Best Be of CSU 2017 - 2018

Welcome F

ort Collins is a town full of incomprehensible beauty and incomparable charm. Many of the places featured in this edition of Best of CSU are near-and-dear to my heart, as they are to many other CSU students, faculty, and staff. This town and its community thrives in concert with our university, and it is my honor and privilege to put together a piece of work that celebrates the successes and relationships between CSU and the Fort Collins community. It has been a pleasure working with each artist, business owner, community member, and Rocky Mountain Student Media member that contributed to what has been one of my favorite projects here at CSU. It is through these symbiotic relationships that we produce such fun work and inspiring experiences throughout our time in this town. I’d like to give a special thank you to my creative team. It was a pleasure working with such amazing and grounded artists as yourselves. You continually inspire my own art and challenge me to better my craft day in and day out. Thank you for helping me represent some of CSU’s favorite aspects of Fort Collins in such a gorgeous light.

Best Coffee Shop

Alleycat Coffee House T

he Alley Cat’s 24/7 service and warm cozy atmosphere are what make it our pick for best coffee shop. We’ve got just the thing you need if you’re looking for a new drink to try at the Alley Cat. 1. Red Eye Cat: For those who love the best of both worlds, the Red Eye Cat is made up of house chai and two shots of espresso. 2. Pink Panther Latte: Satisfy your sweet-tooth with this delectable white chocolate and raspberry latte. 3. Chai: We highly recommend any variation: sweet, spiced, or shake, they are all amazing! 4. Shot in the Dark: If you’ve been procrastinating the semester away, these will come in handy during crunch time. The Shot in the Dark is a highly caffeinated powerhouse drink that will get you through the roughest of study times. 5. Drip Coffee: If you’re stuck to the college budget that we are all familiar with, the Alley Cat’s drip coffee is a great way to get your coffee fix while saving a buck or two.

Best Breakfast

Silver Grill Cafe

T

he Silver Grill Cafe is a long-standing Fort Collins tradition that no CSU experience is complete without. The Silver Grill first opened its doors in 1933, but its roots in Fort Collins stretch back even further. The history of the “Grill” traces back about 105 years to 1912, when it was known as UneedaLunch Cafe. The business was located on 212 Walnut Street in Old Town and owned by Charlie Liggett and Chink Brown. Over the century, the restaurant changed ownership several times until it was sold to John Arnolfo and Mike Gress in 1979. Arnolfo still owns the restaurant, and has expanded upon it over the years. In 1990, the Silver Grill acquired its third and fourth buildings, and then a fifth in 1996. In the summer of 2000, the kitchen was remodeled and the restroom area was renovated. Come the spring of 2003, the Silver Grill added a back outdoor patio. Throughout its additions, Arnolfo has truly instilled love into his business.

seating in the warmer months, and cuddle up with complimentary coffee while you wait for your seat in the colder months. The restaurant is a go-to for award-winning traditions like the giant cinnamon roll, which they sell more than 10,000 of each month. On the weekends, they host the Build Your Own Bloody Mary Bar, deemed Fort Collins Bloody Mary Bar Champion, featuring over 50 pickled relishes. If bloody mary isn’t your beverage of choice, they’ve got a selection of delectable seasonal cocktails to try out. To pay the Silver Grill a visit is to pay tribute to a special long-standing history in Fort Collins. They’re still serving up heaping portions of customer favorites that are easy on the college budget. Cinnamon roll french toast, eggs benedict, and daily and seasonal specials such as the peaches and cream pancakes are on Best of CSU’s list of must-tries at our choice for best breakfast.

Throughout the seasons, the Silver Grill has dining covered. Enjoy outdoor patio

Best Vegetarian

Avogadro’s Number A

vogadro’s Number has a unique charm all its own. The restaurant features walls adorned in giant murals and macrame art, and a menu with options for all types of customers. Avo’s is our favorite go-to for a delicious vegetarian dish. We recommend their 100% organic tempeh, made in house. Every Tuesday is Tempeh Tuesday at Avo’s, where you can snag 2-for-1 tempeh burgers. Vegetarian should also try the savory Lizzie veggie sandwich which features grilled marinated mushrooms, banana peppers, black olives, melted swiss, tomato, avocado, house dressing and a hot baguette.

10

Avo’s offers a stacked concert lineup year-round. This season’s includes performances by pop-folk songwriter Danielle Ate the Sandwich and jazz band the Poudre River Irregulars. Grateful Dead inspired dead jam nights are a monthly occurrence, and you can catch open mic nights and bluegrass jam nights weekly. Best Burgers

Stuft Burger Bar W

hat better way to celebrate a CSU Ram victory than going out for burgers with the crew? STUFT is our pick to satisfy all burger cravings. If you’re not feeling creative enough to craft your own masterpiece at STUFT, here are a couple unique options you’ve got to try. The Hangover: Stuft’s breakfast burger served up hot on a warm glazed donut. They call it, ‘the best thing to happen to the donut since the hole’. The Chile Relleno burger: This is a relatively new creation from the Chef. It’s a full size chile relleno on top of a juicy burger. Not a meat-eater? No problem! Stuft has vegetarian and vegan options, too.

Best Pizza

Krazy Karl’s Pizza N

o surprises here, Krazy Karl’s takes the best pizza category yet again. Perhaps it’s the phenomenal cream cheese topping, the close location to campus, the flavorful specialty pizza options or the impressive daily deals that inspire us to keep Krazy Karl’s so close to our hearts. We say try the Beat the Clock special on Mondays and Thursdays, where the time you call is the total you pay for a large one-topping pizza.

