A Message to

Spring 2016 Graduates from CSU President Tony Frank The occasion is piled high with “ difficulty, and so we must rise with the occasion. As our situation is new, we must think anew and act anew

” .

Dear Graduates, Congratulations on your upcoming commencement! Your achievement comes as a result of years of hard work, long hours, and a persistent focus on this goal – so now is truly your time to celebrate. This is a great occasion for you and for Colorado State University, so on behalf of the all the faculty, staff, and alumni of CSU, I just want to say that we are enormously proud of you and what you’ve accomplished. While this may mark an end to one chapter of your life, it also marks the beginning of the next – and there is good reason to be optimistic about what is to come. Countless financial analysts continue to demonstrate that a college degree ultimately has a greater payoff than a similar investment in the stock market. The Brookings Institution calculates the return on investment on a student loan at 15 percent annually. College

graduates earn on average $1 million more over their working lives than people without a bachelor’s degree. In other words, you’ve made a great investment in yourself and your future. But you can’t measure the value of a college degree in economic terms alone. During your time at Colorado State, you’ve faced up to new challenges and experiences. You probably had some classes you can barely remember and others that transformed the way you think about the world. The person you were when you first came to CSU may seem very different to you from the person you are today – and the person you will become as you go one with your life and put your education to work. After all, the most important payoff from your investment of time and money is what you actually do with the skills, knowledge and credentials you’ve acquired at Colorado State. Our world needs you – your ideas, your passion,

and your commitment. The world is waiting for you. We have problems that need fixing. How do we feed a world whose population is expected to grow to 9 billion in the decades ahead? How do we safely and sustainably meet the world’s energy needs? How do we combat the rapid spread of disease in a world that seems to get smaller day by day? How do we move beyond the divisions and “isms” that hold us back and find the common ground that will allow our society and our world to move forward? How do we help instill hope and a sense of real potential in younger generations that see these challenges coming their way? As educated women and men, these challenges are now yours. The solutions won’t be easy or obvious – if they were, my own generation would have solved these problems a long time ago. But I have full confidence that those solutions are within your reach.

CSU was founded nearly 150 years ago, thanks to a signature from President Abraham Lincoln that authorized the creation of Land Grant universities. (I couldn’t pass up one last chance to pass on a Lincoln quote to you.) On December 3, 1863, in his now famous annual address to Congress, he spoke these words: “The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and so we must rise with the occasion. As our situation is new, we must think anew and act anew.” You are leaving CSU to venture off into the new – and that path is yours to clear and build. Your graduation is, indeed, a beginning. Make the most of it, and take on your future with a sense of optimism and the confidence that you’ve made an outstanding investment in your future. Congratulations again to the outstanding graduates of the Class of 2016! Dr. Tony Frank President

5th generation Ram graduates in the class of 2016 Graduating from CSU is a rewarding accomplishment for any student, but coming from a family of numerous past CSU grads makes it even more special. Julie Williams, a graduating senior in the class of 2016 comes from a long line of CSU graduates. Williams’ grandmother wrote her a letter explaining the history of the graduates from each generation. It all started with Williams’ great-greatgreat grandmother and grandfather who settled in Fort Collins, Colo. on their way to California in 1862. The couple decided to stay in Fort Collins to raise their six children – 4 of whom attended the university. Their daughter, Elizabeth Coy, was the first to graduate (then called Colorado Agricultural College) in 1884. According to the letter, Elizabeth Coy was the first woman graduate at the college. Elizabeth Coy married Professor James W. Lawrence who was the head of the mechanical engineering department for 50 years. Elizabeth and James had one son, George Coy Lawrence, who also attended the college and graduated in his father’s department. Frances Coy, also the daughter of John and Emily Coy, attended the college for 2

years and then left to become a seamstress. John and Emily’s son, also named John, married Nina Ingersoll, the daughter of the president of the college, Charles L. Ingersoll. Another son of John and Emily’s, Burgess Coy, attended the college and got his degree in Engineering. Frances Coy (Hoffman) had 2 children, Lydia Hoffman and Milton Coy Hoffman. Both Lydia and Milton attended the college; Lydia graduated in 1916 and Milton graduated in 1918. Lydia majored in Home Economics (now known as Applied Human Sciences). She was invited to the 100th anniversary of the department in 1993 and attended as the guest of honor. The family later started a scholarship in her name (Lydia Hoffman Morrison) and a scholarship is given every year to a student in the department. Milton Coy Hoffman had one son, James Porter Hoffman, who graduated from CSU in 1945. Michel P. Williams, Julie’s father, graduated from CSU in 1986. From Aggies to Rams, the next in the family to graduate is Julie Williams, representing the 5th generation of CSU graduates in her family. Congratulations Julie and thanks for sharing your family’s story.

