowers danced in the gentle breeze, Doing their morning stretch.
The Humber Bridge stood proud in the wind Like the king of the jungle, In the luminous gorgeous sun.
As the Humber Bridge waved gently at the animals deep under the sea Birds flew between the bridge Searching their nearby tree.
The Humber Bridge is a colossal giant statue, beneath the dancing beautiful wavy clouds.

With my super-cool new bike skills, it was adventure time!
Riding on the roads without being scared of cars is great… I can go anywhere! So Dad and I went on a MEGA bike ride!
Since it was springtime, Dad wanted to see how awesome I'd become. First, he asked me to show him all the stuff I learned at Bikeability. I even showed him some tricks he didn't know!
When Dad was super impressed, we zoomed off into the countryside! We rode on bumpy bike paths, through squishy muddy fields, up BIG hills (phew!), and down super-fast hills (whee!). We rode for MILES and MILES! It was the BEST day!
Dad was amazed at how much braver I was on my bike. He said we could have lots more adventures now!
I'm so excited to go on bike rides every weekend (as long as it's not raining, of course!).
The UK is like a giant playground for bikes! There are so many amazing paths to explore. We can ride to the beach, through magical forests, and discover all sorts of hidden treasures!

The Aston Martin V8 was entirely handbuilt at Aston’s factory in Newport Pagnall. Each car took 1,200man-hourstofinish!
During the Classic Motor Show at the NEC, there wasONE car that each of the Roadster! kids made a beeline for… this wonderful bright yellow V8… Aston’s Martin’s mighty muscle car!
In the previous issue wehada look at the Aston Martin DB7 - a car developed as a much needed mass production addition to the hand built Astons which took many months to make. In this issue we thought we’d take a closer take a look at one of those handbuiltcars.
Aston Martin’s famous “DB” line dominated the1960’s…

Launched at the 1958 London MotorShow,theItalianstyledDB4 “Superleggera” caused a sensationintheearly60’s.
DB5
1963’s “DB5” was made super famous as James Bond’s gadget ladenspycar.
DB6
The “DB6” followed it in 1965 with refinements and improvements tothedesign.
Bytheendofthedecade,the“DB” stylingwasstartingtolookdated. BigAmericanmusclecarslikethe Ford Mustang, the Pontiac GTO and the Plymouth Roadrunner were becoming popular and Aston Martin needed something tocompete.
A new, more powerful V8-engine was being planned, but it was too big to fit into the “DB6”, so Aston setaboutdesigningan all new car fortheAmericancarmarket.
The brief was to take all of the classic “DB” elements but give them a more contemporary musclecartwist.
Aston launched the “DBS” in 1967, though the initially planned V8 engine wasn’t quite ready, so Astonfitteditwiththe“straight6” fromtheDB6.
The sleek and angular DBS V8 finally arrived in September 1969, becoming the fastest four-seater production car in the world at the time!
EVOLUTION
Over the course of its production life the car saw a few tweaks and changes:
The OG!
The OG! (Series 1), introduced in 1969 - the fastest four-seater around!

2
The Series 2 V8 arrived in 1972 with a new front end, twin headlights and a mesh grille. The car also featured a new fuel-injected version of the V8 engine.
Series 3
Launched in 1973, due to problems with the earlier fuel-injected engine. The car introduced some bodywork changesandallnewtyres.
Series 4 (aka Oscar India)
This car was launched in 1978, with a smoother hood, rear spoiler and wood trim in the interior.
The Series 4 introduced famous “Volante”convertiblemodelwhich provedtobeextremelypopular!
Series 5
Launched in 1986, the Series 5 brought an improved fuel-injectedengine.

Richie, Jack & Sam check out the mighty V8 engine of the Series 3. The big metal box on the top houses a Weber carburetor. This mixes air and fuel together to give the car POWER!! - The carb was so BIG Aston had to fit a special scoop into the bonnet!