Best Ice Cream

Walrus Ice Cream B

est of CSU’s favorite ice cream shop, Walrus Ice Cream, has a spooky past and far-back roots with CSU.

Charlie Dinneback, Warlus Ice Cream’s in-house ghost, was an active member of the Fort Collins community and backed the Colorado Aggie’s football team. Visit the shop on 125 W. Mountain Ave. to learn the full ghost story, and to try a myriad of delicious flavors, including an odd flavor of the day. They’re even open late, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., so you can swing by for a quick indulgent treat before bed.

Best College Bar

utton up your flannels, because The Trailhead Tavern is our choice for best bar. A Warner College favorite, you’ll fit right in at Trailhead in a nice pair of jeans and your best outdoor sandals. Best Brewery

New Belgium Brewing W

ith this year’s new collaborations between New Belgium Brewing and CSU, it’s a no-brainer that New Belgium would make our first pick for best brewery. This summer was a big one for New Belgium and CSU with the release of the Old Aggie Superior Lager in July and the New Belgium Porch at the new CSU Stadium in August. The packaging for the Old Aggie Superior Lager features an artistic rendition of the ram mascot in a vintage color scheme celebrating CSU’s agricultural history and tradition. The all-malt lager is light-bodied with hints of citrus and lemon, making it

the perfect gameday refresher for rams. CSU will receive a portion of the proceeds from sales of Old Aggie Superior Lager. Proceeds will be divided equally between CSU’s Fermentation Science and Technology Program, CSU Athletics, and alcohol awareness and education efforts for CSU students. The New Belgium Porch at the new CSU Stadium serves up ice-cold Old Aggie and other New Belgium craft beers from the tap on game days.

Best Margarita

The Rio

L

ove tequila? You’re going to want to try what we’ve deemed the best margarita at the Rio Grande. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you’ll want to snag a tequila passport, the Rio’s way of teaching us the wonders of tequila across Mexico. For each tequila you try, you’ll get a stamp in your passport, all adding up to the chance for a trip to Mexico. Don’t forget to mention College Night on Thursdays for $4 margaritas. ither you’ve lived at Ram’s Village or you know someone who has. There are plenty of things that make Ram’s Village a classic CSU favorite. Best Boutique

Kansas City Kitty T

o celebrate Kansas City Kitty’s 15th anniversary, we met up with store owner, Christie Wolf Guthrie to learn about Best of CSU’s favorite boutique.

Best of CSU: KCK changed management recently, why the change and how is KCK adapting?

to head out on a new adventure and move closer to family. I feel blessed for the time that we had together and for what we created. I am excited for the challenges that being a solo owner will bring. I have the support of an unbelievable staff that I can count on for anything. We are truly like family. I want to continue focusing on what makes our shop special and keeps our customers coming back. We have amazing customer service and offer lots of unique and local items that you can’t find anywhere else in town.

Christie: The change was due to Trista Price leaving Colorado

Best of CSU: What new and exciting things does KCK have

Best of CSU: What is the meaning behind the boutique’s name, ‘Kansas City Kitty’? Christie: Kansas City Kitty was named after a character from a 1941 Looney Tunes cartoon named We, The Animals Squeak!!

38

to look forward to this year? Christie: The word revival keeps coming to mind. I feel inspired and look forward to spreading my wings. Kansas City Kitty has some fun new things in store and we are in the process of refreshing our look while keeping the same great atmosphere and feel. We celebrated our 15 Year Anniversary in October. Our celebration party has been a tradition since our first anniversary. I am grateful for all of the wonderful customers who have supported us over the many years and look forward to building relationships with new ones.

ld Firehouse Books got its start in Fort Collins as the Book Rack of Fort Collins back in 1980. The shop only sold used books and relied on trades only. In 2001, Susie Wilmer and Dick Sommerfeld took ownership of the book store. Since then, they have worked to incorporate a new book selection with their used book collection. In 2009, Susie and Dick moved the store to the old historic firehouse, a Fort Collins landmark, and renamed it Old Firehouse Books. Best Hike

Horsetooth Rock Trail I

f you haven’t been hiking in Fort Collins, you’re missing out. For some of us, Horsetooth is a home away from home. When we need to escape the business of our academic lives, we head to the mountains for relaxation.

Only a 45-minute drive outside of Fort Collins, the hike at Horsetooth Rock is our favorite hike for soaking up that sweet Colorado sun.The trail is 2.5 miles long and takes around an hour and a half to complete. Bring water and be weary if you’re going with friends visiting from out of state; the 1,400 foot elevation from 5,800 to 7,200 feet could cause altitude sickness. The trail is smooth and is only moderately difficult.

52

The steep nature of the hike makes the trek to the summit rewarding. The view to the east overlooks the city of Fort Collins and to the west, there is a clear picture of Longs Peak. Being so high above the valley gives the feeling of being on top of the world. This hike will leave you feeling more grounded and in-touch with nature, as well as refreshed and rejuvenated for the challenges ahead.

Best Bike Shop

Lee’s Cyclery L

ee Cooper founded Lee’s Cyclery in 1963 with the mission of providing excellent quality bicycles and service to the Fort Collins community. He went on to form a close relationship with the city and his business, and after about twenty years, passed ownership to Archie Solsky. Solsky still owns the shop, and earlier this year the Lee’s Cyclery family mourned the loss of Cooper. What makes Lee’s our favorite, is its friendly service and its close proximity to campus. Head in for a new ride, or for bicycle repairs and their experienced team will take fantastic care of you.