Elizabeth Coy (Lawrence) - 1884 George Coy Lawrence Lydia Anne Hoffman – 1916 and Milton Coy Hoffman - 1918

James Porter Hoffman - 1945 Michel P. Williams - 1986 Julie Anne Williams - 2016

Editor’s note: Like Humans of New York’s “daily glimpses into the lives of strangers on the streets,” Humans of CSU tells the stories of the people who populate our campus. Written by Collegian staff and told in first person from the subject’s point of view, this series aims to make each individual on campus relatable.

I feel like college has changed me so much in a lot of really beautiful, beautiful ways–all ways that I’m very happy with. I think I’ve definitely grown a lot as a person and become more able to recognize my flaws, but at the same time, become much more confident in who I am and what I want to do and how I hold myself. I love it here (in Fort Collins). It was the best decision ever. I started out here and I lived in a Live Green community my freshman year, so it was a bunch of sustainability-minded students living on a floor together. Three of the people I live with now are three of the people I lived with on that hall. They’re like my best friends in the entire world. I started off in Fort Collins with this really strong community, and I love that you can go to a school of 30,000, but you can make it. You can find those best friends who have similar interests. I think it’s really unique to be able to find such beautiful, loving communities that just want to support you and help you grow. I volunteered as a cultural mentor and I still technically do, so I did that for three years at the end of May, working with international students who are partnered with graduate students who are coming from foreign countries. We email with them over the summer and then we help with orientation and plan activities. I’ve done salsa nights and a Valentine’s party. Most of my international friends are from India. Most of my friends are from Maharashtra, so they speak Marathi. Krutheeka, she’s from south India, so she speaks Telugu, and Tamil, I think. I have a fair amount of Ugandan friends from studying abroad in Uganda, and here I’ve met a bunch of different Africans. Hanna is one of them. I consider her one of my closest friends. Despite the fact that she’s like 24 years older than me, she’s one of my absolute best friends. I came in (to Raska) like two years ago, my sophomore year. I just started asking a lot of

14 Graduation Guide | May 2016

questions. (Hanna) and I were talking about it the other day, and she was like, “I’ll never forget when I met you for the first time,” because I just apparently sat there, and I remember I said, “Where are you from? Why are you doing this?” I kind of got a very brief version of her life story while I was sitting there, and she was like, “I never forgot you.” I was really interested in what she was doing and why she was here. I think people’s stories are interesting. But then I just kept coming back over the last few years. With my parents, she’d be like, “Your daughter is the light of the city. She should run for president,” and all these funny things. Just last semester, I started coming in pretty regularly. I came in once and just sat for like five hours and she told me a lot more about herself and we just became friends. I started volunteering and now I’m working here. I have a family at Raska. It’s more than a place I work. It’s my family. I just like learning about people. I think it’s so much fun. You know everyone has these ridiculous, cool, awesome stories that you would never know without talking to them. I think why I really like meeting people is you just learn so much about different people. It’s almost like travelling. If you meet somebody new and they have all these different experiences, even if they’re from the same state as you or the same city or go to the same school, everyone is themselves because of different things that have happened to them. I think it’s really interesting to learn about those. Most (CSU) international students are either Saudi, Indian or Chinese. And most of the cultural mentors I work with through that program are either American or Indian. Amol and I have gone salsa dancing every Tuesday for like two years, and so we’ve taken a group of international students either three or four times to teach them how to dance, which has been super fun because it’s such a mixture of cultures, like so many different layers. (You’re in) Fort Collins, then you go salsa dancing where you’ve got that Latin, and then the Indian cultural mentor that’s teaching a bunch of Chinese students–it’s just a lot of cultural layers, which is fun. We got to see that you can just do something together and you’re all the same, even though you’re really different. I think (of all) my travels, like when I went to

