Thank you to EVERYONE who has helped us make ROADSTER! Over the past two years. Your generosity, help and support has been so appreciated. Thank You.

This special “Best Of” ROADSTER! Is dedicated to:

THE ENTIRE ROADSTER! TEAM Look at what you guys have done! You should be so proud of yourselves for all you have achieved!

A very special dedication to SAM. Sam, This one is for YOU. Two years ago you had an amazing idea. You were only 8, but just look at all you have accomplished with it! This issue celebrates everything YOU have done. You’ve really gone for it, and I am so proud of you. It has been a joy to share it with you.

Hold ROADSTER! in your hand, show it off, treasure it forever. It’s yours.

Hello! Welcome to ROADSTER! Magazine and a special welcome toournewreaders!

I first had the idea for ROADSTER! when I was eight years old, and my Dad helped me make it happen! We’ve made six magazines now and we’vehadalotoffun!

We’ve been making ROADSTER! For two years now, and Dad said we should do something special to mark our 2nd birthday. We came up with this “best of” idea and we have worked together to choose our favouritepiecestoputin.

It was REALLY hard, because everything is special! In the end we had to try and squash features down to fit more in. We didn’t have as much space in this one as we do in the regular magazine. Some things we really liked, but we couldn’t fit them in at all. There’s no “Are We There Yet?”, no museum visits, no events… we just couldn’t find a way tosquashthemalldown!

Hopefully you’ll enjoy what we’ve picked and will be able to see why we picked them. They remind me of special times, and of all of the funwehavehad.

Ihopeyoulikeit.

Sam, age 10

ROADSTER! MISSION STATEMENT:

Roadster! aims to be a not-for-profit adult-facilitated, child-led children’s automotive magazine dedicated to educating, inspiring and entertaining its young readers in all things “the road”.

We use connected learning experiences to introduce children to the automotive world, teach them about road safety, develop their awareness and drive their interest.

ROADSTER! VISION STATEMENT:

Roadster! has the potential to become a social enterprise charity endeavour, which brings together industry partners and provides a key communication channel through which to engage with a diverse range of children - tomorrow’s drivers, innovators, employees, consumers, and community members.

A NOTE FOR PARENTS FROM DAD

Thank you for buying your child this special copy of ROADSTER!

ROADSTER! Is our not-for-profit motoring magazine for kids. The magazine aims to educate, inspire and entertain kids, and involves them in the production - kids love to see their work in print!

We didn't have any real aspirations when we started Roadster! - Sam thought there should be a car magazine for kids and we thought it would be fun to try and make one. It was a private game really, but when people were encouraging we thought we'd keep pushing it further.

We have achieved everything we set out to and far more. On a fundamental level, we made our magazine. This "best of" shows off just how much we've achieved, and how much fun we've had in making it.

We think the magazine you hold in your hands really does represent everything the project is all about. It shows there is great potential for a motoring magazine for kids and shows the type of content WE think such a magazine could include. We aren’t out of ideas either. We think we have hit on something special with our child-led idea. This magazine proves the concept.

Making a “best of” has been an interesting exercise. For one thing, picking features proved to be extremely difficult... the kids have done SO MUCH cool stuff in making the magazine! A huge thank you to EVERYONE who has embraced and supported the project.

Putting this magazine together has also made us take stock. We’ve been reflecting on how far we’ve come, and thinking a lot about what could have been done differently. We’ve learned so much! In this way, the “best of” wraps up our first act. We know there is a lot we want to change in the 2nd Act.

2nd Act? As we look to the future we feel constrained by our own limitations. For Roadster! to continue it needs MORE than we currently have. It needs more readers, more adult time, more children, more parents willing to take a chance, more funding, more industry support, more sponsorships, more advertising, more know how, more resources… More of everything!

At the point we go to print Roadster! no longer feels sustainable and we just don’t know whether this special issue actually represents the final scene in a one act play. We WANT to continue, but there is a lot stacked against us. We've shown here the potential for Roadster! but it needs real help now. Only together can we do it!

