Mission Statement
As a Roman Catholic school, Rice Memorial High School exists to guide its students towards the realization of their God-given potential. Rice teaches students to recognize and develop their gifts by inspiring them to love learning, to serve others and to seek God through Jesus Christ and his Church.
Profile of Rice Memorial High School Founded: 1918 | Type of School: Catholic college preparatory 2022-2023 Tuition: $12,563
A letter from our Principal andrew nagy It’s been half a year since I started as Principal at Rice and every day I continue to be amazed and inspired by the spirit of the Rice community. When I came home from school one day, my two children, Veronika and Tess, were both singing songs from Stunt Nite - our ultimate community bonding event where everyone has a role. The sense of community at Stunt Nite is palpable and carries on in the hearts and souls of all the students who experience it. That’s what makes Rice such a special place - we create bonds that last a lifetime. I’m so proud to be a part of the school’s tradition and I’m also excited about all the opportunities the future holds. While I wasn’t at Rice last year, I do know that Rice was blessed with the generosity of many alumni, current and alumni parents, grandparents and friends. Our Advancement team happily reports the RiceCathedral Annual Fund goal of $450k was exceeded by raising $683k! Rice also passed a rigorous reaccreditation process by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and put together a three year strategic plan. Lastly, the school finished the year in a position of financial strength and is addressing facilities and maintenance concerns. The success of raising $683k provided many opportunities for our students who needed an extra boost of financial aid to attend Rice. Forty percent of our students at Rice receive some form of financial assistance. In addition, tuition doesn’t cover the total cost to educate a student; the annual fund helps fill in the $5k per student funding gap. While Advancement was busy fundraising, the Administrative team worked diligently on managing the NEASC authorization visit and later coming up with a comprehensive three year strategic plan. The plan highlights a continued focus on academic excellence; supporting faculty through professional development; restructuring teacher coaching; strengthening curriculum and expanding course offerings; exploring domestic/international admissions partnerships and creating more opportunities for student leadership. Along with the strategic plan, the school was buoyed by the support of the finance committee and finished the year in a position of financial strength. This allowed the school to plan for future improvements to school facilities that had been on hold. This is but a small sample of the incredible impact that our Rice community has made to ensure our students have the best Catholic education. We are so grateful for all who contribute to Rice! Generous gifts come in many forms whether it’s writing a check, volunteering your time, sharing good news or sending your prayers - we are appreciative and humbled by all your philanthropic gestures! We’re all so excited about what the future holds! Many thanks for your support of all things Rice!
FOUR PILLARS
Rice Memorial High School is a coeducational college preparatory, Catholic high school and has served the Burlington area for over 100 years. Our culture revolves around our four pillars:
Faith Service to Others Academic Excellence Community The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Vermont State Department of Education.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Rice's preparatory curriculum focuses on providing the skills necessary for students to be successful with the rigors of college and successful careers beyond Rice. Historically, over 90% of our students pursue postsecondary education. Rice students embody the pursuit of academic excellence. Rice has 16 honors classes and 16 AP classes. Rice is the only school in Chittenden County offering the prestigious Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma. This program fosters critical thinking and research skills that college admissions value. Rice is student centered in our approach to future planning and supports all pathways. The graduates of 2023 enrolled in four-year colleges, the Military, technical programs, junior hockey and some continued their education in their country of citizenship.
SERVICE TO OTHERS
Students at Rice are required to perform over 80 hours of community service between their freshman and senior year. By placing the needs of others ahead of themselves, students develop valuable experience and learn immeasurable lessons about their place in the world. Our Campus Ministry office facilitates much of this service activity, providing opportunities for community involvement at organizations such as ANEW Place, AGEWELL, COTS, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington and many more.
FAITH
Rice's students and their families embrace our mission to love learning, seek God and to serve others. It is weaved into every aspect of life at Rice and reflected in the character our students develop and how they carry themselves inside and outside of school. Our foundation is built on kindness, respect and trust. Each day begins with a moment of silence, a reading from the Bible and Rice's mission prayer. The school gathers for Mass, sacraments, and prayer at least once a month. In keeping with the importance of faith, all students engage in the Catholic intellectual tradition through religion classes, engaged by teachers who meet each student wherever they are at on their journey of faith.
COMMUNITY
Rice offers a nurturing and caring learning environment where students make connections that last a lifetime. Stunt Nite is just one example of how students leave the classroom and collaborate with the community. At Rice, community is a way of life. With nearly 400 students -- nearly 1/3 the size of most public local high schools -- a sense of belonging is established quickly. Small classes allow teachers an opportunity to really know their students.
I donate to Rice so that more students can receive the same education I was blessed to have --one that prepared me for college, helped me discover my gifts, and encouraged me to share them with the world.” -Jack Lyons ‘17

One of the best ways to ensure Rice's future is to become a member of the Legacy Society. The Legacy Society recognizes those in our community who have chosen to ensure that Rice Memorial High School continues to provide a Catholic education for the young men and women of Vermont through naming Rice Memorial High School in their will as an estate gift. For more information on designating Rice in your will, life insurance or annuities, please contact Nancy Viner or Debby Rolland in the Advancement Office at 802862-6521.

the rice-cathedral fund giving levels Like all private schools and colleges, tuition does not cover the total cost to educate each student. To keep Rice affordable, we discount tuition by 30% for all students. The RiceCathedral Fund helps close this funding gap and supports every aspect of the Rice experience. In addition to bridging this gap, this fund helps provide tuition assistance to qualifying families. Consistently, almost 40% of Rice students qualify for tuition assistance.