Bangladesh in 2012–that was really pivotal. That was high school. It was a program funded through the U.S. Department of State hosted by a nonprofit that chose 30 youth to go, so that was really lifechanging. I think Uganda was very pivotal in what I want to do long-term and what I want to do after graduation. I think without that experience, I’d be a lot more lost. (I’m majoring in) economics with minors in international development studies and global environmental sustainability….I started off being very interested in the environment and sustainability, and I still am and I still think it’s important, but I think my passions have most definitely shifted more toward social sustainability and the humanity sides of issues. I’m really interested in public health issues, specifically reproductive health and maternal health for women. Even more specifically, I think sexual health education is really important and really not emphasized enough anywhere in the world. I’d like to do stuff with sex ed in the States, or I think in sub-Saharan Africa—there’s also a bunch of other reproductive health issues there. I’m also interested in HIV/AIDS and access to contraception, which I suppose goes with sex ed, but it basically all comes down to reproductive health. But it’s not in my degree by any means. My public health interest comes from studying abroad in Africa, in Uganda. I was sick there so much. I had malaria, and then had four or five rounds of antibiotics for other issues that went with that, so I spent a lot of time at the hospitals. For part of the program, we did public health, so I got to visit hospitals and learn about different (non-governmental organizations) doing aid relief. I met a few people in the group that were really passionate about public health. I read Tracy Kidder’s book about Paul Farmer, “Mountains Beyond

Mountains” I read that in Uganda, and so that was also a very pivotal point. I thought that was really interesting. It just really got me excited. What I love about travelling, and not even travelling, but living in foreign places … it pushes you out of your comfort zone, it forces you to be independent, realize your flaws, realize your strengths and deal with them. At the same time … you can just feel the humanity in the world. You have faith in humanity because you’re travelling alone, and I have met so many amazing people in India and Uganda just because I was there. If you want to talk to a friend and you don’t have a friend because you’re travelling alone, you have to either talk to somebody or not. It really forces you, I think, to really grow as a person. Bangladesh taught me that, Uganda reinforced it. It’s just something that I continue to try to strive to do: push myself outside of that comfort zone so that I can grow. Otherwise, you’re not going to. You’re never going to grow if you’re comfortable, I don’t think. I grew up with a really strong support system– very outgoing, loud, funny, gregarious family–so I think that even when I was shy as a kid, it was something I was surrounded by–people who are smart and funny and caring and passionate. Then I was bullied in seventh grade pretty badly… But I think that (also) ultimately really made me who I am, because I really did have to learn what being alone was like and how to stand up for myself. Then I joined the debate team in high school. That got me really interested in being smart, a smart girl. They told me, “I want to become a powerful, smart woman when I grow up,” and that’s what I want to be. Collegian Staff can be reached at socialmedia@ collegian.com.

A Year in Review: Top trends of Song/Video: Ylvis “What Does the Fox Say” A pair of norwegian brothers got this ridiculous song stuck in our heads because it seemed to be constantly playing throughout 2013. The video came out in September 2013 and now has over 590 million views as of April 2016. Did we ever actually find out what the fox says?

2013

So what was the Word of the Year?? Selfie Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and every other social media app has fueled the selfie phenomenon. Whether you like the high angles or the mirror selfies, chances are you spent a lot of your time in 2013 taking pictures of yourself. According to Samsung, selfies make up 30% of the photos taken by people aged 18–24.

Song/video: The Harlem Shake Admit it: You either made one of these videos, or watched them constantly during 2013. Nobody can resist jumping up and dancing wildly when that beat drops. The video went viral in February 2013. By April, thousands of videos had been uploaded with over 1.21 billion views in total. The song also reached #1 on Itunes.

Song/video: Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball video You either love her or you hate her, but you can’t deny that Miley Cyrus made quite a statement in 2013. Who can forget the day the Wrecking Ball music video came out and the world saw Miley swinging naked from a giant wrecking ball. If the hair chopping and the VMAs charade didn’t showcase her transformation enough, this video surely did. The video was released in August 2013, and broke the Vevo record for the most views in the first 24 hours with an astonishing 19.3 million views. It also won Video of the Year at the 2014 VMAs and World’s Best Video at the 2014 World Music Awards.