The ROADSTER! Story begins with a single email! Sam loves the car maker Aston Martin and he especially loves the Aston Martin DB5!

When we were looking for our first feature, Roadster! Dad found the DB5 Junior and thought it was perfect car to review in the magazine! One night, at Sam’s bedtime, Dad sent an email to The Little Car Company. Then this happened…

DB5 JUNIOR: Small Scale Classic!

Ariel, Radical, Aston Martin, Ginetta and Lotus, making them expertsengineers!

The Aston Martin DB5 is one of the most famous cars in the world. Very rare and very expensive, the car is highly desirable but is out of reach for all but the richest people. Fortunately, a company in Bicester in the UK is working with Aston Martin to produce a very special electric interpretationofthisiconiccar.

The Little Car Company was established in 2019 with the aim of making beautiful cars that can be shared and enjoyed across different generations. It’s “junior” cars are smaller scale interpretations of famous full scale classics, produced in partnership with the most elite carmanufacturersintheworld. Its team of engineers building its cars have years of experience of building cars for McLaren, Williams,JaguarLandRover, Sam from Roadster! gets up close and personal with the DB5 Junior

Roadster! was extremely privileged to receive a special invitationtovisitthefactory, take a look behind the scenes and get behindthewheelofTheLittleCar Company’s new Aston Martin DB5 Junior!

Roadster’s experience of The Little Car Company began before we had even arrived at the factory. The Little Car Company has an amazing website with details all of the cars it makes. The website includes a car configurator which can be used to experiment with a range of different car colours and seat options. Roadster! had great fun playing around with the configurator to build its perfect car… an Aston Martin in Goodwood Green with Oxford Tan seating!

King Of The

Meet Sam, the nine ten year old Editor-in-Chief of his own motoring magazineforchildren!

Sam is a fairly normal boy. He is part of a normal family and he goes to normal primary school. He likes to play with LEGO and play on his Nintendo Switch. He likes watching Minecraft videos on YouTube andhe’s not a big fan of doing his homework. He does all of the normal things that normal boys do… it just happens that he is also in charge of a growing motoring magazine project!

Here he tells us all about it!

What made you decide to make a car magazine?

I wanted to do it because I couldn’t find a car magazine for kids. I thought I may as well try making one myself!

Did anything in particular inspire you? I wanted to learn more about real cars. I liked watching Top Gear - they drove some really cool cars! A friend of mine (Richie) liked making comics and he inspired me to try something myself. I put the two ideas together!

How did you get started?

I just drew my idea on a piece of paper. I started drawing out my idea for a front cover and all of the things that I wanted in it. My Dad said it was really good so he helped me to put it onto Google slides.

What is in a Roadster?

There’s always a main feature about a cool car, a supercar, visits, museums, road signs, jokes, an Eddy comic, games, posters…

What’s it like making Roadster?

It’s fun! You get to go to so many places and do so many different things. Not many kids get to do that.

What does your role of Editor involve?

I’m in charge! I actually do lots of different things - I talk to my Dad about my ideas and what I want to do with each issue. I really like the bits where we get out to do something. Dad usually introduces me, but then he lets me lead whatever it is we are doing.

I love getting hands-on with cars for my “Backseat Driver” reviews and taking photographs.

When we are making the actual magazine on the computer I get involved with designing and I do bits of writing. I look at everything before it is finished and decide if it is ok. If anyone sends anything for the magazine I read it and decide if I’m happy.

Do you have any favourite cars?

The Aston Martin DBS is my absolute favourite! I also like the Aston Martin DB5, I like the Volkswagen ID Buzz. It looks really nice! I’ve also sat in the Alpine A290 - a cool new sports car with the driving seat in the middle!

What do you want to achieve with Roadster in the future?

I make the magazine for me and my friends. I’m happy with that but it would be good if other children could read it too!

Do you have any advice for other children who may want to get involved?

