ELECTRONIC ENVIRONMENT 2018 – PARALLELLT MED S.E.E 2018 EE 2018 arrangeras parallellt med Nordens största mötesplats för den professionella elektronikindustrin, Scandinavian Electronic Event, på Kistamässan. Tillsammans ger det en oerhört spännande mötesplats med stora möjligheter för intressanta möten, för såväl kursdeltagare som utställare – en dynamisk träffpunkt för ny kunskap, nya kontakter och nya affärer. S.E.E 2018 arrangeras den 24-26 april.

Kistamässan ligger centralt placerad i norra Stockholm och dess närhet till flygplatserna Arlanda och Bromma skapar gynnsamma förutsättningar även för internationella kontakter. I år blir det (h)jul..!

a, rubriksättaren är från Göteborg.

Men det finns faktiskt en djupare innebörd med rubriken. Det handlar nämligen om Årets Julklapp, något som jag ägna några rader åt i denna spalt så här års. Det lackar nämligen med bestämda steg mot Jul, och precis som sedan 1998 utnämns varje år en Vinnarklapp av Handelns Utredningsinstitut (HUI). Och visst är det en elektronik-pryl – igen.

UNDER DE SENASTE tio åren har elektroniken nämligen återfunnits i sju av Årets Julklappar.

Den här gången är det el-cykeln som kniper utmärkelsen som den Hetaste Klappen av dem alla.

HUI motiverar utnämningen bland annat med att el-cykeln speglar de svenska konsumenternas ökande klimatmedvetenhet, vilja att ta hand om sin hälsa samt att vara fri, flexibel och stundtals bekväm. Enligt HUI har el-cykeln dessutom en stor potential att på djupet förändra samhällets infrastruktur och människors beteenden. Och

sedan regeringen i årets höstbudget flaggade för införandet av en el-cykelpremie har intresset ökat ytterligare.

Så, kanske nästa års Klapp blir hastighetsreglering, körkortstvång eller plåster. Vi får väl se.

I APRIL ÄR DET DAGS för Electronic Environment 2018 på Kistamässan i Stockholm. EE 2018 kommer då att helt fokusera på kompetensutveckling, genom workshops och heldagarsutbildningar inom EMC, ESD, miljötålighet för elektronik och IoT. Ett allt större behov av kompetens- och resursförsörjning inom elektronikindustrin ställer allt högre krav på tillgängligheten avseende utbildningstillfällen och lokalitet. Detta tar vi fasta på och stöper om vårt tidigare konferensformat till ett renodlat utbildningsformat. Det betyder en stor möjlighet att utbilda sig, eftersom heldagarsutbildningarna arrangeras parallellt med Nordens största mötesplats för den professionella

elektronikindustrin, S.E.E 2018, och lämpligen kombinerar man utbildningen med ett besök på S.E.E. I DETTA NUMMER presenterar Miklos del 20 av artikelserien ”EMC från bricka till bricka” där vi nu har kommit fram till läckagevägar. Michel Mardiguian presenterar den andra delen av sin omfattande artikel om att identifiera och åtgärda EMI-problem. Mats Bäckström presenterar en artikel med titeln ”Immunity Testing in Anechoic and Reverberation Chambers”, och från Ingvar Karlsson kommer bidraget ”Common mode effects in high speed serial links”.

Common mode effects in high speed serial links

Civilingenjör Teknisk Fysik och Elektroteknik (LiTH 1988) samt Tekn Dr. Radiosystemteknik (KTH 2001). Arbetade fram till 1995 som systemingenjör på SAAB Military Aircraft där han arbetade med elektromagnetiska störningars effekter på flygplanssystem. Detta inkluderade skydd mot exempelvis blixtträff, elektromagnetisk puls (EMP) samt High Power Microwaves (HPM). Han har varit adjungerad professor både på högskolan i Gävle och Linköpings universitet. Peter arbetar idag till vardags på FOI. Han var technical program chair för den internationella konferensen EMC Europe 2014 som då arrangerades av Just Event i Göteborg.

Miklos har elektromekaniker- högskoleutbildning för telekommunikation och elektronik i botten samt bred erfarenhet från bl a service och reparation av konsumentelektronik, konstruktion och projektledning av mikroprocessorstyrda printrar, prismärkningsautomater, industriella styrsystem och installationer.

Miklos har sedan 1995 utbildat ett stort antal ingenjörer och andra på sina kurser inom EMC och är också författare till den populära EMC-artikelserien ”ÖGAT PÅ”, i tidningen Electronic Environment.

Under många år var Miklos verksam som EMC-konsult, med rådgivning och provning för många återkommande kunder. Mångårig erfarenhet från utveckling av EMC-riktiga lösningar i dessa uppdrag har gett Miklos underlag, som han med trovärdighet kunnat föra vidare i sina råd, kurser och artiklar.

Michel Mardiguian Michel Mardiguian, IEEE Senior Member, graduated electrical engineer BSEE, MSEE, born in Paris, 1941. Started his EMC career in 1974 as the local IBM EMC specialist, having close ties with his US counterparts at IBM/ Kingston, USA. From 1976 to 80, he was also the French delegate to the CISPR. Working Grp on computer RFI, participating to what became CISPR 22, the root document for FCC 15-J and European EN55022. In 1980, he joined Don White Consultants (later re-named ICT) in Gainesville, Virginia, becoming Director of Training, then VP Engineering. He developed the market of EMC seminars, teaching himself more than 160 classes in the US and worldwide.

Established since 1990 as a private consultant in France, teaching EMI / RFI / ESD classes and working on consulting tasks from EMC design to firefighting. One top involvment has been the EMC of the Channel Tunnel, with his British colleagues of Interference Technology International.

He has authored 8 widely sold handbooks, two of them being translated in Japanese and Chinese, plus 2 books co-authored with Don White.

Ny el-standard Listan upptar standarder fastställda under december 2016 och januari och februari 2017 men bara dem som jag bedömt relevanta för era läsare. Standarderna är sorterade efter fastställelsedatum bakåt i tiden och inom varje datum sorterade efter nummer i beteckningen. Ögat på Vad alla bör känna till om EMC:

EMC & SKÄRMNING DEL 3: Andra läckagevägar EMC måste tas om hand i alla delar, såväl på elektrisk som på mekanisk systemnivå, och på alla nivåer i en utrustning på ett systematisk och planerat sätt. Denna gång tittar på anslutningdonens och anslutningskablarnas inverkan på EMC-skärmning.

D

et är relativt enkelt att uppnå goda EMC-egenskaper när man har att göra med enheter med relativt små dimensioner (t ex digitalklocka eller telefon.) Ofta är båda emissionsegenskaperna och tåligheten inom gällande gränsvärden. Det blir helt annorlunda när vi handskas med enheter med flera anslutande kablar. Små apparater och enheter saknar oftast effektiva ”antenner”, som kan koppla störningsfält till eller från enheten.

Lite antennteori Likt läckage från en avlång öppning bestäms av öppningens längd i förhållande till våglängden, kan en kabel agera som antenn, där kabelns fysiska längd relativt störningens våglängd är avgörande. En kabel, ledning eller vilken ledande struktur som helst vars längd är lika med eller större än halva våglängden är resonant på denna frekvens och förstärker signalen kraftigt.

Effekten finns mer eller mindre påtagligt även i närheten av resonansfrekvensen.

Vi brukar hänvisa till en tumregel som säger att när strukturdelarnas längd är större än en tiondels (ibland tjugondel) våglängd då börjar de bli effektiva antenner.

Det är alltså svårare att hantera apparater med anslutande kablar.

Hantering av kablar och anslutningar

Anslutning av kabelskärm

Kablar kan hanteras på två olika sätt: skärma kablarna eller använd filter. Denna gång behandlar vi kabelskärmning.

Kabelskärmen är oftast en förlängning av apparatskärmen och utgör därmed en del av en totalskärm. Öppningar i en totalskärm innebär läckage: således måste vi ansluta kabelskärmen till apparatskärmen.

Kabelskärmning De flesta konstruktörer och installatörer av elektrisk utrustning är överens om, att skärmade kablar är ett bra sätt att åstadkomma EMC. Men många gånger har jag sett att det kastas stora pengar ”i sjön” på grund av en övertro på kabelskärmars effekter samt okunskap om dess rätta användning och utformning.