Dance craze: Twerking Miley also introduced us to 2013’s most popular dance craze: Twerking. Even though the dance move has been around for years, it became insanely popular in 2013. If you don’t know what twerking is, (what cave have you been living in?), it is a sexually provocative dance move where you stick your butt out and shake it all around - it’s all in the hips and the booty. Twerking is popular in hip hop music videos. Miley Cyrus is known for flaunting her twerking skills at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Also, the word ‘twerking’ was the runner-up in the Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year in 2013.

20 Graduation Guide | May 2016

Another popular word that entered our vocabulary in 2013 was YOLO Ah yes, the acronym you love to hate. YOLO, in case you didn’t know, means You Only Live Once! This motto was popularized in 2013 by the rapper Drake. It sounds cool when he says it, not so much when we say it. The phrase has been overused, but ultimately it has a positive message. People started saying it as a way to remember to live life to the fullest and take chances while you can. However, there was also a lot of criticism that the phrase was promoting reckless behavior. YOLO responsibly everyone.

Moment in CO history: Colorado Amendment 64. Marijuana became legal in the Mile High state. I’ll be blunt: there is no need to weed through the facts on this one. Just ask your buds! Whether you do it or pot, I mean not, personal use of marijuana became a legal option for those over the age of 21. At first you couldn’t, but now you CANnabis.

Dating in College By: Lexi Elio The stereotype of college hasn’t changed in a while – irresponsible kids looking to party and barely pass class. The ‘hook-up culture’ created in recent years has done nothing to dispel this wild, carefree conception of college-aged kids. Many students, however, choose to defy this perception of young promiscuity. Seniors Amanda Fairbanks and Christian Fahrenbruck just celebrated their two-year anniversary on May 16. They met in their residence hall freshman year and romance blossomed out of friendship later on. After graduation, the couple hopes to stay close to one another while Fairbanks attends medical school and Fahrenbruck enters the workforce. While navigating this transition can be difficult, Fairbanks said, “The key is to make sure you have a solid support group, enjoy the time, and remember what your priorities are.” Seniors Kaeli Simonet and Dillon Loaiza have been together for four years and recently took their commitment to the next level – marriage. According to USA today, 28 percent of adult spouses attended the same college. The husband and wife shared similar advice for relationship longevity. “Don’t be afraid to talk about absolutely everything,” Loaiza said. “Don’t be afraid to change a little, either. It’s ridiculous to think that sharing your life with another human being will not change who you are.”

30 Graduation Guide | May 2016

Loaiza says the transition means their relationship’s dynamic will likely stay similar, although he hopes full-time jobs will align their schedules more than was possible when working around classes. “We are hoping to do a lot of adventuring

and traveling as time goes on,” Simonet said. When you spend years in a relationship with someone, you get to know all their habits, good and bad. Both couples maintain their romantic relationship with quirky inside jokes. Simonet

and Loaiza bargain with tickling seconds and enjoy hammocking by the lagoon. “We both love Thai food and that’s what we usually pick for date night. We’ve been to every one in Fort Collins,” Fairbanks said. “For a while, we even kept a spreadsheet rating each place on a bunch of different factors.” Sometimes, the thing one person in the relationship hates is often what the other will come to love. While Fahrenbruck lamented that Fairbanks is scared of spiders and makes him trek all the way to her apartment to kill them, she listed that as one of the things she loves about him, in addition to genuinely wanting to help the people around him and never backing down from a challenge. Simonet sums up dating in college by saying, “enjoy each other and have fun.”

I wanted to get out of Europe and then just try somewhere new. The Natural Resources department — there’s nothing really similar to it in Europe, so I was like, “I’m going to have to go to somewhere bigger than the schools we have back home.” Then I was looking into it, and my dad’s colleague actually went to CSU, so he loved it and raved about it. I ended up applying and then got in, which was great. It was definitely crazy. I had never been to Colorado before, so it was nerve-wracking for sure. But it turned out to be a pretty solid decision. I’d do it again. As spoiled as this is going to sound, I was very fortunate in that I got to travel a lot, and so I’d seen most of the countries and I just wanted to try something that was very different and get a bit of a culture shock. I don’t do well being stagnant. Even my bedroom — I’ve got to at least move my bed every semester because I’m just like, “Something needs to change.” There’s definitely added challenges about not having any close family close-by. Everybody’s at least an eight- or ninehour flight away, which is definitely nerve-wracking. After 4 in the afternoon, I can’t really call my parents anymore because they’re in bed and they would not be happy because of the time difference. Sometimes, it is bad and it’s terrible and you’re like, “I just want to go home and I just want to be in a living room that I know is mine.” I think that’s also made friendships stronger in some cases. Even with kids who don’t necessarily go and see their family every weekend, even they can relate to it. It’s nice being able to talk to people about it. Especially then when you meet somebody else who’s not from America in general, you’re just like, “You totally understand what (I) mean when I say this.” I go home every Christmas for about a month. Summer is always iffy. I get to go back more than a lot of people I know who aren’t from here, which is really nice. One of my biggest issues is probably that I don’t really know where I want to be, which is kind of a nice issue just because I do have that flexibility in just that I’m pretty open to going to anywhere I fit if the opportunity presents itself. It has definitely made the post-graduate plans a little difficult just because you can’t be like, “Oh, yeah, I’ll just look for jobs in this area.” I’m definitely going home for a little bit, and then hoping