Send us something! We want articles, drawings, photos. You can do Backseat Driver reviews of cars, make a car show out of toy cars.

REMEMBER!

The ROADSTER! Roadsign

Collection

In each issue of ROADSTER! we add a new roadsign (or two) to our road sign collection! Each time we look at the sign, what it means, and how it is used.

We’ve decided to show off our collection so far in this best of issue, but we’ve messed up and got the signs and their labels all mixed up!

Can you help us sort them out?

School Crossing Patrols

A school crossing patrol, also known as a lollipop person, helps to provide a safe crossing point for children on their way to and from school.

They work at busy crossing locations during the school day, stopping traffic to allow pedestrians to cross. They are required to wear a uniform and display a stop sign.

The Green Cross Code is a road safety awareness initiative by the National Road Safety Campaign (now the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, or RoSPA) which began in 1970.

No matter how you get there, the journey to school can often present a perilous gauntlet of obstacles and challenges for the bravest of adventurers!

In Issue 5, we provided a guide through the various dangers to help keep YOU safe on your journey to school! Here we summarise the various challenges to look out for!

CHALLENGE #1: CAR CHAOS!

School zones are full of cars, parked, moving, and everywhere in between! They can block footpaths and crossings, making it tricky to get around safely.

CHALLENGE #2: PARENTS IN A HURRY!

Grown-ups can be forgetful, stressed, or distracted, especially when rushing to drop you off or pick you up.

CHALLENGE #3: SPEEDY CARS!

School zones usually have slower speed limits to keep everyone safe. But some drivers ignore the rules!

CHALLENGE #4: THE SHORTCUT TRAP!

Crossings and safety barriers are there to keep you safe! Darting across the road to save time can be dangerous!

CHALLENGE #5: SLEEPING CARS!

Parked cars might seem safe, but they can zoom out or someone might open a door right into you!

CHALLENGE #6: BAD WEATHER BLUES!

Rain, wind, or snow can make getting to school tricky.

CHALLENGE #7: DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL!

School rocks! Hanging with friends, fun lessons… But all that excitement can make you forget to be careful!

GEARBOXES

ROADSTER! How it works series

A gearbox is used to help a vehicle achieve speed and direction, but how? ROADSTER! looks at a manual gearbox to find out!

If a vehicle didn’t have a gearbox then its road wheels would simply connect to the engine through a combination of different wheels, axles and shafts. When a driver presses the accelerator pedal it makes the engine works harder and the car speeds up, but without gears the engine would work too hard and would quickly overheat and wear out.

A vehicle’s gears help to prevent this. The gears are a collection of different sized wheels which fit and work together (called gear ratios) to reduce the speed of the engine but maintain the speed of the road wheels. A combination of different gears helps the road wheels of the vehicle turn faster increasing its speed.

DIDYOUKNOW?

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A driver selects different gears through the combined use of a gear lever in the cockpit of the vehicle, and a clutch foot pedal.

The clutch is a plate that grabs (or “clutches”) the engine (specifically a component called the flywheel) and connects it to the selected gear in the gearbox. When a driver pushes the clutch pedal the clutch disconnects the engine from the gearbox.

This allows the driver to choose different gears using the gear lever. The gear lever connects to a gear selector fork which connects to the selected gear.

The driver then lifts their foot away from the clutch pedal gradually, to connect the gear with the engine).

Pressing the accelerator pedal makes the engine flywheel rotate faster making the vehicle pick up speed.

Being able to drive might just be one of the greatest REAL superpowers…

Many kids are really excited to get into driving, and for good reason! No more waiting for buses or relying on grown-ups. You can visit friends in different towns, explore hidden places, and go on epic adventures!

But with great power comes great responsibility. The law says you can’t actually start to drive a car on public roads until you are aged 17. but before can be let loose you need to LEARN the knowledge, skills and attitude to be able to drive a car confidently and keep yourself and others safe.

