Moran has a New Film at Golden Door Int’l Film Festival Moran’s LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL inspired by Sci-Fi and Reality LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL will be screened on Sun, Sept. 25 at 2 pm at Panepinto Galleries in Jersey City. “It does have really good acting and good production values,” Morán says, taking a break at a Jersey City bagel shop. I shot it more like an editor. I really knew what I wanted.” Morán’s film will be screened at three more festivals this fall including the Official Latino Short Film Festival in New York on Fri, Sept. 16, and on Fri, Sept. 23, LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL will be screened at the Patio Theater in Chicago, a

ilmmaker Christian Alexander Morán seems to light up when everything gets dark. He smiles when discussing his new film LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL, a 20-minute short film based on the true story of two girls who commit murder. Moran’s film melds and directed will be his experience directing screened during the Golden documentaries and his pasDoor Int’l Film Festival sion for sci-fi and horror. Just mention Rod Serling (of Twilight Zone fame), and Morán recalls fond memories sitting in front of his family’s TV in Queens “glued” to the TV. chosen selection of the Chicago Horror Film Festival. Morán’s film has also been named an official selection in the upcoming Newark International Film Festival (dates TBA).

The story of LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL is pretty gruesome. Two teenage girls get it in their heads that they must kill someone to gain acceptance by a fictional character known as Slender Man, which they find on the Internet. The girls then convince themselves that Slender Man wants them to stab their

teenage friend to death. Grisly, yes, and a true story. (The girls are awaiting trial.) “I was helping my friend Natalie Chau produce her movie, GRACE, a zombie film, and during break the story broke on TV – two 12 year-old girls kill a friend to become proxies of Slender Man,” Morán says . “It intrigued me. I always wanted to tell a monster story.” In his filmmaking career, Morán has edited 50 films and written and directed three: – Silentious, Flawed God and Let’s Play Dead Girl. Morán won an award in 2002 at the Aurora Film Festival for his documentary OUT OF THE DARKNESS, which he made while earning an Associate’s Degree at Borough

of Manhattan Community College. It was right after 9/11 that the college deans contacted Morán to do a documentary on 9/11, which he did, calling it “Out of the Darkness.”

“The school wanted it to propel the school back to opening and used it as a fundraiser,” says. Morán also holds a B.A. in Film Production from Brooklyn College. As production manager and senior editor at Media

Blasters Inc, Morán has worked on and revived several cult and horror titles like Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE 2, Takashi Mike’s ICHI THE KILLER and ONE MISSED CALL. He worked on the animated titles INVADER ZIM, BERSERK, GIANT ROBO, SAMURAI DEEPER KYO, 12 KINGDOMS and VOLTRON: DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE. He also produced and edited ALLIANCE OF CIVILIZATIONS, a promotional video for the U.N. which featured President Barack Obama. A Jersey City resident, Morán has transferred his editing skills over to his role as director. “As an editor, they say you should cut it faster,” Morán says, “capture their attention span.” Morán is talking about the attention span of

Millennials, those born around the turn of 2000. “It’s not so much attracting their attention span, “Morán says, “It’s keeping it there. LET’S PLAY DEAD GIRL is edited like an action movie. It’s got constant cuts. A firm believer in film festivals, Morán says there’s a lot you can get out of a film festival like Golden Door and the Official Latino Film Festival in New York. Morán has participated in 40 festivals in over 13 years. “My reason for submitting my films to film festivals is to strike a distribution deal and get the word out to fans,” Morán says. He uses social media to publicize his films, too. “I also like film festivals to network, scout for new talent.”

Born in Ecuador, his family moved to Queens when he was a baby. Growing up in the Manhattan borough, Morán says he had his first glimpse of his chosen profession watching TV. “I watched The Honeymooners, Star Trek and Twilight Zone,” Morán says. “The one episode of Twilight Zone I love to talk about is ‘To Serve Man’ about the (space) aliens taking away our freedom. Sept 22-25: Golden Door Int’l Film Festival Back for 6th Year More Films, More Venues, All in JC