Zonindelning Elmiljözon definieras som en given volym med bestämd elmiljö, begränsad av en sluten yta, en zongräns. (Notera att denna yta kan vara en fiktiv, tänkt, yta!)

Vid all slags EMC-konstruktion är det viktigt att tänka i elmiljözoner för att åstadkomma en balanserad skyddslösning. Zontänkandet gör det möjligt att lätt identifiera kopplingsvägar och -mekanismer. (Se tidigare artiklar.)

Allmänt sett förlänger en skärmad kabel, ansluten till ett apparathölje av metall, apparatens interna elmiljözon ut i kabeln.

En del instruktioner är uppenbart felaktiga då de säger att man skall JORDA kabelskärmen!

JORDA betyder i detta fall, att vi ansluter kabelskärmen till närmaste zontillhöriga skärm med möjligast lägsta impedans.

Den i särklass oftast förekommande EMCfrågan är: ”ska man ansluta kabelskärmen i båda ändan eller bara i en ända (och i så fall vilken)?”

En skärmad kabel, ansluten mellan två apparater med metallhölje binder ihop apparaternas skärmar. Ett avbrott i skärmen (bristfälligt eller ej ansluten kabelskärm) medför att de yttre och inre zonerna, och därmed de olika miljöerna, kopplas samman. (Figur 1.) Är kabelskärmen avsedd att vara ”länk” mellan två apparater ska kabelskärmen anslutas till apparaterna i båda ändarna för att behålla zongränsen hel och därmed erhålla god skärmning.

Vikten av lågimpediv anslutning Skärmade kablars skärmningsegenskaper beskrivs med hjälp av kopplingsimpedans (Figur. 2). Där: I = ström på skärmens utsida I´= ström på skärmens insida ΔU = spänning mellan två punkter på skärmens insida Kopplingsimpedans Zt = ΔU/I [Ω/m] Kopplingsimpedansen anger i ohm/m förhållandet mellan störningsspänning, som genereras på skärmens insida, och störningsströmmen, som flyter på utsidan av kabelskärmen. Även det omvända gäller. Kopplingsimpedansen är ett mått på kabelns skärmningsegenskaper, är frekvensberoende och avhängigt av ma-

terial och utformning. Typiska värden är 1 – 10 milliohm/m och exempel visas i Figur 3.

En EMC-riktig kabelskärmsanslutning för skärmning av högfrekvensfält utesluter s k ”piggtails”, eftersom anslutningsimpedansen blir för hög och totalt dominerande i den sammanlagda kopplingsimpedansen. Figur 4. Där: L ̴ 10 nH/cm U = 2π·fˑLˑI eller U = -di/dt Vi bör eftersträva noll ohm i anslutningsimpedans för kabelskärmen. Teknikkrönikan Några trender inom EMC och produktutveckling MED DEN SNABBA teknikutvecklingen inom många områden så möter pruduktutvecklare samtidigt nya EMC-utmaningar som måste hanteras. Användningen av avancerade beräkningsprogram och sofistikerade mätinstrument för att säkra EMC har därför ökat de senaste åren. Detta gäller dock i första hand för större företag som kan ta den kostnaden och samtidigt har den kompetens som krävs för att använda dessa verktyg och mätinstrument på ett effektivt sätt. Mindre aktörer som inte kan finansiera sådana verktyg och som själva inte har in-house kunnande inom EMC har som tidigare att välja på externa konsulter eller en egen beprövad trial-and-error metodik.

EN ANNAN TREND är en ökad användning av färdiga komponentblock såsom radiomoduler och andra färdigutvecklade RF-moduler. Här är utmaningen att kunna integrera sådana delar utan att de för-

utsättningar som de färdiga modulerna är utvecklade för åsidosätts på ett sådant sätt att nya EMC-problem skapas. Då färdiga elektronikmoduler är utvecklade för att fungera EMC-mässigt inom vissa givna förutsättningar så visar erfarenheter att EMC problem uppstår när modulerna integreras i tillämpningar som inte uppfyller dessa förutsättningar. Exempel på sådana avsteg kan vara att man använder andra typer av antenner, andra arbetsfaktorer för pulsning, andra signalfrekvenser eller andra uteffekter än vad modulerna är utvecklade för.

JAG SITTER ÅTERIGEN och skriver på en spalt på ett tåg hem från Stockholm. Den här gångenefter att ha vi idag genomfört föreningens årsmöte med ett antal intressanta presentationer på temat RED. Förhoppningsvis så rätades en del frågetecken ut för deltagarna. RED har inneburit en stor förändring för många tillverkare av utrustning och harmoniseringen av standarder för RED ligger dessutom ordentligt efter. Föredragshållarna fick många frågor från deltagarna och tiden i programmet som från början kändes väl tilltaget blev till slut ganska pressat. Men jag hoppas att deltagarna var nöjda och presentationerna ligger när ni läser detta förhoppningsvis under sites.ieee.org/sweden. Klicka er fram via ”Chapter & Affinities” till ”EMC” och därefter ”EMC Chapter Archive”. Årsmötet förlöpte med sedvanligt lugn och sittande styrelse återvaldes för ytterligare ett år. Vi tackar för detta förtroende. En utmaning för oss är att vända på den vikande medlemstrenden. Jag deltog i en IEEE Chairman Workshop inom IEEE Sverige i oktober och en stor skillnad för oss inom IEEE EMC framstod för mig väldigt tydligt: Flera av de andra sektionerna ser sin huvudsakliga rekryteringsbas bland studenter och doktorander inom respektive område. Det finns trots allt en del doktorander inom områden som datorteknik, halvledarkomponenter och antenner. Men om vi inom EMC-sektionen endast skulle ha rekryterat inom gruppen ”EMC-doktorander i Sverige” så skulle vi ha tynat bort för länge sen. (Jag tror dessutom att alla dessa redan är medlemmar.)

Det självklara svaret är ju att vi behöver locka medlemmar från andra kategorier också, men ett annat svar är att arbeta för att öka statusen för EMC som ämne på våra universitet och högskolor. Även andra delar av IEEE Sverige ser detta som en väg att öka inte bara medlemsantalet utan även ingenjörsyrkets status. En ljuspunkt när det gäller EMC-utbildningar är förresten att det nyligen har publicerats en ny lärobok inom EMC vilken dessutom är skriven på svenska. När hände det senast?

The problem of relating the outcome of a susceptibility or immunity test in a reverberation chamber (RC) to free-space conditions was identified and addressed early [1]. In a RC the equipment under test (EUT) can be regarded as being simultaneously irradiated by plane waves coming from many directions [2]. By rotating a stirrer located inside the chamber the boundary conditions can be changed, leading to statistically independent field conditions (also other methods can be used for this purpose, see e.g. [3]). In that way the stress on the EUT will be varied. The concept of statistical isotropy, sometimes used for the RC, means that the ensemble average of the signal levels induced in an antenna (or in a EUT) will be independent of its directional properties.

The fact that the variations in directivity and polarization are averaged out in a RC indicates that an immunity test carried out in a RC might be less severe than a test carried out in an Anechoic Chamber (AC), at least if the AC test comprises the angles of incidence and polarizations causing the maximum stress on the EUT. Of course, the opposite may also be true, i.e. that the immunity test in an AC might be less severe than a test in a RC. This happens if the angles of incidence and polarizations used in the test correspond to a weak coupling to the EUT.

Reverberation Chamber Basics A reverberation chamber is a highly conductive, electrically large, shielded cavity normally equipped with one or several stirrers to provide a statistically uniform and statistically isotropic field (ensemble averages) [4]. The field pattern consists of a standing wave pattern. The peaks and nulls are moved around by use of the stirrer, thus creating a statistically isotropic environment. Some advantages with reverberation chambers are: • High test field levels for moderate input power (of the order of kV/m for 100 W input).

• Short testing time, i.e. cost-effective testing.

• No rotation of the equipment under test (EUT) is required.

• The location of the EUT is not critical (the distance from walls should be at least λ ⁄4).

• Good repeatability between tests occasions and between different chambers.

• Good simulation of the real electromagnetic environment for a EUT which operates in an overmoded cavity such as an electrically large avionics bay.

• Absorbers are normally not required.