The trouble is, for a young and inexperienced 17 year old who has never driven a car before, there is a LOT to suddenly have to start thinking about: how to control the car (like steering and braking); how to understand the road (like traffic lights, signs and road markings; special tricks (like parking without bumping anything!) how to drive on different types of roads; how to spot dangers; how to avoid BEING a danger,,, phew! The list goes on!

Lots of driving instructors think kids under 17 actually learn BETTER! Enthusiastic kids are like sponges, soaking up all the info about how cars work and how to be safe on the road.

Young Driver, is a company giving KIDS the chance to learn to drive aREALCAR by providing driving experiences for children from the age of 10 in dual-controlled cars on private land. It uses UK Government approved driving instructors to provide children with responsible learning, in a fun, safe, and controlled environment… Young Driver isn’t about driving on busy streets - it's all about learning the basics in a safe & fun place!

Young Driver believe that giving children the chance to learn driving skills from an earlier age, will help to make them safer, more confident and more considerate drivers in the future. Young Driver is about helping children to develop the right driving attitudes through fun and safe hands-on experiences and lessons, giving them a head start before even applying for their provisional licence. Abridged

about pre-drive safety checks, and learn how to make the car go, steer, stop, speed up and slow down.

Group 2 - More advanced - you learn about judgement and control. Learning to stop, how big the car is, how close things are, how to position the car on the road and how to judge obstacles are covered.

Group 3 - Thinking like a driver. Learners drive on a road system with otherYoung Driver traffic. Drivers have to meet other traffic safely, cross the path of other cars and deal with any obstructions in the road.

Group 4 -This is about developing your control skills much more. It includes things like turning the car around, parking, and slalom challenges.

REAL car. It was the best day ever!”

Peter has already had follow up sessions. “It was a life changing experience” he says. ROADSTER! Highly recommends it!

THE CAR:

Vauxhall Corsa

Young Driver use a fleet of dual controlled Vauxhall Corsa “SE Premium” cars to teach the next generation of drivers. Vauxhall Corsa’s are very popular with driving schools because they are perfect for learner drivers! They have lightweight steering for easy manoeuvrability, have excellent all around visibility, helping the learner driver see everything that is going on around them, and have smooth controls which are responsive to your touch - giving confidence to those just starting out.

THE CIRCUIT: Gaydon, Warwickshire

Young Driver operate at venues across the UK but Roadster! visited this circuit close to the British Motor Museum. An enclosed, safe piece of private land well away from the dangers of public roads, it offers a perfect and realistic road system including crossings, roundabouts and junctions. “It was like a giant playmat for real cars!” It had things zebra crossings, bends, speed bumps, a car park and even a mini roundabout! A perfect place to learn about gear changing, clutch control, braking and steering!

With over 70 venues around the United Kingdom, there’s bound to be a Young Driver centre near you! Check out www.YoungDriver.com or their app!

THE VIDEO:

While parents get to watch their children take part in a young Driver lesson from a safe spot away from the circuit, they do miss out on what is going on INSIDE the car. Similarly, children are so busy concentrating and having a good time it is sometimes difficult to remember what they did!

Young Driver have come to the rescue with their in-car filming service! For a small additional fee, parents can buy an SD memory card recording of the experience, so it is always available to share with friends and family!

The Young Driver circuit at Gaydon: “like a giant playmat for real cars!”

LEARNING THE S-WAY:

ROADSTER! has an M4 adventure with IVECO’s S-WAY truck!

Abridged version of a feature in Roadster! Issue2!

ROADSTER! isn’t JUST about cars… we love trucks as well!ATruckStopontheM4maynotsoundlikeavery exciting place, but for Roadster! it was the setting for a thrilling trucking adventure, as editor Sam and comic artist Richie were invited by IVECO to sample theirS-Waytruck!

Imagine you want a new toy. How does it reach you? “Globalisation” is where goods are manufactured in different countries and shipped all around the world. That toy you want may have been made in a factory overseas. To get to you, it has to travel a long way!

