COME PARTICIPATE IN OUR GARDEN CLUB

The Round Lake Area Garden Club is a library program that promotes free horticulture education and resources to our community. The Garden Club generally meets on a monthly basis to discuss all things horticulture, including edible landscapes, native flowers, pollinator plants, heirloom vegetables and so much more!

Our members receive access to free plant material, seeds and educational resources. In addition to these monthly meetings, the Garden Club also stewards the Round Lake Area Food Forest and manages a booth at the Round Lake Area Farmers' Market.

SEED LIBRARY: NOW OPEN!

We are proud to announce the opening of our new seed library to promote plant diversity, interest in horticulture, seed saving and local food production and to save you money!

Seeds have been collected and packaged by our Garden Club and made available at no charge to patrons.

Patrons are allowed to take home up to 6 packets of seeds per visit. This is done purely on the honor system. The seed library will be available anytime that the library is open.

PLANT THE SEEDS OF KINDNESS National Volunteer Week April 15-21, 2018

On April 18th, the library will host an appreciation event for the volunteers who have worked with us over the past year. Volunteers serve the library in many ways and we are very thankful for their support. You will find our volunteers working throughout the library helping with plant care, dusting, shelf reading, gardening, clerical activities, book prep, special events, and programs. We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers!

Thanks to all our volunteers from all of us at the library!

Not sure how to get started? Gardening books can be found with call numbers ranging from 630-635. Visit the library today and pick up a book to get your garden started today!

PLANT CLINICS WITH U OF I MASTER GARDENERS

Have a question about a plant or insect? Let us help with your plant problems. Master Gardeners will be available to do plant and insect identification, diagnosis of disease, insect, weed and chemical injury (chemical injury on field crops only), nematode assays, and help with nutrient related problems, as well as recommendations involving these diagnoses.

Tell us about yourself.

"I was born and raised on the northwest side of Chicago. After graduating from high school, I worked two years at the Info/Education Division of the U.S. Army in Heidelberg, Germany."

How long have you been a volunteer at the library?

"This year I will complete my 20th year as a volunteer at the library."

What jobs/tasks do you currently do for the library?

"I have worked in the Circulation Department since 1998. My chores have changed considerably, but I’m still glad to be here."

Why do your volunteer for the library?

"Volunteering gets me out of the house to socialize with people. It also keeps my brain from getting full of cobwebs, although my spelling is another story."

Why do you think it’s important for people to volunteer in their communities?

"By volunteering at the library, I hope it gives staff more time with our patrons. To everyone I say…

VOLUNTEER! Try it, you’ll like it."

What other organizations do your currently volunteer with?

"I also volunteer at the Round Lake Police Department Records Office every Thursday."

To engage our diverse community through resources and experiences that celebrate ideas, inspire creativity and enrich lives with exceptional personal service.

During the week of April 15, we will be transitioning to a new library catalog. You’ll see a new look as you search for library materials, and will have access to new features such as renewing materials automatically, choices in pickup locations, and ability to create an easy to remember username.

APRIL 8-14, 2018 Libraries Lead Tablet Giveaway Starting on Sunday, April 8, patrons who have a $0.00 balance on their account or apply for a new library card will have the opportunity to enter a tablet giveaway for National Library Week. Patrons will have until 5:00 p.m. on April 14 to enter. The winner will be notified on Monday, April 16. Patrons may enter the giveaway once daily in person at the library for a maximum of 7 entries.

Get information about pets from rescue groups like Save a Pet and other animal rescue organizations. Special pets will be here for you to meet like Holly Collie, library dog. Check out our K-9 demonstration! This is a free drop-in event. NR

Hour of Code: Angry Birds

Come in and learn the basics of coding. Try to navigate your angry bird through the maze in order to hit the green pig. This program will meet in the X-Lab. R

Kindergarten Readiness (Ages 3-5) Wednesdays: April 11, 18 & 25 10:30 a.m.

Bring in your preschooler to learn some of the skills that will prepare them for kindergarten.

Each week will focus on a different skill.

Sensory Friendly Movie Night

This storytime will engage children through stories, movement and music. This non-traditional storytime format is designed for children who have autism, difficulties with sensory processing, or simply sitting still. NR

Join us for a sensory friendly movie. The lights will be dimmed and the sound will be lowered.

Popcorn will be served, but feel free to bring your own snack as well as other comfort items.

This program is designed for children with special needs.