• The statistical properties of the RC electromagnetic field are well known, thus the method uncertainty of a test can easily be calculated.

• Provides electromagnetic isolation from the external environment.

The reverberation chamber also has some disadvantages: 0 High lowest usable frequency (LUF), around a few hundred MHz for a 5 x 3 x 3 m3 chamber.

0 Loss of information regarding polarisation (p) and directional (D) properties of the EUT. 0 Difficult to relate test results, when necessary, to free space conditions.

The last point, i.e. if and how we can relate the stress a EUT feels in a (statistically) isotropic environment to that induced by a plane wave, will be treated below.

In Eq. (2) the averages (indicated by the brackets) are taken over all angles and polarizations.

Relation between AC and RC test environments – measurement of shielding effectiveness We start by making a comparison of a measurement of shielding effectiveness (SE) in the two environments since this more straightforward than comparing the results of an immunity test. For convenience, since the goal is to compare a SE measurement in the two environments, we use an ad hoc definition of SE in terms of the receiving cross section of the field probe located inside the equipment under test (EUT), related to the magnitude of the external field irradiating the EUT. We consider a EUT, equipped with an internal field sensor, as a receiving antenna. Furthermore, we assume that the measurement in the RC is made using an ensemble average of many statistically independent stirrer positions, i.e. the measured result corresponds to (almost) perfect isotropic conditions. In the RC the power received by the sensor inside the EUT is given by, cf. Eq. (2):

Relation between AC and RC Test Environments An immunity test in an isotropic environment may be either more or less severe than a test in a plane wave environment. The averages are taken over all stirrer positions used in the test.

In a corresponding measurement of SE in the AC, i.e. using the same sensor at the same location inside the EUT, we get:

Relation between AC and RC test environments – immunity testing In an immunity test the relation between the two environments becomes more complicated. One reason is that the immunity test parameter in a RC is given by the maximum field strength. Another reason is that different definitions on the RC test field strength lead to different relations [5].

Both the total, |ET,Max| , and a rectangular component, |E R,Max|, of the electric field are used in different standards. For the power received by a critical component inside the EUT one can show that:

Research Agency (FOI). Field probes were mounted inside each device to simulate the outcome of an immunity test, using |E R,Max|=|E AC |. The results show that, for typical test procedures, the expected level of under-testing were similar in the two environments, see Figure 1. The level of under-testing, in the figure called Apparent Error Bias, is defined as the deviation from an ideal immunity test in an AC, i.e. in which case the true Pr,EUT,AC,Max is attained. The expected Apparent Directivity equals 2DMax. The expected Error Bias in the reverberation chamber, cf. above, equals 3⁄2DMax. As can be seen in the figure, this corresponds well to the measured results.

A Remaining Issue The review above concerns the stress picked up by a critical component inside the EUT. An analysis becomes more complicated if there are several critical components and, e.g., if a malfunction of an equipment requires a simultaneous malfunction of several critical components.

Common mode effects in high speed serial links Abstract. In production of printed circuit boards (PCB) signal skew will be introduced in differential traces due to the weave effect. A skew that will vary from PCB to PCB. This signal skew generates mode conversion that together with poor common mode properties, along the high-speed channel, will degrade the system performance. For example, might the skew effect give a crosstalk much higher than the pure differential crosstalk. If the poor common mode properties in the channel are high and the skew can be expected to be high enough, the channel performance will be affected. Some PCB’s, with right combination of skew, might fail with too high bit error rate (BER) and other PCB’s will work.

I. Introduction In high speed serial links are often components as connectors and via structures included. Such components and structures might have poor common mode properties. The poor common mode properties will not influence the differential signal as long as there is no common mode signal generated along the channel but influence if common mode signals are introduced. Signal skew is a large source of mode conversion to generate common mode signals in the channel. This common mode signal might have a large impact on the performance due to the poor common mode properties in the channel. This paper will discuss mode conversion, coupling mechanism and its impact on the performance.

II. Skew and mode conversion Mode conversion can be generated by several sources. Sources as signal skew, impedance mismatch, geometric differences in traces and stackup, non-symmetrical driven signals out from a transmitter, mismatch in transmitter and/or receiver termination impedance, imbalance in placement of ground vias around a differential pair via, imbalance in the signal path trough a connector etc. But normal will the skew generate the highest mode conversion. All other mode conversion is normally small compare to skew in high speed links.

Fig. 2 shows the differential insertion loss (IL) after the skew. With a skew of 25% of the bit length, approximately 10 ps in a 25G link, gives 0.7 dB in IL at half baud rate. But with a skew equal to one bit will create very large IL, in theory infinitely large, at half baud rate. With a skew of one bit and a transmitted data patter of 1.0.1.0.1.0… will not pass the link as a differential signal, it will show up as a DC-signal, a common mode signal, at the receiver. This does not mean that a channel with a skew equal to one bit or more will not function. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE) [1], in the receiver can, to a certain extent, reshape the signal to a useful signal pattern. For example, in a link with a one bit skew and the n-channel lag the p-channel. If now the DFE cancel out the contribution from the n-channel at each sampling point. Then will the receiver only see the p-channel with, for this example, is the bit pattern 1.0.1.0.1.0… This handling of the skew, in DFE, works only for the part of the lag pulse that is within the DFE working range. The signal will however suffer from extra losses, the signal will be approximately half in amplitude with one bit skew, approximately 6 dB extra loss, compare to a channel without skew.

Fig. 1 shows mode conversion caused by skew in the coupled transmission line. The transmission line is a stripline with equal propagation velocity for differential mode and common mode signals. On the x-axes is f/ fb scaled where f is the frequency and fb is the baud rate. On the y-axes is the amplitude in dB. With a skew of one bit will all off the differential signal be converted into common mode at half baud rate.

Fig. 3 shows the increase in EYE closing after DFE verses skew length.

The link, in this case, has an IL of 20 dB at half baud rate and the graph shows the extra introduced losses, caused by the skew, after the DFE. With a skew of approximately one bit or more the increase in losses is about 6 dB. This type of losses will, in many cases, have rather low influence on the noise in the channel if we exclude crosstalk noise. But with margin for the extra losses and the increase in noise, caused by the skew, a channel with skew of one bit or more will work.

Mode conversion converts, for example, parts of the differential signal into common mode signal. If this common mode signal reaches the receiver the receiver can normally handle this common mode signal without too high disturbance. The mode conversion in the receiver is normally rather low.

III. Skew combined with crosstalk

In the section II it was shown that common mode effects caused by skew will, in many cases, be of no problem, the DFE take care of the skew effects.

Often will the common mode effects be ignored or add little attention to in the design process. With low attention on common mode properties often large or very large common mode crosstalk and common mode impedance mismatch can be observed in channels. It’s rather common to see plus 20 dB of higher common mode crosstalk compare to differential mode crosstalk in connectors, via structures etc. So, for example if there are a skew, on an aggressor line, in front of a connector, and the connector suffer from high common mode crosstalk then will the victim channel get a high common mode crosstalk signal. As the receiver is rather insensitive to common mode signal this common mode crosstalk signal will normally be of no problem.

If we now have two sections with mode conversion in the link one on the aggressor channel in front of the connector and one on the victim channel after the connector, see Fig. 4.

Electronic Environment #4.2017 Spatial shifted differential pairs to minimize differential crosstalk; Sometimes one sees recommendation to spatial shift traces to minimize differential crosstalk or to place vias and pins in an orthogonal configuration. Fig. 5 shows two examples of this type of arrangement. Both have low differential crosstalk but high common mode crosstalk.

If for example the shifted differential pairs are used in a PCB layout and the length of the coupled section is 10 mm. The differential mode crosstalk will be low but the common mode crosstalk will be very high.

Fig. 6 shows the differential near end crosstalk, NEXT, with 40 mm traces between the aggressor and the coupling section and 40 mm traces between the coupling section and the receiver. The skew, of 10 ps or 20 ps, are placed equally on both the aggressor side and on the receiver side.

The differential crosstalk, at close to half baud rate, increase with almost 24 dB with 10 ps of skew and almost 30 dB with 20 ps of skew compare to the situation with no skew. For such layout, for high speed links, will reduce the operational margin for a system when skew is introduced. Some connectors use this shift arrangement of pins inside the connector to minimize the differential crosstalk. The connector will then suffer from very high common mode crosstalk.