Big ships carry lots of things across oceans. When the ship arrives, trucks take the things off the ship and bring them to special places called distribution centers. At the distribution center, the things are sorted and put into big boxes, then big trucks take the boxes to shops and stores near your home. You might have seen them driving on the motorway? They have big trailers thatcan hold lots of stuff!

IVECO is an Italian manufacturing company specialising in commercial vehicles such as trucks. The S-Way is a heavy duty truck designed for longhaul missions. Its design includes enhanced aerodynamics, features intended to save fuel, and innovative steps forward to reduce CO2 emissions!

DIDYOUKNOW?

The first ‘trucks’ were slow movingsteamwagons?

Roadster’s experience started by meeting IVECO’s team by the side of a lovely smelling cornish pasty stand at the Eastbound Reading Services. Roadster! was given an all important safety briefing and high visibility jackets to wear before being escorted to the waiting truck. “I can see it!” shouted Sam, as the party got nearer.

DIDYOUKNOW?

The development of the motorwaynetworkafterthe Second World War saw the development of trucks for longer-distance freight transportation.

Long haul truck drivers have to drive for many hours, have to have regular rests to prevent them driving when tired, and often have lots of waiting around, as cargo is loaded and unloaded, or they are stuck in traffic!

Because of this, it is extremely important that trucks are a driver’s home away from home. Everything needs to be close at hand to the driver when they are driving, and there needs to be a comfortable living space to relax in when taking those all important rest breaks.

Roadster! was shown how the IVECO S-WAY manages this, with a spacious and well laid out cab designed to improve a driver’s working and living experience.

The boys got to see how the truck’s driving area has been created to make truck driving as comfortable as possible, They tried out the leather driver’s seat with air suspension which automatically adjusts to make the ride more comfortable. They also saw how the driving area has been designed to provide lots of space and excellent visibility, with handy steering wheel controls, air conditioning controls, and handy storage for drinks and important paperwork.

Hi-Tech features include Apple CarPlay, which allows drivers to mirror their smart phones, and Amazon Alexa which allows drivers to interact with the truck, navigate, obtain traffic reports and communicate with other drivers simply by using their voice!

The boys were then given a tour of the S-Way’s living quarters.

Despite being extremely compact, the S-Way’s living space feels bright, airy and spacious, thanks to the skylight window and bright coloured walls. The bed was comfortable (we didn’t try the bunk!). Storage bins, chargingpoints

Driver’s also need food storage and preparation, and places to store bedding, clothes and personal effects. The S-Way cleverly utilises overhead lockers for storage and a microwave for cooking. A large fridge and freezer slide out from under the bed and can easily accessed by the driver whendriving.

Armed with Walkie-Talkies, the boys then took it in turns to ride in the S-Way in a convoy down the M4! The boys thoughtitwasanAMAZINGexperience.

Morgan started making artworks for the love of it, but his natural ability soon started drawing attention!

Last year, Morgan won a commission from the Swindon Advertiser to showcase his stunning artwork on one of Swindon’s “Swindogs” - a collection of impressive six foot balloon dog sculptures completedas part the town’s Big Dog Art Trail.

Morgan is also the youngest artist to be invited to paint a Wild in Art sculpture.

Morgan first started drawing cars during an event linked to the Swindon Art Trail and he has been drawing cars ever since! He has drawn live at a Lamborghini customer event in Bristol and at Five Zeros Supercars.

More recently Morgan was commissioned by Castle Combe Circuit for a special project and he has also exhibited his work.

ROADSTER! got to have a chat with Morgan about his artworkandhisloveofcars…

WHYDIDYOUDECIDETOSTARTILLUSTRATINGCARS?

I had thought cars were difficult to draw before. It wasn’tuntil someone asked if I could draw his dad’s pickup and showed me a photo, I quickly sketched it and his dad was so impressed!

HAVEYOUALWAYSLIKEDCARS?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t like cars! My favourite film when I was little was Pixar Cars and I had all the die cast models. I also had Hot Wheels. We always watch Top Gear too.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CAR AND WHY?

