Real Kids, Real Cars, Real Reviews!

BACKSEAT DRIVER

At Roadster!, we care about the kids in the backseat! You might not be the one driving, but your safety and comfort are SUPER important—especially during those long road trips!

That's why we want to know what you think about the cars you ride in for our BACKSEAT DRIVER reviews!

When you review a car for Roadster!, you're helping other kids and families pick the best rides. It’s all about being honest, sharing what you liked (or didn’t), and giving advice with a fun, friendly touch.

What is the make and model of the car you are reviewing? What year was it built?

Tell us why you are reviewing it (What has led to you writing the review? Perhaps it is your family car?)

Tell us a little about the car you are reviewing (Is it a family SUV? A cavernous estate car? A 7-seater? A sports car?)

What interesting facts can you tell us about the car? (You may have to do some research here. Ask an adult to help you find press releases and information about the car you are reviewing. Perhaps there is a fun configurator online?)

Backseat Driver - YOUR Opinion…

Are you sitting comfortably? Tell us whether the seats are comfortable, whether there is enough leg room. Would a child seat (and a child!) fit in the back?

What features are in the rear of the car? (Blinds? Reading lights? Arm rests? Cup holders? Device storage? Bottle bins? Storage? Reclining seats? Charging points?)

How practical are these features? Do they do the job or do you run into problems?

Tell us about the infotainment! Have you been allowed to play with it? Any cool features? How easy is it to operate?

Have you been for a ride in the car? What was that like as a passenger?

What are the things you like about the car?

Is there anything you dislike about the car?

Sum it all up! Would you recommend the car? Tell us why?

Your Rating… How many stars out of FIVE?

Want to see YOUR review in Roadster!?

Once you've answered these fun questions about the car you're reviewing, try writing your review using your own words!

If you send us your review—with some cool pictures of you and the car—we might publish it in Roadster! magazine. If we do, you’ll get a FREE copy with YOUR review inside!

And that’s not all...

If you write a few awesome reviews and we think you're a superstar, you could even join the ROADSTER! Kids Team!

Grab an adult and ask them to send your review and photos to: roadster.magazine@gmail.com

meets… GraCe WeBB!

Roadster! meets the presenter who proved machines aren’t just for grown-ups.

When Grace’s Amazing Machines first hit CBeebies, it was an instant hit with kids who loved engines, power, and wheels. But more than that, it was something new: a presenter who actually rode the motorbikes, drove the fire trucks, and jumped into the cab of a combine harvester — no stunt double required!

Grace is appearing all weekend at the British Motor Show. Roadster! had a quick chat with her all about Grace’s Amazing Machines!

Come meet Grace and watch her Green Gadget Show! on the Cazoo Kids Stage in Hall 1 throughout the weekend! (11am&3pm)

ROADSTER! What was the trickiest machine to rideordrive?

GRACE: The trickiest one I would say, was one called an E-Wake, which is like an electric surfboard! Youhadaremotecontrolinyourhand which meant it powered the board - you didn't needtowaitforawavelikearegularsurferwould do! So you had to have a lot of finesse with both your hands and your feet to to balance it and controlthespeed.

ROADSTER! What do you think the legacy of Grace’sAmazingMachinesis?

ROADSTER! Was there a machine that totally surprisedyou?

GRACE: The one that surprised me was a machine called a “Sea Breacher”, which basically looks like a metallicsharkthatyousatwithin.Thereweresomany controlsintermsofthethingsyoucouldpush, pull, and rotate.Therewasjoysticksthatyouhadtomoveinall directions that had buttons on them. Being able to drive might just be one of the greatest REAL superpowers, and YOU can give it a go too at The British Motor Show 2025…

Many kids are really excited to get into driving, and for good reason! No more waiting for buses or relying on grown-ups. You can visit friends in different towns, explore hidden places, and go on epic adventures!

But with great power comes great responsibility. The law says you can’t actually start to drive a car on public roads until you are aged 17. but before can be let loose you need to LEARN the knowledge, skills and attitude to be able to drive a car confidently and keep yourself and others safe.

The trouble is, for a young and inexperienced 17 year old who has never driven a car before, there is a LOT to suddenly have to start thinking about: how to control the car (like steering and braking); how to understand the road (like traffic lights, signs and road markings; special tricks (like parking without bumping anything!) how to drive on different types of roads; how to spot dangers; how to avoid BEING a danger,,, phew! The list goes on!

Lots of driving instructors think kids under 17 actually learn BETTER! Enthusiastic kids are like sponges, soaking up all the info about how cars work and how to be safe on the road.