In this case will the signal convert to common mode in the aggressor skew part and feed the connector with common mode signal. This common mode signal will leak into the victim channel and at the skew part in the victim channel, after the connector, will this common mode signal convert back to differential mode and show up as a differential crosstalk at the receiver. A differential crosstalk, coupled as common mode crosstalk, added to the pure differential crosstalk. If for example the common mode crosstalk is 20 dB higher than the differential mode crosstalk and a skew of 10 ps exist at both sides of the connector in a 25G link (about -8 dB in mode conversion at half baud rate, see Fig 1.) then will the differential crosstalk, caused by the skew, be -8 dB + 20 dB -8 dB = +4 dB. This crosstalk caused by the skew will be 4 dB higher than the pure differential crosstalk and then dominate the crosstalk picture. The skew effects can not be neglected if the common mode crosstalk is high compare to the differential crosstalk.

In a crosstalk section is normally also a mode conversion taking place, a conversion from differential mode to common mode. For some skew settings on the aggressor channel will this mode conversion and common mode crosstalk be in phase and add up. For other skew settings they will cancel out each other and reduce the output common mode signal.

The skew on the receiver channel will also be in phase or out of phase of the common mode crosstalk signal. This crosstalk, caused by the skew, is added to the pure differential coupled crosstalk. The phases of the crosstalk caused by the skew and the pure differential coupled crosstalk will strongly influence the total differential crosstalk. To find the worst crosstalk situation different combinations of the aggressor skew and the receiver skew must be investigated. One skew combination will give highest crosstalk in one frequency area and another combination might give highest crosstalk in another frequency area.

The mode conversion from skew takes place at the edge of the signal transition. If there are two skew sections together with a common mode crosstalk coupling in between and the skew is short compare to the pulse width. Then will the differential crosstalk signal, out from this skew section, be a sinusoidal pulse shaped signal generated on each signal transition. The period time of the pulse will be close to the bit length.

The spectra content of this pulse train will be high in frequency. The majority of the crosstalk noise power will be around 10 GHz in a 25G link. The level of common mode crosstalk around 10 GHz is then very important for the crosstalk coupling caused by skew.

IV. Structures with high common mode crosstalk The common mode crosstalk takes place in different types of structures.

Listed below are some structures that suffer from high common mode crosstalk.

Microstrip routing; Tight routed differential microstrip traces will have

a rather high common mode crosstalk much higher than stripline. Microstrip routing needs then larger spacing to minimize common mode crosstalk. Microstrip has also different propagation velocity for differential mode and common mode signals. A length compensation is then needed to be placed close to where the length mismatch occurs otherwise will the differences in speed make the length compensation not to work.

Fig. 7 shows a rather common used via pattern for connectors. Here is the signal vias as red and ground vias as black. To the right is the differential mode NEXT and common mode NEXT plotted. The common mode NEXT is about 30 dB higher than differential NEXT in a large frequency range. The thickness of the backplane is 4 mm.

path for common mode is difficult inside a connector. There should be a ground that encapsulates all the electromagnetic fields from the signal pins. There should be no leakage of fields between differential pins and to get this a 360° shield should be placed around each differential pair.

But in the mating area is it difficult to maintain this field encapsulated structure. Often the ground structure starts to get a shape of a pin or the structures got holes and cut outs. Also at the side of the connector is it difficult to maintain the 360° shield. Through the openings in the shield will the fields leak and create crosstalk. Especially the common mode fields will leak through openings as all common mode fields will be terminated to the ground shield.

V. Sources of skew Skew can be created in different ways in a link. Listed below are some structures that can generate skew in a channel.

skew. Stripline will generate approximately 7 ps skew per mm in length difference. Layout tools have support to avoid mismatch in length so this is normally in control. But it is important to compensate length differences prior entering vias etc. because differential mode and common mode have different velocity through a coupled via and a length compensation after a via will then not work. One need also be careful in length compensation for microstrip. Microstrip has different propagation velocity for differential mode and common mode signals. To eliminate introduced length mismatch the compensation should be placed close to the where the length mismatch is generated otherwise will the differences in speed make the length compensation not to work.

constant around 3. The glass weave consists of woven fills and warps.

These fills and warps are as bundles if they are not spread out. A trace placed over a bundle will se higher dielectric constant than a trace placed between two bundles, see Fig. 8. The lower trace will see a higher dielectric constant than the upper trace. The differences in dielectric constant generate a skew due to the difference in propagation velocity for the traces.

A dense weave as 2116, 7628 etc. gives smaller variations in the electrical environment. A more open weave gives larger variations. Reference [1] and [3] gives indications that a skew up to 9 ps/25 mm might be expected for dense weave. With longer traces parallel with the weave higher skew will be expected. The level of skew will vary from PCB to PCB and must be treated as a probability function. If for example the total lengths of traces that are parallel with the weave are 30 mm or longer then can we expect, to a certain probability, that the skew will exceed 10 ps and for traces longer than 60 mm the skew will exceed 20 ps.

One way to minimize the weave effect is to route the traces with an angle to the weave, to avoid 0°, 45° and 90° angle to the weave. But this type of routing need larger area on the PCB and this area might not exist. Also in the breakout area of integrated circuits and connectors it might not be possible to place traces in a non 0° and 90° angle fashion.

To rotate the PCB on the panel might reduce the utilization of the panel and increase the PCB cost.

VI. Conclusions Skew is a major source to mode conversion, a conversion from differential mode to common mode signal and vise versa. Often are component/ structures in a channel with poor common mode properties used. For example, a component with very high common mode crosstalk. If there is a new mode conversion after the common mode crosstalk then will this common mode crosstalk signal be converted into a differential signal. This differential crosstalk signal, passing as a common mode signal through the component, can be much higher than the pure differential crosstalk.

The skew will vary from PCB to PCB and the crosstalk level will then vary from PCB to PCB. If the link passes a backplane or a cable the combinations of PCB’s will set the crosstalk level. One combination of PCB’s might fail due to high bit error rate caused by the skew combinations. By exchange one PCB the link will probably work again. This, from PCB to PCB, random crosstalk level is hard to investigate and difficult to find the fault if one board is pointed out as faulty.

Common mode properties in connectors, via structures etc. together with assumptions of skew levels should be considering in the analyze of a link. To ignore the common mode effects might give high fault rate in volume production.

The supports from simulation tools to handle skew in links are normally limited and require large man work to cover.

Fairview’s 13 new SMA coaxial filters consist of seven bandpass filters and six low pass filters. SOME SIMPLE HINTS FOR

IDENTIFYING AND FIXING EMI TROUBLES Preamble. This second part of our EMI Troubleshooting guidelines is devoted to investigation and cure of EMI susceptibility problems.

Since, according to our former article (Ref.1) conducted tests are faster and easier to perform, we will concentrate on these and avoid more complex and expensive radiated susceptibility test set-ups.

The first half of this article will address the situation where the equipment at stake is still in the plant or lab, at the end of its development phase or in an early stage of production.

The second half will cover the more difficult cases where the faultly equipment is already in service, installed at some customer site.

Susceptibility Problems on Prototype or Pre-Qualification item Only a limited set of tests can be carried using essentially conducted excitation set-ups, without (or before) resorting to an actual Radiated Susceptibility check in an EMC lab. Preferrably, as explained in Ref.1, susceptibility checks should be done after emission test have been carried-out, and eventually their non-compliance been investigated and solved. Notice that so-called "Susceptibility" tests are in fact made to demonstrate EUT Immunity. Therefore, we should always try to reach, within a reasonable span, the actual "Fail" threshold to get a measure of our Compatibility margin as compared to the Immunity "No-Fail" requirements.

Of all suceptibility tests, the EFT (or " Bursts") is the simplest to install and run, and yet one of the most meaningfull. Thanks to its wideband spectrum covering kHz to more than 60MHz at each single pulse, it will track down most of the EMC weaknesses of digital as well as analog circuits.