I like so many, but the Aston Martin Valkyrie is one of the best track cars ever made! I like that is it has an open wheel from the cockpit view. It’s basically like an F1 car that’s road legal!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE CAR TO ILLUSTRATE? My favourite was the Porsche 911 RSR - an awesome looking car! It was the first car I drew at A3 size so I was able to include a lot more detail.

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE FOR YOUR ARTWORK?

I draw on paper especially for markers. I use HB Pencils for sketching the shape first, then Uni-ball fineliners for outlines and brush tips for the darkest shadowed areas. I have a set of 320 Ohuhu brush tip alcohol markers which blend really well. I use a set of 72 Prismacolor Premier pencils for added shading and gradients. I use white Posca pens for highlights.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR KIDS INTERESTED IN ART?

I would say find what interests you and then practice… Practice a lot! Don’t get discouraged by comparing yourself to others and only focus on your own development.

A "platform" is a set of design, engineering, and production features which are shared by differentvehicles.

Hyundai has developed the Electric Global Modular Platform (or "E-GMP") which houses the batteries, the electric motor and power system.Hyundaihavebeenable mount fast charging longer range batteries under the floor of the car and moving the wheels further toward the front and back of the car to provide a larger, flattercabinfloorspace.

kind of curve to give more space for my legs. There is a lot more space than I am used to! It was really light too. The colour of the seats and the big glass roof helped to make it really bright inside. My sister and I actually liked it when it was quite dark. The doors have blinds which you can pull up to block out the sun. There was a really nice light in the door whichglowedindifferentcolours.Itfeltlikeahotel!!

Another thing I liked was the seats. The seats were really comfy and they heated up! You could also slide the bum part forwards and the back part back, to help you relax on a long trip.

The middle of the seat pulled down and it had two cup holders in it which was really useful, but the best part was it was wide so you could use it to balance a computer. It was really good because you could plug the computer in to a propersocketlikeinahousesothecomputerwouldneverrun out of charge! It was fun to work on ROADSTER! inside the car!

There were other things I liked too. The middle part could slide back making it easy to reach into storage and plug in chargers. There were air vents to help keep you warm or cool andtherewasareadinglightabovethedoor.

We pull out of the Alpine dealership and head out of town…

Dad: Wow! This feels different to our family SUV Sam!”

Sam: “It’s really cool! Do you like it?”

Dad: “I think so. It’s the first time I’ve ever driven a sports car and the seats are a lot lower down. I feel like I can feel everything the car is doing -it’s almost like I’m part of it”.

Sam: “I really like the sports seats!”

Dad: “They are special comfort seats that come with the GT model. They are to keep you comfortable during long journeys”.

Dad: “Ok Sam, you are in charge of the entertainment as always”

Sam: “Dad, it’s got Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so we can play Spotify through your phone”.

We drive on through quiet villages.

Sam: “I like how it’s got a unique style. It doesn’t really look like any other cars”.

Dad: “That’s true. I like how it pays respect to the original Alpine cars while also being modern.

Sam: “Well the multimedia touch screen looks a lot like ours, and the switches are very similar. Those vents are the same too”.

Dad: “I think it’s because they are all part of the same family. This is a Renault brand car the same as ours”.

We enter a 70mph speed limit zone

Dad: “This car has different driving modes. There are Normal, Sport or

Track modes which change the way the car drives. We’ve been driving in Normal mode. If I press a button on the steering wheel…”

Sam: “Press it Dad, go on, press it!”

Dad presses the button. The normal dials for the speedo and rev counter folding down to reveal a set of sportier looking ones

Sam: “Did you see that Dad? It’s like a James Bond car! It’s changing to show the gadgets!”

Dad presses the accelerator. The car roars and speeds up! Dad has to slow down!

BACKSEAT DRIVER PassengerSeat!

Sam: “Wow! That was quick Dad!” liked about this car. It is really sporty. The seats are really comfortable. I really liked the carbon fibre around the air vents and centre.