32 Graduation Guide | May 2016

to do one of the longer hiking trails in Scotland. If I can convince my mum to do it with me, that would be great, but we’ll have to see. Just go hang out with family for a bit that I obviously haven’t been able to see as often because you never see them all. Eventually, if I can decide to settle down somewhere, do that if I don’t find another adventure to go to. It’s pretty much up in the air. I’ve been pretty nonchalant about it, considering that it’s a month away. Some days, I’m really stressed about it, and then other days, I’m just like, “Oh, I’ll figure it out.” I’m definitely going to take a break. I plan on finding a job practically straight away when I go back, but it’s not

going to be something that I’m going to be sitting in for awhile. Long-term, I think getting into water quality and water sustainability would be very cool. If I could be able to do project-based stuff and do some travel, that would be pretty ideal. Both of my parents work for the UN, so doing

something for the United Nations environmental program or developmental program would also be very cool, but again, that all depends on budget and skill level. Collegian Staff can be reached at socialmedia@collegian.com.

A Year in Review: Top trends of Most popular word: Bae Remember when this became a thing? Bae means “before anyone else.” It is a term of endearment that millennials like to call their significant other. In 2014, the word ‘Bae’ was used in 20% of American’s text messages. Will this trend stick around? Who knows what you’ll be calling your boo in the coming years.

Another popular word sliding into our vocab? Turnt

2014

Viral Video: The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Perhaps you still have frostbite from pouring a bucket of ice water on your head in 2014 to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The challenge became a viral phenomenon in summer 2014. More than 17 million people posted ice bucket challenge videos, including thousands of celebrities. These videos wracked up over 10 billion views. It was worth putting ourselves through that for a great cause.

OK, who came up with this one? Here is a word-for-word definition of the word ‘Turnt’ in Urban Dictionary: “The most wonderful feeling in the world. Saught after by the biggest bosses and ballers, it can only be achieved when all 5 senses are stimulated to their fullest extent. The links between these senses cause the human brain to experience supernatural side effects, thus creating, the only way to reach maximum swag.” Well...there you have it. Maximum swag indeed.

Most popular men’s fashion trend: Man buns You either love them or you hate them. Man buns appeared upon the heads of millions of men in 2014. It’s exactly like it sounds: Men started growing out their hair and pulling it up into a bun. Who knows how or why this trend blew up in 2014, but nevertheless, there was a lot of hair going on that year.

Most popular movie of the year: Frozen Although the movie came out in late 2013, people didn’t stop talking about it and singing the songs for pretty much all of 2014. The icy disney movie filled us with a magical sensation and we can’t seem to let it go. The movie is the ninth highest-grossing film of all time and the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It’s also the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures release. It made a whopping $110 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Most powerful celebrity of the year: The queen Bey herself...BEYONCE! Beyonce ruled the world in 2014. Well, she does that every year, but especially in 2014. After releasing a surprise album in December of 2013, the world couldn’t stop talking about her, listening to her and watching her music videos for all of 2014. Her last album, self-titled Beyonce, was a full audio-visual album that had short films/long-form music videos released with every song. If that isn’t the definition of brilliance, I don’t know what is. The album sold 828,773 copies worldwide in the first three days, making it the fastest-selling album in iTunes history. Plus, there was no prior announcement or promotion for the album before it was released. That just proves that Beyonce is, was, and always will be the queen.