Like for emissions, we try staying away from formal Radiated Susceptibility (R.S) tests, and use substitute conducted tests instead. These conduction (or injection) tests are deemed to recreate on the EUT what its cables (power and signal) and internal circuits would actually receive from a severe, conducted or radiated threat. So, by order of simplicity and efficiency we will limit our tests to: – Electrical Fast Transients (EFT Bursts) – ESD ( Direct and Indirect) – Bulk Current Injection (Continuous Wave )

2. Requirements for informal Suceptibility Test site and EUT set-up The site requirements for an informal EMC Immunity test are the same as for emissions (Ref. 1), except that the quiet RF ambient requirement is exactly the opposite: a quiet ambient is not necessary. Instead, since susceptibility tests will force strong HF signals or fast pulses, it is prudent to forbid, or temporary discontinue the use of sensitive electronic equipments ( computers, office equipment and instruments other than intentional EMI generators) in close proximity - say less than 5m from the test set-up. For the same mirror reasons as above, it is recommended to filter and if possible isolate the AC power branch circuit that feeds the EUT and set-up. This can be done by the same LISN and isolation transformer that were used for emission testing.

During the susceptibility test, we will limit the Auxiliary Equipments (AE) to a minimum, using everywhere possible passive loads at the end of I/O cables. A good example is a Tx/Rx link that can be set in self-looping mode. As for emissions tests, the AEs must have an Immunity level equal (or greater) to the one we are testing for. If this is not feasible, an added, temporary filtering on their interfaces, or Coupling/Decoupling Network (CDNs) can be used to isolate the AEs from the EUT.

Bear in mind that you will be "teasing" the product to see if and how it fails. To easy-up the test, the EUT must be set in an automatic mode such as it performs its normal functions continuously. This can be done using an auto-test mode, or a specific emulation software which :

Because it simulates the direct or indirect coupling of switching transients on the AC distribution wiring ( relays, repetitive arcing in switches, turn-off of heavy-duty motors, variable frequency converters etc ...) caused by nearby power devices, the test is applied both on the power input and signal cables, per IEC 61000-4-4.

3.1 Instrumentation and set-up EFT generator and EUT should be installed on the test ground plane (floor level or workbench with metal foil. Cables are laid at approximately 5cm above with insulating spacers (Fig.2). The generator should not be too close from the EUT, since 4kV pulses with 5ns riste times are hefty transients that radiates a strong E-field. Close exposure of the EUT could cause a direct box-to-box failure that would mislead the test issue.

Same remark applies to the AE particiapting to the test.

– For superimposing HF pulses on power cord, the generator has its own internal Coupling/ Decoupling network, such as the fast bursts are injected on the EUT only and do not sneak into the lab power mains. Normal injection is CM ( Line 1+ Line 2 together vs chassis), but it is possible to select any combination of L1, L2 and earth ( Green/ Yellow).

– EFT injection on I/O cables is a contact-less coupling (no stripping of cable sinsulation), applied with a special capacitive clamp, 1m long that can be folded over the tested cable (Fig 2). Beware that this folding armature is the coupling "hot plate", reaching up to 4kV and must not be touched or approached during the test. Since its size and weight can be impractical for some non-standard set-ups, it can be replaced by a tight wrap of aluminium foil, 30 to 50cm wide, around the tested cable, that will provide the necessary 60-100pF of distributed capacitance to the tested wires. The HV injection cable from the generator should be ≤ 1m long.

Next to EFT, the ESD test is a also powerful teller of potential EUT weaknesses. It covers in a single flash an even wider frequency spectrum, up to 350MHz considering its 0,7-1ns risetime, but at difference with the EFT conducted bursts, it generates also a strong and fast rising H-field on the EUT box itself. You are directly zapping in a few ns a broad frequency spectrum that would take hours to explore during a real RF immunity test.

• The most common instrument is an ESD generator conforming to IEC 61000-4-2, with 330Ω Internal resistance and 150pF capacitance (Fig.3). Other simulators can be used according to the familly of EUT being tested.

• Horizontal and Vertical Coupling plates ( HCP, VCP) if the EUT must be tested for Indirect discharge (IESD).

EUT preparation and set-up precautions are the same as for other immunity tests, with a strong emphasis on proper decoupling or safe distance of the associated AE, if any. The location of the ESD current ground return lead is critical: it should be attached to the test ground (floor) plane on the same EUT side as the face being tested.

3.2 EFT Test routine For all injections, test at least 30s on each polarity. Do not switch abruptly from (+) to (-) pulse polarity, always step through an "Off" mode in-between.

Consider this as a no-damage // no error criteria :the low amount of energy in each pulse is such that a damage level is seldom reached without a preliminary warning by a malfunction or error. DO NOT insist for reaching a true damage level ! Keep your prototype safe and investigate the reasons of the temporary fault – or lock-up status. a) Begin with power cable first. If nothing else specified, start with the lower level of IEC 61000-4-4, then increase progressively up to at least a No-Fail level #3 (2kV) which is genrally satisfactory. However, for a development test, it is advisable to try reaching one level higher to know your margin... b) Increase the level progressively, preferably by octave steps, addressing combinations of L1, L2, L1+L2 and so on, with (+),(-) polarity.

When (if) a FAIL level is reached, note the settings for all the last RUN levels. If the generator has progressive voltage setting,reduce the amplitude until you find the actual RUN/FAIL edge, such as you know your margin. c) Inject onto each signal cable, keeping the capacitive coupling sleeve 1m away from the EUT. If external cables are shielded, the test is simply applied over the shield insulation jacket. If an AE was needed for the test monitoring, make sure that this AE has its input protected by proper filtering or snap-on ferrites toroids, located near the AE side.

3.3 EFT Test diagnosis and Fixes If the test fails, concentrate on the failing port ( Power or Signal ) and check for: – Incorrect mounting, or insufficient CM attenuation of the powerline filter – Missing or poor cable shield connections – Ungrounded metallic connectors – Lack of, or improperly mounted CM filtering capacitors (long leads) – I/O wiring running too far inside the EUT before they are filtered Improve immunity by correcting the above, eventually adding filtered connector/adapters, or split-ferrites (2 or 3 turns) to the faultly I/O cable.

Re-do the test, starting from the latest "NO FAIL" level as a reference, to grade the improvements.

4.2 ESD Test routine

4.3 ESD Test diagnosis and Fixes

At difference with the EFT continuous train of high voltage bursts, ESD replicates an isolated, rarely-occuring event. Therefore, exceptions accounted, there is no point in applying an "absolutely-NO error" criteria.

If the EUT has efficient error detection and recovery mode, this can be considered as an acceptable response, provided it does not result in a lock-up status, requiring a manual reset or creating a safety issue.

If the test fails, try understanding what are the sensitive circuitry that has been exposed to the close coupling of the discharge. Be on the look for long slots or seams leakages on the EUT enclosure, that act as re-radiating antennas to the nearby wiring or PCB traces inside.

a) Establish the Direct or Indirect (IESD) procedure you will be using (ref. IEC 61000-4-2).

Briefly, if the EUT is metallic on all its faces, only direct ESD will be performed. Otherwise direct discharge will be attempted on all touchable or arc-reachable metal parts, the rest of the EUT being tested by the IESD method on the HCP and VCP. Insist on cable entry areas, keyboard and display edges, touch sensitive panels. Mark-up the pre-determined discharge points directly on the EUT faces or on 3-D sketch. b) Start with a low level (e.g 2kV) in a fast repetitive mode, like 5 or 20 pulses/sec for a coarse survey of all the discharge zones. c) Increase the level progressively by 2kV steps until you reach the desired criterion plus a 1-2kV margin. d) If failures are noted, abandon the fast repetitive mode and return on the failing area with a single shot, or ≤ 1 pulse/sec. mode, such as allowing for the EUT self-recovery process, if any. Run a minimum of 50 discharges per point. ESD is a super-short duration, random event: applying only a few discharges (the 10 discharges recommended in IEC norm are definitely not enough) would turn into a risky hit-or-miss process. e) Record the Run/Fail levels, documenting the type of error/malfunction: Recoverable ? Non-recoverable ? Loss of data ?

When trying fixes such as : • Shielding (or shielding improvement) of I/O cables • Shielded connectors, ferrites, decoupling capacitors • Better bonding of panels, doors etc … to the main chassis (for metal cabinets or racks) • Reduction of slots and seams leakage by gasketting or adding more screws • Increasing the air gap crossing distance for zones where air discharges have occured Always grade your progress via new Run/Fail mappings. Like for EFT, do not remove a fix that gave disappointing results. Accumulate them until success, then and only then, remove fixes sequentially to find the ones that could be useless.