Young Driver, is a company giving KIDS the chance to learn to drive a REAL CAR by providing driving experiences for children from the age of 10 in dual-controlled cars on private land. It uses UK Government approved driving instructors to provide children with responsible learning, in a fun, safe, and controlled environment… Young Driver isn’t about driving on busy streets - it's all about learning the basics in a safe & fun place!

Young Driver believe that giving children the chance to learn driving skills from an earlier age, will help to make them safer, more confident and more considerate drivers in the future. Young Driver is about helping children to develop the right driving attitudes through fun and safe hands-on experiences and lessons, giving them a head start before even applying for their provisional licence.

about pre-drive safety checks, and learn how to make the car go, steer, stop, speed up and slow down.

Group 2 - More advanced - you learn about judgement and control. Learning to stop, how big the car is, how close things are, how to position the car on the road and how to judge obstacles are covered.

Group 3 - Thinking like a driver. Learners drive on a road system with otherYoung Driver traffic. Drivers have to meet other traffic safely, cross the path of other cars and deal with any obstructions in the road.

Group 4 -This is about developing your control skills much more. It includes things like turning the car around, parking, and slalom challenges.

REAL car. It was the best day ever!”

Peter has already had follow up sessions. “It was a life changing experience” he says. ROADSTER! Highly recommends it!

YOUNG DRIVER’S SWIFT SHIFT!

Since this feature was written Young Driver has upgraded its fleet to 170 awesome new Suzuki Swifts!

No matter how you get there, the journey to school can often present a perilous gauntlet of obstacles and challenges for the bravest of adventurers!

In Issue 5, we provided a guide through the various dangers to help keep YOU safe on your journey to school! Here we summarise the various challenges to look out for!

CHALLENGE #1: CAR CHAOS!

School zones are full of cars, parked, moving, and everywhere in between! They can block footpaths and crossings, making it tricky to get around safely.

CHALLENGE #2: PARENTS IN A HURRY!

Grown-ups can be forgetful, stressed, or distracted, especially when rushing to drop you off or pick you up.

CHALLENGE #3: SPEEDY CARS!

School zones usually have slower speed limits to keep everyone safe. But some drivers ignore the rules!

CHALLENGE #4: THE SHORTCUT TRAP!

Crossings and safety barriers are there to keep you safe! Darting across the road to save time can be dangerous!

CHALLENGE #5: SLEEPING CARS!

Parked cars might seem safe, but they can zoom out or someone might open a door right into you!

CHALLENGE #6: BAD WEATHER BLUES! Rain, wind, or snow can make getting to school tricky.

CHALLENGE #7: DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL!

School rocks! Hanging with friends, fun lessons… But all that excitement can make you forget to be careful!

King Of The

Meet Sam, the eleven year old Editor-in-Chief of his own motoring magazine for children!

Sam is a fairly normal boy. He is part of a normal family and he goes to normal primary school. He likes to play with LEGO and play on his Nintendo Switch. He likes watching Minecraft videos on YouTube and he’s not a big fan of doing his homework. He does all of the normal things that normal boys do… it just happens that he is also in charge of a growing motoring magazine project!

Google Slides?

What made you decide to make a car magazine?

I wanted to do it because I couldn’t find a car magazine for kids. I thought I may as well try making one myself!

Did anything in particular inspire you?

I wanted to learn more about real cars. I liked watching Top Gear - they drove some really cool cars! A friend of mine (Richie) liked making comics and he inspired me to try something myself. I put the two ideas together!

How did you get started?

I just drew my idea on a piece of paper. I started drawing out my idea for a front cover and all of the things that I wanted in it. My Dad said it was really good so he helped me to put it onto Google slides.

Yes! When we started making Roadster! It was just for fun. We wanted to use something we could already access, and Dad said it was a good way for me to learn about things I might use in the future. We have since realised that we can share the templates with other families so that other kids can have a go too!

What is in a Roadster?

It can vary, but it’s always 36 pages and always full of content. There’s always a main feature about a cool car, visits, museums, road signs, jokes, an Eddy comic, games.

What’s it like making Roadster?

It’s fun! You get to go to so many places and do so many different things. Not many kids get to do that.

What are your favourite memories of making Roadster?

I have got to do so many amazing things! My favouites have to be going for a ride in an IVECO truck, taking a Polestar car on holiday to find out about EV’s, and getting to drive a real car with Young Driver!

What does your role of Editor involve?

I’m in charge! I actually do lots of different things - I talk to my Dad about my ideas and what I want to do with each issue. I really like the bits where we get out to do something. Dad usually introduces me, but then he lets me lead whatever it is we are doing.