Sharing the Love!
The car the Roadster! kids got to look at was a 1978 Series 3 model. The car is an AMAZING factory original bright yellow paint colour called “Mandarin Yellow” - this makes the car really rare! Aston Martin say only around 8 cars were ever produced in this colour - one is in AUSTRALIA!
Just like James Bond’s car, this car has been fitted with a few “optional extras” to upgrade it to "Vantage spec"some SERIOUS engine upgrades! turning it from a “tame” muscle car into a BEAST of a machine!

Here’s a question to think about… Pictureaskateboarderridingramps inaskateboardpark.
How does the rider get to top of each ramp?
Theriderbuildspowerbyusingthe weight of their body (their mass) to move the board, and the motion of the board to buildupspeed(their velocity).
Eventually, all of these elements combine to create enough energy to get the skateboard to the top of each ramp… the greater the amount of energy the higher theboardgoes!

What happens to all the energy that has built up?
The rider will either LOSE the amount of energytheyhavebuiltupbytryingtostop, or they will USE the built up energy to taketheboardinanotherdirection.
● Normally an electric motor provides the car’s with its power (output).
● With regenerative braking, when a driver takes their foot off the accelerator pedal the motor is reversed, turning it into a machine for making power (input).
● When the brakes are applied the energy that has been built up by the motion of the car is captured and transferred into the motor, creatingelectricity.
● This electricity is then stored in the car’s battery, providing small boosts in the battery’s range… clever!

What did you like?
I really liked all of the pictures. The were cool and realistic and looked like they were from a comic.
What ones did you like most?
The big picture of the remote control cars, the people working at the track and the actual tracks. I liked the Silverstone one because I’ve been there, but I can’t remember where I sat.
The one of how close a driver’s bum is to the track was cool, and we pretended to be racing drivers by copying how he was sat in the picture.
What did you learn from the books?
I didn’t know that drivers had to do a pit stop in each race or how the points worked. I was really surprised that the driver would lose their position in the race because they would lose 20-30 seconds in the pits. I also didn’t realise how many people work on the car in a stop.
A fact that amazed me was that there can be as manyas 1000 people working for an F1 team but that only about 60 can go to the race!

The Racing Legends series promises children fun facts, stats and stories about their favourite F1 racing drivers. What did Woody think?
I was surprised that Norris was four when he started on a quadbike and that he didn’t pass his driving test the first time.
What was your favourite section?
I liked where it talked about designing your own track. I drew a track on a big piece of cardboard and raced cars around it.
Would you recommend this book to other children? I would recommend it because it has lots of interesting facts and teaches me things that I didn’t know before.
How would you rate the books out of five? FIVE out of FIVE as they are perfect!

The museum was founded by John Haynes in 1985. You may recognise the Haynes name from theHaynesmanuals-arangeofDIY guidebooksonhowtoworkonyour car. They have published over 200 million manuals since the first in 1966!
JohnHayneswantedtosharehis passion for cars with others, so he set up a museum to house his vast collection. The museum is housed in a former WWII munitions depot and showcases a diverse collection of vehicles from around the world. It'saconstantlyevolvingspace,with exhibitschangingregularly,asthere aresomanycarsinthecollection!
Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset has the UK's largest collection of cars and bikes, dating from 1885 to the present day.

We had a great day! The Haynes Motor Museum is a really good family day out. They have an outdoor display where I got to sit in some cars. They also have motorbikes, allsortsofracingcars, American Classics and the incredible “Red Room”, where every caris,ofcourse,RED!Therewasso much to see, including Richard Hammond's Drivetribe Exhibition. I didn’t even mention the Ferrari RoomortheWilliamsF1display!
The Haynes Motor Museum also takes family fun very seriously too! There's something for everyone, from exciting exhibits to fun play areas for kids. Kids can also enjoy climbingframes,go-karts,andeven drivetheirownlittlecars!
It'saperfectwaytospendadayout with the whole family. I would really recommendavisit!