By Sally Deering

I

n just a couple weeks, the landmark Loew’s Movie Palace in Journal Square will be lit up like a Hollywood soundstage for the kick-off of the 6th annual Golden Door International Film Festival (GDIFF). This year, there are lots of exceptional films and filmmakers showing their work – 179 films, in fact, will be screened in four days, and that includes features, documentaries and short films by many local filmmakers. The festival runs Thurs, Sept.22 through Sun, Sept. 25 and its opening night Gala happens at the landmark Loew’s where movie-goers, filmmakers and actors will gather and schmooze. Executive director Bill Sorvino, an actor and producer in his own right, and the nephew of legendary actor Paul Sorvino, will be on hand for the kick-off joined by his wife Michele Sorvino who co-produces the event. Michele says this year’s Golden Door Film Festival has expanded its venues and number of film screenings and promises to bring new ideas and opportunities to the filmmakers. “Billy and his family speak and understand the language of filmmaking,” Michele Sorvino says. “That’s why we have the success we do.” The GDIFF festival

Paul, Bill & Michele Sorvino at the GDIFF. (Photo Huffington Post.com) was founded and is run by the Sorvino family with both Mira Sorvino and Paul Sorvino on the festival’s board of directors. A juried festival, filmmakers are eligible to win honors in categories like the James Gandolfini Award, Best Narrative Feature, Best Music Video and Best Local Films, as well as Best Actor and Actress. “I’m a member of the film industry,” Bill Sorvino adds. “I started this film festival from the point of view that this is what I do and my city needs it. I’m not a major star, but I come from a filmmaking family. A lot of film festivals are started by people who don’t have an idea of the film business. They create a film festival to get politically connected or for the glitz, glamor, and glory.” This year’s venues will include the Loew’s Movie Palace, in Journal Square, Merseles Studios (part of the JC Theater Center) on

Newark Ave, the Beacon’s Paramount Theater and Rialto-Capital Theater on Montgomery St, the Regency at The Sutton (condominiums) and PanepintoGalleries, downtown. There are two screening venues at St. Peter’s University, too. “We’ve partnered with St. Peter’s in two ways, with internships and space,” Bill Sorvino says. “And one of our favorite new spaces is the Regency at the Sutton building, it’s a beautiful little movie palace.”

On Thurs, Sept. 22, at the Opening Night Gala, GDIFF will screen the world premiere of Chris Robert’s ANOTHER YOU,

starring Ksenia Solo, Kris Holden-Ried, and Diego Boneta. The film tells the story of science major Sydney Jameson, an ambitious student who becomes obsessed with her boyfriend Marcus. Things change when she “loses herself in a scientific breakthrough, finding a way to use the theory of De Ja Vu to explore her past mistakes.” Also showing that night, IN SEARCH OF RUNNING MAN, by Stephanie Daniels of Jersey City – a humorous piece on the Jersey City Police Department and the Running Man Challenge. It was produced by Jennifer Morrill, also of Jersey City.

On Friday night at the Loew’s it’s the Red Carpet screening of Miles Doleac’s THE HOLLOW starring James Callis (Bridget Jones’s Baby), Christiane Seidel (Boardwalk Empire), William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption), William Forsythe (Daredevil), Jeff Fahey (Lost) and Doleac (Containment). That night, the LEGENDS OF FREESTYLE documentary will take place at Transmission near the Jersey City waterfront with a live concert by artist/ singer Cynthia. Saturday night’s Red Carpet events include

Mara Lesemann’s DETOURS, starring Carlo Fiorletta and Paul Sorvino. Also showing that night at the Loew’s, John Asher’s PO, starring Christopher Gorham, about a single dad raising a young son with autism. Special that night, Thomas Baldinger’s romanticcomedy WHO’S JENNA..? starring Tracey Birdsall and Bill Sorvino, will also be screened. “To make this happen every year, it takes a team of people who are dedicated to the Golden Door Film Festival,” Michele Sorvino says. “The amount of effort and time that these people put in is amazing, and they’re the most creative people. We have 12 people who run this entire event and work amazingly together.” Founded in 2010, the Golden Door International Film Festival’s mission is “to shine a light on Jersey City, and provide an equal platform to all filmmakers well known and otherwise. Since that time, Golden Door International Film Festival has anchored itself as a cultural focal point of Jersey City.” Cont’d on page 9

Cont’d from page 7 A major highlight at this year’s GDIFF will be the number of distribution companies attending, Bill Sorvino says. “We’ve really made the effort to have distribution companies this year,” Sorvino says. “That’s key to the film festival. This year a lot of distributors will be coming and checking out the films. This is a big attraction to filmmakers. To get their films distributed and have the world see their films is the ultimate goal.”