I didn’t like that there was not very much storage space, but Dad told me this was because the Alpine is light and fast. I also didn’t like where the USB chargers are. I couldn’t get my hand into the charger connection.

Being in this car was like an adventure. I imagined I was a secret spy driving fast. We made up a fun game up where I tried to imagine where spy gadgets would come out from!

It was exciting and a lot of FUN! I’d give it 8.5 out of 10!

As we were driving an Alpine we just HAD to call in at Enstone, home to Alpine’s Formula 1 Team!

AtEnstone,theBWTAlpineF1®Teamdesign, test,andmanufacturethe F1®car.

What happens inside Enstone is a closely guarded secret (teams don’t want their competitors finding out what they are doing) and, try as he did, the security guard certainly wasn’t going to let a boy into the factory-even ifhe was theworld’syoungest careditorinanAlpine!

Trak Racer Alpine F1® Simulator

Trak Racer make high-end gaming platforms and it is working with Alpine to produce a sim racing rig which has been co-produced by F1 engineers!

Sam: I love racing sims and this one felt really good. I actually felt like I was driving a real F1® car!

BATAK Pro

The BATAK Pro is a piece of equipment designed to improve reaction, hand eye co-ordination and stamina. It is a frame comprising of twelve bright LED targets.

Sam: It was really hard! It got faster and faster but it was great fun and quite addictive!

With thanks to Tim Jones, at the Jaybee Alpine Centre in Banbury, and the Alpine Esports stand at the British Motor Show, for letting Roadster! try some of their tech out!

Polestar’s Comic Book Hero!

DESIGN - Synergy uses the air flow around it to increase its speed, use less energy, and increase its grip on the road.

POLESTAR - recognisably Polestar! clean, minimal and functional design. signature blade-shaped headlights, and an awesome ribbon-like rear light bar across the back!

COCKPIT - like a superfast military jet! a single comfortable seat, plane-like steering wheel and Glowing panels showing all sorts of information about the car.

STYLING - dramatic, sleek and futuristic, with comic book style sweeping lines, geometric shapes and curves.

MWAHAHAHA HHHH!!.

Eddy, I want you to wipe off your makeup, and be outside in the penguin racer in 20 minutes, OK?

Ah, here he is!

30 minutes later….

Hang on, there’s no one in there …

EDDY??

Er, Peter, who are you talking to?

But if Eddy’s here, and not inside the car, then…

Where is he?

Ha ha, I bet, Eddy’s just hiding in the footwell pushing the pedals!

who is determined to make her mark!

Milena Clark is a young girl who loves motor racing! Here she tells ROADSTER! how she found her way into the sport, about her journey so far, and her hopes for the future…

HI MILENA! TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF?

Hi Roadster! My name is Milena, I love everything motorsports and I enjoy indoor and outdoor karting. There aren’t many of us girls in motorsport so being interviewed for this magazine is one for the girls!

YOU ARE JUST 13 YEARS OLD. HOW ON EARTH DID YOU DISCOVER MOTORSPORT?

I was invited to my local go kart track, Rogue Leisure in Aylesbury, for a free session with my brother and dad. I loved the speed and the adrenaline rush it gave me!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?

I came across the Girls on Track programme in January 2023, and had the opportunity to attend Williams Racing for an event! We then heard about Teamsport Race Academy and I joined in October 2023. I have been attending regularly since! I started in their Advanced sessions in February 2024.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION AND WHY?

My biggest inspiration is Lewis Hamilton not just because he’s the world’s best F1 driver, but he founded Mission 44 to help improve diversity in motorsports and offer more opportunities to people from lots of different backgrounds.

YOU HAVE A HEALTH CONDITION DON’T YOU? WOULD YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?

I have life threatening condition called “Adrenal Insufficiency”. The adrenal gland is like an EV car charging station - it makes a hormone called “cortisol” that helps power your batteries! It makes you feel strong, energetic, and deal with things that stress you out. My body isn’t producing enough cortisol, so it’s like my battery runs out of charge!