4.4 Indirect ESD on a PCB prototype or pre-production item.

If your analysis of the ESD test has indicated which functional circuit is disturbed, it could be worth focusing on the specific PCB (or set of) that is hosting this function. For this, the EUT housing should be removed, keeping only the metallic base plate, or if it is a plastic case, the topless EUT will be installed on a large aluminium or steel plate. Having spotted the circuits that are susceptible to ESD, identify some connector pins or printed traces that can "witness" the functional status of the essential circuits (for inst. WatchDog, Reset, Power ON, IRQ etc...). On these traces or pins, solder a LED whose state will indicate a Good/Bad status for the corresponding function. Disconnect all I/O cables that are not absolutely necessary. The PCB can eventually made fully a stand-alone by attaching a battery pack to the board, equipped with clip-on teminals for easy turn-off.

Test Routine for IESD on a PCB Attach the ESD gun ground post to the test ground plane by a short grounding strap (fig.5). The discharge is applied to the EUT bottom plate (or substitute coupling plate), following a contour of ≈ 5-10 cm from the board edge. Start with low level like 0,5kV and discharge the tip of the ESD gun all around the marked-up designated contour, trying to reach progressively 4-6kV. Although it gives no quantitative assessment, this test is a simple way to pin-point weak spots and find out the layout flaws or specific components responsive of the poorest immunity, thus inviting improvements.

Then, try temporary fixes and grade your improvements. DO NOT try direct contact discharges on PCB traces or connector pins.

Next to EFT and ESD, this test is a powerful indicator of EUT susceptibility to strong RF ambients, from intentional radio transmittrers. It consist in injecting via a clamp-on current transformer the same HF signal as the cables would see if they were exposed to a real field. The difference being that you do not need to generate this field. This test is required by Mil Std 461/CS114, with values of injected HF current ran-

ging from 15 to 300mA, and to some extent, is also part of IEC immunity test 61000-4-6. Unfortunately, running this test makes your EUT cables radiate a significant RF field, which could make you liable for an illegal interference to public radio and TV as far as km away. We do not recommend trying it elsewhere than in a shielded room, or at least an underground place.

the injection probe. But when monitoring the injected current, do not try re-adjusting the current for maintaining the calibration value. Let the bundle current establish by itself, depending on the actual impedance of the cable-to-ground loop. What counts is that the induced open-voltage keeps the value that was set during calibration.

5.1 Quick, simplified calibration of the injection set-up The key element for making this test more than a qualitative investigation is a proper calibration of the injection tool (Fig.6). This calibration will allow a quantitative assessment of the radiated field coupling that you mimic by this substitution method.

A simple rule is as follows: When cable length exceeds ≈ ¼ wavelenght, the current Ii induced by a given Field in V/m no longer depends on frequency and settle to a maximum value around 1mA / (V/m). Only the cable height above the local ground plane has a small influence on the amplitude of Ii. More detailed values of cable Common Mode current is given on Table 1.

6. EMC HARDENING FOR EQUIPMENT installed at customer site EMI problems occuring in the field are a difficult challenge. This is a case where there is very little possibility, if at all, for modifying the equipment.

All solutions are relying on cable layout, shielding, additional I/O and power filtering, power conditioning and eventually room or site treatment.

Even if, as of today, most electrical/electronic equipment put on market has to meet rather severe EMC requirements, suceptibility and emissions incompatibility problems still happen. Reasons for this are multiple: – a recent, large system could include older equipments that do not comply with current EMC norms – poor cabling and grounding practices by unaware contractors that degrade an otherwisecorrect immunity – some sensitive equipments that are impossible to harden, by their very nature (magnetic sensors, E-Beam microscopes) or generate strong disturbances (elevators, arc welders, RF medical imaging, some indusrial process) The following basic guidelines will save you from frustrating experiences at customer's site where people telling you that they have already tried everything, rely on your magic wand for making miracles.

6.1 Before going to the site 100 mm

In many cases, we have found that rushing to a problem site because the user is pressing you may induce two mistakes: – you do not collect enough data for preparing a sound investigation scheme – you either bring too many or too few instruments or measuring devices, leaving behind the one precious accessory that cannot be found on site Instead, there are things you must check in advance ("Forewarned is forearmed"):

5.1 Bulk cable injection test routine The EUT is installed like for the Conducted Emissions (Ref 1) or EFT test. The tested cable is laid 5cm above the ref. metal ground plane. The other end can be terminated on a passive load. The AE representing the peripheral unit is isolated, HF-wise, from the test by a Coupling Decoupling Network, or at least a set of CM ferrites, close to the AE ( Fig.6).

The injection probe is fed by a signal generator, teamed with a power amplifier capable of feeding a sufficent power to the probe, taking into account the probe transfer ratio, some cable loss and a 4 times margin (6dB, in power).

Starting with low levels, increase the generator level up the its pre-calibration setting. The input signal must be amplitude-modulated by a low AM , with at least 50% modulation. For sake of checking that a loop current actually exist, a monitoring current probe is added, near

This may dictate the equipment you will bring • Does the failure correlate with a specific time of day ? Or with certain loads being on/off the power distribution ? • Oscilloscopes: which Bandwidth ? Battery-operated ?

• Any recorders for intermittent problems ?

Thus you will bring whatever is necessary to complement the instrumentation available on site. In any case, don't forget bringing an EMC clamp-on current probe. c) Sometimes, based on the above, a fast, rough estimate can be done on the likelihood of the problem, if the data you have collected suggest what is the source, its frequency range, what and where is the victim device and what are the possible coupling path. d) Plan some advance strategy for diagnosis and fix. Don't count that the first attempt will work, anticipate alternate options.

6.5 Intermittent Problems These represent a respectable % of field calls, with a long search to find a correlation between a rarely-occuring problem and some external cause.

If the source is found within the customer premises, it may be worthwile seeing if the noise can be suppressed at its source, by adding filters, or box / cable shielding. Sometimes after a patient search, the external cause is

found but you have no control on it (an elevator nearby, an arc-welder in a machine shop one block away etc..). Ultimately, no correlation has been found. These are cases where we will use the forced-crash approach, by recreating artificially an event that we cannot afford waiting for.

(Fig 2). If these levels are not met, use the fix hints in section 3.3. Some of these fixes maybe applicable on-site, without too much disruption for the user. Other fixes could make-up for design weaknesses that you cannot improve on an installed equipment. Those you will apply on the installation itself:

6.6 Failures that cannot be correlated: "Forced Crash" Approach If answer to Box "B" routine in Fig.7 is NO, no correlation has been found between the failure and some intermittent event on the site. Such events can be artificial or natural, occuring at irregular times in this site like severe electrical fault triggering overcurrent protections or ground fault detectors (GFD), or eventually storms. In such case, some searching in the history of local lighning strokes, or power disruption in some part of the building can provide clues if they correlate with the moment of the failures.

Although more difficult to track, a second random cause, may be the normal ON/OFF switching of low power electromechanical switches, relays, thermostats … etc, in close vicinity ( less than 10m) from the victim.

Finally a third threat, ESD, has generally a seasonal relationship, like increasing during cold and dry weather, aggravated by high personnel activity and type of floor covering. But it may be also machine-originated ESD, with some production tools, robots etc … causing ElectroStatic charging/ discharging phenomena with peak currents exceeding 50A, that may go un-noticed.

In all these cases above the "Forced Crash" is an ultimate strategy where you decide that you cannot wait for some hard-to-catch problem to showup, so you deliberately inject onto the equipment a transient pulse (or train of pulses) that is "shaking", EMI-wise, the victim equipment. The best simulators for this kind of artificial threat are the EFT and ESD. Starting with low levels, the applied pulses will be increased until the equipment starts exhibiting malfunctions. If the "FAIL" threshold is significantly lower than the immunity level that should be expected for this equipment and environment, you will harden one or the other until this installed equipment meets or exceeds the immunity for its category.

Accordingly, over some probation period of a few days or weeks, the user should report a reduction, or disappearance of the problem. The driving assumption is: If it withstands the standard immunity level on site, this equipment is vaccinated against any kind of short, fast-rising transient, even if the true cause is never found.