A Year in Review: Top trends of Social media trend: The dresswhite and gold or blue and black? Remember that time when someone posted a picture of a dress and everyone lost their minds? Did you see blue and black or white and gold? Are your eyes really deceiving you or is it just a cruel joke? During the first week that the dress appeared, more than 10 million tweets mentioned the dress. Luckily, we all survived #dressgate 2015.

2015

Viral trend: Left shark, Katy Perry super bowl halftime show Poor left shark. He couldn’t get himself together and we all found it so entertaining. In case you have no idea who left shark is, here’s an explanation. Katy Perry performed at the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show in 2015. She had a beach theme, typical Katy Perry, and there were people dressed as sharks dancing behind her. While the shark on the right was on point dancing along to Teenage Dream, the shark on the left went rogue and was all over the place with his improvised moves. If only that guy knew he was going to become a viral phenomenon.

Video/song: Drake’s dancing in Hotline Bling Drake taught us some interesting new dance moves in 2015 with his music video for Hotline Bling. Not only did his moves makes us laugh, but it also inspired the funniest memes, gifs and parody videos ever. The video now has almost 700 million views. You know you’ve been trying to copy those drizzy moves in the club.

Song/video: ADELE’s Hello Hello...it’s ADELE. In 2015, she came back onto the music scene and let the world know it by releasing her single, Hello. This song blew up and broke so many records! It was the first song to sell over a million digital copies in a week. The video broke a record by receiving 27.7 million views in 24 hours -- a record previously held by Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood video with 20.1 million views.

Dance craze: Silento’s watch me whip/nae nae Watch me whip...now watch me nae nae. The biggest dance craze of 2015 blew up when Silento taught us the whip and the nae nae. Oh, and don’t forget about the Stanky legg too. The song was nominated as the Song of the Summer at the 2015

Social trend: Netflix and Chill Only the millennial generation can take a simple and innocent phrase and turn it into something that basically means ‘booty call.’ This generation coined the term ‘hookup

culture’ and has completely redefined romantic relationships with the rise of dating apps and websites. With netflix rising in popularity right alongside us, it was only a matter of time before we combined the two.

I was a senior in high school and I applied for a scholarship program to study less commonly-taught languages in the country where they’re spoken. I was selected for it, and when I got to Russia, I didn’t know a lick of Russian at all. I could say “yes” and “no,” and that was it. I was placed in a host family, and they didn’t speak any English, which made things interesting. It was definitely a very immersive experience. It was definitely overwhelming, but I think it forced me to use people skills to make up for the language barrier. My host sister invited me to her wedding in 2013 and I thought, “When would I have the chance to go to a Russian wedding again?” That was pretty special, so I decided one day I was going to go. I’ve kept in touch with my host family and we Skype sometimes, so I hope to get to see them the next time I go. I studied abroad in St. Petersburg in the fall 2014 semester, and I went without having a program, but I enrolled in an international relations program at St. Petersburg State University. I was one of three Americans in the program, so it was a great opportunity to continue that people-to-people relationship, and represent the U.S. to people. For a lot of Russians, I was the first American they had ever met. Meeting the people is really (impacting) because as Americans, we have so many stereotypes about Russians, and I think just getting to meet the people in the country was a great way to break down those stereotypes. The stereotype of Russians being kind of cold on the exterior is true, but it’s just on the exterior. Once you get to meet them and they invite you into their lives more, they open up and they’re so warm. Once you’ve made friends with a Russian, you’re their friend for life and they’ll do anything for you. I think the fact that I was pursing languages stood out to them. The fact that I cared about international stuff blew them away. I got the Critical Language Scholarship, which I was not expecting. I was very happy because graduating is always scary, and I didn’t know what I was doing, so

when I got that email, I was really happy. I’ll be going to Russia to a town called Nizhny Novgorod. It’s a smaller town than St. Petersburg. It’s about 250 (miles) east of Moscow. I will be going there with a group of other students from across the country who are learning Russian at various college levels. I’m really excited to go because I went on the high school version of this trip when I had just graduated high school, and so now it has come full circle and I

can go again when I’ve graduated college and see how much I’ve progressed after taking Russian here. It’s a whole different part of Russia, so I’m excited to learn

the nuances, figure out the differences and get more familiar with the country, as well as getting better at the language. Collegian Staff can be reached at socialmedia@ collegian.com.