BOOZE, TUNES & (Vegetarian) FOOD The Pet Shop Bar/Restaurant Livens Up Newark Ave Pedestrian Mall now Hipper & Happier

By Sally Deering

T

he only pets at The Pet Shop, Newark Ave’s newest bar/restaurant are the images of dogs, deer and other four-legged creatures displayed behind glass and mounted on the walls. The menu at The Pet Shop is strictly vegetarian – a new and welcome addition to downtown Jersey City’s Pedestrian Mall.

Described as a “neighborhood bar serving booze, tunes and food”, the Pet Shop has a storefront entrance that leads guests up a few steps and into an atmosphere that’s like an old Jersey City watering hole reconstructed. Stools line the bar on the left which faces tables-fortwo that line a brick wall adorned with pictures of a German Shephard, Corgi and some deer with huge antlers. Walk to the back and the room is lined with big comfy booths, and in

the middle of the room, long tables and chairs are set up where folks can wine, dine and socialize against the backdrop of a neon birdcage. The décor was designed by Amanda Danesi. “It was carefully crafted,” David Rappaport, one of The Pet Shop’s three partners, says. The Pet Shop just opened August 4th with Rappaport, Shen Pan, and Eric Speck at the helm, and 11

investors behind the scenes. The vegetarian menu is the brainchild of Chef Eric McGuire. Recently, Rappaport and bar manager Lindsay Gomeringer were getting The Pet Shop ready for business which begins at 4 pm during the week. As soon as the doors opened, people were strolling in, taking seats at the bar and grabbing tables for dinner. This week’s menu offers a handful of choices, all

vegetarian. The Tomato Medley features Cherry tomatoes halved and tossed in pure California extra virgin olive oil, and basil encircled by sliced black velvet tomatoes drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and Rosemary. Served with French bread ($6). Noodle lovers might like the Pet Shop Raw Chow Fun: Thin green and golden zucchini “noodles” topped with julienned red pepper, bean sprouts, scallions, raw

cashews, crumbled tofu, cilantro and a sesame/soy/ lime/rice vinegar dressing ($8). Buffalo Wing-lovers might try the Buffalo Cauliflower, instead, crispy-coated cauliflower florets tossed in traditional buffalo sauce. Served with vegan ranch, carrots, and celery ($8). Steak made from cauliflower? You bet! It’s the Cauliflower Steak Sandwich: Caramelized Cont’d on page 17

BOOZE, TUNES & (Vegetarian) FOOD Cont’d from page 17 cauliflower steak lightly dusted with fennel seed powder topped with garlicsautéed kale, fried long hot peppers, and Provolone. Served on a ciabatta roll ($12). There’s the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich, fried green tomatoes with French onion jam, Swiss cheese and herbed garlic aioli. Served on olive toasted sourdough bread ($12). And for snacking, the Crunch Chickpeas fried to crunch with smoked paprika and lemon zest ($3), sound tasty. Plans are already in motion to offer Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. “We’re also building a wine bar downstairs, which will be open soon,” Rappaport says. “We’ll be serving wines from small vineyards in Italy.”

Although it’s only been open less than a month, The Pet Shop seems to be grabbing the attention of neighborhood locals – and other businesses. When a nitrogen tank wasn’t working at the bar, the owners of South House loaned Pet Shop a tank on the spot. “Opening a business on Newark Ave. can be good for everybody,” Rappaport says. “Everyone here looks out for each other. It’s a community of business owners. I hope it stays, this This inventive reimagining of the classic science fiction novel follows Jules, a modern-day raconteur, as he finds himself transported into his favorite story. When he climbs aboard the Nautilus, helmed by the infamous Captain Nemo, he sets off on a fantastical aquatic action adventure. Brought to stunning life through a mix of multimedia magic, eye-popping projections and interactive technology, this time-honored tale considers humankind’s place in the world and illuminates the mysteries that lie in the vast expanse of the ocean deep.”

community feel.” And will the dishes continue to be vegetarian or will they soon be adding burgers to the menu? “Now I’m flexitarian,” Rappaport says. “We toyed with other ideas for the menu, but this used to be an old pet shop. There were pets and animals here. We thought it would be weird.” If you go The Pet Shop 193 Newark Ave, JC (201) 984-2170 Hours: 4PM–3AM www.petshopjc.com NEWARK MUSEUM, 49 Washington St, Newark, NJ.