6.7 Common Precautions to EFT and ESD on-site "forced crash" method The principle of the set-up and routine are basically the same as for development tests, with some noticeable differences in the actual application, considering that you miss the commodities of a design/development lab. Instead, you are on a customer's site, with probably other equipments that are still running, people doing their regular work etc...

This implies some precautions, like working off-hours or temporary isolating some section of the plant or building. a) There will probably be no ground plane, so you will use the next, closest metal framework (building girders for instance) as a reference for connecting a temporary aluminium foil. The EFT generator will be grounded to this foil. The EUT will NOT be grounded to the foil, but will keep its normal (presumably safety earth wire) connection to the power panel earth bar. b) You are testing an equipment that is actually in use. As the test is progressing, watch for the symptoms that have been noticed by the users. Make sure that your crash evaluation does not lead to material damage or eventually safety hazard. Ask for putting in standby mode any peripheral that could create such a risk.

6.9 Forced Crash using ESD simulator This method is for the cases where there is a suspicion that the problem could be ESD (answer YES in Fig. 7 box D. It precisely reveals weak spots on the equipment box and I/O ports area, that an EFT test may have missed. The test procedure is similar to that of lab test, Sect.4. For an installed equipment, the NO-Fail levels of Fig.3 are recommended.

Warning

This supposed to be a No-Damage test. Errors are normally tolerated if they are self-recovered, without serious prejudice to the user. Hard errors, especially if they resemble the ones that the EUT user was complaining about are not acceptable. Do not discharge directly on EUT parts that are directly wired to sensitive circuits inside (like connector pins of Digital Bus interfaces, video or RF inputs etc ..), unless the normal factory test of the EUT did include this requirement.

Due to the high voltages (up to 15kV) on the tip of the ESD gun, this method can be dangerous for an equipment whose susceptibility is unknown (never tested by the manufacturer) or even for personnel. Make sure your temporay test area is bound with visible warning tape.

7. Power Line Monitoring There is a domain that an on-site EFT test will not reveal: long-duration power mains disturbances, typically longer than a few tens µs. These are difficult to simulate on-site, because it would require injecting significant disturbances that could affect part or all the AC distribution in this customer's facility. So, if occasional power line disturbances are suspected, it is recommended to install a power-line disturbance monitor.

This "spy" instrument will survey constantly the short overvoltages and undervoltages, indicating their amplitude, duration, and precise time of occurance (day, hour, minute). If the sensors are correctly installed, they will show if the disturbance was DM ( line-to-line) or CM (Line to Gnd). Choose (they are often available for rental) an equipment with battery back-up, and select a sensing threshold equal to what could exceed the normal (proven) immunity of the EUT to power line. If after some observation period, the EUT had suffered the failures the user was reporting, you will find if they correlate with some power mains disturbances, and eventually install surge protection devices or a power conditioning (UPS).

c) For EFT, if the EUT power cord does not fit into the generator outlet, use the aluminium foil wrapping on the power cord, like for the signal cable (See Sect. 3.1).

6.8 Forced Crash using EFT simulator This method is, by far, the preferred test to start with, since it requires less time and preparation, being performed on power cables and signal cables only, that are typical weak spots of a system.

Test ALL cables, starting from a low level. For those AE which must functionnaly operate with the EUT, use ferrite decoupling, as described in Sect 3. The EUT must resist on site, to levels that are at least equal to the IEC 61000-4-4 Table

Forskning Grafen möjliggör höghastighetselektronik på böjbara material EN BÖJBAR DETEKTOR för terahertzfrekvenser (1000 gigahertz) har utvecklats av forskare på Chalmers med hjälp av grafentransistorer på plast. Det är den första i sitt slag, och kan utöka användningsområdet av terahertzteknik till tillämpningar som kräver böjbar elektronik, exempelvis trådlösa sensornätverk och kroppsnära teknik. Resultaten är publicerade i den vetenskapliga tidskriften Applied Physics Letters.

Terahertzstrålning har en lång rad användningsområden och kan förekomma i allt från radioastronomi och säkerhet till medicin. Begreppet syftar på de elektromagnetiska vågor vars frekvenser sträcker sig från 100 gigahertz till 10 terahertz. Efterfrågan på högre bandbredd inom trådlös kommunikation och avbildning för säkerhetstillämpningar har lett till intensifierad forskning på system och komponenter avsedda för terahertzfrekvenser.

En utmaning har länge varit att skapa lätta och billiga applikationer. Framstegen inom polymertekniken har dock främjat utvecklingen av flexibel elektronik och möjliggjort tillverkning av högfrekventa enheter på böjbara underlag.

Nu har chalmersforskarna Xinxin Yang, An-

drei Vorobiev, Andrey Generalov, Michael A. Andersson och Jan Stake tagit fram den första mekaniskt flexibla och grafenbaserade terahertzdetektorn i sitt slag. De öppnar därmed för flexibel terahertzelektronik.

Detektorn har unika egenskaper. I rumstemperatur upptäcker den signaler i frekvensområdet från 330 till 500 gigahertz. Den är genomskinlig och böjbar, och öppnar för en rad tillämpningsområden. Tekniken kan bland annat användas för avbildning i terahertzområdet (THz-kamera), men även för att identifiera olika ämnen (sensor). Den kan också vara till potentiell nytta inom sjukvården, där terahertzvågor kan användas för att upptäcka cancer. Andra områden där detektorn skulle kunna användas är sensorer för fordon och trådlös kommunikation.

De unika elektroniska egenskaperna hos grafen kombinerat med dess flexibla natur gör det till ett lovande material att integrera i plast och tyg, något som kommer att vara viktiga byggstenar i en framtida sammankopplad värld.

Grafenelektronik möjliggör nya applikationer för bland annat vardagsföremål, det som brukar kallas sakernas internet (Internet of Things).

Chalmersforskarnas arbete är därför ett viktigt framsteg när det gäller grafen inom terahertz-området, och ett genombrott mot högpresterande och billig flexibel terahertzteknik.

Detektorn väckte uppmärksamhet på EU-toppmötet Tallinn Digital Summit nyligen, där flera viktiga tekniska innovationer som möjliggjorts av grafen och besläktade material visades upp.

På toppmötet samlades EU:s stats- och regeringschefer för att diskutera digital innovation och Europas digitala framtid. Flaggskeppets fokus var att visa vilken roll grafen kan spela.

Forskningen utgör även en del av Xinxin Yangs licentiatavhandling, som presenteras på Chalmers den 22 november 2017. Forskningen om terahertzdetektorn har finansierats av EU:s forskningsflaggskepp om grafen, Graphene Flagship, Stiftelsen för strategisk forskning (SSF), och Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse (KAW).

Med hjälp av det tvüdimensionella materialet grafen har den fÜrsta flexibla terahertzdetektorn utvecklats av forskare pü Chalmers.

FORSKARE VID UMEĂ&#x2026; och LinkĂśpings universitet har tagit fram starkt lysande elektrokemiska celler (LECs) som är betydligt effektivare än tidigare. Som sĂĽdan är den tunna, flexibla och lätta ljuskällan lovande fĂśr kommande och fĂśrbättrade tillämpningar inom hemdiagnostik, belysning, enkla displayer och hälsovĂĽrd.

En ljusemitterande elektrokemisk cell (LEC) är en tunn, flexibel och lätt plastliknande ljuskälla. Den kan drivas av ett batteri, avger ljus med väsentligen vilken färg som helst, och tillverkas till en lüg kostnad med en metod som liknar hur tidningar tillverkas i en tryckpress. Hittills har en bestüende och problematisk nackdel varit att forskarna inte kunnat frambringa LEC-enheter med büde starkt ljus och hÜg effektivitet.

I tidskriften Nature Communications visar ett forskarteam frĂĽn UmeĂĽ universitet, LinkĂśpings universitet och fĂśretaget LunaLEC AB i Sverige en väg mot att lĂśsa detta problem. Med hjälp av en systematisk kombination av experiment och simuleringar har de etablerat en allmän uppsättning designprinciper, som inkluderar balanserade elektronfällor, optimerad dopning och elektrokemiskt stabila material. Forskarnas ansats har banat vägen fĂśr LEC-komponenter som lyser med en hĂśg ljusstyrka av 2 000 cd/m2 vid en elektron-till-foton effektivitet av 27,5 procent. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Siffran kan jämfĂśras med en standard TV med en maximal ljusstyrka mellan 300 och 500 cd/m2, medan 2000 cd/ m2 är en typisk ljusstyrka pĂĽ en OLED-belysningspanel.