THAT SOUNDS REALLY TOUGH. IT MUST BE CHALLENGING TO TRY AND MANAGE YOUR CONDITION AND BE A RACER?

Basically I ignore it! (I’m joking!). My mum does all the worrying for me. She makes sure I have my medication which I double if I’m feel stressed about a race. My mum makes sure I have my emergency injection kit and tells the race staff about my condition in case I need medical assistance.

YOUR HEALTH CONDITION HAS MADE YOU CHAMPION DISABILITY IN MOTORSPORT?

Because my medical condition is rare, I try to share lots of information about it on my social media to make people aware of it. Even though you face challenges in your life you should try your best to take risks for the things you love!

HOW IS IT TRYING TO GET INTO MOTORSPORT?

It’s tough because racing is a really expensive sport! My dad also works evenings and weekends, so my mum usually hasto take me, but she has to split herself between me and my siblings so there’s opportunities that have to be missed!

IS ENOUGH IS BEING DONE TO SUPPORT CHILDREN LIKE YOURSELF WHO WANT TO GET INTO THE SPORT?

There are lots of opportunities, but it’s not always clear or straightforward to understand how you get involved. A clear path of what you can do next would be really helpful.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER CHILDREN WHO WANT TO GET STARTED IN MOTORSPORT?

Believe in yourself and don’t let anyone get in your way!

THANKS MILENA! GOOD LUCK!

Aston Martin Valhalla

The hybrid supercar YOUR parents need to buy!

Not only did I meet Sam and the rest of the ‘Roadster!’ team for the first time at the January Bicester Scramble, but I also saw two (!) Aston Martin Valkyries!

These are AMAZING cars! When you see these spaceships in the metal it is obvious why they are regarded as the wildest cars on the road. They sit so low, the sculpture of the aerodynamic design is stunning and they draw BIG crowds!

The Valkyrie is primarily designed for the track, so while it is super fast, it is a bit bumpy and loud for everyday driving!

You might be struggling to convince your parents to add one to the garage but DON’T WORRY, because Aston Martin has a solution for you! It is called the Valhalla and it is Aston’s attempt at creating a more refined and usable supercar, without dampening the performance.

Parents will like the fact that the Valhalla will be more comfortable than the Valkyrie, as the suspension will likely be softer and the weight saving will be less extreme to give customers a more luxurious interior. For example, it will include speakers to listen to your favourite tunes, unlike the Valkyrie which can only play music through clunky headphones!

Even though it's amazing, your parents might have some concerns about the Valhalla’s supercar price… as it will cost around £600,000!

Super - Supercar Corner!

What would a car magazine for kids be WITHOUT supercars?

James approached us way back in February 2023, having read about Sam's project. James wanted to help and, at the same time, build his own skills, confidence and experience.

James has now done five brilliant pieces for us, and he is starting to find opportunities to write elsewhere too!

Thanks for all of your help James!

If they say that is too expensive just tell them that the Valhalla is around a QUARTER of the cost of the Valkyrie, AND it STILL has around 87% of the Valkyrie’s power… making it a REAL bargain!

The bodywork is slightly less radical, making speed bumps and curbs less alarming, but lots of styling cues remain such as the ridiculously cool rear lights that look like carefully cut shards of glass, and a huge rear diffuser pulling the car down into the road to help with grip.

The Valhalla is capable of completing journeys of less than 9 miles purely with its electric motor, so not only is it kinder to the environment, but it will also save your parents money on their fuel bills… making it perfect for the school run!

The electric motor is paired with a V8 engine which makes the Valhalla a direct rival to the Ferrari SF90 XX that we reviewed two issues ago. Compare the fact cards… which which is your favourite?

The Valhalla will be on the road later this year but your parents need to act fast! Although there will be around 849 more Valhallas than Valkyries they will still sell quickly!

Hopefully your reminders that the Valhalla is cheaper, more usable, and just as exciting to drive as the Valkyrie will persuade your parents to place an order… but you may have to settle for a poster!