I love getting hands-on with cars for my “Backseat Driver” reviews and taking photographs.

When we are making the actual magazine I get involved with designing and I do bits of writing. My favourite is checking everything and deciding if it is ok! If anyone sends anything for the magazine I read it and decide if I’m happy.

Do you have any favourite cars?

The Aston Martin DBS is my absolute favourite! I also like the Aston Martin DB5, I like the Volkswagen ID Buzz. It looks really nice! I’ve also sat in the Alpine A290 Beta - a cool concept sports car with the driving seat in the middle!

You’ve been making Roadster for nearly three years now?

What do you hope to achieve with it?

I make the magazine for me and my friends. I’m happy with that but lots of people have said we are doing something really good with Roadster! It would be good if other children could get involved too!

How can other children getinvolved?

Send us something! We want articles, drawings, photos. You can do Backseat Driver reviews of cars, make a car show out of toy cars.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ?

"Dad,whyisn'tthereamotoringmagazinejustfor kids?"

That spark ignited ROADSTER!

Kids are not just passengers. They're future drivers, engineers, innovators, and storytellers! Roadster! is a unique, grass-roots, high-quality magazine by kids, for kids.

We get kids INVOLVED!

We connect, educate, inspire, entertain, and involve young minds in the thrilling world of motoring. From real-world experiences to sharing their own adventures, kids build confidence, literacy, and vital skills.

Find us on our stand at the British Motor Show! Join the movement that's fueling the next generation of motoring enthusiasts.

This year we got involved in the fantastic “Scalextric 4 Schools” STEM learning contest. We provided micro-sponsorship to “Drift Dynamics Racing”, a Year 10 student team from The Bishops’ Blue Coat High School in Chester, helping them secure victory in the national finals!

The victory showcases how Roadster! empowers young people to discover their potential, take real ownership, and achieve extraordinary things!

Are you a kid who loves the road? Do you fancy getting to have a ride in a Ferrari or a Lamborghini supercar or a super cool classic? The Sporting Bears Motor Club can make your dream come true!

The Sporting Bears Motor Club, affectionately known as the Bears, is a vibrant community of classic, sports, and supercar enthusiasts with a heartwarming mission: raising money for children's charities through motoring events and experiences.

The Bears offer a Dream Ride® - you donate some money to charity, and in return they take you for a 20-minute spin in the car of your dreams! They have over 1,500 members, so there are tons of amazing cars to pick from!

The Sporting Bears rely on nice people who love cars to donate their time, fuel, and car care to make this happen. Because of that, all the money raised goes straight to helping kids!

Since 1989, they’ve raised over £3 million for UK children’s charities! This year the Bears are planning even more rides, cars, and of course, helping even more children! Keep an eye out for them at the Motor Show… maybe you'll get your dream ride too!

ROADSTER! meets a charity raising money for children’s charities by providing… Dream Rides®!

During the 2023 British Motor Show Roadster! Sam got to meet some of the Sporting Bears, have a walk around their paddock, and he was invited to sample some VERY cool cars!

Thanks to Michael De Sousa Macedo, Alan Moss, Andrew Lake for enabling this feature, and to the generous Sporting Bears members who we met and allowed Sam to experience their amazing cars!

Finish Line…

I included this set in my 2023 festive gift list… then I got it for Christmas myself!

LEGO Creator - 40750 “Land Rover Classic Defender”

Age 8 upwards 150 Pieces

This LEGO set is a LEGO creator set but it is similar to the Speed Champions sets but with less pieces. The Creator Classic Defender set is available exclusively from LEGO stores and celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Land Rover Classic Defender. It features features many details from the real life version, including the roof rack, headlights, Land Rover badge and side-view mirrors.

I REALLY like this LEGO set. Being smaller it was quick to build and is perfect for taking with me on my own off-road adventures!

It was not a super hard build, even though it has lots of cool details, just like a real Land Rover. My favorite parts are the boxy roof rack and the chunky off-road tires. There's even a driver minifig to put behind the wheel (though I have replaced it with a minifig of me!).

This Land Rover sits on my shelf alongside all of my LEGO Speed Champions sets.

If, like me, you think Land Rovers are great then you’ll like this set!

YOUR Postcard from…

We love nothing more than hearing from our readers! Why not send us a postcard from the show? Simply write your postcard, then get a parent to take a photo (of you as well) and send them to our email address. We’ll publish our favourites in the Winter issue of Roadster!

DISCLOSURE: This is a personal review by Sam The set was purchased with his pocket money!