Kvällseventet började med fyra inbjudna presentationer med föredragshållare från Qamcom, AB Volvo, Volvo Cars och Zenuity och avslutades med ett samkväm med mat och dryck, ett uppskattat inslag i höstmörkret.

Föredragen behandlade allt från tekniska aspekter av radarövervakning av järnvägsövergångar, via fordonskommunikation för trafiksäkerhet till hur tekniken skall implementeras vad gäller både hårdvara och hur infrastrukturen skall se ut i det framtida samhället.

Facts about Microwave Road Microwave Road is an organization of about 30 Microwave and Antenna companies with activities in western Sweden, established in 2003. In the beginning Microwave Road was more of a regional idea where highway 40 (Riksväg 40) played an important symbolic value as it connects some of the biggest microwave players in the region. This is also the background for the name. Microwave Road is a non-profitable organization which is financed by membership fees and run by an elected board, and includes giants as Huawei and Ericsson down to several SMEs. Ny bok om EMC VARFÖR ÄR DET så svårt att få ut en förståelse för EMC? Den frågan ställde sig Mikael Klasson, Jan-Olof Brink och Urban Lundgren för fem år sedan. Nyligen släpptes deras bok Introduktion till EMC på Studentlitteratur och Adlibris.

– Vi som håller på med EMC har svårt att få förståelse för att man måste konstruera för EMC redan från början. Företag kommer på att man måste uppnå EMC alldeles för sent i konstruktions- och utvecklingsfasen, det är oftast när man ska få produkten, systemet CE-godkänt man upptäcker att man inte klarar EMC-kraven. Det säger Mikael Klasson som är en av författarna till boken och som för flera år sedan såg ett behov av en introduktion i ämnet.

– För att uppnå EMC är det inte bara att man ska ha rätt kretskortskonstruktion med kretsval, kretsplacering och ledningar rätt dragna, utan också att alla interface måste vara rätt. Alltså alla don och kablar är rätt och att luckor har plats för eventuell skärmning. Vilket innebär att även mekanister måste förstå EMC. Vidare att kombinera miljö- och EMC-krav kan vara ett gissel, säger Mikael.

I boken Introduktion till EMC beskriver författarna ämnet på ett enkelt, övergripande och lättfattligt sätt. Innehållet är upplagt så att boken både kan användas som ett uppslagsverk och läsas i utbildningssyfte. Introduktion till EMC är tänkt som en första introduktion till EMC-området och som läsare behöver du inte ha några speciella förkunskaper, endast en grundläggande förståelse för ellära.

Elektronikkonsult startar ny EMC-tjänst

Elsäkerhetsverket fick pris

EN STOR DEL av alla produkter klarar inte EMC kraven när provningen görs första gången på ett oberoende testlabb. Resultatet blir att man får göra om provningen med ökade kostnader och förseningar i produktlanseringen som följd.

– För många konstruktörer har vi märkt att de inte vet hur de ska tackla EMC-problemen som uppstår i samband med provningen. Testhusen ska ju vara oberoende och då blir det svårt att ge för mycket rådgivning. Där kan vi bistå med vår expertkompetens inom EMC, säger Vidar Wernöe, VD på Elektronikkonsult.

Elektronikkonsult har sedan 1978 hjälpt företag med elektronikkonstruktion och EMC-problem. Den nya tjänsten, EMC-problem.nu (www. emc-problem.nu), fokuserar på att ge akut hjälp för att produkten ska klara EMC- och elsäkerhetskraven, men också rådgivning för att göra rätt från början. I verksamheten finns ett stort elektroniklabb med bra mätplats för EMC, och för många kan det vara väl investerad tid att i ett tidigt skede ta hjälp av en EMC-expert. Genom att ta hänsyn till konstruktionens EMC-egenskaper från start får man en bättre produkt som kan lanseras i rätt tid.

– I många uppdrag ser vi att man inte har gjort en ordentlig kravspecifikation och därmed missat krav som behövs för CE-märkningen. Ett vanligt problem är också brister i mönsterkortslayouten och filtrering. En enkel konstruktionsgranskning och verifiering av EMC-prestanda skulle i många fall öka chanserna avsevärt för att klara certifieringen, avslutar Vidar Wernöe.

SVERIGES MODERNASTE MYNDIGHET ligger i Kristinehamn och heter Elsäkerhetsverket. Under Kvalitetsmässan i Göteborg fick myndigheten ta emot priset som Sveriges modernaste myndighet 2017.

– Jag är väldigt glad och stolt över utmärkelsen, säger Elsäkerhetsverkets generaldirektör, Elisabet Falemo. Det är ett fantastiskt fint kvitto till alla medarbetare som varit med och utvecklat verksamheten, samtidigt som vi sjösatt en modernare elsäkerhetslagstiftning. Ett förtroendefullt samarbete med andra myndigheter, branschorganisationer och fackliga organisationer har betytt mycket.

Juryns säger i sin motivering att: ”På den här myndigheten har man vågat ompröva gamla arbetssätt och idag utförs uppdraget på ett nytt sätt och med ett tydligt fokus på att uppnå största möjliga samhällsnytta. Under omställningsarbetet har myndigheten visat på sin förmåga att agera snabbfotat, och på värdet av öppenhet mot och involvering av sina intressenter. På myndigheten ser man hellre möjligheter än hinder och gör inte saker svårare än de behöver vara. Här står också utvecklingen av statstjänstemannarollen högt på agendan och medarbetarna ser sig som ambassadörer för myndigheten och dess uppdrag.”

– Det är jättekul att vi som en ganska liten myndighet kan vinna priset, säger Elisabet Falemo. Vi har byggt vidare på kompetensen som finns bland personalen, släppt in externa referensgrupper tidigt i förändringsprojekt och även riktat våra insatser mot nya målgrupper för att bli ännu mer effektiva. Våra medarbetare har medvetet klivit ur sin bekvämlighetszon, allt för att möta de förväntningar och behov som finns, säger Elisabet Falemo.

Branschnytt Yokogawa adds CXPI automotive serial bus analysis option to DLM oscilloscope series CXPI – CLOCK EXTENSION Peripheral Interface – is a new automotive serial bus interface that is designed to provide an optimised solution in applications previously served by the established CAN and LIN bus systems, which until now have been the main interfaces used for in-vehicle communications. In particular, as more sensors and human-machine interfaces are used in vehicles and controls become ever more sophisticated, the new bus helps to minimise system power consumption through electronic control as well as reducing vehicle weight by using lighter components, especially in wiring harnesses.

With LIN, it is difficult to achieve sufficient reliability and communication response when multiplexing in HMI applications. CAN is better for reliability and communication response, but the cost is higher than LIN. The CXPI protocol, on the other hand, is a lowspeed low-cost communication protocol that is capable of reducing wire counts to simple devices like switches and sensors.

CXPI was standardised in 2015 under SAE J3076 as a communications bus for diverse automotive applications. The bus uses pulse-width modulation to transmit data over a single wire at 20 kbit/s. The characters used are based on UART. CXPI has the CSMA/CR system (event initiate system) built into the polling system of LIN, which

provides higher response time and scalability, and significantly reduces HMI and development costs. It has reduced the number of the parts needed for the clock side of the design because a data and a clock signal can transmit at the same time via PWM. When equipped with the CXPI option, the DLM Series oscilloscopes will decode and display CXPI frames in real time, produce a list display of the decode results, and allow highlighting of points on the list for display in a zoom window. After the acquisition, dedicated parts of the display can be searched for a number of specified conditions.

An auto setup feature can be used to analyse the

input signals, set the time and voltage axes automatically along with various trigger settings such as threshold levels, bit rates and trigger type, and then display the decoded result.

Yokogawa’s DLM2000 and DLM4000 mixed-signal oscilloscopes combine a fast update rate with exceptionally long memory plus a combination of flexible analogue and digital outputs that make them ideally suited to a range of measurement and analysis tasks in the electronics, automotive and mechatronics sectors.
